Cresskill Cougar Volleyball 2009 I know most of you are beginning to recover from another grueling but productive school year. Although all of us wish this upcoming summer vacation will never end, it will eventually. There is one thing to look forward to - and that's volleyball! The first day of volleyball is just around the bend, and there are some things that you should know: PHYSICALS/PERMISSION SLIPS Players MUST make sure that they have turned in the following: 1.) A completed Annual Athletic Pre-Participation Physical Examination Form, 2.) A completed Athletic Permission Form, 3.) A completed Steroid Consent Form, 4.) If needed, a completed Permission for Physical by School Physician Form, and 4.) A completed Sports Participation Index Card (see your coach or the school nurse for this) If you are missing any of those forms, you can download all of the forms, except the Sports Participation Index Card, from the school website at: 0Athletics/Sports%20Forms/ If you need a Sports Participation Index Card, call Coach Von Glahn at x 1071 as soon as possible and set up an appointment to pick up prior to your attendance to the first of ANY volleyball activity. Free school physicals are available on Thursday, August 20, 2008 at 1:00pm. Please contact Mrs Dewar PRIOR to the date of the school physical, and leave a voic asking for the details involved so that you can be seen by the school physician for a physical. If you missed this, it is your responsibility to set up an appointment with a doctor and get a physical. Physicals are good for a 12 month period. If you think that you have gotten a physical after November 30, 2008, check with the school nurse or your physician to verify this because you may not need to get a physical at this moment but you still need to fill out a follow-up report. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IN ANY ACTIVITY WITH ANY OF THE TEAMS WITHOUT ALL FORMS BEING COMPLETED. Coaches will be instructed to ask you to leave the event should you not be cleared. PLEASE COPY ALL FORMS BEFORE HANDING THEM IN FOR YOUR OWN RECORDS. BRACES/INHALERS If you have some type of physical condition requiring you to wear any type of support brace or requires the availability of an inhaler, you MUST have them with you at all times. YOU WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO PARTICIPATE IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THEM WITH YOU. This is for your own safety. GLASSES/CONTACTS Players will not be able to wear glasses alone at any point in time during a volleyball game or practice. Contacts, sport goggles, or protective goggles over glasses are to be worn. Being able to properly see is VERY important in what you are doing. If you normally wear glasses, now would be the time to make the effort to get contacts or protective goggles.

UNIFORMS/ATTIRE Please make sure that you wear proper practice attire for each practice. Proper clothing and volleyball kneepads are mandatory in order to step onto the volleyball court. It is strongly recommended that you wear volleyball shoes, Active Ankle braces, and have a pair of cross-training/running shoes. It is also recommended that you bring a bottle of water to every event. Anyone in need of new kneepads should take care of getting a pair of kneepads prior to the first practice. There are several companies that you specialize in volleyball equipment online. Please call Mr. Von Glahn's office for information. No player will be able to step on the volleyball court without a set of kneepads. GAME SCHEDULE Included in this packet is the most up-to-date schedule of scrimmages and regular season games. Games are printed in bold, practices are in regular type. This schedule, however, is not set in stone, and does not include additional tournaments such as the County and State Tournaments for the Varsity Players. Please remember that changes WILL occur and we all need to be flexible. SEASON LENGTH ALL players should take note that although the regular season concludes for all squads by the end of October, our season does not officially end until late November, at the conclusion of the NJSIAA State Tournament of Champions. ALL players from ALL levels are expected to attend ALL home post-season Varsity matchups. Junior Varsity players are expected to attend ALL Varsity post-season matchups, regardless of location. COLLEGE VISITATIONS/VACATIONS The coaching staff recommends that any players looking to visit colleges should do so before the season begins. In addition, players and their families should not plan any vacations from August 22, 2009 to November 30, The affect to the squad with just one player missing is a tremendously difficult one to overcome. SCHOOL RULES ALL school rules will be in effect during all Cougar Volleyball events. Players should make sure to read over their agendas at the beginning of the school year to get accustomed to those rules. Below the coaching staff has outlined policies which the staff felt should be emphasized. ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY The coaching staff is committed to the philosophy that our players are "students - first; athletes-second." In addition, Cresskill High School has a ratified Academic Eligibility Policy in effect. ANY student who has failed a course at the conclusion of the academic school year should see their guidance counselor about their player eligibility. Summer school may be required in order to regain eligibility. In addition, all players will be monitored throughout the season by their coaches. The staff would appreciate players who are having trouble with his/her classload to come see their respective coach first, to avoid any long-term problems developing. SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY

All students are required to abide by the Cresskill High School Substance Abuse Policy. Coaches will hold a discussion at the beginning of the year with players in regards to this and all other policies as well. HARASSMENT/HAZING/BULLYING POLICY All students are required to abide by the Cresskill High School Substance Abuse Policy. Coaches will hold a discussion at the beginning of the year with players in regards to this and all other policies as well. LATE/ABSENCE POLICY All students must be in school for at least four academic hours to be considered present. Any student admitted after 9:45am are considered absent for the day. Students who are dismissed before 1:05pm are considered absent for the day. Any student who is considered absent for the day is not eligible to participate in after-school activities. OFFICIAL TRYOUTS All players must put in the six days of practice before they are eligible to play in a scrimmage or regular season game. Official and mandatory practices/tryouts will begin Saturday, August 22, 2009 for all players grades 9 through 12. Decisions of JV/Varsity teams will be posted after the practice on Tuesday, August 25, Please check the schedule enclosed for times. All players will be evaluated for placement on teams throughout the practices scheduled from August 22nd to August 25th. For this reason and the team's eligibility for scrimmages, it is imperative that YOU make EVERY practice. A schedule from August through November is included in this letter. Please make note that there are some double sessions and some of you will be required to be at BOTH practices. Please make arrangements to change your personal schedules NOW. TALK TO THE OTHER PLAYERS A letter has to be sent to the players who participated in volleyball last year or those we know who are interested in playing volleyball this year. We are always looking for talented players, so if you know of anyone who has played volleyball before, or wants to learn, any positive recruiting of potential players who did not attend the spring meeting would be greatly appreciated. If you know of anyone who has not received this letter, and is interested in participating in volleyball, please get a copy of this letter to them and have them contact Coach Von Glahn at Cresskill High School.

COACHES/STAFF If you were not sure exactly who would be working with us this year, I'll take the time right now to introduce you to the coaching staff for the 2009 Fall Season. The coaches, and their respective duties, are: John Von Glahn - Catherine Durakis - Charlene Koenig- Cathy Glynn - Allison Lutz - Al Venskus - Co-Head Coach/Co-Head Varsity Volleyball Coach Co-Head Coach/Co-head Varsity Volleyball Coach Asst. Varsity/Head JV Volleyball Coach Asst. Varsity/Head Freshman Volleyball Coach Asst. Varsity/Head Middle School Volleyball Coach Volunteer Asst. Volleyball Coach GET YOURSELF PREPARED MANAGERS In preparation for the upcoming Fall season, I would recommend that you all start getting into shape by doing some basic exercises (weight training, push-ups, sit-ups, 1 mile runs). With the heat of the summer reaching it's highest of the year, please be careful when you train - early morning or evening would probably be the best as far as temperature is concerned. When working out, ALWAYS have some water handy, to keep your body fluids level. I know many of you have been either playing club ball during the year, or reacquiring your skills through open gyms. I hope that all of you will make your best effort to prepare yourself prior to the first day of practice. A few other things you should keep in mind You will be pushed both physically and mentally; never give up and you will never lose. 2. The more you begin to work out now, the easier the practices will be when we begin, and the less pain you will feel. 3. You will learn a great deal about volleyball, yourself, and your teammates. 4. Although you will be working hard, in pain, and sweating profusely, you WILL be having fun. (Can you believe it?) 5. Set your goals high, then reach a little higher. 6. Last, but not least, you will survive it all! There is a need for managers for each JV/Varsity, Freshman, and Junior High team. Managers assist in videotaping, stat taking, and other necessary items. Managers are considered members of the team. GATHERINGS The coaching staff is open to any ideas that parents or players may have to make this coming season not only the best on the court, but off the court as well. FINAL THOUGHTS The coaching staff is hoping that you will understand one of our long-standing mottos - "it's not the hours you put in, it's what you put into those hours" that makes a champion. We hope that you also return ready to hit the courts hard, focused, ready to focus on volleyball and becoming a team - one that works

together, has fun together, and gets along together. Cougar Volleyball has a rich tradition over the many years since its inception in A strong win-loss record with eight BCSL League Championships ('81, '82, '84, '99, '01, '02, '03, '04) and three State Group Championships ('82, '02, '03), Cougar Volleyball has a great winning tradition. Although our past successes are a great measure of the program, that success can be directly attributed to the traditions passed down to the players - hard work, dedication, talent, and determination and the deep appreciation and love for the sport of volleyball. The program has garnered the respect of players, coaches, and programs throughout the area.. Our Varsity teams remain a league contender and statewide power in Group I. Our Junior Varsity, Freshman, and Middle School squads continue to progress and learn all aspects of the sport by leaps and bounds. All the while, we have fun playing the sport we love. Success like this does not come easy. We have some of the most knowledgeable and hardworking volleyball coaches any program could ask for. They work tirelessly to improve their craft and passing that knowledge on to their players. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank our coaching staff. They have been putting in countless hours already in preparing for the upcoming season. As a staff, we are always trying new things to make the Cougar Volleyball experience just that much more memorable. Enjoy your summer and remember to get yourself prepared and pumped for the upcoming volleyball season. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me at the High School. See you soon!
