5 The goal for the Pitt team and head coach Dan Fisher in 2016 is clear: make the NCAA Tournament SEASON PREVIEW O Neill will also look to step up in the middle as she sees more playing time. The new season has arrived for Fisher and the Panthers, as they head to Kennesaw, Ga., this weekend to open the season at the Kennesaw State Invitational. As Pitt enters the 2016 season, the team has its eyes set on postseason play after narrowly missing the NCAA Tournament each of the past two seasons. After just missing the playoff bracket in 2014 with a stellar 25-6 record, the squad was denied a berth to the NCAA Tournament for second straight season in Even with a 23-9 mark and a sweep over ranked Florida State, the Panthers once again failed to qualify for postseason. Having gone through not just last year but two years in a row of missing the NCAA Tournament, our goal is pretty clear, Fisher said. With a talented group of returners, seven newcomers and tough schedule, Fisher hopes to make Pitt s goal a reality. Returning Players The Panthers return five starters in redshirt senior middle hitter Jenna Potts, senior outside hitter Maria Genitsaridi, junior outside hitter Mariah Bell, redshirt sophomore libero Angela Seman and sophomore setter Kamalani Akeo. In an effort to replace two time All-Americans Amanda Orchard and Kadi Kullerkann, Fisher will look to Potts and Genitsaridi to lead the team. Following in Orchard s footsteps, Potts was named to the 2016 Preseason All-ACC Volleyball Team announced earlier this month. She will look to fill the void that Orchard left on the offensive end of the ball and maintain her performance on the defensive side. Potts returns as Pitt s top defensive player at the net, after finishing last season with a team-best 1.25 blocks/set and 143 total blocks. Her effort at the net placed her seventh in the ACC in blocks/set and earned her a spot in the top-50 in the nation. This summer, Potts, along with junior middle blocker Kelsey O Neill, trained and competed with the U.S. Collegiate National Volleyball Team Indianapolis Roster after being selected to the squad following extensive tryouts in February at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. On the outside, Genitsaridi and Bell, along with sophomore Adeline Ellis and returning redshirt freshman Stephanie Williams will look to pace the Panthers offensively. Genitsaridi and Bell saw consistent playing time last year, while Ellis will look for increased playing time in Williams, who was predicted to be one of the Panthers top performers last year, returns to the court following a season-ending injury early in the 2015 season. Setting up the Pitt hitters will be Akeo and sophomore Ellie Watkins. Akeo split time with recent graduate Jenna Jacobson last season and will do the same this year with Watkins. Seman, the Panthers leading libero, will return to her post in the back row. The Pittsburgh native ranked fifth in digs (4.55/set) in the ACC last year. Aiding Pitt in the back row as well will be sophomore libero Hanna Markewycz, who saw limited playing time last season. Newcomers Six freshmen including Kylee Levers, Layne Van Buskirk, Alix Dreier, Avery Perosa, Nika Markovic and Zoi Faki, and sophomore transfer Emily Horner will round out the Panthers lineup for Fisher extended his recruiting efforts internationally by bringing in Van Buskirk from Canada, Markovic from Slovenia and Faki from Greece Schedule To help increase Pitt s chances of making the NCAA Tournament, Fisher is playing the RPI game, scheduling top-ranked RPI teams out of conference in addition to its tough ACC schedule. The Panthers are set to play five preseason ranked opponents and two that received votes in the initial AVCA Coaches Poll. This year s slate features 11 teams that appeared in the 2015 NCAA Tournament, including four conference opponents in Louisville, Florida State, North Carolina and Miami. Pitt s non-conference schedule will be no easy feat as it is highlighted with games against some of the top-ranked teams in the nation including Missouri, American, Michigan and Western Kentucky. All four teams reached the second round of last year s tournament, while three other of the Panthers non-conference opponents bowed out after the opening round.
