The Colorado State athletic media relations office genuinely appreciates your coverage of CSU volleyball, and looks forward to each and every time it can welcome you to Fort Collins. Members of the office, including volleyball contact Nic Hallisey, director Paul Kirk, assistant directors Danielle Marshall and Danny Mattie, media relations assistant Stuart Buchanan, as well as the team of student-assistants, are available to assist with your coverage. The office is happy to help you however it can. We encourage you to familiarize yourself with the policies relevant to your coverage of the volleybal program, as outlined on this page and the next. GENERAL POLICIES All interviews with any member of the volleyball program, including Head Coach Tom Hilbert, the coaching staff and student-athletes must be coordinated through Nic Hallisey in the athletic media relations office. Members of the media are strictly prohibited from approaching any coach, staff member or student-athlete by any means, including text messages, , phone calls (cell, office or home) or social media, such as Facebook and Twitter, without first approaching the athletic media relations office. Regarding unique subject matter, such as human-interest angles, members of the media are welcome to approach the media relations office at least 24 hours in advance with requests to interview any member of the program. Approved requests will be granted. INTERVIEW GUIDELINES Interviews, either in person or via telephone, with members of Colorado State s volleyball coaching staff and student-athletes must be coordinated through media relations assistant Nic Hallisey. Media are asked not to request an individual s personal contact information, including and cell number, but rather to contact Nic Hallisey. Student-athletes and coaches are available for interviews at the conclusion of daily practice sessions. Student-athlete interviews will not conflict with classes, meetings, medical treatment or practice times. Interviews are not permitted in the locker room or training room. Interviews will not be granted on match days until following the contest. Telephone interviews should be requested at least 24 hours in advance and coordinated through Nic Hallisey. All interviews will be processed on an availability basis involving the requested interviewee. MEDIA CREDENTIALS Single-match credentials must be requested through Nic Hallisey in writing at least three days in advance of a match. Approved requests will be mailed or can be picked up in the media relations office or at the match. On days of matches, credentials can be obtained just outside the west side of the Moby Arena court. Media members are asked to enter through the McGraw Athletic Center doors (just east of the Moby Arena parking lot) and follow the ramp on the right down to the court. At the bottom of the ramp, a table will be set up with credentials. PARKING Media parking is available at Moby Arena. Please contact the CSU media relations office to request a Moby Arena parking pass. Access to the parking lot will require an A permit from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. A limited number of single-day passes are available through the media relations office. Annual permits can be purchased through the Office of Parking Management website: PRACTICE GUIDELINES All Colorado State volleyball practices are open to the media and public, unless otherwise noted. During the season, practice will generally run from 12:30-3 p.m. during the week, except on match and travel days. Please note, practice times are subject to change on short or no notice. At times, practice will end early, so please plan to arrive early. Practice will usually take place in Moby Arena, but contact Nic Hallisey for the most updated schedule. All interviews must take place after the conclusion of practice. If this is an issue, contact Nic Hallisey, and the media relations staff will try and accommodate your schedule. Members of the general public attending practice are asked to sit in Moby Arena seating. GAMEDAY Near the end of each home match, the media relations staff will ask those on hand representing the media who they wish to speak with. Approximately 10 minutes after the conclusion of a match, Head Coach Tom Hilbert and the selected student-athletes will be brought to the Coors Auditorium, located in the McGraw Athletic Center, and will be available for questions. No student-athlete or coach can appear on a live postgame television or radio interview without permission obtained prior to the match from Nic Hallisey. GAMEDAY SERVICES A pre-match meal is served 90 minutes prior to first serve in the team room. In-game services include live online statistics, box scores following each set and notes, transcribed quotes and statistics following the conclusion of the match. The media room, which is located just west of the court at the bottom of the ramp connecting Moby Arena and the McGraw Athletic Center, will be open at least two hours prior to the start of a match, and will provide updated notes on both teams, statistics and other information. Moby Arena offers complimentary wireless Internet access. Check the media room for access information. ROAD MATCHES We appreciate your coverage, and if you would like to cover the Rams in person during a road match, please notify Nic Hallisey at least seven days in advance to provide ample time to request a credential from the opposing team. If you would like to talk to Head Coach Tom Hilbert after the conclusion of a road match via telephone, please notify Nic Hallisey prior to the start of the match. After the match, a member of the media relations staff will call you so you can talk with Coach Hilbert. Student-athletes will try to be made available, as well, if requested. REPORTING OF INJURIES At all times throughout the calendar year, Head Coach Tom Hilbert will serve as the sole source for injury information. All questions related to injuries should be directed to Hilbert, and not to any other member of the program, including athletic trainers, doctors, the injured student-athlete or her teammates. 3 2013 MATCH NOTES 3 COLORADO STATE VS. NEW MEXICO THURSDAY, NOV P.M. MT MOBY ARENA COLORADO STATE VS. AIR FORCE FRIDAY, NOV P.M. MT MOBY ARENA VS. VS. SCOUTING NEW MEXICO New Mexico has been consistent this year, and has been rewarded for its effort with a 20-5 record overall. At 10-4 in the Mountain West, the Lobos are tied for second place, trailing just Colorado State. The matchup between the Rams and the Lobos will see the two best offenses and two best defenses square off against each other. CSU ranks first in the conference with a.298 hitting percentage, while New Mexico is first in the MW, limiting its opponents to just a.146 hitting percentage. On the flip side, the Lobos rank second in the MW with a.242 hitting percentage while the Rams limit their opponents to.153 hitting, also second. New Mexico ranks fourth in the league with assists and kills per set. With 2.79 blocks and digs per set, the Lobos rank third in the MW in both categories and will provide CSU with one of the toughest defenses it has faced all season. The Lobos are led by All-MW Preseason Team selection Chantale Riddle. The junior right-side hitter has been a dynamic force for opponents to deal with this season, averaging 4.02 kills, 2.10 digs and 0.99 blocks per set. Riddle is tops in the conference in both kills and points (4.74 per set). In the back row, senior libero Miquella Lovato helps shore up the defense with 4.66 digs per set, second in the MW, while sophomore middle blocker Skye Gullatt paces New Mexico at the net with 1.28 blocks per set, which ranks fourth. SERIES VS. THE LOBOS The Rams lead the overall series against the Lobos, 46-23, and have been especially successful against their Mountain West counterpart at home. When playing at Moby Arena, CSU is 24-8, winning 17 in a row dating back to Under Head Coach Tom Hilbert, the Rams are 31-3 against New Mexico, and while playing as a ranked team, CSU is In a dramatic match earlier this year in Albuquerque, CSU won the first two sets before come from behind to win Set 5, Led by junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider s 18 kills, CSU finished with four players reaching double digits in kills, including sophomore right-side hitter Adrianna Culbert, who posted a double-double with 12 kills and 14 digs. The Rams and Lobos have several notable connections. Over the summer, CSU setter Deedra Foss competed with New Mexico s Hannah Johnson and Riddle with the USA Volleyball A2 Program, while Snider traveled to China with Gullatt, Lexi Ross and Lobos Head Coach Jeff Nelson for the BIP/USA Global Challenge. SCOUTING AIR FORCE The Falcons enter this week s action with a 6-19 record, including 3-10 in Mountain West play. Air Force begins one of its toughest stretches of the season this week, as it begins a five-match road trip. On the road the Falcons are just 1-8 on the year, and are 0-5 in road matches against conference opponents. The Falcons, though, are coming off a four-set win vs. Boise State over the weekend. Air Force features one of the youngest teams in the