3 2012 SEASON NEWS AND NOTES PITT S RECORD WHEN... ACTON NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT: Margy Acton was named to the Mortar Board Premier All-Tournament Team hosted by Purdue. Acton recorded double-digit digs in all three matches, including two against na onally-ranked opponents. ZITZKE EARNS BIG EAST HONOR ROLL: Se er Lindsey Zitzke was on the first Big East Weekly Honor Roll of the season for her play at the Mortar Board Premier. Zitzke registered 74 assists, 21 digs, 10 kills and five blocks in West Lafaye e. PITT CLAIMS HOME TOURNY TITLE: The Panthers went 3-0 at the University of Pi sburgh Panthers Invita onal to take home the tle. Pi defeated Coastal Carolina, Howard and Butler all via three set sweeps. Jasmine Di rich was named tournament MVP, while Alexa Campbell and Lindsey Zitzke were named to the all-tournament team. PANTHERS WIN 14 STRAIGHT SETS: Pi put together a streak of 14 consecu- ve sets won. The streak started against Coastal Carolina and was snapped in the third set of a four-set victory against Sam Houston State. During the stretch, Pi swept four teams in a row (CCU, Howard, Butler and Cleveland State). ACTON REACHES 1,000 DIG PLATEAU: With 29 digs against Sam Houston State at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic, Margy Acton became the 10th player in program history to reach the 1,000 dig plateau. Her 29 digs were also a tournament match record. PANTHERS WIN SUGAR BOWL CLASSIC: The Panthers won their second-consecu ve tournament by winning all three matches at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Classic hosted by Tulane. Lindsey Zitzke was named tournament MVP, while Margy Acton and Alexa Campbell were selected to the all-tournament team. SEVEN IN A ROW: Pi sburgh put together a span of seven straight victories, its longest winningstreak since the 2009 campaign when the Panthers won 11 in a row. ZITZKE EARNS SECOND BIG EAST HONOR: Se er Lindsey Zitzke earned her second BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll accolade for her MVP performance at the Sugar Bowl Classic. Zitzke averaged assists per set and had double-doubles in all three matches. She also contributed 38 digs, 11 kills, eight blocks and six service aces. ANOTHER ALL-TOURNY FOR ACTON: Margy Acton represented Pi on the all-tournament team at the Ball State Tournament, averaging 5.11 digs per set. Acton made three of the four alltournament teams this season. A CAREER WEEK FOR CAMPBELL: Senior Alexa Campbell landed on her first career BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll a er leading the Panthers in kills in three straight matches, including a career-high 21 kills at Rutgers. She also added double-digit digs in all three of those contests. WIGNOT S MOVE TO MIDDLE: Junior Monica Wignot moved from outside hi er to Middle Blocker during the week before Marque e and Syracuse, and it paid off. She recorded 15 kills against the Golden Eagles and 12 more against the Orange has she earned BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the first me this season. WIGNOT SETS NEW CAREER-HIGH: Monica Wignot had a team-high 15 kills and a career-best 11 blocks in a five set victory at DePaul. The junior middle had two solo blocks and nine block assists. She bacame the first Pi player this season to have double-digit blocks. 5 Head Coach Toby Rens Fifth Season Toby Rens enters his fi h season at the helm of the University of Pi sburgh women's volleyball program. He is the first coach to earn four consecu ve Big East Tournament appearances during his first four years with the Panthers. During Rens' tenure, Pi has proven to be a force at the net, pos ng a 2.42 blocks per set average. The Panthers defense overall has steadily increased as they went from collec ng digs per set in 2008 to in Rens has also guided three student-athletes to American Volleyball Coaches Associa on (AVCA) All-America status since First, Meagan Dooley captured AVCA All-America First Team honors in 2009, while libero Michelle Rossi garnered honorable men on accolades. In 2011, Kiesha Leggs was selected to the AVCA All-America honorable men on list a er being named an AVCA All-District awardee. Addi onally, Leggs became just the fi h Panther in the last 15 seasons to tally more than 400 kills and 100 blocks in a single-season Record at Pi Overall Record Under Rens' guidance, mul ple players have been named to All-Big East teams while Dooley was a Big East Scholar Athlete of the Year in That year, Dooley was also the recipient of Pi 's pres gious Blue-Gold and Panther Awards. She is only the second student-athlete to ever accomplish that feat. Later, Amy Town (2010) became the second-consecu ve member of the volleyball team to etch her name in the coveted Pi Varsity Walk. During the 2009 season, Rens led the Panthers to their best record since 2006, posting a mark and going 12-2 in conference play to finish ed for second. The 12 Big East wins were more than any other Pi team has recorded in the program s history since conference play began in The 2009 season was filled with accomplishments including Big East Player of the Year (Dooley) and Big East Libero of the Year (Rossi). Pi set a school record for straight-set shutouts in conference play (eight). Addi onally, a win over No. 18 Wichita State led to the Panthers earning votes in the Top 25 Coaches Poll that year. The Panthers finished the season with a top 50 na onal ranking, according to the final NCAA Division I Volleyball RPI. Pi was ranked seventh in blocks per set (2.86), 24th in assists per set (13.04), ed for 25th in kills per set and 38th in hi ng percentage (.247) among NCAA Division I teams. In his first season with the Panthers, Rens guided Pi to a quarterfinal upset over No. 2 seed and regular-season champion Cincinna. Trailing 2-0 in the five-set thriller, Pi rallied back to win the three games that followed intermission. The Panthers ended a 15-match win streak for the Bearcats and secured their first conference tournament victory since defea ng Syracuse (3-0) in Before Rens came to Pi, he developed the Long Island University women's volleyball program as a perennial NCAA Tournament team and Northeast Conference power. Rens completed a four-year tenure at LIU and witnessed the Blackbirds earn Northeast Conference tles and automa c NCAA Tournament berths each season. LIU averaged 26.5 victories a year under Rens, including the winningest season in LIU history: a 32-7 mark in Rens coached three Northeast Conference Player of the Year honorees at LIU, while also being tabbed the 2005 NEC Coach of the Year. Overall, 18 LIU players earned All-NEC accolades under his guidance. Prior to LIU, Rens served as head coach at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore and Northern Michigan University. In addi on to his head coaching s nts, Rens served as an assistant at Texas Tech (2000), George Washington ( ), Tennessee Tech (1993) and his alma mater, Morningside College (1992). He is highly ac ve in na onal volleyball circles, serving as a member of the NCAA Division I Head Coaches Commi ee and as a voter in the USA Today Top 25 Coaches Poll. A na ve of Sioux City, Iowa, Rens graduated from Morningside in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in physical educa on.
