They are 7-0 in neutral site matches. Cal Poly has won its last 21 matches, which is the longest in program history and the second longest in Division I. The Mustangs have a RPI ranking of 16. Leading the team are Torrey Van Winden (441 kills, 4.69 k/s), Taylor Nelson (1119 assists, a/s), Savannah Niemen (58 total blocks, three solo and 55 assisted), Katherine Brouker (371 digs, 3.95 d/s) and Adlee Van Winden (28 service aces). As a team, the Mustangs have 1422 kills, 1324 assists, 136 service aces, 1402 digs, 181 total blocks (40 solo, 282 assisted), and is hitting.314 while holding opponents to.185. GAMEDAY STORYLINES This is the fourth consecutive year that DU earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Denver has won its last 11 matches. Six of DU s wins have come in straight-sets. The Pioneers are 12-3 in three set matches, 9-2 in four sets and 2-0 in five sets this season. DU is 54th in the RPI rankings, the highest end-of-season RPI in program history. Denver has used three different starting lineups this season. Emma Willis, Cassie Baird, Tina Boe and Cassidy Rooke have started all 28 matches. Teal Schnurr has started 25 matches, Kayla Principato and Piyusha Boteju have both started 17 matches, Becca Latham started 14, and Ellie Anderson has started the last 11 matches. Anderson, Baird, Boe, Latham, Rooke, Schnurr and Willis started the last 11 matches. Latham started the first three matches of the season and the last 11 matches, with the Pioneers going 14-0 in those matches and outscoring the opponents 42 sets to eight. DU is 17-1 when Latham records double-digit kills, 11-0 when Boteju records a double-double and 6-0 when Anderson records a double-double. THE COMEBACK KIDS There have been 10 instances so far this season in which the Pioneers came back in a set, and won in all but two of them. Facing set point at in the second set against the College of Charleston, the Pioneers rallied to score the next four points to win the set 26-24, behind kills from Kayla Principato, Becca Latham and Teal Schnurr. In the third set against Charleston, DU was down before they strung together five-straight points to close out the set Tina Boe, Latham (2) and Schnurr led the charge with kills down the stretch. In the third set against UC Davis, the Pioneers were down 22-19, but went on a 7-2 run to close the set and win Denver showed its resiliency in the second set against No. 5 Texas, going on a 10-3 run to go from down to tying the set at 21. There were two more ties at 22 and 23 before Texas closed out the set with the final two points. Down in the third set against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Pioneers rallied behind back-to-back kills from Boe, three kills from Latham, two errors by the Islanders, and a service ace by Schnurr to take the set DU closed the set on an 8-1 run to go up 2-1 in the match. In the fourth set against the Islanders, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went on a 5-0 run to take a lead, and would push the lead to The lead would fluctuate between two and three points, reaching Texas A&M- Corpus Christi, before Denver went on a 2-0 run tie the set at 23. From there, it was an exchange of points, with ties at 24, 25 and 26 before a service error by the Islanders and a kill by Lydia Bartalo gave the Pioneers the set at and the match at 3-1. In the fourth set against San Diego State, DU used a 6-0 run to tie the set at 19, and would fight off one match point by the Aztecs before ultimately falling Down in the first set against NDSU, DU fought off four set points and used a 5-0 run to take a lead. After ties at 25 and 26, a Schnurr kill and Anderson service ace completed the comeback to take the set, In the third set against Omaha, the Pioneers stormed back to take the set Omaha scored the first four points of the set, and the lead would grow to 9-3. The Pioneers chipped away at the lead and cut it down to four at 13-9, before the lead would get back up to six at The lead stretched to 19-12, but Denver answered with a 5-1 run to cut the lead to 20-17, and then cut it down to one at The Pioneers then took a lead and after a tie at 23, scored the last two points of the set to take the set, After Denver was down seven points at 19-12, they closed on a 13-4 run. In the fourth set of the match against the Mavericks, Denver fell behind early as Omaha jumped out to a 7-4 lead and would grow the lead to Out of a Denver timeout, the Pioneers went on a 4-0 run to make it 10-8 and had another 3-0 run to tie the set at 12. Omaha then went ahead 15-12, to which Denver answered with a 4-1 run to tie the set again at 16. After another tie at 18, the Pioneers went on a 6-0 run that took a tied set at 18 to Denver. The Pioneers had match point at 24-21, but the Mavericks fought back to tie the set at 24, and would take a lead on the following point. Facing set point themselves, Latham got her 17th kill of the match to tie the set at 25. 