MW, with just two seniors on the roster. Despite victories against three conference teams, the Falcons rank in the bottom three of the MW in five statistical categories (hitting percentage, assists, kills, blocks and digs), and don t rank higher than seventh in a statistical category. Sophomore outside hitter Akokwe Clement leads the team with 2.86 kills per set, while Maggie Sherrill, Cami Richan and Ayesha Hein also average more than two kills per set. Junior setter Hillary Keltner paces the Falcons offensive attack with 9.84 assists per set, ranking sixth in the MW. THE FALCONS The Rams have enjoyed great success against their intra-state foes to the south, leading the all-time series, After a loss during the series first meeting, in 1982, CSU has rattled off 40 consecutive victories, including a 37-0 mark under Head Coach Tom Hilbert. CSU has swept Air Force in each of the last 18 matches dating back to 2005, and 30 of the last 31. It is believed that CSU s 40-match winning streak against Air Force is the nation s third-longest active win streak against a team. 4 2013 MATCH NOTES 4 STREAKING AT HOME CSU hasn t lost at home in more than a calendar year, winning 19 consecutive contests at Moby Arena. The streak is among the best in program history (fourth), but also ranks third among active streaks in the NCAA. Between September 1998 and November 2000, CSU won an impressive 44 consecutive home contests, a Moby Arena record. Since then, the Rams have pieced together streaks of 21, 20, 19 and 16. HOME COOKING The Rams have had tremendous success at Moby Arena, winning nearly 90 percent of their home matches under Head Coach Tom Hilbert. Since 1997, Hilbert s first season in Fort Collins, CSU has gone (.894) at home. MOBY ARENA THE GREATEST VOLLEYBALL VENUE IN AMERICA Head Coach Tom Hilbert doesn t shy away when talking about Moby Arena, the home court for the Colorado State volleyball program, calling it the greatest volleyball venue in America. It is one of the most distinctive and effective home-court playing facilities in the nation. Thanks to its dedicated fans, Moby Arena is home to crowds and winning percentages matched by few programs across the country. CSU has won 35 of its last 36 home matches, and since the start of the 2011 season, is Only Texas has a better home winning percentage during that span. Including 2013, CSU has won at least 10 home matches each season since 1995, and with an undefeated home record (11-0), the Rams are on pace to have one of their best-ever home winning percentages. CSU currently ranks eighth nationally, averaging 3,153 fans per match, which is on pace to be a program record. The Rams have already attracted five crowds of more than 3,500 this season, including a season-best 4,801 on Oct. 12 vs. Boise State. The figure ranks 10th among CSU s top single-match crowds. CSU has been ranked in the top 25 in average annual attendance each season since the NCAA began calculating attendance figures in 1986, including the top-10 seven times and No. 1 in In 2012, the Rams averaged 2,159 fans per contest, which ranked No. 17 nationally. Just three schools had larger single-match crowds than CSU s attendance of 5,641 on Sept. 15, 2012 vs. UCLA. In all, four of CSU s top-10 singlematch attendance figures have occurred since The Rams set a Mountain West record on Sept. 2, 2011, when 6,750 fans witnessed CSU come from behind to defeat No. 5 Nebraska. At home since 1987, the Rams have defeated nine teams ranked in the top 10, plus more than a dozen additional wins against ranked opponents. During Hilbert s tenure, CSU has hosted 37 nationally ranked teams, coming away with victories in 25 of those contests, including seven of the last nine dating back to CSU s most recent win over a ranked foe at Moby Arena was on Sept. 7, 2012, when the Rams upset No. 12 Pepperdine in straight sets. MOUNTAIN WEST DOMINATION The Rams have dominated the Mountain West since its inception in 1999, going At home, CSU has won 22 straight conference matches, a streak that began during the final regular-season match of the 2010 season. One of the most impressive stats, however, is CSU s home winning streak against current members of the MW, which dates back to Nov. 4, 2005, a span of 48 straight matches. THE BIG STAGE CSU has been an NCAA tournament host in 11 seasons, most recently in Included in that figure is 2008, when CSU was a Regional Finals host. Being selected to play in front of its home crowd is important to CSU; the Rams are 13-2 in NCAA tournament matches at Moby Arena. CSU s come-from-behind win at Utah State (Nov. 2) helped surpass the 2001 squad s 20-0 start. CSU followed its historic win two more victories last week to improve to That s a record that these players deserve all the credit for, Hilbert said after his team came back from an 0-2 deficit at Utah State. They re just good competitors. They have a lot of grit and determination. You can say what you want about our schedule or whatever, but we haven t lost in 21 matches, and we ve been in some pretty precarious situations, and that s pretty neat. I sit back sometimes in awe of this group of players, and the things they continue to do in these tough situations. I don t think this is me as a coach; I think this particular group has character, and just have it. They have a magical way of competing and doing well in end-games. That s just these kids; they re great. In 2001, the Rams suffered their initial defeat on Nov. 3 to No. 15 Utah, and finished the year ranked No. 10 with a 29-4 record. Most Consecutive Wins Wins Year TWENTY-THREE IN A ROW Not only are the Rams off to their best start ever, but the team s 23-match winning streak is tied for CSU s all-time mark, originally established Sept. 20-Dec. 6, With a win Thursday vs. New Mexico, CSU can set a new record, and a win both Thursday and Friday vs. Air Force, the Rams will set a new Mountain West mark. The current record was set by Utah in CSU s 23-match winning streak is the second-longest active streak in the NCAA. Excluding the Rams NCAA tournament loss to No. 22 Purdue last season, they haven t lost a contest since Oct. 25, 2012, a span of 31 consecutive regular-season victories, a program and active NCAA record. ANOTHER MILESTONE VICTORY: NO. 600 Considered one of the most successful volleyball coaches in the nation, Head Coach Tom Hilbert earned yet another milestone victory on Saturday: No Less than a year after celebrating his 400th career win at CSU, Hilbert became the 17th active coach to reach 600 career wins. 6 2013 MATCH NOTES 6 REMAINING UNDEFEATED Entering the 12th week of the season, CSU is one of two Division I teams to have yet to lose a match, joining Missouri. While this is the best start to a season in terms of wins, it is also the longest in terms of date on the calendar. The latest CSU had previously gone without losing a match was Nov. 3, in CSU has never been the only unbeaten team in the NCAA. In 2001, when the Rams were 20-0 in November, Long Beach State was the only other ranked undefeated team. That year, the 49ers went 33-1, with their only loss coming to Stanford in the national championship. In 1999, CSU was one of three ranked unbeaten teams before losing at UNLV on Oct. 16. Hawai i (finished 29-2, Sweet 16) and Northern Iowa (30-1, Sweet 16) were the other undefeated teams at that point. If CSU can win both matches and Fresno State loses, the Rams will win the title outright and advance to their 19th consecutive NCAA tournament. Entering 2013, just three other schools have won their respective conference title in each of the last four seasons (Albany, 5, America East; Dayton, 4, Atlantic 10; and Hawai i, 18, Big West in 1995 and 2012, WAC from ). Of those teams, CSU is the only team currently leading its conference. COLORADO DOMINATION With a win over Northern Colorado on Sept. 3, Head Coach Tom Hilbert improved to 40-0 at home against teams from the Centennial State Air Force, Colorado, Denver and Northern Colorado. The Rams have also beat Denver (Sept. 10, 3-1) and Air Force (Sept. 26, 3-0) this season, with both victories coming on the road. CSU s last home loss to a team from Colorado came in 1995 against the Colorado Buffaloes. In all, CSU has taken 94 of its 114 (.825) all-time matches against teams from its own state, including a 52-5 record (.912) at home. when CSU takes on Air Force. CSU has won 40 straight matches in the series, which is believed to be the third-longest active win streak in a series. The Rams have won 17 consecutive conference home openers, dating back to 1997, Head Coach Tom Hilbert s first at the helm of the Rams. A win Thursday would improve CSU s MW record to 15-0, marking the Rams best-ever conference start. Prior to 2013, CSU has started conference season with 14 straight wins one other time, going 14-0 in The Rams were 10-0 at the midway point of MW season, marking the sixth time in the league s 14-year history that CSU has gone unbeaten in the first half of its MW slate. 