UAlbany opens the tournament against UC Riverside on Friday, September 12th at 11 a.m. ET, following with Grand Canyon at 5:30 p.m. ET. The squad takes on tournament host Northern Arizona the following day at 2 p.m. ET. This tournament features a number of relatively-new members of Division I. UAlbany takes on UC Riverside, which went DI in 2001, and Grand Canyon, which is in its second year of DI, for the first time in program history. The Great Danes and Northern Arizona will meet for the second time, with NAU picking up a 3-1 victory in 2007 in Flagstaff. STROILO S QUEST FOR 1000 DIGS Two-time America East Defensive Player of the Year Viktoriia Stroilo joined the 1,000-dig club. She earned 560 digs as a sophomore and 367 in her junior year, currently standing with 108 this season to total 1, UAlbany players have over 1,000 digs, led by Laurie Gonzalez, who earned 2,044 from Currently, Stroilo is 10th all-time in digs in UAlbany history. 2 LAST TIME: UALBANY DEFEATS BC, FALLS TO YALE AND MINNESOTA IN NEW HAVEN UAlbany opened the Yale Invitational last weekend with a five-set win over Boston College, falling to Yale and Minnesota to finish the tournament. Amanda Dolan was named to the All-Tournament Team, hitting.208 in the invite with 22 kills and nine blocks. Mikala McCauley earned double-doubles against Boston College and Yale, while Viktoriia Stroilo joined the 1,000-dig club vs. Boston College. YOUNG GUNS UAlbany s outside hitter corps is made up of four sophomores, reflecting the youth of the team. Amanda Dolan, the reigning America East Rookie of the Year, leads the unit after hitting.268 with 189 kills and 91 blocks. Amy Hunter was one of the top players down the stretch, earning 177 kills. Laini Leindecker will serve as a team captain after tallying 51 kills and 153 digs last year, while Olivia Schonewise was one of the top reserves, finishing with 86 kills and 59 digs. The UAlbany team is a young squad with four freshmen, seven sophomores, one junior and two seniors. The outside hitter and setter corps are made up entirely of underclassmen. CAN YOU DIG IT? UAlbany sported the best back row rotation in the America East last season, leading the conference in digs per set with per game. Four Great Danes finished in the top-16 in the conference in digs per set, led by Viktoriia Stroilo at #1 in the league and 38th in D-I that category with 4.96 per set. Samantha Brostrom, Mikala McCauley and Lauren Spreen finished 12th, 14th and 16th in the league respectively with 2.88, 2.84 and 2.73 digs per game respectively. STROILO - CANDIDATE FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD Viktoriia Stroilo has been named as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award in women s volleyball. CLASS stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School. Stroilo, a two-time America East Defensive Player of the Year, stands with a 3.74 GPA in biology, one of 15 of the 30 candidates with at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA. She is also the lone America East representative. Leading the team with 40 kills is sophomore outside hitter Fabiana Rosas, hitting.145 with 32 digs. Freshman middle blocker Alex Gresham has 20 kills and 11 blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Bri Holmes is hitting a team-best.178 with 33 kills. Grand Canyon stands at 5-1, coming off a second-place finish in the Gonzaga Invite. The leading hitter is senior Shannon Dugan, who stands with 96 kills, a.204 hit % and 58 digs. The Antelopes run a 6-2, going through sophomores Michelle Steagall with 115 assists and Leigh Stonerook with 109 assists, with middle blocker Hannah Hankins having 16 blocks and 34 kills. Northern Arizona is undefeated at 6-0 with the HBU Husky Classic and UTPA Tournament titles. Senior outside hitter Sydney Kemper is hitting.299 with 75 kills, 46 digs and 16 total blocks. Junior outside hitter Janae Vander Ploeg is close behind at 71 kills, adding 94 digs. Sophomore Jensen Barton sets, tallying 244 assists, 50 digs and 15 total blocks. LAST TIME IN FLAGSTAFF: UAlbany competed in the Hilton Garden Inn NAU Invitational to open the 2007 season. Under coach Kelly Sheffield, the Great Danes fell to New Mexico State 3-0 and Northern Arizona 3-1, shutting out UC Davis to finish the invitational. Ashley Crenshaw earned All-Tournament Team after hitting.554 with 52 kills on 83 attacks, committing just six attack errors. CALIFORNIA DREAMIN Three players have come across the country from the Golden State to suit up for the Purple and Gold. Two California players lock down the middle, with senior Sofia Furlong and junior team captain Tatum Jungsten, while freshman Emily Lopes plays as a setter. GLOBETROTTING DANES UAlbany sports four players from outside the United States from three different continents. Viktoriia Stroilo, a native of Ukraine, and Lara Temel, a newcomer from Turkey, hail from Europe. From New Zealand on the continent of Australia is Amy Hunter, and from St. Lucia in the North American Caribbean is Tyna William. GREAT DANES PICKED #4 IN AE PRESEASON POLL After finishing tied for second in the conference last season, UAlbany was predicted to finish fourth in the America East preseason coaches poll with 21 points. UMBC, the league runner-up in 2013, is predicted to finish first with 33 points, including three first-place votes. UNH is predicted to finish second, while Stony Brook is at third in the poll.

