7 COACHING STAFF Jolene Nagel Head Coach 13th Season B.S. - Edinboro, 83 M.A. - Kent State Now entering her 13th season at the helm of the Duke volleyball program, head coach Jolene Nagel has put the Blue Devils on the collegiate volleyball map. Under her watch, Duke has made nine NCAA Tournament appearances in the last 10 years including six straight trips to the postseason and has earned the reputation as one of the elite programs on the East Coast. Last season, Nagel collected her third ACC Coach of the Year and East Region Coach of the Year awards as Duke won its third ACC Championship of the past five seasons and advanced all the way to the NCAA Regional Final. That postseason performance was the best in school history and the culmination of Duke s steady climb to the elite ranks of college volleyball during Nagel s tenure. The Blue Devils were awarded the No. 12 national seed in last season s NCAA Tournament after a regular season in which they went 24-6 overall and owned the No. 13 spot in the NCAA RPI. Duke won its first three matches in the tournament, including a 3-1 Regional Semifinal win over Missouri, to advance to the Regional Final for the first time in school history. The Blue Devils fell 3-1 to eventual NCAA Champion Penn State, but earned recognition as the only team in the entire 2011 NCAA Tournament to win a set from the four-time defending champion Nittany Lions. Duke has recorded fi ve straight 25-win seasons under Nagel and consistently finished among the top three in the ACC for seven seasons. Nagel has led Duke to three ACC regular season championships, an overall record of and an ACC record of She ranks fourth all-time in ACC history in overall winning percentage (.705), third in ACC winning percentage (.721), third in ACC wins (160) and second in NCAA Tournament appearances (9). Since taking hold of the Duke program in 1999, Nagel has coached 16 All-ACC award winners, three ACC Players of the Year, 16 All- East Region selections and 13 of Duke s 14 All-America honorees. In all, the Blue Devils have received 33 All-ACC citations, 31 All-East Region awards and 20 All-America honors under Nagel. Included in that group are ACC Players of the Year Kellie Catanach (2010), Carrie DeMange (2007) and Ali Hausfeld (2006). Duke has also excelled academically and has been honored with the AVCA Team Academic Award in seven of the past eight seasons. Additionally, for two consecutive seasons every member of the Duke volleyball team has earned a spot on the ACC Academic Honor Roll for holding a GPA of at least 3.00 for the entire academic year. Nagel collected her 400th career victory in 2009 and her 200th win at Duke the same year, both marks that only one other coach in Duke history Jon Wilson has reached. Nagel s record in her 12 seasons as a Blue Devil has made Duke the winningest program in the ACC over that span. Duke s 2009 campaign under Nagel yielded a second-place ACC fi nish and the program s fifth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Devils finished 27-6 overall in 2009 to mark the fourth straight 25-win season for the team. Additionally, the Blue Devils went 17-3 in the ACC, placed three on the All-ACC team and saw senior Rachael Moss pull in the program s first Academic All-America fi rst team citation. In 2008, Nagel led the Blue Devils to an ACC Co-Championship, a 25-9 overall record and their fourth consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament. For the second straight season, a Blue Devil took home ACC Player Of The Year Honors in 2007 as DeMange collected the award after becoming Duke and the ACC s all-time kills leader. Duke s success in 2007 followed an impressive 2006 campaign in which the Blue Devils, led by ACC Player of the Year Hausfeld, captured their first ACC Championship since 1994 after finishing with a 29-4 overall record and a 21-1 mark in the ACC. Wasielewski has made a tremendous impact on the program s recruiting, training and scouting, helping the Blue Devils advance to the NCAA Tournament nine times while capturing four ACC Championships. Since joining the program 12 years ago, Wasielewski has helped the Blue Devils compile a (.705) overall record and a (.721) mark in ACC play. Both of those winning percentages are the highest of any ACC team in the last 10 years. With Wasielewski s help, the Blue Devils have claimed four ACC Championships since 2000 while finishing among the top three in the conference standings in nine of the past 10 seasons. In just his third year at the helm alongside Nagel, Wasielewski coached the Blue Devils to the 2001 ACC Regular Season Championship. Wasielewski s impact is also noticeable on the recruiting trail where he as helped bring in 13 All-Americas and 16 players who went on to collect All-ACC honors. Additionally, coach Wasielewski recruited the 2006 ACC and East Region Freshman of the Year in 2009 graduate Rachael Moss and 12 ACC All-Freshman Team members. With his guidance last year, the Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth consecutive season and ventured further into the tournament than any Duke team in program history. After winning the 2010 ACC Championship, the Blue Devils won three NCAA Tournament matches to advance to the NCAA Regional Final, becoming only the third ACC team to reach that round. Five Blue Devils including ACC Player of the Year and AVCA All-America Kellie Catanach were named All-ACC and All-East Region. In 2009, Duke finished 27-6 overall for the program s fourth straight 25-win season. 10 COACHES & STAFF COACHING STAFF Cristina Pintilie Assistant Coach 3rd Season B.S. - Long Island, 05 M.S. - Troy, 07 Cristina Pintilie returns for her third year on the Duke volleyball staff after helping the Blue Devils advance to the NCAA Tournament in each of her first two seasons. Among other duties, Pintilie assists with team training, recruiting and scouting for the Blue Devil volleyball program. Pintilie made an immediate impact in her first two seasons as the Blue Devils compiled a (.806) overall record and a 33-7 (.825) mark in ACC play. Pintilie has helepd Duke advance to the NCAA Tournament in both of her seasons, including 2010 when the Blue Devils enjoyed a run to the NCAA Regional Final against eventual national champion Penn State. Last season, Duke s defense was among the best in the country, and that was due in part to the development of middle blockers Becci Burling, Christiana Gray and Amanda Robertson. Each of those three were named All-ACC and All-East Region while helping Duke hold opponents to a.173 hitting percentage, which was the second lowest in the ACC. In her first season, Pintilie coached a Blue Devil squad that held opponents to an ACC-low.160 hitting percentage and went 27-6 overall and 17-3 in the ACC. A former middle blocker at Long Island, Pintilie mentored Duke s middle blocking trio of Becci Burling, Christiana Gray and Amanda Robertson, which emerged as one of the top middle units in the conference. Both Burling, a junior, and Gray, a freshman, topped 100 blocks in 2009 while Robertson nearly tripled the number of blocks she posted as a freshman.