20 WINS ONCE AGAIN On Oct. 31 at Boise State, CSU won its 20th match of the season, marking the 19th straight season that the Rams have Consecutive Wins to Begin MW Year Wins reached that mark. Nebraska (38 entering 2013), Penn State (36), Florida (22) and Hawai i (20) are the only teams to have a longer streak than CSU. With CSU s win at Wyoming on Nov. 5, the Rams surpassed their 2012 win total (21-8), with seven regular-season match remaining. RELOADING, NOT REBUILDING The Rams 23-0 start is remarkable, but making it more impressive is how it has happened. Head Coach Tom Hilbert should be the favorite to win his ninth Mountain West Coach-of-the-Year award and in contention for a second AVCA Region Coach-of-the- Year honor in three seasons after transforming the 2013 squad from a rebuilding year to a reloading year. The Rams are on pace for one of their best-ever seasons despite losing much of their production from last year s MW championship team which went CSU lost five players, including four of its starters. All four were All-MW selections during their career and two were AVCA All-Americans. CSU graduated percent of its blocks, including three of the top four blockers. Megan Plourde finished her career as the second-best blocker in program history, and ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA from CSU graduated percent of its offense from a year ago, including the team s top three attackers. CSU graduated percent of its service aces, including the top three averages. CSU graduated percent of its digs, including its starting libero. Of CSU s starters this season, just one was starting in their current position a year ago. NO. 10 IN THE POLL With two wins last week, the Rams remained at No. 10 in this week s AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll. CSU was passed by then-no. 11 Nebraska, but jumped ahead of then-no. 9 Minnesota. The Huskers and Gophers swapped positions after Nebraska beat Minnesota on Sunday in Minneapolis. On Oct. 28, the Rams were selected No. 9 in the nation, marking CSU s first top-10 ranking since the Nov. 29, 2004 poll. We re in this position because we re undefeated, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said after the team s No. 9 ranking. We have to stay humble and go win the next match. There is no selfishness on this team. No one feels like they have to prove something, they just go out and play great volleyball. That s how we need to continue to play. CSU has been ranked more frequently than all but 14 teams in NCAA history, and earned a spot in the top 10 for the 61st total time on Monday, a number that ranks 19th among all programs. All-time, CSU is as a ranked team, including while in the top 10. The Rams highest-ever ranking is No. 3, in CSU began the season receiving 15 points in the preseason poll, good for 38th, but with each victory, continued to climb the rankings, cracking the top 25 for the first time on Sept. 16. The Rams peaked at No. 9 on Oct. 28, but fell to No. 10 the week following after Minnesota jumped CSU following a win over then-no. 16 Purdue. FILLING UP THE GYM Always known as one of the loudest gyms in the entire country, CSU s Moby Arena currently ranks eighth nationally, averaging 3,153 fans per contest. The average is on pace to be the highest in program history. Currently, the program s best attendance average came in 2001, when the Rams averaged 2,846 fans per match. In all, CSU has brought in an average of more than 2,000 fans eight seasons, including each of the last three. CSU set a season high with 4,801 fans on Oct. 12 (3-0 win vs. Boise State) the 10th-largest attendance figure in program history. Following last Saturday s win vs. Nevada, which came in front of 4,418 fans, CSU has posted three 4,000-plus crowds this season, the third time in program history (1987, five; 1988, three). The Rams are one of four teams nationally to rank in the top 10 for both attendance averages and in the AVCA top-25 poll (also Nebraska, Penn State and Texas). ROAD WARRIORS The Rams made history on Oct. 19, defeating San Diego State to win their 12th consecutive true road match, a program record. The streak began on Oct. 27, 2012, at Nevada, and has since increased to 15 consecutive victories. It took the Rams six tries to get their first win away from Moby Arena in 2012, finally posting one at UNLV on Oct. 14, in front of a national TV audience. However, the Rams finished strong, winning their final five down the stretch, and have opened up 2013 with 10 true road wins in 10 tries in addition to two neutral-court wins in Malibu, Calif., which are not included in the true road wins figure. She is the only player to earn the honor twice. Culbert averaged 2.25 kills on.500 hitting in two road wins, in addition to 3.38 digs and 0.88 blocks per set. In a come-from-behind victory at Utah State to set the program record for wins to start a season, Culbert had 12 kills on.522 efficiency. She did not make an error in 23 attacks, and added a career-high-tying 17 digs and a season-best six blocks. It was CSU s first honor since earning the award in three consecutive weeks in September, which marked just the fifth time that a team has earned the award in three straight weeks, most recently occurring in 2008 by CSU.

8 2013 MATCH NOTES 8 In 14 seasons with the Mountain West, CSU has led the charge by a large margin, winning 10 regular-season conference championships in addition to five MW tournament titles in nine seasons. CSU has finished first in the regular-season standings each of the past four years, leading wire-to-wire from , and so far in On Sept. 23, Samantha Peters was named the MW Player of the Week after helping the Rams to a pair of victories on the week, extending CSU s undefeated stretch to 10 matches, one of six undefeated teams in the country at the time. In two three-set wins against Wyoming and SEC power Texas A&M, she averaged 1.83 blocks and 2.83 kills on.412 hitting. She posted 10 kills on.450 hitting against the Cowgirls, who were ranked No. 1 in the country in blocking at the time. Against Texas A&M, she had six stuffs against the nation s 11th-best attacking team at the time. The league named Culbert its Sept. 16 selection after averaging 5.29 kills and 3.00 digs per set on.523 hitting. In a four-set victory at Denver on Sept. 10, she tallied a career-high 23 kills, the most by a MW player this season at the time and most by a CSU athlete since November Her 23 kills came on.512 hitting, as she committed just two errors on 41 swings. In the match, Culbert also led the team in aces (3) and digs (14). The following night, hosting Missouri State, Culbert had a team-high 14 kills on.542 hitting, a career high. One week prior (Sept. 9) Deedra Foss was named the MW Player of the Week after helping the Rams to a 4-0 week, including the Pepperdine Invitational championship. Foss averaged assists, 2.60 digs, 0.67 kills, 0.47 aces and 0.47 blocks per set on the week, earning tournament MVP honors. Against UC Santa Barbara, she tallied a doubledouble with 53 assists, 13 digs, four kills, four blocks and two aces. AMONG THE BEST IN THE NATION As one of the top teams in the country, CSU is also putting up some of the top numbers in the country. The Rams continue to move up in several team and individual categories in the latest NCAA statistical report, released Monday. CSU is one of the most potent offenses in the country, ranking in the top 15 in both kills and hitting percentage. Additionally, the Rams have risen to No. 6 in blocks per set. CSU and Stanford are the only two teams in the country to rank in the top 15 in kills, hitting percentage and blocks. The Rams also rank high in assists (23nd), with setter Deedra Foss ranking eighth. Samantha Peters is one of three players nationally to average at least 1.47 blocks per set while hitting above.398. All-time, the Rams have won more than 86 percent of their MW matches (193-31,.862 winning percentage), far greater than any current or former opponent. Deedra Foss ranks first in the MW in assists, and Samantha Peters rank second in both blocks and hitting percentage. Several other Rams rank among the top 10, including Kaitlind Bestgen, who ranks third in service aces. Additionally, middle blockers Peters and Kelsey Snider are two of four players in the conference to rank in the top 10 in both hitting percentage and blocks, and the only set of teammates. For a complete listing, see Page 11. BORDER WAR BULLIES Separated by less than 70 miles, the rivalry between CSU and Wyoming dates back to 1976, the Rams first year as a program. The Rams have played the Cowgirls more than any other opponent, and have had great success over the years. CSU improved to all-time against its neighbors to the north on Nov. 5, including 33-2 under Head Coach Tom Hilbert. What s more, Hilbert has never lost to Wyoming at Moby Arena (17-0). However, he has stressed repeatedly that the importance of those matches was to prepare his team for its 20-match Mountain West slate. We want to win the Mountain West, Hilbert said. I think everything leading up to conference play was just that. We know that by winning the Mountain West we will go to the NCAA tournament. For the second consecutive year, a student bus with Ram Ruckus members traveled north to Laramie to watch the Rams defeat Wyoming 3-1 on Nov. 5, 2013.