4 ENGSTROM APPROACHING TOP DI MARK AT UALBANY At the helm of UAlbany, MJ Engstrom has amassed 112 victories, winning the America East regular season five times and taking the title three times. She has been named the America East Coach of the Year in 2009 and She is just 30 matches away from tying Kelly Sheffield, who has 142 wins at UAlbany, for most DI wins at the school. In her coaching career, Engstrom has taken three different schools, UAlbany, Nicholls State and Villanova, to the NCAA Tournament. SAREEA FREEMAN JOINS UALBANY COACHING STAFF Former AVCA All-American and professional volleyball player Sareea Freeman joins the UAlbany volleyball team for the 2014 season as an assistant coach. A former volleyball and basketball standout at Florida State, Freeman played for the Vasas Volleyball Professional Sports Club in Hungary. The 6-foot-4 middle blocker led Florida State to the NCAA Second Round in all four seasons from , including a Final Four appearance in She joins Brooke Stanley, the first assistant in her second season, and Traci Vandegrift, back for her second season as the graduate assistant manager. ALISSA GIBBS INDUCTED IN UALBANY HALL OF FAME One of the top players around the turn of the century, Alissa Gibbs was inducted into the University at Albany Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of She currently ranks third all-time in UAlbany volleyball history with 1,376 kills. She also stands fifth all-time with 166 service aces, sixth with 3.72 kills per set and 10th with 992 digs. A two-time All-conference player, Gibbs was the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year and received the ECAC Merit Medal for being UAlbany s top female student-athlete in IN REVIEW After a tough start in non-conference play, UAlbany rallied in America East competition. The Great Danes held first place in the middle of conference play, finishing 9-5 to tie for second place in the league and earn a berth in the America East Tournament. UAlbany fell in the semifinals to UMBC, ending the season at 9-19 overall. Viktoriia Stroilo earned America East Defensive Specialist of the Year, while Amanda Dolan was named America East Rookie of the Year. Samantha Brostrom got First Team All- Conference, while Dolan and Stroilo got Second Team. Mikala McCauley was selected to the All-Rookie Team along with Dolan. STROILO EARNS SUNY CHANCELLOR S AWARD Viktoriia Stroilo, the 2013 America East Volleyball Scholar-Athlete, received the SUNY Chancellor s Award for Division I volleyball, recognizing the top student-athletes for each sport in the State University of New York system. Stroilo has a 3.74 cumulative GPA in biology. HEAD COACH MJ ENGSTROM MJ Engstrom enters her seventh season as head volleyball coach at the University at Albany in Engstrom has posted an overall record of and in America East play over her first six seasons. Her record includes three America East titles and as many NCAA appearances as a head coach. She previously coached Villanova and Nicholls State to NCAA tournament berths. In 2013, UAlbany finished tied for second place in the America East regular season with a team of eight freshmen and just three upperclassmen, going 9-5 in conference play and 9-19 overall. For the sixth season in a row, a Great Dane earned AE Defensive Player of the Year, with Viktoriia Stroilo leading the league in digs per set in conference matches. Amanda Dolan earned AE Rookie of the Year. Samantha Brostrom was placed on the All-Conference First Team, with Dolan and Stroilo going on the Second Team. Engstrom, a native of St. Paul, Minn., is on the editorial board for the International Journal for Volleyball Research and is a member of the USA Volleyball Sports Medicine and Performance Commission.