5 2017 NOTES KILLING IT DU has a balanced attack with six players with over 100 kills, with Latham and Principato leading the team with 317 and 271, respectively. Baird has the thirdmost kills with 204, Willis has 181 and Schnurr has 173, and Boe sits at 128. Denver had four players with 10-plus kills against USC Upstate with Latham (14), Principato (12), Bartalo (10) and Schnurr (10). Against UC Davis, DU had three players with 10 kills by Baird, Principato and Latham. Against Gonzaga, DU had three players with 12 kills by Principato, 11 by Latham and 10 by Baird. In the first league match against Fort Wayne, Principato and Willis had 14 kills and Latham had 12. In the Oct. 21 match, also against Fort Wayne, Principato had 13 kills, Schnurr had a career-high 12 and Latham and Willis each had 11. On Nov. 5 against Omaha, DU had three players in double-digits, with Latham having 13 kills, Principato 12 and Schnurr 11. In the match at WIU, Denver again had three players with double-digit kills (Latham had 16, Baird had 12 and Principato had 10). In the Summit League Tournament final, Willis had 15 kills, Principato had 12 and Baird had 11. Latham had a career-high 20 kills in the semifinal win against North Dakota State and Willis had a career-high 15 kills in the finals win against Oral Roberts. The Pioneers have 1382 kills with a league-high hitting percentage of.253. WE LL HAVE THE DOUBLE-DOUBLE PLEASE Piyusha Boteju has had 11 double-doubles this season. Boteju had 29 assists and 10 digs against USC Upstate, and then had 28 assists and 11 digs later in the day against the College of Charleston. Boteju added another double-double against Niagara with 19 assists and 20 digs (a career-high). Against Texas A&M- Corpus Christi, Boteju had 20 assists, 11 digs, and against Eastern Illinois she had 18 assists and 12 digs. In the match against Omaha the senior had 11 assists and 13 digs. Against South Dakota, Boteju had 10 assists and 11 digs, and against Fort Wayne, she had 23 assists and 10 digs. In the last two regular season matches she had 26 assists and 11 digs against WIU and 23 assists and 23 digs versus USD. In the last match, against ORU, she had 21 assists and 11 digs. The Pioneers are 11-0 when Boteju records a double-double. Cassie Baird had 10 kills and 10 digs against Charleston, 10 kills and 11 digs versus UC Davis, as well as a double-double against Gonzaga with 10 kills and 10 digs. In the match at ORU, she led the team with 10 kills and 11 digs. She has seven in her career. Lydia Bartalo had 10 kills and 12 digs in her second match as a Pioneer against USC Upstate. Ellie Anderson (22 assists, 10 digs) recorded her first double-double as a Pioneer against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. At Fort Wayne, she had a careerhigh 28 assists and 10 digs, and against NDSU, she had 23 assists and 13 digs. In the last two regular season matches, she had 27 assists and 10 digs against WIU and 21 assists and 17 digs against USD. In the Summit League seminfinals against NDSU, she had 26 assists and 15 digs for her third-straight double-double. DU is 6-0 when Anderson records a double-double. BLOCK IT UP Through the regular season matches, Emma Willis leads the Summit League in total blocks (114), assisted blocks (105), and blocks per set (1.15). In league matches, she was second in assisted blocks (49), fourth in total blocks (53), and fifth in blocks per set (1.04). Tina Boe is seventh in total blocks in the Summit League, with 94 total blocks (six solo, 88 assisted), sixth in blocks per set (.97) and fifth in assisted blocks. DU has total blocks (2.32 blocks/ set), off of 32 solo blocks and 396 assisted. Willis had a season-high 10 assisted blocks in the win against Eastern Illinois, and Boe had 10 total blocks against San Diego State (two solo, eight assisted). 