9 2013 MATCH NOTES 9 COMEBACK KIDS Head Coach Tom Hilbert said his team played well during the first two sets at Utah State on Nov. 2, but the Rams were in an unfamiliar spot, falling behind 0-2 for the first time this season. CSU regrouped in the locker room and won Set 3, leading from start to finish, before pulling off a remarkable win in Set 4. Leading 22-19, Utah State went on a 5-1 run to set up Match Point at The Aggies serve went into the net, breathing life into the Rams, but CSU s next serve went long, bringing Utah State within one point of a victory once again. That s when the Rams offense took over, recording three kills in a row to win the set, The Rams used a 4-0 run in Set 5 to gain an advantage and did not trail, winning I saw a team that was resilient, Hilbert said. We just refused to give up. We blocked really well, which put them in a funny position. You could tell that Utah State s state of mind changed a little bit. Tonight was another challenge that we overcame, and I m proud of our players. It marked the first time CSU has bounced back from an 0-2 deficit since Sept. 2, 2011 vs. No. 5 Nebraska, and the first time the Rams have done it in a true road match since Nov. 10, 2011, at San Diego State. On the season, CSU has lost the opening set five times, winning all five times. EFFICIENT ATTACKING CSU leads the Mountain West and ranks sixth in the nation with a.298 attack percentage. In the season opener vs. Baylor, CSU posted a hitting percentage of.529 ( ), good for fifth-best in program history. Twelve times in this season CSU has hit above.300, including four matches in a row from Sept Four of the figures rank in the top 10 in the MW this season. We re a young team, but we re playing with more maturity as an attacking team than we did all last year, without a doubt, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. This is the lowesterror team we ve had since I ve been here. They re not the most athletic team I ve coached, but they don t make mistakes. In fact, at a.298 clip, it would be the second-highest efficiency in CSU annals, trailing only 2001 (.314). The team is on pace to make just 465 attack errors, second-lowest ever. At Boise State on Oct. 31, the Rams hit.440, with just five attack errors, including one unforced error. In 1987, CSU hit.800 ( ) in a win at Loyola Marymount. The percentage is not only a CSU record, but still stands as an NCAA single-match record 26 years later. DEFENDING THE ATTACK In addition to high attacking numbers, CSU ranks second in the MW in opponent hitting percentage, holding its opponents to.152 hitting, and under.100 six times including three of the four most-recent home matches. No team has hit better than.250 against CSU, and the Rams have been out-hit just once this season, but still earned the victory (at New Mexico on Sept. 28). BALANCED ATTACK Not only are the Rams attacking with great efficiency and at a high rate, but they re also receiving a balanced attack. Despite ranking No. 15 nationally in kills, CSU s leading attacker (Marlee Reynolds, 3.04 kills per set) ranks No. 9 in the Mountain West, and no players rank in the top 175 in the nation for kills (the NCAA does not release further than 175). Five different Rams have led the team in kills in a match, with all five averaging at least 2.48 kills per set. Additionally, four have posted at least 18 kills in a match this season. The biggest question entering fall camp and even entering the season was who would step up on the outside to replace last year s top three attackers, who all graduated. I knew our middle attacking would be good this year, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said, but we re having some players step up and become some pretty solid attackers. We re really playing as a team. There are no egos. Each night, someone steps up. Sophomore Adrianna Culbert has been the answer on the right side, while Reynolds, a junior, and Michelle Lawrence, a freshman, have played consistently on the left. Lawrence missed most of four matches in October due to an ankle injury, but sophomore Kaila Thomas stepping up and made an impact in three of the matches. BLOCK PARTY After graduating All-American Megan Plourde, the program s second-best blocker and NCAA leader in 2011, it looked as if CSU may lack on the defensive side at the net in In fact, early in the season, that was the key emphasis that Head Coach Tom Hilbert said his team needed to improve on. CSU has gotten significantly better throughout the year, however, posting double-digit block totals in 12 of its last 15 matches, and trailing its opponents in blocking just three times on the season. In the Rams win at Utah State (Nov. 2), they recorded 21 team blocks, sixth-most among five-set matches in CSU history, and the most since The Rams lead the Mountain West in blocks per set and rank sixth nationally. Senior Samantha Peters is the Rams top blocker, averaging 1.50 per set, good for 12th nationally. Over the last decade, CSU has ranked in the top 25 in the NCAA nine times, including the top 10 five times and top five on four occasions. In 2012, CSU ranked No. 15. If Peters can remain in the top 15, it will mark the sixth time in seven seasons that a player has ranked in the top 15 (Mekana Barnes: fifth in 2007 and 08; Megan Plourde: second in 2010, first in 2011 and eighth in 2012). SETTING THE WAY With two stellar seasons already under her belt and on pace to shatter her career high for assists in a season, All-MW Preseason Team selection Deedra Foss is putting herself in rare company. After being named the Mountain West Newcomer of the Year in 2011, Foss was selected to the All-MW team as a sophomore. On Tuesday, she moved into sixth place in CSU history, with 3,195 assists the most by a player during the 25-point scoring era. Entering her junior season, Foss was one of eight players in program history to register at least 1,100 assists in back-to-back seasons, and one of just six players to record at least 1,100 assists, 225 digs and 145 points in a single season. Foss joins Ashley Fornstrom as CSU s only setters to average10.50 assists, 2.10 digs and 0.85 blocks per set in two consecutive seasons. On the year, she ranks first on the team in assists, third in digs, blocks, and aces, and eighth in kills. She leads setters in the MW in both assists and blocks, and ranks second in aces. Foss currently is eighth in the NCAA in assists per set. She would be the first Ram to rank in the top 10 in assists since Ashley Fornstrom in END-GAME SUCCESS Perhaps the biggest reason for the early success is the team s ability to win close sets. Through 22 matches, 35 sets have been decided by five points or fewer; of those, the Rams have won 27. In sets decided by three points or fewer, CSU is 13-4, and in twopoint sets the Rams are Trailing Fresno State in Set 3 on Oct. 24, CSU went on a 9-0 run to gain a advantage, and held on to win the set, Against Utah State on Oct. 10, CSU trailed all of Set 2 until After the Aggies tied the score at 23-23, CSU took the next two points, closing the set on a 5-1 run to win a crucial third set. In a five-set win at New Mexico on Sept. 28, CSU won sets by scores of and Against Wyoming on Sept. 18, the Rams and Cowgirls were tied at each set including in Set 1 and in Set 2. The Rams ended each set with a run, however, to win all three. HOW SWEEP IT IS For the third consecutive season, CSU not only won its first three matches, but did so in straight sets. It marked just the sixth time in program history that the Rams won their first nine sets to a season. After four 3-1 road victories, the Rams swept four straight matches (Sept ) and won 17 consecutive sets until dropping Set 3 at New Mexico on Sept. 28. It was CSU s longest set winning streak since earning 24 straight sets in The Rams have earned 11 sweeps on the season, and have won 30 of 31 sets at Moby Arena. SERVING UP ACES Fort Collins native Kaitlind Bestgen ranks ninth in the Mountain West with 0.29 service aces per set, including five vs. Virginia (Sept. 6) and four at Air Force (Sept. 26) on both instances, Bestgen had four aces during runs of at least seven points. Her five-ace

10 2013 MATCH NOTES 10 match against the Cavaliers marked just the third time since 2009 that a Ram has had five aces in a match, and as a team, CSU s 11 aces was the most since November In addition to Bestgen, Adrianna Culbert, Cassidy Denny and Deedra Foss each are averaging at least 0.22 aces per set, which are among the top 20 in the MW. As a team, CSU ranks fifth in the MW in aces per set. DIGGIN EM ALL While the Rams rank relatively low in digs per set (8th in the MW), libero Jaime Colaizzi ranks fifth in the league (3.88), and is on pace to finish tied for seventh in CSU singleseason history. The sophomore already has five 20-plus dig performances this season, including in back-to-back matches in mid-october and a career-high 25 at Utah State on Nov. 2. Prior to Oct. 24, when she was held to seven vs. Fresno State, Colaizzi had recorded double digits in digs in 15 consecutive matches. What s more, Head Coach Tom Hilbert believes that this year s team may be the best he s ever had in terms of serve-receive percentage. LAWRENCE LIGHTING IT UP True freshman Michelle Lawrence is quickly becoming a fan favorite. After an eight-kill,.438 hitting performance in her collegiate debut, Lawrence led all players with 16 kills on.519 hitting in a three-set win over Northern Colorado on Sept. 3. She also added five blocks, totaling 19.0 points the kills and points totals were season bests for the Rams at the time. To put the numbers in comparison, Lawrence s 16 kills were the most by a CSU true freshman since Tess Rogers tallied 23 vs. San Diego State in Michelle Lawrence had an unbelievably good match for a true freshman out there playing, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said afterward. She was getting sets that I thought were good tempos for her. She also managed her out-of-system game very, very well. I thought she did a really good job of picking shots and managing her game. She established a new career high on Tuesday at Wyoming, recording a team-best 19 kills. Her current averages would rank fourth in hitting percentage (.262) and fifth in kills (2.81 per set) in CSU freshman history. STRONG SCHEDULE Four of CSU s 2013 opponents played