This is the second match of a home-and-home scheduled last season after both teams saw cancellations due to Hurricane Irma. It s the fourth time the teams will meet under head coaches Chris Poole and Rick Nold after a home-and home in 2013 and The Tigers have only beaten the Seminoles once, in Since then, the last four matches in the series have gone to five sets, all of which ended in FSU s favor. Auburn is the second SEC team Poole scheduled for the team s non-conference slate this year, as the Seminoles hosted No. 11 Florida earlier this week. Sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth s 1.39 blocks per set ranks 30 th nationally and 3 rd in the ACC, while her 46 total blocks ranks 38 th and 2 nd, respectively. Junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey s 4.24 kills per set ranks 39 th nationally and 2 nd in the ACC. FSU will see three AVCA Top-25 programs in their non-conference schedule this season. 5 MATCH #10: AUBURN SCOUTING THE TIGERS Auburn has seen a number of tough opponents so far this season, as the Tigers hosted Michigan in August (currently ranked No. 19) and saw Loyola Marymount in Kansas, falling to both in straight-sets. Of the team s six wins this season, the Tigers have swept their opponent four times and won in five sets to Kansas and, most recently, Kennesaw State. The Tigers have started three freshmen so far this season, led by the team s primary setter, Mica Allison. Auburn has been led in the front row by both freshman Taylor Rowland and senior Brenna McIlroy, who have each tallied 94 kills so far this season. Rowland leads with 3.48 kills per set, good for a.234 hitting percentage. Returning starter Gwyn Jones leads the offense in efficiency, hitting.300 this season with 69 kills on 170 attacks. The offense has been supported by freshman setter Mica Allison, who has accumulated 317 total assists this season. Her 9.91 assists per set ranks 81 st nationally and 6 th in the SEC. Freshman Bella Rosenthall has been holding down the back row and acting as one of the team s primary service receivers this season, and leads the team with 127 digs (3.97 per set). FSU VS. 6 SEASON AT A GLANCE FSU PICKED THIRD IN ACC: Florida State was tabbed to finish third in the conference this season after finishing in a tie for fifth in The Seminoles placed two on the All-ACC Team, sophomore middle blocker Taryn Knuth and junior outside hitter Payton Caffrey. TOP-10 OPENING WEEKEND: The Seminoles took on No. 4 Minnesota and No. 9 Wisconsin in opening weekend at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. FSU fell to both teams at the Target Center on Friday and Sunday, but took the first set from the Badgers. Four Seminoles recorded a double-double over the weekend, including redshirt freshman Adrian Ell in her first career appearance, newcomer Payton Caffrey, and returning starters Brianne Burkert and Christina Ambrose. COLORADO STATE TOURNAMENT: In the team s second non-conference tournament of the season, FSU went 1-3 in Fort Collins, Colo., defeating TCU in three sets and falling to No. 25 Colorado State and Cincinnati in five. The team hit.318 over the three matches and doubled their opponents blocks with 36 total (six solo). Payton Caffrey was named to the All-Tournament team after earning 54 kills (4.15 per set) on 127 total attacks, good for a.315 hitting percentage. SEMINOLE INVITATIONAL: FSU returned home after a rigorous road schedule in the beginning of its non-conference season to host VCU, Southern Miss and Florida A&M in the Home2 Suites by Hilton Tallahassee Seminole Invitational. Florida State swept VCU and USM in Tully Gym to open its home slate, and swept the Rattlers on their home court across town to win the tournament. Payton Caffrey, Christina Ambrose and Ashley Murray were named to the All-Tournament Team. Caffrey led the tournament in kills and kills per set, while Murray led the All-Tournament Team in hitting percentage. FSU s.475 team attack percentage against VCU is the second-highest an ACC team has seen in a match this season. Ashley Murray s.833 attack percentage against Florida A&M is the second-highest an ACC player has seen in any match this season. FRESH FROM FLORIDA SUNSHINE SHOWDOWN: The Seminoles hosted No. 11 Florida in the latest installment of the in-state rivalry series. HOSPITALITY Ranked second on the team with 107 kills, 3.24 kills per set and 271 total attacks this season. Saw a season-best.450 hitting percentage against VCU ( ), and topped it the next day with a.545 percentage at FAMU ( ); Home2 Suites All-Tournament Team. The only Seminole to earn double-digit kills against No. 4 Minnesota and No. 9 Wisconsin; earned her first career double-double against the Badgers (16 kills, 14 digs). 