3 2011 GEORGIA NOTES... First-Year Head Coach Lizzy Stemke: Georgia begins a new era in its volleyball program in 2011 under the direction of first-year head coach Lizzy Stemke, who takes the helm of a program for the first time after joining the Bulldogs from Nebraska, where she was an assistant coach for four years. Stemke is the sixth head coach in Georgia history. Season Opening Win vs. Liberty: Georgia won its season opening match for the second-straight year defeaing Liberty, 3-0, on Aug. 26. Georgia is now 25-9 all-time in season opening matches. UGA Finishes Runner Up In Hotel Indigo Bulldog Invitational: Georiga kicked off its 2011 campaign serving as host to the Hotel Indigo Bulldog Invitational. The Bulldogs opened up with 3-0 wins over Liberty and Florida A&M, but fell to Kansas, 3-0, to finish runner up in the event. Senior setter Kathleen Gates and sophomore outside hitter Kathleen Luft were named to the all-tournament team. Gates provided a tournamentbest 100 assists while Luft had 30 kills, 18 digs and six blocks. Two players, sophomore transfer Elena Perri and freshman Tirah Le au, made their Georgia debuts in the tournament. Perry had four kills vs. Florida A&M while Le au finished the weekend with six kills and five blocks. Assistant Coaches: Assisting Stemke in leading the Bulldogs in 2011 will be Brook Coulter and Josh Lauer. Coulter comes to Georgia from the University of Denver, where she spent the last four seasons as an assistant coach. Coulter has experience coaching with USA Volleyball including her most recent stint this past summer when she was an assistant with the U.S. Women s Junior A2 Team (Europe). Prior to her time at Denver, Coulter played professional volleyball in Europe from playing for teams in Austria, Spain, Germany and Slovenia. Lauer enters his first season at UGA after working the past three seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Alabama. Prior to his time with the Crimson Tide, Lauer worked four years as the head coach at the University of Missouri - St. Louis where he took his team from the bottom of the conference to a top five standing. The Tritons put together their first 10-plus conference match winning season in Lauer s final year after managing just four Great Lakes Valley Conference wins when he began in Lauer s coaching career got started at the club level where he spent eight years with the St. Louis CYC Volleyball Club Roster: Georgia s 2011 roster consists of 16 players including four seniors, two juniors, five sophomores and five freshmen. The Bulldogs return 10 letterwinners including five starters and the starting libero. The returning starters include senior setter Kathleen Gates, senior middle blocker Ann Dylla, senior libero Carla Tietz, sophomore outside hitters Kathleen Luft and Brittany Northcutt and sophomore defensive specialist Allison Summers.
