1 2014 Volleyball Notes Week 9 Denver (17-3, IPFW (9-11, 3-3) Friday, Oct. 17, p.m. MT IUPUI (10-11, 4-2) Sunday, Oct. 19, p.m. MT Live Stats: Sidearm Stats Video Stream: IPFW IUPUI THE MATCHUPS About Denver: The Crimson and Gold earned their 14th home court win this past Sunday against the South Dakota Coyotes (previously undefeated in the Summit League). Coming off of a five-set rally that Friday night, the Pioneers proved their capability to quickly recompose and bring their best game. Head coach Jesse Mahoney wasn t thrilled with their efforts on Friday night, but was happy with the team s improvement and mental focus to get the major win on Sunday. With this 12th consecutive win, Denver improved their overall season to 17-3 and their Summit League record to a perfect 6-0. Denver is currently first in the Summit League standings. About IPFW: The Mastodons currently sit at a 9-11 overall record on the season and have a Summit League record of 3-3. Somer Johnson led the team on Tuesday against IUPUI with 17 kills at a.400 hitting percentage. Teammate Emily Spencer was close behind with 16 kills and hit her 41st consecutive match in double-digits. IPFW ultimately fell to IUPUI 3-1. About IUPUI: This Tuesday, for the first time since their 2008 season, the IUPUI volleyball team earned a road win against Summit League rival Fort Wayne. The Jags now rank on the season and have a Summit League record of 4-2. Our defense really stepped up to outblock IPFW... It was a very good team effort and win tonight, head coach Steve Payne noted. NOTES On Friday night, the Pioneers will face their seventh Summit League opponent of the season, IPFW, in the Gates Sports Center. The match will begin at 9 p.m. MT and stats will be live streamed via Sidearmstats.com/ ipfw/wvball/. Fans may also view a live video stream at gomastodons.com/ watch/. 3 SETTING HER SIGHTS Bailey Karst has been one of Denver s most important assets on the court for defense. The senior was named the Summit League s Volleyball Offensive Player of the Week prior to conference play, after guiding the Pioneers to an undefeated week (4-0), capturing the Denver Invitational title and earning an all-tournament team selection. The Aurora, Colorado native has helped Denver record its best start to a season (17-3) since She opened this week with 59 of the Pioneers 64 assists against the South Dakota Coyotes. KILLING THE COMPETITION University of Denver sophomore Moni Corrujedo has been climbing the Summit League leader polls in recent weeks, now ranking number 7 in kills with a season total of 323, averaging 2.95 per set. She is followed by Nola Basey, who ranks 11th with 265 kills. Basey was the Summit League s Offensive Player of the Week twice in a row last week after recording 25 kills at a.418 hitting percentage in the four-set victory over South Dakota State and chipped in 15 kills in a straight-set win over Omaha. FRESH FACES, FRESH TAKE The Pioneers welcomed six freshmen to the squad this year. Cassie Baird has proven to be a young leader on the team; Thus far, she has had 98 kills on the season, the fifth highest amount on the entire squad. Cassidy Rooke has served as a libero/defensive specialist in 71 of the Pioneers 72 games, and currently ranks fifth on the squad in defense with 124 digs. MAKE IT NATIONAL Coming off a bid for the Conference title, Denver looks to return once again to the postseason, setting its sights toward the elusive NCAA Tournament. State Ass t # - The Summit League! - NCAA Tournament Jesse Mahoney became the sixth head coach in DU volleyball history since the program s inception in In his first season with the Pioneers, Mahoney led the Pioneers to a record, the program s 12th winning season, as well as a 10-8 mark in the Pioneers lone season in the Western Athletic Conference. In 2013, he compiled an identical overall record, with a 10-4 mark in the inaugural Summit League. Despite the transition, Mahoney was able to continue his successful mark on the program, helping Denver to several impressive wins throughout the season. Under his guidance, the Pioneers had two AVCA Honorable Mention All-Americans and a Summit League Freshman of the Year. Denver also finished second in The Summit League standings, 20th in the nation in hitting percentage (.266) and senior Brea Muhle finished fifth in the NCAA with.445. In the classroom, Mahoney helped the Pioneers to the AVCA Team Academic Award, the program s 13th in the last 14 seasons. Prior to coming to Denver, Mahoney spent seven seasons under legendary head coach Assistant Head Coach Tom Hogan Alma Mater: Miami (Ohio) Experience: 3rd Season Tom Hilbert with Colorado State, including four as associate head coach. Mahoney helped the Rams to a (.744) record, seven NCAA Tournament appearances and five Mountain West Conference championships in his seven seasons. Mahoney joined Colorado State from Fort Hays State, where he was the head coach from While at Fort Hays State, Mahoney tallied a record of , including a mark from His Lady Tigers went 31-5 in 2004, as they posted the best record in NCAA Division II competition and finished the season ranked 11th nationally. Prior to his time in Hays, Kans., Mahoney was the assistant coach at Colorado Christian in 1998, helping lead the Cougars to a tie for first place in the RMAC East Division (17-2 record). Mahoney was the head coach of the University of Colorado men s club team for two years and also helped coach the under-18 Front Range Volleyball Club team that captured the USA Junior Rocky Mountain Region championship. Prior to coaching, Mahoney spent four seasons as the starting setter on the CU men s club team. It was a good win for us our first time out, though I wish we had been the Pioneers vault to the top of the Summit League standings. We are excited to Acker and Moni Corrujedo built upon their play from the previous day, helping pushed a little more, head coach Jesse Mahoney said. We were able to get a look at start the season off 3-0 and with a tournament victory, Mahoney said. We had a several different line-ups and players, which was good. Bailey Karst ran a great offense and Kate Acker was a force from the service line. Our matches tomorrow will gutted out a tough five-set win in a pressure-filled environment against UTA. lot of bright spots on the weekend: we rallied from behind in both matches, and we get tougher as we go, and we re looking forward to seeing how this group responds. The Pioneers launched their appearance in the Denver Invitational with a tight win against the Dons. Led by a combined 44 kills from sophomores Ruth Okoye (Aurora, Colo.) and Moni Corrujedo (El Paso, Tex.), the University of Denver volleyball team vanquished San Francisco in five hard-played sets (25-20, 30-28, 24-26, 22-25, 15-12). Coach Mahoney commented of this win, Every set was competitive, it was fun to coach, and win or lose, I would have been happy with this match because we took a step forward tonight.