11 // ASHLEY MURRAY REDSHIRT SENIOR 6 2 MIDDLE BLOCKER LOS ANGELES, CALIF. INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS Transferred to FSU from Long Beach State for her redshirt senior season; All-Big West First Team (2016), Big West Freshman of the Year (2014). Ranked 2 nd on the team with 30 total blocks (four solo). Her 9 blocks against TCU is tied for the most in a single match in the ACC this season. Home2 Suites All-Tournament Team; led all players in the tournament in hitting percentage (.533 over three matches). Her 9 solo blocks, 37 assisted blocks, 46 total blocks and 1.39 blocks per set all lead the Seminoles this season. Her.355 hitting percentage ranks second and her 72 kills, 2.18 kills per set, and 152 total attacks all rank third on the team. 15 // PAYTON CAFFREY JUNIOR 6 0 OUTSIDE HITTER CHULUOTA, FLA EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY Preseason All-ACC selection; Colorado State All-Tournament Team Leads the Seminoles in three major statistical categories: kills (127), kills/set (4.38), and total attacks (297). Hit her 1,000 career kill against Colorado State on Sept. 1 and led both teams with 27 kills and 62 total attacks, all on her 20 th birthday. Caffrey comes to FSU from West Virginia, where she was a First Team All-Big 12 selection in 2017 and the AVCA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year in L 20 // KELSEY WICINSKI SENIOR 5 10 LIBERO GENEVA, ILLINOIS SOCIAL SCIENCE After playing for two years at Maryland, Wicinski sat out for half of her junior season before transfering to FSU for her senior year. Leads the Seminoles with 121 digs so far this season (3.67 per set). Saw her first 20-dig outing of the season against Cincinnati (9/2). Brings Big Ten experience to FSU, and has helped the team prepare for opening weekend at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. FIRST OFF THE BENCH: #5 Annie Tietjens (R-Jr S St. Louis, Mo. Psychology) Recorded 2 assists and 2 digs against No. 9 Wisconsin; ranked second on the team last season with 225 assists and 3.21 assists per set. #17 Adrian Ell (R-Fr. 11 50 YEARS OF WOMEN S INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS: Florida State celebrates the 50th year of women s intercollegiate athletics in the season. Volleyball was the first varsity women s sport at FSU, as the program started in The Seminoles will celebrate the milestone with a series of celebrations and reunions, and will promote the campaign on social media using #GarnetandGolden. DOMINANT DECADE: FSU is one of only 12 programs in the country to make the last nine NCAA Tournaments (along with Colorado State, Florida, Hawaii*, Iowa State, Kentucky, Nebraska*, Penn State*, Stanford*, Texas*, USC* and Washington*). The Seminoles have also been ranked in the AVCA Top 15 at some point for the last nine seasons, all under Coach Poole. *National Champions WARRIOR ON: The team s motto and theme for the 2018 season is Warrior On, a nod to the personal mantra of sophomore Taryn Knuth s mother, who gifted tokens with the phrase to every member of the team prior to the season. The team has discussed what the phrase means to each of them individually, and it is a mindset that is kept as a reminder to push through whatever challenges and obstacles they may face throughout the season. Four different players earned a double-double in the team s opening weekend at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, including returners BRIANNE BURKERT and CHRISTINA AMBROSE, and newcomers PAYTON CAFFREY and ADRIAN ELL. Ell recorded the stat in her first ever collegiate match. PAYTON CAFFREY made her first appearance as a Seminole in the Big Ten/ ACC Challenge on August 24-25, leading the team in five different statistical categories in Saturday night s match against No. 9 Wisconsin with 19 kills, 53 attacks, 2 aces, 20 digs and 22 total points earned. On her 20th birthday (Sept. 1), PAYTON CAFFREY hit her 1,000 th career kill and finished the match against Colorado State leading both teams with 27 kills and 62 attacks. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the Colorado State Tournament, finishing the weekend with 54 kills, on 127 attempts (4.15 per set). Returning for her redshirt freshman season, ADRIAN ELL will support the offense as a setter this year. In her first appearance as a Seminole, Ell recorded a double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs against No. 4 Minnesota. Ell battled Hodgkin s Lymphoma in high school, which forced her to sit out her junior year. She returned to her club team at the end of the 2016 season to help them capture the USAV 17 National Championship. Last season, BRIANNE BURKERT became the first Seminole since Cassie McLaughlin (2003) to earn a triple double, and the first to earn multiple in a season or career since Vicki Zinkil earned two in She is also the first to ever record multiple kill-assist-dig triple-doubles. At the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Knuth led the team in attack percentage against No. 9 Wisconsin (.312) and had the second-best percentage among both teams. Last season she led the conference and was ranked 11th nationally in blocks per set with Knuth earned Preseason All-ACC honors for the season. Redshirt senior transfer ASHLEY MURRAY comes to FSU from Long Beach State for the 2018 season. Murray s father is Lamond Murray Sr., a former professional basketball player, and her mother is Carmen Murray, a music producer and founder and CEO of Title 9 Productions. Contests with AVCA Top-25 teams since he started overseeing scheduling in AVCA TOP-25 WINS UNDER COACH POOLE Match 10 // auburn Entering his eleventh year at Florida State, head coach Chris Poole has established the Seminoles as fixture in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 and among the elite programs in the nation, as he has rejuvenated a program that has proven itself as a national contender year in and year out. In his tenure, Poole has led the Seminoles to nine consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, making FSU one of only 12 programs in the nation to accomplish the feat. The team has been ranked in the AVCA Top-15 at some point over the last nine seasons, and has defeated 26 AVCA Top-25 programs since his arrival. Since the beginning of the 2009 season, when Poole began overseeing the scheduling process, the Seminoles have gone head-to-head with 16 different non-conference opponents that were ranked in the top 25 of the AVCA polls in the regular season. Since his arrival at FSU, the Seminoles have seen 45 contests against Top-25 teams. By facing those upper echelon programs, Poole has established Florida State s schedule as one of the most difficult in the nation for the last seven years. Poole has led the Seminoles to three ACC Championships and four conference runner-up finishes. FSU has now made two NCAA Tournament Second Round appearances, and has made it to the Sweet Sixteen three times, as well as one visit to the Elite Eight and one Final Four finish. For his squad s multiple successes, Poole garnered ACC Coach of the Year and AVCA Division I East Region Coach of the Year honors in both 2009 and Poole has coached 15 different All-Americans, with 21 honors since Brianna Barry became the first Seminole to ever be named the ACC s Player of the Year and she also garnered AVCA Division I Second-Team All-American honors. Ashley Neff became the second to earn the ACC Player of the Year recognition, while Taryn Knuth became Poole s first ACC Freshman of the Year and AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year in A native of Heber Springs in north-central Arkansas, Poole is a 1983 graduate of Arkansas Tech and earned a master s degree from there in He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and has served on the AVCA s All-American, All-South Region and All-South Region Ranking committees and is also an AVCA Top 25 voter. Poole and his wife, Toni, a former Arkansas State track and field standout, have two children, son Joshua, a Florida State graduate, and daughter Taylor.
