Michigan State will host its fi nal two home games of the season this week, against Valparaiso (Oct. 18) and Northwestern (Oct. 22). Following week No. 9, the Spartans have only two more regular-season games remaining, traveling to Western Michigan (Oct. 25) and Ohio State (Oct. 29). IN REVIEW Michigan State (7-5-2, Big Ten) went in week eight. MSU stayed within one goal of No. 8 Notre Dame for much of the evening, on Oct. 11, but two late Irish scores sent the Spartans home from South Bend, Ind., with a 3-0 loss. A penalty kick by senior captain Matt Kreikemeier with 10 seconds remaining in regulation gave Michigan State a 2-1 victory over Loyola-Chicago on Oct. 15. Doug DeMartin also scored in the winning effort, his fi rst goal of the season. ON THE MONEY Matt Kreikemeier has scored three goals this season, two of those two game-winners, and each have been generated on penalty kicks. Kreikemeier is a perfect 3-for-3 from the stripe this season. VIEWING VALPO Valparaiso owns a 7-6-0, Mid-Con record in The Crusaders fell in their last outing on Oct. 14, 1-0, to IUPUI. Michigan State has defeated Valpo in the last fi ve-consecutive meetings, including a 2-0 win last season, with the Spartans out-scoring the Crusaders 19-3 during that span. MSU has won eight out of the last nine matches between the two teams, with the Crusaders lone, 2-1, win coming at Old College Field in SIZING UP NORTHWESTERN MSU is against Northwestern over the last fi ve meetings. The Wildcats got the best of the Spartans last year, in Evanston, Ill., winning 2-0. Northwestern is overall and in the Big Ten this season, most recently picking up a 2-0 shutout over Michigan on Oct. 15. The Wildcats have beaten the Spartans once at Old College Field in 12 meetings (2-1, Oct. 18, 1988). MSU VS. THE BIG TEN The Spartans are in search of their fi rst Big Ten win. MSU battled Wisconsin to a scoreless tie (Sept. 24) and fell at Penn State (Sept. 17), 3-1, and to Indiana in double overtime, 2-1 (Oct. 1). In its last Big Ten outing, MSU battled Michigan to a 1-1 tie (Oct. 8). ONE GOAL DIFFERENCE Of the Spartans 14 games this season, nine have been decided by one goal, in addition to two ties. Michigan State is 6-3 in one-goal decisions, with two of those losses coming in double overtime. The Spartans have not scored more than two goals in a game this season, and have only notched more than one goal on three occasions. WORKING OVERTIME Six of Michigan State s contests have gone into overtime this year, with the Spartans owning a record in extra play. MSU kicked off the 2006 season with two overtime wins at the Oregon State/Diadora Classic, Aug The Spartans defeated Sacramento State 1-0 in overtime and toppled UC Riverside 2-1 in two extra periods of play. The Green and White fell to Northern Illinois, 1-0, in double overtime at the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic on Sept. 3 and played to a 0-0 tie with Wisconsin on Sept. 24. SPARTANS CELEBRATE 50 The 2006 season marks the 50th anniversary of men s soccer at Michigan State. The program honored the 50th anniversary homecoming weekend, Sept. 30 Oct. 1. As part of the celebration, members of past Spartan teams were recognized at homecoming football game and at a halftime ceremony during the MSU vs. Indiana soccer game. Several hundred soccer alumni gathered for the event. TOPS AT STATE Entering the 2006 season, the 50th year of the program, the Spartan men s soccer team has compiled an overall record of , good for a.640 winning percentage - making it the winningest program of any team sport in MSU history. JOE BAUM INDUCTED INTO ST. LOUIS SOCCER HALL OF FAME Head coach Joe Baum was inducted into the St. Louis Soccer Hall of Fame on Sept. 21. The Hall of Fame honors athletes, coaches and those in the soccer community from the St. Louis and Missouri area. Baum, who also was a talented goal keeper at MSU, leading the Spartans to two NCAA Co-Championships (1967, 68), was recognized for his