Moby Arena 2018 marks the 50th season of volleyball at Florida State, and the 11th season under head coach Chris Poole. The Seminoles will face TCU and Colorado State this weekend, two teams they saw last season at the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitational. FSU went 2-1 at the tournament, with its only loss coming to CSU. The team will see three AVCA Top-25 programs in their non-conference schedule this season. Including this year, Poole and the Seminoles have faced 34 ranked opponents in the preseason since his arrival in Florida State has defeated an AVCA Top-25 team without being ranked five times under Coach Poole -- a 3-0 sweep over No. 8 Illinois in 2009, a 3-1 victory over No. 23 Tulsa in 2011 and a 3-0 win over Miami in the same year. FSU went to the Elite Eight in 2009 and the Final Four in The Seminoles will have 24 games broadcast on either a digital or linear channel, including one match on ESPN2, one on Big Ten Network, one on BTN Plus, one on Mountain West network, one on SEC Network, and 19 on ACC Network Extra. FSU holds a 1, all-time record. 5 MATCH #3: TCU SCOUTING THE HORNED FROGS TCU opened the 2018 season hosting the Cowtown Classic, where they sweept UAB, Green Bay and SIUE, and then turned around to defeat North Dakota in four sets at home on Sunday. Freshman Élan McCall earned the Big 12 Rookie of the Week honor after her performance in opening weekend, tallying 59 total kills and a team-best 4.54 kills per set. 6 SEASON AT A GLANCE FSU PICKED THIRD IN ACC: Florida State was tabbed to finish third in the conference this season after finishing in a tie for fifth in The Seminoles placed two on the All-ACC Team, sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth and junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey. TOP-10 OPENING WEEKEND: The Seminoles took on No. 4 Minnesota and No. 9 Wisconsin in opening weekend at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. FSU fell to both teams at the Target Center on Friday and Sunday, but took the first set from the Badgers. Recorded two kill-assist-dig triple-doubles in 2017, the first in FSU history to record the stat multiple times. Her 2,309 career assists places 6 th in FSU s rally scoring history. HOSPITALITY Entering her fourth season with FSU, Ambrose has been a consistent force as an outside hitter and has been developing her skills in the back row this offseason. The only Seminole to earn double-digit kills in both opening weekend matches against No. 4 Minnesota and No. 9 Wisconsin; earned her first career double-double against the Badgers (16 kills, 14 digs). 11 // ASHLEY MURRAY REDSHIRT SENIOR 6 2 MIDDLE BLOCKER LOS ANGELES, CALIF. INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS Murray comes to FSU from Long Beach State for her redshirt senior season in 2018 after sitting out in 2017 with a medical redshirt. With the 49ers, she earned First Team All-Big West honors in 2016 and was named the Big West Freshman of the Year in 2014, when she led the Beach with 1.21 blocks per set, which ranked fourth in the conference. Her father is Lamond Murray, a former basketball star at Cal who played in the NBA for 12 seasons, her mother is Carmen Murray, founder and CEO of Title 9 Productions, and her godfather is famous recording artist Drake. 13 // TARYN KNUTH SOPHOMORE 6 3 MIDDLE BLOCKER JOHNSTON, IOWA HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT Preseason All-ACC selection. ACC Freshman of the Year, AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year and Second Team All-ACC in Led the conference and ranked 11 th nationally in blocks per set in 2017 (1.49); ranked third in the ACC and 17 th nationally with 162 total blocks. Her 1.49 career blocks/set currently ranks first in FSU s rally scoring era and third all-time. 15 // PAYTON CAFFREY JUNIOR 6 0 OUTSIDE HITTER CHULUOTA, FLA EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY Preseason All-ACC selection. Led the team in kills (19), total attacks (53), aces (2), digs (20), and total points (22) in FSU s match against No. 9 Wisconsin on Aug. 25. She led the match overall in kills, attacks, digs and points. Caffrey comes to FSU from West Virginia, where she was a First Team All-Big 12 selection in 2017 and the AVCA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year in // DEJA WILLIAMS SOPHOMORE 6 0 MIDDLE BLOCKER SUWANEE, GA. BUSINESS FINANCE Tallied four total blocks in the Seminoles opening weekend, and added on three kills on 19 total attacks. One of three returning sophomore middle blockers this season, a group of young players who filled in the open position last season. L 20 // KELSEY WICINSKI SENIOR 5 10 LIBERO GENEVA, ILLINOIS SOCIAL SCIENCE After playing for two years at Maryland, Wicisnki sat out for half of her junior season before transfering to FSU for her senior year. In 2017, she tallied 20+ digs in six matches and was named to the Liberty Invitational and Maryland Challenge All-Tournament teams. Led the team and ranked third in the Big Ten with 4.22 digs per set in 2016 Brings Big Ten experience to FSU, and has helped the team prepare for opening weekend at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. FIRST OFF THE BENCH: #5 Annie Tietjens (R-Jr S St. Louis, Mo. Psychology) Recorded 2 assists and 2 digs against No. 9 Wisconsin; ranked second on the team last season with 225 assists and 3.21 assists per set. #8 Tiana Jackson (So. MB O Fallon, Mo. 11 50 YEARS OF WOMEN S INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS: Florida State celebrates the 50th year of women