in last year s NCAA tournament, including Northern Colorado (W, 3-0) Pepperdine (W, 3-1), Texas A&M (W, 3-0) and San Diego State (W, 3-1 and Nov. 27). The Aggies were unofficially ranked No. 26 when the two teams met in September, and Pepperdine and San Diego State both have received votes throughout the season. Of CSU s 19 opponents, 10 rank in the top 100 in the RPI. CSU moved up one spot, to No. 20, in this week s RPI. CSU has moved up five total spots in the five RPI releases. The RPI is based off of three categories: a team s winning percentage (25 percent), its opponents winning percentages (50 percent) and the winning percentage of its opponents opponents (25 percent). The Rams believe they need to be around the top 16 in order to have a good chance of hosting NCAA tournament first- and second-round matches, which they will submit a bid to do next week. CSU is one of eight teams nationally to be ranked in the top-50 RPI every season since the index was created in AVOIDING THE SWEEP CSU played 28 regular-season matches in In those contests, the Rams swept their opponents 15 times, but were never swept. San Diego State Regular Season Streaks Between Sweeps Matches Dates /2/11-Present 72 9/18/98-10/27/ /19/03-11/5/ /30/07-11/29/ /16/06-10/20/07 After 22 victories to begin the 2013 season including 11 sweeps CSU has now gone 71 regular-season contests without being swept, one shy of matching a program record (figure does not include NCAA tournament or Mountain West Championships matches). The last time the Rams were on the losing end of a sweep was Aug. 29, 2011 at Oklahoma. Prior to falling behind 0-2 at Utah State on Nov. 2, CSU had played in 51 consecutive regular-season matches without facing an 0-2 deficit. PERFECT IN NON-CONFERENCE PLAY A win vs. Texas A&M on Sept. 21 not only extended the Rams undefeated record to 10 matches at the time, but it also marked just the second time in CSU s 38-year history that the Rams have gone undefeated in non-conference action (9-0). CSU s remaining regular-season matches are against Mountain West opponents. The 1999 team is the only other squad to accomplish the feat, going 13-0 in regular-season non-conference play and 30-3 overall, which stands as the program s best winning percentage (.909). TOURNEY WINS With three wins in Malibu, Calif., capped with a victory over host Pepperdine to win the Pepperdine Invitational (Sept. 7), CSU improved to 27-5 in regular-season tournaments since September During that stretch, the Rams have taken first place nine times in 11 tries. Junior Deedra Foss was named the tournament MVP, while Michelle Lawrence and Samantha Peters were named to the all-tournament team. HOME-OPENING SUCCESS With a resounding home-opening win vs. Baylor on Aug. 30, CSU improved to 13-4 under Head Coach Tom Hilbert in home openers, including winners of six of the last seven. It marked the fourth straight year that the season opener regardless of location has come via a sweep. RECORDS WATCH Several Rams are approaching or are on pace to rank among the best among CSU single-season records: Jaime Colaizzi - Projected to have 397 digs (10th) - Averaging 3.82 digs per set (8th) Cassidy Denny - Projected to have 25 aces (just outside top 5 for freshmen; 28) - Averaging 0.24 aces per set (just outside top 5 for freshmen; 0.28) Deedra Foss - Projected to have 1,223 assists (most since 2008) Michelle Lawrence - Holds a.252 hitting percentage (4th among CSU freshmen) - Averaging 2.73 kills per set (5th among CSU freshmen) Samantha Peters - Holds a.402 hitting percentage (5th; highest since 2003) - Averaging 1.41 blocks per set (just outside top 10; 1.46) Team - Averaging kills per set (most in 25-point era) - Holds a.298 hitting percentage (T-2nd; highest since 2001) - Averaging assists per set (most in 25-point era) SECOND IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST Despite losing four seniors from last year s Mountain West championship squad, the Rams were still picked to finish second in the MW in CSU earned 90 total points, only behind preseason favorite San Diego State (99). 11 2013 MATCH NOTES 11 While it marked the first time since 2009 that CSU was not the favorite to win the league, even prior to the Rams hot start to the season, the expectations were still high. With our history, we bring out the best in every team, and it may be even more so this year because they re going to see our vulnerabilities, Hilbert said in August. Our team has to step up and, I think, win our home games and at least half of our road games if we re going to win the conference. That will be challenging. Of the eight times CSU has not been the favorite to win the league, the team has ended up being crowned champions five times. In 15 years, CSU has never been picked to finish lower than third, and each season, the Rams have earned at least one first-place vote. Junior Deedra Foss was one of seven players named to the All-MW Preseason Team. The setter was an All-MW selection a year ago after leading the conference in assists per set in conference action. ELITE EIGHTEEN Since the Mountain West formed in 1999, the Rams have won 10 regular-season championships, in addition to five tournament crowns in nine years. The figure is more than all other MW teams past and current combined. They also won two HCAC championships in the 1980s, plus the WAC Mountain Division title in 1998, giving them 18 overall conference championships to their credit, more than any other sport at CSU. CSU has won either the regular-season or conference tournament title or both each year since INTERNATIONAL FLAIR Just one year after the entire team took a foreign tour to Italy and France, CSU volleyball has continued its trend of playing internationally. Over the summer, Kelsey Snider played on the USA/BIP Global Challenge team, which traveled to China to compete in six international matches. Samantha Peters was also on the roster, but was forced to opt out after a back injury the day before departing from California. In May, Deedra Foss was selected to the USA Volleyball Women s National Team A2 program, and midway through the summer, she competed in Dallas, Texas, earning a silver medal. She was coached by Andy Banachowski, a six-time national champion and the winningest coach in NCAA history until Hawai i Dave Showji passed him earlier this fall. What s more, three 2012 seniors are now playing professionally Dana Cranston (Canadian National Team, professionally in France), Brieon Paige (Romania) and Megan Plourde (Croatia, Switzerland) in addition to 2001 senior Soraya Santos, who began her 12th season of professional volleyball this fall in Spain. The Rams have won 18 conference titles, which is more than any other sport at CSU. The program s success is seen on a national level, and can be broken down into three main categories: NCAA TOURNAMENTS CSU has been to 24 NCAA tournaments, including 18 straight dating back to Just 10 Division I teams have earned more overall tournament berths, and the Rams stretch of 18 consecutive appearances is the seventh-longest active streak in the country. TOP-25 RANKINGS The Rams have appeared in the final top-25 poll in 15 of 31 seasons since the AVCA began ranking teams in 1982, including four years in a row from Overall, CSU has been ranked in 244 of the 457 all-time weekly polls, which is the 15th-most in the NCAA. In what many have been calling a rebuilding year for Colorado State s volleyball program, the Rams kicked off the 2013 campaign in emphatic fashion, sweeping the Baylor Bears 25-12, 25-11, Friday night at Moby Arena. The first match of the year with a team as inexperienced as this one is, you couldn t have asked for a better overall performance, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. We stayed playing at a very high level throughout all three sets, and that is a mark of a very good team. The Bears had no match for the Rams outside hitting as Colorado State racked up 53 kills in the match on.529 hitting. The hitting percentage was the fifth-best in program history, and the highest since hitting.534 vs. BYU on Oct. 6, The Rams also committed just seven attack errors, the fewest in four seasons. Junior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds, who has stepped into the left-side outside hitter role left vacated by Dana Cranston, led the way for the Rams with 13 kills on.524 hitting. The 13 kills nearly doubled Reynolds previous career best (7), which was set in last year s opener, vs. Virginia (Aug. 24). I m really happy with Marlee because she asserted herself physically today, Hilbert said. If she has this kind of attitude every match she s going to do the right things. Also in double figures for the Rams was sophomore outside hitter Adrianna Culbert who finished the match with 11 kills, and junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider who notched 10 kills. Junior setter Deedra Foss helped pave the way for her attackers with 39 assists, in addition to a team-high 10 digs. Sophomore Jaime Colaizzi finished with nine digs, while Kaitlind Bestgen and Culbert each had six. The Rams also got a key contribution from freshman outside hitter Michelle Lawrence who posted eight kills on.438 hitting in her first collegiate match and earned the praises of her coach. She is physical, Hilbert said of his freshman outside hitter. She is Dana (Cranston) in terms of her ability and stature. She just has to become a better player in terms of experience. CSU utilized a strong serving game as well as really tough defense in the match to help the team gain separation from Baylor in each set. We served very well, and I knew that would be a weapon for us, Hilbert said. We were serving tough and that is a very important weapon, and it s going to be one for us for the whole year. For the match, Baylor recorded just 23 kills and had 17 attack errors as the Rams limited the Bears attack to.071 hitting. The right-back defenders today were better than I ve seen in many, many years, Hilbert said. I m happy about it, and I want to challenge these guys to play that well every time they go out on the court. The Colorado State Rams continued its excellence at home, taking down the Cal Poly Mustangs in three sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-16) on Saturday night at Moby Arena. I m very pleased with where this team is right now, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. We are better defensively than we ve been in a while, and we are a great serving team. We re getting to be really solid on the outside at times. Junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider helped pave the way for the Rams with 13 kills on.571 hitting. The match marked the second consecutive match that the new middle blocker hit above.500 with double-digit kills. Deedra (Foss) and I are starting to connect really well and I m starting to see more things, which is awesome, Snider said. The way I m built and the way I see things works better for me as a middle than they did on the outside. While Snider put the pressure on the Mustangs from the middle, sophomore outside hitter Adrianna Culbert provided a nice secondary punch for the Rams with 11 kills and six digs on.474 hitting. Freshman outside hitter Michelle Lawrence was third on the team with six kills. Foss helped anchor the Rams offense and defense, but fell just short of her second double-double of the year with 34 assists and nine digs. Michelle Smith and Jaime Colaizzi each had eight digs in the match for CSU, which limited Cal Poly to.178 hitting. This was the second match this year that CSU s opponent has hit below.200. The Rams also dictated play at the net, out-blocking the Mustangs, Senior middle blocker Samantha Peters led the way for CSU with six blocks, while Culbert and Snider each had three. CSU jumped out to early control of the match behind Culbert s strong play in the first set, but found itself in a tight match in the second frame with either team unable to get separation. The two teams played in see-saw fashion, exchanging leads and ties until finally the Rams were able to break through late and end the set on a 4-0 run to win, The crucial set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes. I thought we competed well at the end, Hilbert said of Set 2. Those are the moments that we have to do well in; this was a good effort. The Colorado State Rams swept intra-state rival Northern Colorado in convincing fashion Tuesday night in front of a crowd of 2,116 at Moby Arena (25-23, 25-12, 25-13). The win marks the fourth consecutive year that the Rams have begun a season 3-0, and improves the team s home winning streak to 11 matches. This was an interesting match, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. I don t think anybody out here is a superstar and goes out there thinking that this is going to be our go-to player, like Dana (Cranston) was last year. We just wait and see what happens and certain people emerge under that role in a particular match. Tonight it was Michelle. True freshman Michelle Lawrence had the best game of her young career, leading CSU with 16 kills on.519 hitting, while also registering a career-high five blocks in the match. The kill figure was the most by a Rams true freshman since Tess Rogers in On the court, I don t feel the nervousness that I felt in the first 15 points against Baylor, Lawrence said. I feel more of a calmness, and that has to do with my teammates also because they re all composed and under control, which leads me to be composed and under control as well. Sophomore outside hitter Adrianna Culbert was the only other Ram to record double-digit kills in the match. With 10 kills and 10 digs, Culbert posted her first career double-double. After beginning the match shaky (two kills and four errors on her first eight swings), Culbert responded with eight kills and no errors on her final 10 attempts. Junior setter Deedra Foss notched her second double-double of the season with 37 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore libero recorded a season-high 12 digs to help anchor the CSU defense, which held its opponent to under.100 hitting for the second time already this year. In the first set, the Rams faced its largest deficit of the year, trailing the Bears, CSU responded to the early adversity, using a 7-1 run to take a 13-7 lead. Colorado State dropped its first set of the season on Friday night but responded with three straight against Virginia to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 2010 (18-25, 25-17, 25-19, 25-19). The win came on the opening night of the Pepperdine Invitational at Firestone Fieldhouse. A year ago, CSU swept its first three matches at home, but fell on the road in its next contest, and didn t win its first road match until October. After winning all nine sets last weekend, the Rams made 12 total errors in Set 1 Friday night, falling for the first time, The first set we didn t point score well at all, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. I told my team between sets 1 and 2, They think that s who we are, and we know we re better, so if we can play better, we re going to shock them. That they did. After that, we played more solid and more composed, Hilbert said. When it got down to the end of sets, they were making more errors and we weren t doing those things. It was about who made the fewest mistakes, and who got kills at critical times. Senior Samantha Peters was the team-leader with a career-most 11 kills and four blocks. Freshman Michelle Lawrence added 10 her second straight contest in double digits as did junior Marlee Reynolds. Sophomore Adrianna Culbert finished with nine kills. Sam wasn t as much dynamic as she was smart, Hilbert said. She s important to our team in so many ways. After ties at each point from 1-1 to in Set 2, the Rams recorded consecutive points to take a advantage, and led for the remainder of the set, hitting.391. The momentum really turned in Set 3, however. Trailing 3-1 early, CSU went on a 9-0 run to gain a 10-3 advantage. During the stretch, which included two Virginia timeouts, sophomore Kaitlind Bestgen had four service aces. In all, Bestgen finished with five aces just the third time since 2009 that a CSU player has accomplished that feat and the team tallied 11, the most since Nov. 4, 2011 vs. Wyoming. On the flip side, the Rams had 12 service errors. Twelve is too many; I didn t feel like we were serving tough enough to have that many errors, Hilbert said. I do like that we had 11 aces, though. It was a battle each set, but in the end, Colorado State did the little things to help the Rams defeat UC Santa Barbara Saturday afternoon (28-26, 25-15, 17-25, 25-20) and remain perfect on the season. The win improves CSU s record to 2-0 on the weekend (5-0 on the season), and secures a top-two finish at the Pepperdine Invitational. It was a team effort on both sides of the net, as five Rams players had nine or more kills, led by sophomore Adrianna Culbert and junior Marlee Reynolds, with 13 apiece. Freshman Michelle Lawrence had 12, while Kelsey Snider had 10 and Samantha Peters added nine. As a team, CSU hit.318, holding UCSB (2-3) to.231 hitting. The Rams were out-blocked ( ), but led all other statistical categories, including assists, which setter Deedra Foss had a season-most 53. Foss was productive in all areas, also adding 13 digs her third double-double of the season four kills, two aces and two blocks. Behind Foss, three other Rams had 10-plus digs: Jaime Colaizzi (12), Culbert (10) and freshman Cassidy Denny (10), who started sets 2 and 3. After jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set and leading by as many as five at it looked as if the Rams would roll past the Gauchos. However, UCSB started chipping away, and instead of a four-point lead midway through, a call reversal after an injury delay brought the Gauchos to within two, UCSB would go on to take 13 of the next 18 points to force set point, That s when CSU took over, using a 4-0 run to hold its first set point, It would take three tries, but eventually, the Rams prevailed, winning Set 1, 28-26, on a Reynolds kill. The Colorado State volleyball team is off to its best start in more than a decade. After a 3-1 victory over Pepperdine Saturday night which featured a dramatic final set the Rams (6-0, 0-0 MW) were crowned the Pepperdine Invitational champions. Junior setter Deedra Foss was named the tournament MVP, while teammates Michelle Lawrence and Samantha Peters were named to the all-tournament team. These kids have made believers out of me, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said afterward. We still have some issues, but this team competes really well. That was seen on several instances on Saturday, first in the afternoon match, as CSU rallied from down to take Set 1 vs. UC Santa Barbara, More importantly, it was seen in the nightcap, which kept the Rams perfect record intact and helped CSU bring home another piece of hardware CSU has won nine of its last 11 regular-season tournaments dating back to the 2009 season. After a convincing Set-1 victory, in which CSU hit.412 and did not trail, the Rams had to battle for Set 2. A 10-1 Rams run midway through put the visitors on top, 17-7, and even though CSU would lead by double digits as late as 20-10, Pepperdine (4-2) came storming back, taking nine of 10 to bring the score to The Rams called timeout to regroup, and responded with four of the next five points to close the set and enter the break up 2-0. It did look like it would be an easier win once we got out to a 2-0 lead, but we know what type of team Pepperdine is, Hilbert said about the Waves, who, like CSU, are receiving top-25 votes. It was a competitive, competitive match, and we asserted our physicality on them. We were the better competitors tonight. After 11 ties and five lead changes in Set 3, Pepperdine emerged midway through the set and held off the Rams late, 25-23, to get on the board. Set 4, though, was the difference maker for the Rams. After leading by up to five on several occasions, Pepperdine s Taylor Racich served up two aces during a 7-0 run to put the Waves on top, Several points later, and trailing 22-20, the Rams tied the score with back-to-back blocks. The two teams exchanged the next two points before Reynolds posted her 18th and 19th kills of the match, the latter coming on a highly entertaining and extremely competitive rally, which ended with the Rams celebrating another tournament title. Pepperdine is a great team, and a great program, Hilbert said. Taylor Racich is a great player with a phenomenal jump serve. I knew we had to make it through that rotation, and once we did, I figured we were