6 2017 NOTES THE HONOR IS ALL OURS Principato was named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 28 for her performance in Charleston. Latham was named Summit League Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 16 for her performances against Western Illinois and South Dakota, and again on Oct. 30 for her play against NDSU and SDSU. Latham was named the Pioneer Classic MVP, and Boteju and Boe were named to the All-Tournament Team. Latham was named to the All-Tournament team at the American Campus Classic after having 29 kills in the three matches. Principato and Latham were both named to the Denver Invitational All-Tournament Team. The Pioneers earned a league-high eight Summit League honors. Junior outside hitter Becca Latham, senior right-side hitter Kayla Principato and junior middle blocker Emma Willis were named to the 2017 Summit League All-League Team, while seniors Cassie Baird and Cassidy Rooke earned honorable mention. Middle blocker Tina Boe and setter Ellie Anderson were recognized on the all-freshman team. Head coach Tom Hogan was named Coach of the Year after guiding the Pioneers to a program-best 12-2 league record. Through his two years at the helm, Hogan has compiled a 25-5 (.833) record in the Summit League, with the Pioneers winning the last two regular season titles, as well as the 2016 Summit League Tournament Championship. Kayla Principato was named Summit League Tournament MVP, and Emma Willis, Becca Latham, and Principato earned spots on The Summit League All-Tournament Team. FEARLESS FRESHMEN In their first season as DU Pioneers, the freshmen have made an immediate impact. Anderson is second on the team in assists (487) and service aces (24), and fourth in digs (183). Macy Carrabine is fifth on the team in digs with 143 and assists (28), Boe is second on the team in total blocks at 88 (six solo, 82 assisted) and in hitting percentage (.308). LEAD THE WAY Along with Latham (kills) and Willis (total blocks), Boteju leads the team in assists (521), Cassidy Rooke leads the team in digs (364), and Latham in points scored (343.5). Cassie Baird leads the Pioneers with 32 service aces. REACHING NEW LEVELS Denver s 6-0 start was the best start in program history, surpassing the 5-0 start in Through Sept. 5, the Pioneers were only one of 29 undefeated teams. Boteju recorded her 500th career dig and Latham registered her 400th career kill in the match against Niagara. Baird registered her 500th career kill in the first set against Texas. Emma Willis recorded her 200th total block against UC Riverside. Principato recorded her 800th career kill in the second set of the match against UC Riverside. Boteju recorded her 1500th career assist in the fourth set against Fort Wayne. Rooke moved into fourth all-time in school history in digs and Latham recorded the 500th kill of her career against North Dakota State. In the next match against Omaha, Rooke moved into third-place behind 21 digs with a total of Principato recorded the 1000th point of her career against Omaha. Baird tallied her 500th career dig against Omaha. Rooke recorded the 100th service ace of her career against South Dakota State on Oct. 27. Rooke joined the top 10 ranking in school history in overall sets played (440) against Omaha on Nov. 5. Denver played a No. 1 ranked team for the first time in school history when it faced Minnesota. PRESEASON POLL The Pioneers were picked as the Summit League favorites in the preseason poll. DU received the top spot for the fourth year in a row. They received five out of the eight first-place votes, earning 47 total points. SUSTAINED SUCCESS Denver is coming off of its fourth-straight Summit League regular season and tournament championships. DU has made the NCAA Tournament the last four years after winning the Summit League Tournament. CONSISTENCY IS KEY The Pioneers won over 20 matches each of the last four seasons, and 13 league matches the previous three seasons. The Pioneers have earned the regular season title with a 13-3 Summit League record the past three seasons, and a 12-2 record this year. In each of the last three years, the Pioneers have gone 8-0 at home and 5-3 on the road in league play. This season, DU went 7-0 at home and 5-2 on the road in the Summit League. Denver is (.805) overall in the Summit League. PLAYERS TO WATCH Junior outside hitter Becca Latham was named as Players to Watch in the Summit League Preseason Poll. Coming into the match, Latham has played 98 sets, registering 317 kills (3.23 k/s), hitting.353, and scored 353 points for the Pioneers (3.60 per set). Nationally, she ranks 56th in attack percentage. Through the Nov. 19 matches, the Austin, Texas, native leads the Summit League in hitting percentage, and fourth in kills and points and fifth in kills per set and points per set. When just taking into account league play, she was first in hitting percentage (.363), third