s intercollegiate athletics in the season. Volleyball was the first varsity women s sport at FSU, as the program started in The Seminoles will celebrate the milestone with a series of celebrations and reunions, and will promote the campaign on social media using #GarnetandGolden. DOMINANT DECADE: FSU is one of only 12 programs in the country to make the last nine NCAA Tournaments (along with Colorado State, Florida, Hawaii*, Iowa State, Kentucky, Nebraska*, Penn State*, Stanford*, Texas*, USC* and Washington*). The Seminoles have also been ranked in the AVCA Top 15 at some point for the last nine seasons, all under Coach Poole. *National Champions WARRIOR ON: The team s motto and theme for the 2018 season is Warrior On, a nod to the personal mantra of sophomore Taryn Knuth s mother, who gifted tokens with the phrase to every member of the team prior to the season. The team has discussed what the phrase means to each of them individually, and it is a mindset that is kept as a reminder to push through whatever challenges and obstacles they may face throughout the season. Four different players earned a double-double in the team s opening weekend at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, including returners BRIANNE BURKERT and CHRISTINA AMBROSE, and newcomers PAYTON CAFFREY and ADRIAN ELL. Ell recorded the stat in her first ever collegiate match. PAYTON CAFFREY made her first appearance as a Seminole in the Big Ten/ ACC Challenge on August 24-25, leading the team in five different statistical categories in Saturday night s match against No. 9 Wisconsin with 19 kills, 53 attacks, 2 aces, 20 digs and 22 total points earned. Returning for her redshirt freshman season, ADRIAN ELL will support the offense as a setter this year. In her first appearance as a Seminole, Ell recorded a double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs against No. 4 Minnesota. Ell battled Hodgkin s Lymphoma in high school, which forced her to sit out her junior year. She returned to her club team at the end of the 2016 season to help them capture the USAV 17 National Championship. Last season, BRIANNE BURKERT became the first Seminole since Cassie McLaughlin (2003) to earn a triple double, and the first to earn multiple in a season or career since Vicki Zinkil earned two in She is also the first to ever record multiple kill-assist-dig triple-doubles. At the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Knuth led the team in attack percentage against No. 9 Wisconsin (.312) and had the second-best percentage among both teams. Last season she led the conference and was ranked 11th nationally in blocks per set with Knuth earned Preseason All-ACC honors for the season. Redshirt senior transfer ASHLEY MURRAY comes to FSU from Long Beach State for the 2018 season. Murray s father is Lamond Murray Sr., a former professional basketball player, and her mother is Carmen Murray, a music producer and founder and CEO of Title 9 Productions. She is the goddaughter to popular recording artist Drake.

Consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in his tenure, making FSU one of only 12 programs to make the last nine tournaments. Contests with AVCA Top-25 teams since he started overseeing scheduling in AVCA TOP-25 WINS UNDER COACH POOLE Entering his eleventh year at Florida State, head coach Chris Poole has established the Seminoles as fixture in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 and among the elite programs in the nation, as he has rejuvenated a program that has proven itself as a national contender year in and year out. In his tenure, Poole has led the Seminoles to nine consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, making FSU one of only 12 programs in the nation to accomplish the feat. The team has been ranked in the AVCA Top-15 at some point over the last nine seasons, and has defeated 26 AVCA Top-25 programs since his arrival. Since the beginning of the 2009 season, when Poole began overseeing the scheduling process, the Seminoles have gone head-to-head with 16 different non-conference opponents that were ranked in the top 25 of the AVCA polls in the regular season. Since his arrival at FSU, the Seminoles have seen 45 contests against Top-25 teams. By facing those upper echelon programs, Poole has established Florida State s schedule as one of the most difficult in the nation for the last seven years. Poole has led the Seminoles to three ACC Championships and four conference runner-up finishes. FSU has now made two NCAA Tournament Second Round appearances, and has made it to the Sweet Sixteen three times, as well as one visit to the Elite Eight and one Final Four finish. For his squad s multiple successes, Poole garnered ACC Coach of the Year and AVCA Division I East Region Coach of the Year honors in both 2009 and Poole has coached 15 different All-Americans, with 21 honors since Brianna Barry became the first Seminole to ever be named the ACC s Player of the Year and she also garnered AVCA Division I Second-Team All-American honors. Ashley Neff became the second to earn the ACC Player of the Year recognition, while Taryn Knuth became Poole s first ACC Freshman of the Year and AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year in A native of Heber Springs in north-central Arkansas, Poole is a 1983 graduate of Arkansas Tech and earned a master s degree from there in He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and has served on the AVCA s All-American, All-South Region and All-South Region Ranking committees and is also an AVCA Top 25 voter.