going to win that set. CSU has now won six consecutive true road contests, dating back to October of last year. It is the longest road winning streak since the 2004 team won eight consecutive. As a team, CSU hit.329, while holding Pepperdine to.195 hitting. Coming off an impressive showing at Pepperdine, the Colorado State Rams (7-0, 0-0 MW) continued its winning ways, defeating in-state rival Denver in four sets (18-25, 25-18, 25-21, 25-13) at Hamilton Gymnasium. The win marks the seventh consecutive true road match that the Rams have come away victorious in, the longest streak for the program since I thought this was a great performance, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. Our players did a great job. It was a great, competitive effort for our team, and I m really proud of them. Sophomore right-side hitter Adrianna Culbert had a night that most players could only dream of, leading the Rams with 23 kills and 14 digs on.512 hitting, as well as registering three service aces and her third consecutive doubledouble. Culbert s 23 kills were the most by a CSU player since Katelyn Steffan recorded 28 kills at Wyoming on Nov. 8, We had a bunch of different players who haven t played a lot, so I was just trying to step in and help them feel more comfortable on the court, Culbert said. It s fun to be out there, and I wanted to show them what it s like to compete at that level. The Rams were without two of their key players, Samantha Peters and Michelle Lawrence, but as it s been all season, someone new stepped up once again. For the third consecutive match, Colorado State had four different players finish with at least 10 kills, and in each of the three matches, it has been a different group of four. Despite hitting.368 and committing just one attack error, the Rams faced early adversity after losing the opening set, In Set 1, CSU had no answer for a Pioneers offense that rattled off 21 kills on.545 hitting. In Set 2, however, the Rams regrouped and looked like the team that had won six matches already this year. The team registered 17 kills on.500 hitting and was paced by junior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds six kills in the set. Reynolds provided a nice secondary option for CSU s attack, finishing with 15 kills on.378 hitting. In Set 3, the Rams found themselves in a tough back-and-forth battle with Denver, but kept making key plays in the set to spur the team on to victory. Colorado State continues to prove that it is a team that knows how to finish games. The 8-0 start to the season for the Rams, ties for the fourth-best in program history, last being accomplished in 1986, and is the best start overall since I m very pleased, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. They re (Missouri State) a good team, and I feel like this is a very good win for us. I think that they will finish in the top three in the Missouri Valley, which is a very tough volleyball conference. The Rams were playing without freshman outside hitter Michelle Lawrence for the second straight night, but once again, sophomore right-side attacker Adrianna Culbert stepped up in her absence. Culbert finished the match with a team-high 14 kills on a career-high.542 hitting, also registering seven digs and two blocks. Dri Culbert has been exceptional, Hilbert said of his star attacker. She is a great all-around volleyball player, and she has improved herself physically. Now her ability to play the game is getting more kills. Senior middle blocker Samantha Peters added nine kills and four blocks on.333 hitting, while sophomore outside hitter Kaila Thomas had one of her best matches in a Rams uniform with eight kills on a career-high.615 hitting percentage. Added Hilbert: Kaila was great today. She was really important in that third set, really important. I thought she did a great job. Once again, CSU s offense was clicking on all cylinders, amassing 46 kills on.376 hitting. It marked the fourth consecutive match that the team has hit above.300, and sixth time already this season. Entering the week, the Rams ranked 10th in the NCAA for hitting percentage. Matching its high-powered offense, CSU showed that it is not just a one-dimensional team. CSU played tough defense, out-blocking the Bears 11-4, and forced Missouri State into 23 attack errors and a hitting percentage of just.144. Sophomore libero Jaime Colaizzi led the way for the Rams with 14 digs, while junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider notched a team-high five blocks in the match. The Rams took control of the match from the very beginning and never trailed for the duration of the match. CSU is yet to lose a set in front of its home crowd. There is some Moby Magic, Peters said. At 9-0, CSU is off to the fourth-best start in program history, and its best start since 2001 when the program rattled off 20 consecutive victories to begin the year. With the win, CSU is now 17-0 at home against its rival from the north under Head Coach Tom Hilbert, and has won 17 straight conference home openers. It was a very competitive match, Hilbert said. It s the first time that we ve played three really close sets where we had to be focused the entire time; we couldn t take mental breaks. That s good for a team. Junior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds led the way for CSU with 12 kills and three blocks on.345 hitting. Once again, the Rams displayed great balance on offense. Including Reynolds, CSU had four different players reach double digits in kills as Adrianna Culbert, Samantha Peters and Kelsey Snider each registered 10 in the match. Deedra Foss, who is third in the nation with assists per set, once again distributed the ball efficiently to her team. The junior setter finished the match with 40 assists to increase her season average to assists per set. While the Rams have grown accustomed to rattling off impressive hitting percentage numbers in recent matches, hitting at least.300 in the previous four, they were held in check for most of the night against Wyoming s staunch defense. The Cowgirls came into the match featuring the nation s No. 1 blocker in Erin Kirby, and also boasted the nation s best blocking team. That strong play was on display on Wednesday, as Wyoming tallied nine blocks and 49 digs while limiting Colorado State to.266 hitting. Kirby finished the match with six blocks, while libero Becky Stewart tallied 23 digs for Wyoming to help keep rallies going and take away points from CSU. Each set featured at least six ties, with both teams being all squared at in all three sets, as well. As has been the pattern for this year s Rams, the team found a way to close out the games and take the match, including the crucial second set, which had 15 ties and seven lead changes. I think it s our competitiveness that comes out because it is close, Foss said. We make the right plays at the right times, and we re competitive, so we re going to do what it takes to win those games. I think we re way more competitive this year than we were last year, and having everyone out on the court wanting to win and be competitive really is what allows us to win those games. While Wyoming s defense was strong and at times frustrating for the Rams, CSU s defense rose to the occasion and was as equally suffocating. The Rams forced 18 attack errors and held Wyoming to just.195 hitting in the match. Furthermore, CSU won the battle at the net against the nation s top blocking team, out-blocking the Cowgirls, Along with their 10 kills, Peters and Snider each amassed five blocks apiece to help lead the way for the Rams on defense. They weren t the only ones getting in on the action at the net though, as six different CSU players registered multiple blocks. In the back, CSU also kept many points alive with great digs. Colorado State continued to showcase its excellence at Moby Arena, not dropping a set at home for the sixth straight match, and is now riding a 14-match home winning streak. Additionally, the Rams are now one of just six teams in the entire nation to still boast an undefeated record, and are tied for the third-best start in school history. This team continues to amaze me, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. I know that there are talented players on the team, but the maturity in which they are playing right now, considering the experience level of this team, is super impressive. While it was the first time that CSU did not have a single attacker register double-digit kills in a match this year, the Rams high-flying offense was still on full display with five different players recording at least seven kills. Junior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds and freshman outside hitter Michelle Lawrence led the way for CSU with nine kills apiece, while sophomore right-side attacker Adrianna Culbert, senior middle blocker Samantha Peters and junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider each had seven kills. The match between CSU and Texas A&M featured two of the premier offenses in the nation, but it was the defense from the Rams that turned out to be the story of the match as they were able to neutralize the Aggies. Culbert paced CSU with a career-high 17 digs while sophomore libero Jaime Colaizzi added 11 for a Rams team that finished with 52 digs in the match. Freshman Cassidy Denny posted nine digs while sophomore Kaitlind Bestgen added eight. With the stellar play in the back, CSU saved many points in a match that featured incredible long rally after rally. The great defensive plays swung the tide in the favor of the Rams. At the net, CSU was just as efficient, out-blocking Texas A&M, Peters had six blocks to lead the way for CSU while junior setter Deedra Foss registered five blocks. Snider and Reynolds each posted four. The Aggies came into the match No. 11 in the nation with kills per set, but could only manage 28 kills against the Rams (9.33 per set). Once again, though, the Rams exhibited what has been the identity for this team, and closed the set taking seven of the final eight points to win, This was just like the Wyoming match; just keep it close and win at the end, Hilbert said. You can t panic when those things happen, and tonight we didn t panic. We just kept it close and won at the end. That s what these guys are doing; they re doing it in every close set they play.

