Twitter updates also will be available IN A NUTSHELL The Buckeyes are on the season and are winners of their last three matches, defeating Rutgers, 4-1, last time out in Columbus. Earlier this month, the team defeated back-to-back Top 20 opponents, downing No. 5 Louisville, 1-0, Sept. 30 before winning against No. 17 Michigan State, 3-2, Oct. 4 in Columbus. The team began the season with a five-match unbeaten streak, collecting wins against Northwestern and Elon, while claiming draws against Butler, UC Davis and UNC Wilmington. Ohio State is at home this season. Ohio State sits at No. 22 in the latest NCAA RPI poll. Ten opponents on the 2014 schedule rank in the Top 30. Senior midfielder Yianni Sarris leads the squad with a season-high 13 points on five goals and three assists, while Liam Doyle (5g, 0a), Kyle Culbertson (3g, 2a), Marcus McCrary (2g, 1a), Danny Jensen (3g, 1a) and Christian Soldat (2g, 1a) and Joao Ehlers (1g, 0a) have also netted scores. Senior goalkeeper Alex Ivanov, a Senior CLASS Award Finalist, is with a 0.90 goals-against average and.821 save percentage with six shutouts in 15 matches. The Buckeyes are3-2-2 at home this season. The Scarlet and Gray are second in the current Big Ten standings behind Penn State (5-2) with two conference matches remaining. Ohio State returns nine starters, including Ivanov, who was named a 2013 second All-Big Ten selection, while Jensen and Kidwell earned All-Freshmen Team laurels. John Bluem, who enters his 18th season as head coach of the Buckeyes, welcomes a total of 12 new players to Columbus, including a talented group of eight true freshmen. Ivanov, Jensen and Culbertson were each named to the Big Ten Preseason to Watch List SENIOR CLASS The 2014 senior class has made a combined 149 career starts and will look to guide the team for a postseason run in the coming weeks. Alex Ivanov, Yianni Sarris, Andrian McAdams, Zach Dobey, Konrad Kucharski, Ryan Ivancic and Max Moller will be recognized before the start of the contest vs. the Wildcats. JENSEN NAMED B1G OFFENSIVE POW Danny Jensen, a sophomore forward on the Ohio State men s soccer team, was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. Jensen, a native of Weston, Fla., receives his first career weekly honor. Jensen, who was named to the Big Ten Preseason to Watch List earlier this year, scored a pair of goals in the 4-1 conference win over Rutgers last weekend in Columbus. Jensen gave the squad an early 1-0 lead in the opening minute when he headed in a far cross by senior Max Moller from eight yards into the back of the net. The 2013 Big Ten All-Freshman team selection, Jensen then extended lead to 3-1 after netting his third goal of the season following a through ball pass from teammate Yianni Sarris at 45:28. LAST TIME OUT Sophomore Danny Jensen scored a pair of goals, while Liam Doyle and Kyle Culbertson also found the back of the net in the 4-1 over Rutgers last Saturday night in Columbus. Jensen netted home goals in the first and 46th minutes, respectively, while Doyle blasted in the team s second goal in the 36th minute on a free kick from 20 yards out. Culbertson concluded the scoring clinic when he volleyed in the team s fourth goal in the 65th. Overall, shots were 11-6 in favor of Ohio State, while the Buckeyes had a 5-3 lead in corner kicks in the first meeting between the two schools. SCOUTING KENTUCKY Behind the leadership of head coach Johan Cedergren, the Wildcats enter Tuesday with an overall record of and in the midst of a five-game winning streak. The Wildcats, who now hold first place in C-USA (4-0-2), have defeated three Top 25 opponents this year, including a 1-0 thriller against the defending national champions and then No. 1, Notre Dame, Sept. 8. Kentucky will look to continue their offensive momentum behind C-USA s most recent Offensive Player of the Week, Napo Matsoso, and the reigning NSCAA National Player of the Week, Justin Laird. The two have combined for nine goals, eight assists and 77 shots so far this season. 2 SERIES HISTORY Tuesday s matchup will mark the 14th time the two teams have met. The Buckeyes are in those games. The Buckeyes and Wildcats have not faced each other since 2005 when the game ended in a 1-1 draw in Columbus. Ohio State is unbeaten in its last five meetings with Kentucky, last losing at Kentucky, 2-0, in IVANOV NAMED SENIOR CLASS AWARD FINALIST Senior goalkeeper Alex Ivanov was named one of 10 finalsit for the 2014 Senior CLASS Award, the organization announced last week. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as a Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence community, classroom, character and competition. Ivanov is in his first year as captain for the Buckeyes. The native of Strongsville, Ohio, Ivanov graduated last spring with a bachelor s degree in electrical and computer engineering, collecting an impressive 3.70 cumulative GPA. He is currently pursuing a second degree in sports industry as a post graduate independent study this fall. In addition to his work in the classroom, Ivanov has volunteered with the 2nd and 7 Foundation, reading to elementary students. He also has been a part of three different Kids Kicking Cancer events. On the field, Ivanov was named a second team All-Big Ten selection and was selected as Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week three times during his junior season. This year, Ivanov has led the majority of the season in saves in the Big Ten. The Senior CLASS Award winners will be announced