in points per set (3.70), fourth in points (185.0), kills (163) and kills per set (3.26). She was also 10th in total blocks (39). FAMILIAR SPACES Denver owns a (.872) home record in Hamilton Gymnasium over the past six seasons, including a perfect 18-0 in Over the last four years, DU has gone undefeated at home in league play, with a 31-0 record. Head Coach! - NCAA DU HEAD COACH Tom Hogan joined the Pioneers coaching staff as the first assistant in the summer of 2012 for head coach Jesse Mahoney and was named the associate head coach after the 2014 season. Ahead of the 2016 season, Hogan was named the seventh head coach in DU volleyball history. In their first season under the direction of Hogan, the Pioneers won their third straight Summit League Regular Season and Tournament Championships behind a 23-win season en route to their third-consecutive NCAA Tournament berth, taking on Stanford. Denver lost to the Cardinal in three sets to conclude the 2016 campaign with a 23-8 record, the second time in school history DU had finished three straight seasons with at least 20 wins ( , 21, 21) along with top-five school finishes in the Division-I era in attack percentage (3rd -.264) and opponent attack percentage (4th -.171). DU s 2016 season included its first win over a ranked opponent in five years as the Crimson and Gold defeated [20] Loyola Marymount in four sets during the Pioneer Classic, a feat last accomplished in 2011 when the Pioneers won out in four sets over [19] Colorado State. Denver has been easily favored on its home court under Hogan, amassing a record at Hamilton Gymnasium since 2012, including a 45-2 record from that featured 31-straight unbeaten matches from Sept, 19, 2014, to Sept. 3, In Summit League play, the Pioneers have not dropped a home match in three seasons with the last loss coming on Nov. 1, Consistently one of the most efficient teams in the nations, Denver finished in the top-50 in both offense and defensive efficiency in the NCAA, ending as the 23rd-best offense and 35th-best defense while leading the Summit League in blocks with at 2.44 per set. In 2015, Denver capped off its second 27-win season with its second straight trip to the NCAA tournament, finishing 27-8 on the season. The Pioneers faced No. 5 seed Washington after winning The Summit League Championship and earning The Summit League regular season title with a 13-3 record. The Pioneers wrapped up the 2014 season with the program s best record in history (27-7, 13-3 Summit) and Summit League regular season and tournament titles. The team also made its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history at Moby Arena in Fort Collins, Colo. As the offensive coordinator at DU, Hogan has helped the team has achieve success, becoming one of the most efficient offenses in the country. The Pioneers recorded.245,.266,.266 and.257 offense efficiencies in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015, respectively, ranking 44th, 20th, 19th and 30th in the country. Hogan is also the recruiting coordinator for DU. Denver s 2014 recruiting class was ranked 28th by PrepVolleyball.com, the first top-30 recruiting class in program history. Hogan brings a wealth of coaching experience to Denver, including an Olympic silver medal. He was a member of the coaching staff of the USA Women s National Volleyball Team from During this time, Hogan helped the team win the silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, the first time USA competed in the gold medal game since Among many others, he coached former AVCA All-Americans and three-time Olympians Stacy Sykora and Robyn Ah Mow-Santos. In 2005, Hogan helped Team USA earn gold at the 2005 NORCECA Championships and silver at the World Grand Champions Cup. In September of 2007, he was named the U.S. Olympic Committee Coach of the Month after help resurrecting Team USA from a disappointing 2006 season saw Team USA bounce back to a record en route to earning 2008 Olympic Games qualification at the FIVB World Cup. Hogan was also head coach of Team USA during the 2008 Pan American Cup in Mexico, helping the U.S. receive a berth in the 2009 FIVB World Grand Prix and a fifth-place finish with a youthful team. In 2014 and 2015, Hogan served as the head coach of the USA Junior National Team. The U.S. won the Global Challenge tournament in 2015, overcoming Italy in the finals in five sets. In 2014, the team won the gold medal in the NORCECA U20 Tournament, defeating the Dominican Republic in the semifinals 3-0 and Cuba in the finals 3-0. The team also qualified for the