14 Anguilla trumps 3-0 to leave St Martin winless GROS ISLET, St Lucia, August 3, 207: Anguilla put together a controlled effort in all areas to win 3-0 () to leave St Martin still without a win in the men s Group D of the NORCECA Zone of the FIVB World Championships Qualifiers round for teams in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA), at the Beausejour Indoor Facility. Anguilla, in a show of improvement, which was evident from their last match against St Lucia. Topping the scoring for Anguilla was Outside Hitter- Sherwin Richardson with 3 points, and for St Martin, both Jeff Pierre (Opposite Hitter) and Julius Henry (Outside Hitter) could only muster 7 points each. The triumph by Anguilla, was a realisation of an expectation of its Head Coach- Justus Connor, as he had previously projected that his team would show improvement. Relating his team s win, Connor expressed, There is always a good feeling when you win, especially knowing where we came from Today, we were more focussed as the game went on. We always match up well against them We know what they are capable of and they know what we are capable of, Connor added. Making reference to their movement upwards in their play, Connor informed, I am really proud of the way we are playing right now It is unfortunate there are not more games for us as there is a lot left in us that we can do better. Destined finalists St Lucia and St Maarten meet in the final preliminary match.

15 St Lucia pressure St Maarten in rehearsal for the gold medal GROS ISLER, St Lucia, August 3, 207: St Lucia extended their record to 3-0 win/loss, with a polished 3-0 ( 25-9, 26-24, 25-9 ) trumping at the expense of St Maarten in the men s Group D of the NORCECA Zone of the FIVB World Championships Qualifiers round for teams in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA), at the Beausejour Indoor Facility. In the last match of the preliminary phase, the two previewed each other as they are set to meet again in the final. For a change, St Lucia s top scorer was not Joseph Clercent, but Middle Blocker - Tevin St Jean, who tallied 2. For St Maarten, Shaquille Rombley, a Middle Blocker, had 0 points. St Lucia s dominance was exemplified in Attacks, which they won 29 to 6, and bossed the Blocks 2-5. But St Maarten accrued fewer errors than St Lucia. Errors incurred by St Maarten were 32, while St Lucia had 38. A highly optimistic Head Coach of St Lucia- Terry Verdant, expects his team to be again dismissing St Maarten by the same 3-0 margin. We will be playing with the same high intensity in final and I anticipate another 3-0 win, Verdant boasted. Unfazed by the defeat, Head Coach of the St Maarten outfit, Dimitri Beauperthy, conveyed that it was a tactical move in preparation for the grand finale. This game did not matter, as we were already in the final The final is what matters, Beauperthy quipped. We used some of the fellas who don t start and it showed that they are as good as those who normally start We were preserving the energy with some of our players and we also got a feel of the play of the St Lucians and the speed at which they play and we got to see them, the St Maarten Head Coach reasoned. Preceding the final, is the third place play off. Contesting the bronze medal, are St Martin and Anguilla.

16 St Martin revenge on Anguilla to take bronze GROS ISLET, St Lucia, August 3, 207: St Martin had the last say in the consolation match versus Anguilla, winning the bronze medal match 3-2 (25-8, 2-25, 22-25, 25-4, 5-2) in the men s Group D of the NORCECA Zone of the FIVB World Championships Qualifiers second round, for teams in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA), at the Beausejour Indoor Facility. It was an about turn in the fortunes for St Martin, who had previously lost all three previous matches, inclusive of a defeat at the hands of Anguilla. The combined scoring efforts of Cedric Billionniere, an Outside Hitter and Rotilio Richardson, an Opposite Hitter, both contributed 2 points each, for St Martin. Sherwin Richardson, an Outside Hitter, garnered 8 points for Anguilla. Winning the bronze was in some way, a consolation for Head Coach of St Martin Thierry Stephen. I am pleased with the third place but I think we could have done better, Stephen related. 17 St Lucia replay against St Maarten to take Group D Gold GROS ISLET, St Lucia, August 3, 207: St Lucia finished off business against St Maarten 3-0 ( 25-8, 25-9, 25-6) to win gold in the men s Group D of the NORCECA Zone of the FIVB World Championships Qualifiers second round for teams in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA), at the Beausejour Indoor Facility. It was a workmanlike display of all round Volleyball skills, St Lucia made it a perfect, winning all four matches. St Lucia had earlier handed St Martin and St Maarten, 3-0 defeats and beat Anguilla, 3-, in the preliminary phase of the tournament. Led by their one man scoring army, Outside Hitter- Joseph Clercent, who recorded 3 points, St Lucia took little time in securing the first place, which turned out to be more than easy. On the opposite end of the court, the best scorer for St Maarten was Opposite Hitter- Riegmar Valies, who only claimed 6 points. St Lucia outdid St Maarten in Attacks, 30-5, Blocks 0-6 and Aces 2-. Both teams though, committed the same number of errors, 33. Head Coach of St Lucia- Terry Verdant, who had predicted a three- nil defeat on St Maarten, revealed that they came out very aggressive against their opponents, which rattled them in the opening set. What we also did was to play without a Libero, so that we could have had five hitters and that was a big change for us, Verdant confirmed. Looking ahead to the more demanding Continental Championships, Verdant projected an intensification in the team s preparations for the outing in the USA, next month. We plan to work on our rhythm, our tempo, our elevation as we are going to be coming up against those big teams who have some very tall players over six feet We also have to work on our defence as we were not as we should in this tournament, Verdant related. Conceding that his team was beaten by a superior St Lucia team, Head Coach of St Martin, Dimitri Beauperthuy, acknowledged, St Lucia showed their experience in playing in these types of games. 18 Joseph Clercent takes Group D MVP Award GROS ISLET, St Lucia, and August 3, 207: St Lucia s Joseph Clercent was the obvious choice as Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the men s Group D of the NORCECA Zone of the FIVB World Championships Qualifiers second round, for teams in the Eastern Caribbean Volleyball Association (ECVA), at the Beausejour Indoor Facility. Sporting # on his jersey, Clercent was the Best Scorer with a success rate of 56.07% and was named one of two Best Outside Hitters. St Lucia pouched two other individual awards. Sheldon Descartes walked away with the Best Server accolade and Tevin St Jean, was one of two Best Middle Blockers. But it was Anguilla that collected the most awards five. Topping the list with three was Kevin Gumbs, as he was named Best Receiver, Best Digger and Best Libero. Meanwhile, Jeloni Lawrence, also of Anguilla was listed as the other Best Middle Blocker. Anguilla s other award was snapped up by Ian Connor, who collected the Best Setter trophy. And, completing the list of awardees, was Riegmar Valies of St Maarten, the Best Opposite Hitter.
