SETTING THE SCENE COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State men s soccer team heads to the Penn State Classic for matches with Hartford and Hofstra this weekend after capturing the Bert & Iris Wolstein Classic crown last weekend. The Buckeyes (1-0- 1) take on the Hawks at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by a noon contest Sunday vs. the Pride. Admission to the tournament at Jeffrey Field is free. Penn State will face the same opponents on opposite days, taking the field approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the OSU contests. Head coach John Bluem has ventured to Penn State for the Classic in nine of his 12 season at Ohio State, going in those 18 games. Last season, the Buckeyes shared a piece of the tournament title with Bucknell after they tied the Bison and then defeated then-no. 18 Tulsa, 2-0. Ohio State returns six starters from a year ago, including tri-captains Doug Verhoff, Andrew Magill and Matt Gold, for Bluem s 13th season at the helm of the Buckeye program. Seven true freshmen and three transfers join the 11 returning letterwinners to make up a young, but very talented squad. They tied a tough Gonzaga squad, 1-1, Sept. 4 before coming back to defeat the Titans, 1-0, with a late-game goal from Eric Shrigley. The redshirt freshmen scored with 18 seconds remaining in regulation, earning himself a spot on the all-tournament team along with junior captain Matt Gold and sophomore Dalton Summers. Doug Verhoff earned most valuable player honors, in addition to the all-tourney team spot. Ohio State is now all-time in its early-season tournament, the last four of which have been dubbed the Wolstein Classic. OHIO STATE IN A NUTSHELL The Buckeyes are off to a start, marking the thirdconsecutive season they have gone through the first weekend of play without a loss. Three players hold two points to their credit: Austin McAnena and Eric Shrigley, the two goal scorers thus far, and Konrad Warzycha, who has assisted on each tally. Matt Lampson and Ryan Dalton, both making their first collegiate appearances, split time in goal with Lampson making the start vs. Gonzaga and Dalton getting the nod against Cal State Fullerton. The OSU roster features six returning starters from a year ago, including central defenders, senior captain Doug Verhoff and sophomore David Tiemstra, and a pair of midfielders in junior captain Matt Gold and classmates Sam Scales and Konrad Warzycha. Up front, senior captain Andrew Magill enters the season with two years of starting experience under his belts. Joining the six are 10 others that spent time in a Buckeye uniform in 2008 and 10 talented newcomers. Ohio State finished the 2008 campaign with a record and a trip to the second round of the NCAA tournament, its third appearance in the postseason in the last four seasons and sixth overall. YOUTH IS SERVED In the first two games of the season, five Buckeye freshmen (true and redshirt) made at least one start, including goal-scorers Austin McAnena and Eric Shrigley. The Hawks earned back-to-back shutouts of Bryant (1-0) and Massachusetts (2-0) last week. Senior forward Carlos Villa paces the Hartford attack with help from Patrick Boucher and Ivan Guarin. Villa netted both goals in the win over UMass Sept. 5, continuing his scoring prowess from a year ago. In 2008, he led the team in points with 27 (12 goals, 3 assists) 21 more than the second-highest total. The defense, anchored by goalkeeper Nenad Cudic, has allowed just three shots on goal and 12 total shots through two games. Michigan State OHIO STATE Wisconsin Penn State Michigan Northwestern Indiana SCOUTING HOFSTRA Hofstra is off to a start to the season, defeating Stony Brook, 1-0, Sept. 1 before falling to Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-1, Sept. 6. The Pride earned its win over Stony Brook on a goal from freshman midfielder Stephan Barea, who scored 62 seconds into his collegiate career. Senior midfielder Rob Youhill assisted on the play, raising his career assist total to 16, tying him for fifth in Hofstra history. Sophomore midfielder Brett Carrington also is a scoring threat for the Pride after leading the team with 16 points (7 goals, 2 assists) in The defense is headlined by All-CAA First Team selection Richard Martinez and goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone, who started 12 games as a freshman last year and already has seven saves in each of the first two contests this season. SERIES HISTORY: (Last Meeting Hofstra, 2-1, Oct. 31, 1993) CORNERING THE MARKET Ohio State has taken twice as many corner kicks as its opponents, holding a 16-8 advantage after two games. Andrew Magill has taken 11 of the team s 16, with Nick Galiardi and Konrad Warzycha divvying up the remainder. PRESEASON WRAP-UP The Buckeyes wrapped up the preseason slate with a record against a pair of Big East teams, defeating Cincinnati, 5-1, and tying Louisville, 2-2. Andrew Magill and Doug Verhoff each finished with four points against the Bearcats Aug. 23, as Magill posted a goal and two assists and Verhoff added a pair of scores. Konrad Warzycha, David Tiemstra and Sebatian Rivas rounded out the goal-scorers. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Matt Lampson started the game between the pipes for Ohio State, holding the Bearcats scoreless for the first 45 minutes of action. Against Louisville Aug. 28, defenders Verhoff and Tiemstra once again found the back of the goal to drive the Buckeye scoring. The senior captain broke the zeros with a header off a free kick by Warzycha that went inside the left pole in the 25th minute. After the Cardinals tied the game at one, Tiemstra converted on a pass from rookie Chris Hegngi to give Ohio State back the lead. With primarily reserve players on the field, Louisville tied the match in the 72nd minute and the teams would end play after 90 minutes. Lampson started the game in net, playing 71 minutes and making six stops. EARLY RISERS After winning the Wolstein Classic last weekend, the Buckeyes are all-time in their early-season tournament, including a mark the last five seasons. Since 1991, Ohio State is in its first home game of the year, while John Bluem is in home season openers in his 13th season as head coach. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN Doug Verhoff, Andrew Magill and Matt Gold were named captains for the 2009 season through a vote of fellow players with the coaching staff holding final discretion. All three have held a steady spot in the starting lineup since their respective freshman seasons, including throughout the 2007 run to the College Cup final. All three of these young men are not only great players, but great leaders and great people, head coach John Bluem said of his captains. I am confident in their ability to lead this young team by example, both on and off the field, and show them the importance of hard work, determination and professionalism. TELL ME MOORE Follow senior Joe Moore s blog throughout the 2009 season on OhioStateBuckeyes.com. Moore is in his third season with the Buckeyes after transferring from Oral Roberts following the school year and is one of the oldest and most experienced members of the current squad. He also is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree as finance major. FREE FOR ALL Admission for all nine remaining home men s soccer matches will be free of charge during the upcoming season. The decision to eliminate admission prices for selected Ohio State sporting events came with careful consideration of the desire to grow attendance figures and the delicate economic climate, among other factors. The elimination of admission prices for men s and women s soccer, as well as men s and women s gymnastics grows Ohio State s admission is free list (regular season events only) to 24 sports. HOME, HOME IN THE JESSE Ohio State holds a record in Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium since the facility opened in 1999, including at least seven wins in each of the last three seasons. There currently are 11 home contests scheduled for the 09 season. OHIO STATE PICKED FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL The Buckeyes were selected to finish fourth in the Big Ten in a poll of conference coaches last week. Indiana was selected as the favorite for the seventh-consecutive season, while Northwestern came in second and defending champion Michigan State rounded out the Top 3. Following the Buckeyes, Penn State and Wisconsin hold a tie for fifth and Michigan comes in at No. 7. BLUEM IN HIS 13th SEASON AT OSU Head coach John Bluem is in his 13th season at the helm of the Buckeyes with an OSU record of and a 17-plus year career mark of , a figure that puts him among the Top 35 active NCAA coaches in total 2009 Ohio State Soccer // OhioStateBuckeyes.com 2

Under his guidance, the Buckeyes entered the most successful era of program history, complete with three Big Ten titles, 10 Major League Soccer draft picks and all six of Ohio State s appearances in the NCAA tournament, including the 2007 College Cup. GOODE IS BETTER Taly Goode joined the coaching staff in June as an assistant coach, working primarily with goalkeepers, after three years in a similar position at Ohio Dominican. Prior ODU, Goode spent three seasons with the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer after being originally drafted out of Marshall University by the Atlanta Silverbacks of the A-League. He lettered four years at Marshall during the seasons. FAMILIAR FACES A pair of volunteer coaches has been added for the 2009 season. Former Buckeye Danny Irizarry will patrol the sidelines as an undergraduate assistant as he finishes his degree at Ohio State, while retired Major League Soccer player Brandon Moss becomes a volunteer assistant after playing two years with the Columbus Crew.