Junior World Championships. Beginning in 2011, Hogan also began as head coach of the U.S. Girls Select A1 and A2 Volleyball Programs. The USA Select National Team, also headed by Hogan, earned a silver medal at the 2013 USA High Performance Championships and a bronze medal in Hogan served as an assistant coach with the USA Junior National Team in 2004, and was a member of the 2005 Junior National Team that won the gold medal at the NORCECA Championships. He also gained valuable experience working with the USA Youth National A2 Team. Hogan began his USA Volleyball coaching career in 2003 as an apprentice coach working with the USA National Team, the USA National Training Team and the USA Youth National Team. His USA High Performance Pipeline coaching experience includes USA National Team, National A2, JNT, JNTA2, YNT, YNTA2, Select A1 and Select A2. Hogan also holds overseas professional-level coaching experience, having spent a season as assistant coach for the Volero Zurich team, member of the Swiss Women s Professional League competing in the European Cup and Champions League. Batten led the Pioneer defense to a conference best digs-per-set average with libero Kate Acker earning All-Summit League honors. In 2013 Batten and the Pioneers matched their 2012 win total finishing second in Summit League regular season play. During the 2013 conference tournament, the Pioneers came from two-sets down to beat South Dakota in the Summit League Semifinals to advance to the program s first ever league final. Denver narrowly missed a bid to the NCAA tournament after falling to IUPUI in the conference tournament championship match. In their senior campaigns, Brea Muhle and Colleen King both earned All-Summit League, AVCA All-Region, and AVCA Honorable Mention All-America honors. Muhle also finished the season ranked 6th in the NCAA in Hitting Percentage. In her first season as assistant, Batten helped Denver to a overall record and a 10-8 mark in the Pioneers one and only season in the Western Athletic Conference. She worked closely with the Pioneers libero corps of Kate Acker, Sammy Berger and Kelly Morton, guiding them to a 14.7 digs per set average. Batten also works heavily within the USA Volleyball High Performance Pipeline. Most recently, Batten led the USA Youth A1 White to a silver medal in the women s international division at the High Performance Championships. She also helped train the youth national team before the World Championships. In 2015 Batten served as an assistant coach on the Youth A1 Red Team at the USA High Performance Championships, winning a bronze medal in the International Women s division. In 2014 she assisted in training the USA Junior National and Youth National Teams before the NORCECA championships in which a gold and silver medal were won respectively. She also served as a coach during the 2013 and 2014 USA HP Holiday Camps and was the featured coach in USA Volleyball s March 2014 blog. Batten came to DU with a wealth of playing experience after playing four years at Colorado State University. She was also mentored by some of the greatest figures in club and youth volleyball. Prior to joining DU, Batten was an assistant to former Ohio State head coach, Jim Stone at Front Range Volleyball Club. She also served as an assistant with the Norco Volleyball Club under former University of Nebraska head coach, Terry Pettit. At CSU, she earned Mountain West Conference Libero of the Year honors in 2009, along with AVCA All-America and AVCA All-Region recognition. She currently holds the MWC record and CSU record for all-time career digs and helped CSU earn NCAA Tournament appearances in all four years including a Sweet Sixteen appearance in She graduated with a bachelor of arts in journalism and technical communication from Colorado State University in 2010 and an M.S. in organizational leadership from Denver in Batten resides in Denver Denver Volleyball DenverPioneers.com 11

