UALBANY FINISHES HOME SEASON WITH PAIR OF MATCHES UAlbany returns home to play its final pair of home America East matches, taking on UNH on Friday, October 31st at 7 p.m. and UMass Lowell on Sunday, November 2nd at 2 p.m. UAlbany played these two teams in the first weekend in October, defeating each on the road in three sets. UAlbany will enter the weekend tied for third place in the America East at 4-3, standing 6-13 overall. New Hampshire is alone in first place in the league at 6-1 and UMass Lowell, which will play Binghamton on Friday, is looking for its first league win, entering the weekend at 0-7 in-conference and 2-22 overall. UALBANY TO CELEBRATE SENIOR DAY ON SUNDAY UAlbany s final regular season home match on Sunday vs. UMass Lowell will be Senior Day for the volleyball team. The team will celebrate the careers of its two seniors, Viktoriia Stroilo and Sofia Furlong. Stroilo, a member of the 1000-dig club, has served as UAlbany s libero the past three seasons. Furlong has been one of the most versatile players in the program the last three years, playing as middle blocker, outside hitter and setter. THE TEAM 1 OH/RS Olivia Schonewise So. 2 LAST TIME: UALBANY FALLS ON ROAD TO BEARCATS UAlbany won set two and nearly had a big comeback in the fourth set, but fell in four sets to travel partner Binghamton on the road last Friday. Laini Leindecker led the Great Danes with 18 kills, adding eight digs. Amanda Dolan hit.400 with 12 kills and six blocks, while Amy Hunter finished with 14 kills. UALBANY SWEEPS AMERICA EAST WEEKLY HONORS For the first time since 2002, UAlbany swept the AE volleyball weekly awards for the period ending October 13th. Amanda Dolan earned Player of the Week, Mikala McCauley was selected as Setter of the Week and Emily Lopes was Rookie of the Week. It is the first time since 2012 that the feat was accomplished. Dolan hit.426 with 31 kills on 61 attacks with only five attack errors, adding 14 blocks. McCauley had 95 assists and 23 digs, setting for a team that hit.204. Lopes tallied 34 digs and two aces in the back row. TOP BLOCKING TEAM IN THE LEAGUE... UAlbany sports the top statistical blocking team in the America East. The Great Danes average 2.21 blocks per set, the highestmark in the conference. Tatum Jungsten has 27 solo blocks, totaling 65 total blocks. Amanda Dolan leads the team with 76 total blocks, while Sofia Furlong stands with AND FIRST IN DIGS IN THE LEAGUE UAlbany is first in the conference in digs per set with 17.31, led by the best back row player in the America East in the last three years. Viktoriia Stroilo, the two-time reigning America East Defensive Player of the Year, averages 5.35 digs per set, 20th in the NCAA and first in the conference, totaling 353. Laini Leindecker, a six-rotation player, stands eighth in the league with 3.31 digs per set to total 255. VIKTORIIA STROILO - 1,000-DIG CLUB Two-time America East Defensive Player of the Year Viktoriia Stroilo joined the 1,000-dig club. She earned 560 digs as a sophomore and 367 in her junior year, currently standing with 353 this season to total 1, UAlbany players have over 1,000 digs, led by Laurie Gonzalez, who earned 2,044 from Currently, Stroilo is 6th all-time in digs in UAlbany history and third in the school s time in DI. She needs 104 digs to match 5th-place Jessica Volke s mark of 1,384 from STROILO - CANDIDATE FOR SENIOR CLASS AWARD Viktoriia Stroilo has been named as one of 30 candidates for the Senior CLASS Award in women s volleyball. CLASS stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School. The leading blocker is junior middle Cassidy Croci, who hits.239 with 125 kills and 65 total blocks. ALso in the middle, sophomore Demi Muses has tallied 148 kills, 164 digs and 57 blocks. UMass Lowell, under first-year head coach Resa Provanzano, is led by senior outside hitter Ella Merrill, who hits.120 with 206 kills and 104 digs. Senior libero Hannah Rey is second in the league in digs per set at 5.06, totaling 415, adding 11 aces. Senior middle Anisa Smith hits.111 with 163 kills and 42 blocks. LAST TIME THEY MET: UAlbany headed north to play UNH on October 5th, sweeping the reigning league champion, including using a set-finishing 6-0 run to win the second game Leindecker had 14 kills, while Olivia Schonewise hit.267 with 13 kills. On October 3rd, UAlbany traveled to Massachusetts to take on UMass Lowell. Coming back from down three in the first set and six in the second, UAlbany swept the River Hawks. Laini Leindecker earned a double-double on 16 kills and 19 digs. LAST YEAR IN THE AMERICA EAST: In 2013, after a 2-2 start, the Great Danes won three-consecutive matches at home against Stony Brook, UMass Lowell and UNH to tie for first place at 5-2. Following a defeat at Binghamton, UAlbany swept Stony Brook on the road to go to 6-3. In the final match of the year, UAlbany swept UMass Lowell to finish at 9-5, tying for second place in the league. CALIFORNIA DREAMIN Three players have come across the country from the Golden State to suit up for the Purple and Gold. Two California players lock down the middle, with senior Sofia Furlong and junior team captain Tatum Jungsten, while freshman Emily Lopes plays as a setter. GLOBETROTTING DANES UAlbany sports four players from outside the United States from three different continents. Viktoriia Stroilo, a native of Ukraine, and Lara Temel, a newcomer from Turkey, hail from Europe. From New Zealand on the continent of Australia is Amy Hunter, and from St. Lucia in the North American Caribbean is Tyna William. GREAT DANES PICKED #4 IN AE PRESEASON POLL After finishing tied for second in the conference last season, UAlbany was predicted to finish fourth in the America East preseason coaches poll with 21 points. UMBC, the league runner-up in 2013, is predicted to finish first with 33 points, including three first-place votes. UNH is predicted to finish second, while Stony Brook is at third in the poll.

