The first commencement exercise was held in the Field House in The Field House was the home of the UW boxing team from , when boxing was an NCAA sport. An all-sport record crowd of 15,200 watched the Wisconsin vs. Washington State boxing match in Muhammad Ali suffered one of his few losses as an amateur boxer during the 1959 Pan American Games trials. Notable speakers in the Field House include presidential candidate John F. Kennedy in 1960, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Bob Hope and the Dalai Lama. She needs 24 more blocks to move into second and 88 blocks to take over the top spot. Reineke currently ranks sixth on the Big Ten career record list. Kills for the Defense In the last three matches, the Badgers defensive specialists have recorded kills, a rare occurrence for the back-row players. Against Iowa, senior Amanda Berkley (Racine, Wis.) took a Hawkeye attack and set the ball back over the net on the first contact, scoring a kill to the corner. It was her third kill of the season and the seventh of her career. Against both Indiana and Minnesota, senior Megan Mills (Portage, Wis.) recorded kills when her digs went over the net and dropped in for kills. The 5-6 Mills has three kills this season and five kills in her career. Salow Off the Bench Junior Morgan Salow (Manchester, Iowa) came off the bench at Iowa last Saturday night to spark the Badgers to the win. The 6-4 opposite hitter played in three games, recording seven kills on 18 attempts for a.389 hitting percentage. She also added one block. Four of Salow s kills came in game three, bringing Wisconsin back from a deficit to tie the game at 18. Another Salow kill put Wisconsin up Kuzma On the Defense Freshman Kim Kuzma (Muncie, Ind.) played a key defensive role for the Badgers in their win at Iowa. The 5-7 defensive specialist recorded 14 digs in the match, her second double-figure dig match of the season. She also added a careerhigh two assists, setting up Badger kills. On the season, Kuzma ranks second on the team with 2.43 digs per game. European Vacation The Badgers traveled to Europe for 13 days last summer for their NCAAallowed overseas training and competition tour. Wisconsin visited the Czech Republic (Prague and Brno), Austria (Vienna), Slovenia (Maribor) and Italy (Venice and Rome). The UW played five matches, including two against the Italian Junior National Team, finishing with a 1-4 record. My absolute favorite part of the trip was watching the team mature on and off the court, said coach Pete Waite. On the court, they improved from beginning to end and it gave us a glimpse of some of the exciting play we ll see this fall. Sister Duo For the first time since the 2000 season, the Badgers have a sister duo on the team. Senior Jocelyn Wack and freshman Allison Wack are competing together for the first time since Jocelyn was a senior in high school. That year, the duo from Salem, Wis., led Westosha Central High School to the 2003 WIAA State Division I Championship. UW Hosts Regional Wisconsin will host an NCAA Regional for the first time since 2000 and for the first time since the NCAA went to pre-determined regional sites in Two regional semifinal matches will be held in the UW Field House on Dec. 7 at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. with the winners playing on Dec. 8 at 8 p.m. for the right to advance to the NCAA championship on Dec. 13 and 15 in Sacramento, Calif. The last time the Badgers hosted a regional, Wisconsin downed Kansas State in the regional semifinal, 3-1, before edging UCLA, 3-2, for the right to advance to the final four. The UW finished the season second, downing USC, 3-0, in the national semifinals before losing to Nebraska, 3-2, in the championship match. Carroll Leaves Team Senior Maya Carroll (Whitefish Bay, Wis.) left the UW team before the season started to accept an internship with the new Big Ten Network.