12 2017 COACHING STAFF Alma Mater: UCLA Experience: Second Season Assistant Coach Jesse Tupac Tupac joined the Pioneers coaching staff as the second assistant and offensive coordinator before the 2016 season. He will also assist in evaluating and recruiting future prospects. In 2016, Tupac guided Denver s offense to a.264 hitting efficiency and finished as the 23rd-best offense in the NCAA behind kills and assists. DU routinely hit over.300 in matches as a team, accomplishing the feat 11 times, with a season-best.476 coming on Sept. 11 against NJIT in a three-set sweep. World Championship Qualifiers. He served as the technical coordinator for the women s volleyball indoor youth national squad and worked for the gold medal-winning women s indoor national team. Tupac previously served as a graduate assistant at Iowa State and volunteer assistant at Loyola Marymount (Calif.). At Iowa State, the Cyclones advanced to the second round of the 2014 NCAA Tournament and finished ranked second in the Big 12. Tupac assisted LMU with training, video coordinating, data analysis and the compilation of scouting reports for the 2013 season. Tupac has been honored for his work in volleyball as a recipient of the 2015 AVCA 30 Under 30 awards, which recognizes 30 up-and-coming volleyball coaches under 30 years old at all levels of the game. Tupac brings experience from the college, international and club levels, most recently as the director of volleyball operations at Penn State. Penn State made a sweet sixteen appearance and finished with a 28-6 record during Tupac s season with the Nittany Lions. Internationally, Tupac has worked with USA Volleyball in various positions, as well as with the Australian national team. Most recently, he served as an assistant coach for the Australian women s national team at the World Grand Prix. There, the Aussies beat Trinidad and Tobago in straight sets for the first World Grand Prix victory in Australia s history and their first FIVB win since the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. He was an assistant coach for the USA Volleyball women s indoor national team at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, where the US won gold for the first time since In 2014, Tupac worked with both the US junior and senior teams at the NORECECA Volunteer Assistant Coach Nate Ngo Alma Mater: University of Nebraska (M.S.), Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Experience: First Season At the club level, Tupac has served as a coach and administrator for the All Iowa Attack Volleyball Club and Sunshine Volleyball Club. As the head coach of the All Iowa Attack 18 s Team, the squad finished in first place at both the Iowa Regionals and the Northern Lights USAV Qualifier. In 2014, he coached the 17-Red team to a 17-National gold medal. Tupac also spent seven years with the Sunshine Volleyball Club and guided the South Bay team to a bronze medal at the 18-Nationals. Both clubs experienced great growth during Tupac s time with them; the Sunshine Volleyball Club expanded from 15 teams to 23 teams, while the All Iowa Attack Volleyball Club grew from five to nine teams. In college, Tupac played for coach Al Scates as a member of the UCLA men s volleyball team. He graduated with a bachelor s degree in English and later began pursuing his master s of education at Iowa State. Nate Ngo joined the Pioneers in early October and is primarily responsible for serving, as well as helping assistant coach Katelin Batten with defense. Ngo has an extensive collegiate coaching background, dating back to Most recently, Ngo was an assistant coach for the Irvine Valley College men s and women s teams from Under his coaching there, the women won the 2015 Orange Empire Conference championship. Prior to that, Ngo served as an assistant coach at the University of Portland in 2014, and was a graduate manager at the University of Nebraska from During his time in Lincoln, the Cornhuskers won the Big Ten championship in He served as a student manager in 2006 and was a volunteer assistant coach for Cal Poly from , in which the Mustangs won the 2006 and 2007 Big West championships. While being a volunteer assistant coach in San Luis Obispo, he also spent time as head coach of the Cal Poly Women s Club Volleyball. 13 Director of Volleyball Operations Jessica Aschenbrenner Alma Mater: Colorado Experience: First Season Denver native Jessica Aschenbrenner joined the DU volleyball staff ahead of the 2017 season. At Denver, Aschenbrenner will be responsible for providing administrative, logistical and technical coordination for the volleyball program. Aschenbrenner will manually code statistics for all practices and competitions, while working with the coaching staff to analyze statistics for review with current players and prepare scouting breakdowns of opponents prior to competition. Aschenbrenner comes to Denver after spending the 2016 season as a volunteer assistant for the Colorado Buffaloes. At CU, she was responsible for assisting with on court training and video coordination, recording statistics, scouting opponents, creating social media graphics and maintaining the alumni database and outreach efforts.