during the 2014 NCAA Men s and Women s College Cup championships in December. Fans are encourage to log on to the senior class award website and vote up to Nov. 24th A WEEK OF UPSETS The Buckeye unit claimed two key ranked wins against No. 5 Louisville and No. 17 Michigan State last month. It marked the first time since the 2007 College Cup run that team has beaten back-to-back nationally-ranked opponents. The victory over the Cardinals was the first Top 10 road win since the 2004 season. Senior midfielder Yianni Sarris scored the lone goal of the match against the Cardinals in the 34th minute off a Louisville turnover, while the OSU defense held the Cardinal offense to five shots in the second half and denied three corners. Alex Ivanov had three saves to help break a four-match win streak for Louisville. The team then jumped to second in the conference standings following a 3-2 victory against the Spartans. Liam Doyle struck the gamewinner in the 74th off a defection from a free kick from 30 yards out. Freshman forward Marcus McCrary scored his first career goal in the 15th minute, while Sarris netted the team s second goal in the 72nd minute. The Spartans came into the contest allowing just one goal the entire season. IN THE MIX Ohio State is No. 22 in the latest Ratings Percentage Index (RPI) published by the NCAA this week. Six Big Ten teams are in the Top 25, making the Big Ten and the Atlantic Coast with at least six teams in the Top 25 in the country. In all, ten opponents on the team s schedule are ranked in the Top 30. The RPI is one of the most important criteria to determine the field for the NCAA Division I Men s Tournament. It is a mathematical formula designed to objectively compare a team s won-lost record, opponents strength of schedule, opponents opponents strength of schedule and the bonus/ penalty system. BUCKEYE CAPTAINS Senior Alex Ivanov and junior Zach Mason were selected as captains for the 2014 campaign. The duo has combined for 90 career starts with Mason (52) starting every game of his career. EHLERS EARNS B1G WEEKLY HONOR Joao Ehlers, a junior forward on the Ohio State men s soccer team, was named Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Sept. 9. Ehlers, a native of Sao Paulo, Brazil, earns his first weekly honor of his Buckeye career. In just his second appearance in the Scarlet and Gray, Ehlers came into a scoreless match in overtime vs. Elon Sept. 7 and scored the gamewinning goal in the 92nd minute from 18 yards out to give Ohio State its first win of the 2014 season. The goal also marked the first of his career at Ohio State. Ehlers shares the honor with Patrick Doody of Indiana. YOUTH MOVEMENT Two freshmen have made appearances in the starting lineup this season, including Crew Academy product Hunter Robertson, who has made all 15 starts. Marcus McCrary has started in 11 matches for the Buckeyes. Overall, five of the Buckeyes usual Starting XI are underclassmen. UNC WILMINGTON CLASSIC CHAMPS Ohio State claimed the tournament title at the UNC Wilmington Classic Sept. 7 with a mark. Seniors Alex Ivanov and Yianni Sarris and sophomores Danny Jensen and Tyler Kidwell were named to the All-Tournament Team in Wilmington last weekend for their efforts, while Kidwell was named Defensive Player of the Tournament. WOLSTEIN RECAP Butler won the ninth annual Wolstein Classic with a mark Aug. 30-Sept. 1 in Bert L. & Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. The Bulldogs defeated Canisius, 2-0, before ending the tournament with a 2-2 draw vs. the Scarlet and Gray. Jeff Adkins was named tournament MVP after scoring twice in the classic. Ohio State (0-0-2) was the third-place team behind UC Davis (1-0-1), while Canisius rounded out the tourney with a mark. Sophomore Tyler Kidwell and junior Liam Doyle were the Buckeyes named to the all-tournament squad. BIG TEN PREDICTIONS Senior goalkeeper Alex Ivanov, junior defense Kyle Culbertson and sophomore forward Danny Jensen are among the 27 student-athletes deemed Players to Watch by the Big Ten at the start of the season. The team was selected ninth in the preseason coaches poll released Aug. 20. Maryland, who is ranked No. 2 in the NSCAA preseason Top 25 poll as the national runner-up, is a top of the preseason conference standings. Michigan State checked in at No. 2 in the preseason poll, followed by Michigan at No. 3, defending Big Ten champion Penn State at No. 4 and Indiana, the 2013 Big Ten Tournament champions, at No. 5 ROOKIE MAGIC Eight freshmen make up the Ohio State men s soccer team s rookie class, named No. 33 in the country by College Soccer News prior to the season. The group is the sixth-highest ranked class behind No. 2 Michigan, No. 10 Northwestern, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 13 Maryland and No. 32 Indiana. Six freshmen field players saw action in the preseason with several expected to play an integral role in the Buckeyes regular-season campaign. Iris S. Wolstein Field at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium this season with home Big Ten action kicking off Sept. 14 against Northwestern. Admission is free to all Ohio State men s soccer regular-season home games. COACHING CORNER John Bluem, the winningest coach in OSU program history, is in his 18th season at the helm of the Buckeyes. The three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year has a (.565) record at Ohio State. His career record, which includes six seasons at Fresno State, stands at for a.611 winning percentage.