4 ENGSTROM APPROACHING TOP DI MARK AT UALBANY At the helm of UAlbany, MJ Engstrom has amassed 117 victories, winning the America East regular season five times and taking the title three times. She has been named the America East Coach of the Year in 2009 and She is just 25 matches away from tying Kelly Sheffield, who has 142 wins at UAlbany, for most DI wins at the school. In her coaching career, Engstrom has taken three different schools, UAlbany, Nicholls State and Villanova, to the NCAA Tournament. SAREEA FREEMAN JOINS UALBANY COACHING STAFF Former AVCA All-American and professional volleyball player Sareea Freeman joins the UAlbany volleyball team for the 2014 season as an assistant coach. A former volleyball and basketball standout at Florida State, Freeman played for the Vasas Volleyball Professional Sports Club in Hungary. The 6-foot-4 middle blocker led Florida State to the NCAA Second Round in all four seasons from , including a Final Four appearance in She joins Brooke Stanley, the first assistant in her second season, and Traci Vandegrift, back for her second season as the graduate assistant manager. ALISSA GIBBS INDUCTED IN UALBANY HALL OF FAME One of the top players around the turn of the century, Alissa Gibbs was inducted into the University at Albany Athletic Hall of Fame in the fall of She currently ranks third all-time in UAlbany volleyball history with 1,376 kills. She also stands fifth all-time with 166 service aces, sixth with 3.72 kills per set and 10th with 992 digs. A two-time All-conference player, Gibbs was the America East Scholar-Athlete of the Year and received the ECAC Merit Medal for being UAlbany s top female student-athlete in IN REVIEW After a tough start in non-conference play, UAlbany rallied in America East competition. The Great Danes held first place in the middle of conference play, finishing 9-5 to tie for second place in the league and earn a berth in the America East Tournament. UAlbany fell in the semifinals to UMBC, ending the season at 9-19 overall. Viktoriia Stroilo earned America East Defensive Specialist of the Year, while Amanda Dolan was named America East Rookie of the Year. Samantha Brostrom got First Team All- Conference, while Dolan and Stroilo got Second Team. Mikala McCauley was selected to the All-Rookie Team along with Dolan. STROILO EARNS SUNY CHANCELLOR S AWARD Viktoriia Stroilo, the 2013 America East Volleyball Scholar-Athlete, received the SUNY Chancellor s Award for Division I volleyball, recognizing the top student-athletes for each sport in the State University of New York system. Stroilo has a 3.74 cumulative GPA in biology. HEAD COACH MJ ENGSTROM MJ Engstrom enters her seventh season as head volleyball coach at the University at Albany in Engstrom has posted an overall record of and in America East play over her first six seasons. Her record includes three America East titles and as many NCAA appearances as a head coach. She previously coached Villanova and Nicholls State to NCAA tournament berths. In 2013, UAlbany finished tied for second place in the America East regular season with a team of eight freshmen and just three upperclassmen, going 9-5 in conference play and 9-19 overall. For the sixth season in a row, a Great Dane earned AE Defensive Player of the Year, with Viktoriia Stroilo leading the league in digs per set in conference matches. Amanda Dolan earned AE Rookie of the Year. Samantha Brostrom was placed on the All-Conference First Team, with Dolan and Stroilo going on the Second Team. Engstrom, a native of St. Paul, Minn., is on the editorial board for the International Journal for Volleyball Research and is a member of the USA Volleyball Sports Medicine and Performance Commission.