coaching accomplishments. In his 30th season, Baum has the longest current coaching tenure at MSU. TILLMAN BIG TEN PLAYER OF THE WEEK, TWICE Michigan State goalkeeper Jason Tillman was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week and earned a spot on the Top Drawer Soccer Team of the Week, on Sept. 25. Tillman earned the honors after posting shutouts against Bowling Green and Wisconsin. Tillman was also tabbed Big Ten Player of the Week on Sept. 11, after posting two shutouts against Virginia Commonwealth and Butler. Upping his season shutout total to six, Tillman has recorded 18-career shutouts. He has collected four Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week awards in his career, including two in WEEK SEVEN Michigan State went in week seven, falling to Oakland, 2-1, on Oct. 4 and battling Michigan to a 1-1 tie on Oct. 8. Junior Ben Pirmann scored his fi rst collegiate goal in the loss against Oakland. Senior captain Matt Kreikemeier notched the Spartan goal against Michigan, via penalty kick. The Spartans have gone on the U-M Soccer Field since 2000 and have not lost to the Wolverines since WEEK SIX No. 14 Indiana used a penalty kick late in the second half and a score in the 107th minute to edge Michigan State, 2-1, at Old College Field on Oct. 1. The Spartans struck fi rst in the game, on a goal by Kenzo Webster. It was Michigan State s fi fth overtime game this season and second in as many games. WEEK FIVE The Spartans were in week fi ve. Matt Kreikemeier sank a penalty kick in the 19th minute to lift Michigan State past Bowling Green, 1-0, Sept. 20. The win marked the Spartans third-consecutive victory over the Falcons. MSU and Wisconsin combined for 25 shots on Sept. 24, but neither team could connect for a goal, resulting in a 0-0 tie. It marked Spartan goalkeeper Jason Tillman s sixth shutout of the season.

The Spartans gained national attention after their 1-0 upset over No. 3 New Mexico on Sept. 1. Michigan State s score was generated off the bench as non-starters Louis Stephens III and Kevin Reiman hooked up for the goal. WOLVERINE INVITATIONAL The Green and White picked up two wins at the Wolverine Invitational, hosted by Michigan. The Spartans pulled off a 1-0 upset over No. 19 (Soccer America) Virginia Commonwealth on Sept. 8. MSU then handed Butler a 2-0 loss on Sept. 10. Kenzo Webster tallied each of the Spartans three goals. A LOOK AT THE SPARTANS The Spartans return 15 letterwinners and seven starters from their 2005 campaign, fi nishing the season with an record. Senior goalie Jason Tillman was named the Defensive MVP, posting a total of eight saves in two shutouts over the weekend. MSU FALLS IN DOUBLE OVERTIME TO NORTHERN ILLINOIS With 15 seconds remaining in the second overtime period, Marcus McCarty tapped in the game-winning goal for Northern Illinois as the Huskies edged past MSU, 1-0, on Sept. 3 at the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic. SPARTANS STUN NO. 3 NEW MEXICO Spartan junior Kenzo Webster scored the winning goal in Michigan State s 1-0 upset against No. 3 New Mexico at the MSU/ Radisson Fall Classic on Sept. 1. The win over the Lobos, ranked third in the National Soccer Coaches Association preseason poll and the 2005 national runners-up, gave the Spartans their biggest upset since beating Indiana, the reigning national champion, 2-1, in the semifi nals of the Big Ten Tournament in Kenzo Webster tallied the winning goal. ZAC ATTACK Sophomore Zac Scaffi di led the Spartan offense at the OSU/Diadora Classic (Aug ) with a goal and an assist. Scaffi di scored the game-winner in MSU s 1-0 OT win over Sacramento State, in the 97th minute. It was just Scaffi di s second goal of his career and his fi rst-ever game-winner. In MSU s 2-1 double OT win over UC Riverside, Scaffi di notched an assist on the Spartans fi rst strike, lacing a feed to Kenzo Webster. Scaffi di paced the offense at the classic with eight shots, fi ve of those on goal.