Off to its best start since 2001, the Colorado State Rams (11-0, 2-0 MW) persevered through early adversity and swept intra-state rival Air Force (25-20, 25-19, 25-16) Thursday night at Falcon Court at East Gym. Air Force is a much-improved team, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. They always make it challenging for us to get a win in their gym, and that was especially seen in Set 1. With the win, the Rams have now won eight straight true road matches dating back to last October, which is CSU s best streak since Additionally, CSU now improves to 40-1 all-time against its rival to the south, and has swept Air Force (3-11, 0-2 MW) in each of the last 18 meetings, including 30 of the last 31. While zero players reaching double-digit totals for kills in the match, the Rams had five different players record at least six kills. Senior middle blocker Samantha Peters, junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider and junior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds paced Colorado State with eight kills each. Sophomore right-side hitter Adrianna Culbert added seven, while junior setter Deedra Foss posted a season-best six. As a team, CSU hit.306 in the match and was aggressive at the net against Air Force. The Rams tallied 10 blocks in the match led by Peters with seven and forced Air Force into 16 attack errors and a.148 hitting percentage. It is CSU s fourth consecutive match with at least 10 blocks. We continue to improve our blocking, Hilbert said. Our middles were phenomenal. Kelsey had a good match and Sam continues to be consistent in all areas night after night. In Set 1, CSU got off to a sluggish start and trailed early in the match. Down and coming out of a timeout, the Rams responded with a 7-0 run to take control of the set en route to a victory. Sophomore defensive specialist Kaitlind Bestgen led the way for the Rams during the run, producing four service aces, marking the second time this year that Bestgen has registered four service aces in a seven-point span. We served tough tonight, Hilbert said. We made too many errors, but part of that is us serving tough. Kaitlind was phenomenal; she won Set 1 for us tonight, pretty much by herself. Continuing its momentum from the end of the first set, the Rams jumped ahead of the Falcons by taking 12 of the first 17 points in Set 2. Air Force clawed back to within two, 17-15, but as fans have come to expect with this year s team, CSU closed out the set strong, winning Leading in Set 3 and unable to gain much separation, the Rams went on a 10-3 to give them a commanding lead and seizing the match from the Falcons. No. 19 Colorado State was one point away from a three-set sweep on Saturday twice but New Mexico battled back to win sets 3 and 4, and took a three-point lead late in Set 5 before the Rams came from behind to defeat the Lobos (27-25, 25-18, 25-27, 16-25, 15-13) and remain undefeated on the season (12-0, 3-0 MW). CSU is one of six undefeated teams in the country. New Mexico is very difficult, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. We found a way to win, and I m proud of our team for that. Trailing 11-8 in the deciding set, Marlee Reynolds picked up her 12th and final kill to bring the score to within two, That s when two of CSU s true freshmen stepped up. With Cassidy Denny serving, CSU took the next three points including two kills on New Mexico overpasses by Michelle Lawrence to take a lead, the team s first since 1-0. The Rams then scored two of the next three points to set up match point. Coming out of a New Mexico timeout, CSU sealed the deal two plays later with a Kelsey Snider kill. The junior had a career-most 16 in the match. We served well in the fifth set and had some critical blocks and points, Hilbert said. In the fifth game, that s what you have to do. We sort of scrapped away until we found a way to win. With the win, CSU extended its overall winning streak to 12 matches, ninth-most in the program s storied history. The 12-0 start to the season is CSU s third-best ever. Additionally, the Rams have now won nine consecutive true road matches, the most since The win snapped New Mexico s 10-match winning streak and perfect record at home (11-2, 2-1 MW). Three of the sets were extremely tight, including the opening frame, in which CSU didn t take its first lead until Trailing late, 21-17, CSU battled back to bring the score to within two, The Rams fought off two set points, and after a New Mexico timeout, took three of the final four to win, CSU finished the set on runs of 10-4 and 5-1. In the second set, CSU led by as many as seven, but the Lobos cut the deficit to two, 16-14, before CSU took six of the next seven points. While the Rams were confident entering intermission, in the backs of their minds was the team s most recent trip to Albuquerque, in which CSU won the first two sets, but dropped the next three to lose in five. At one point it looked as if history would repeat itself before CSU came from behind and closed the door. Last year they dominated the last three games, Hilbert said. In my opinion, this should have been a 3-0 win for us. They made some lineup changes, and we had some critical plays that we didn t make at the end of the third set. CSU had two chances to sweep New Mexico, leading and in Set 3, but couldn t finish off the Lobos. The set loss was CSU s first since Sept. 10, a span of 17 straight sets. The Rams won the match despite being out-hit for the first time this season (.220 to.236) and out-blocked (11-15). In addition to Snider, who also led CSU with five blocks, the Rams saw offensive production from Adrianna Culbert, Lawrence and Reynolds, who each had 12 kills. Senior Samantha Peters had nine kills and four blocks. Junior Deedra Foss had a season-best 57 assists, in addition to four kills, five digs, three blocks and an ace. Denny had four service aces, including back-to-back aces in the first set, and Kaitlind Bestgen had a career-most 13 digs. The Nevada Wolf Pack were no match for the undefeated Colorado State Rams on Thursday night, as No. 17 CSU beat Nevada in four sets at the Virginia Street Gym. It s always a challenge when you re on the road, so I was proud of our players for composing themselves and playing a very clean match, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. The Rams (13-0, 4-0 MW) hit.377 in the match, including an impeccable.773 (17 kills-0 errors-22 attempts) in a Set-2 victory. The win is CSU s 10th consecutive true road win, dating back to a victory at Nevada on Oct. 27, 2012, the most since Overall, CSU s 13-match winning streak is tied for the fifth-best in program history. All of the outside hitters were really good, and Deedra (Foss) made some great choices, Hilbert said. Everything clicked tonight, and we got the win and took care of business. Junior Marlee Reynolds had 13 kills on.455 hitting. Three other Rams had at least 10 kills, with each hitting very efficiently: Michelle Lawrence (12 kills,.400 hitting), Adrianna Culbert (10,.533) and Samantha Peters (10,.368). Foss had 44 assists, in addition to four blocks and a pair of kills. CSU did not trail in either of the first two sets, but Nevada (2-13, 0-3 MW) out-hit and out-blocked CSU in the third set to earn a set victory. They got a little momentum going, and once they got ahead by about five points, they really played very well, Hilbert said. They sided out, didn t make a lot of mistakes and competed well. Seeing five tie scores early in Set 4, CSU trailed 9-10 before an 8-1 run put the Rams in front comfortably for the remainder of the set. We put Set 3 behind us, and then Bestie (Kaitlind Bestgen) got a little run going, Hilbert said. Once we got some separation they lost some steam. CSU did not trail in the opening two sets, leading by as many as nine in Set 1 and 13 in Set 2. Facing Set Point in the opening frame, Nevada went on a 4-0 run to bring the score within two, but CSU closed the door with a Peters kill. In the second set, CSU did not commit an attack error, and were led by Peters five kills on five swings. CSU out-blocked Nevada, 12-6, led by junior Kelsey Snider s seven. In a thrilling match at Moby Arena on Thursday night, the No. 13 Colorado State Rams (14-0, 5-0 MW) remained undefeated after topping Utah State, 3-1, (25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 25-18) in front of 2,806 fans decked out in pink for CSU s annual Dig Pink match to support breast cancer awareness. The win is CSU s 14th in a row, the fifth-longest winning streak in program history. Additionally, the Rams have now won 15 straight home matches, sixth-best all-time. From the opening point, the tone was set that this was going to be a defensive-oriented match that the Rams needed to find a way to grind through. We need to give credit to Utah State, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. They are a very good team. From the standpoint of blocking, digs and defense, they were one of the better teams we have faced all year, if not the best. With tough defense being played by both teams, the Rams hit just.173 while forcing Utah State (9-7, 3-3 MW) into 29 attack-errors and a.099 hitting percentage. That didn t stop CSU players from posting impressive numbers on the court, though. Led by sophomore right-side hitter Adrianna Culbert s 14 kills, CSU had three players register doubledigit kill totals, and had six players record at least six kills. Senior middle blocker Samantha Peters and freshman outside hitter Michelle Lawrence joined Culbert in double figures with 11 kills and 10 kills, respectively. The Rams also received a spark from redshirt freshman Acacia Andrews, who entered the match near the end of the second set. Andrews provided CSU with much-needed energy and recorded nine kills on a career-high.692 hitting. We put Acacia in, and that was probably the turning point of the match, Hilbert said. Acacia made a huge difference; she was terminal for us today. They had no answer for her, and that reminded me of practice where sometimes we don t have an answer for her either. In the opening set, the Rams trailed early after dropping three of the first four points. Once the Rams regained the lead at 6-5, the team made sure never to relinquish it, no matter how hard they were pushed. Leading by just one point at 11-10, CSU used a 6-1 run to jump ahead and seize control of the set. The Rams closed with a 5-1 run to win the set, In Set 2, CSU once against dropped three of the first four points, but this time it couldn t recover. After a back-and-forth with the two teams tied 12-12, the Aggies pulled away and won the set, 25-20, to tie it up at 1-1 heading into the intermission. It marked the first time all season that CSU had dropped a set at home. Undeterred, CSU came back and battled in the crucial third set that featured seven tie scores. The Rams once again found themselves down early and clawing from behind. Down 11-15, CSU began to mount its comeback. The Rams tied it up at 20-20, and took their first lead of the set at With help from Peters, who was responsible for four of the last five points in the set with a kill and three blocks, CSU won the third set 25-23, closing on a 5-1 run. Peters finished the match with a career-best eight blocks, but none were bigger than those which finished off Set 3. That third set was a huge turn around for us, junior setter Deedra Foss said, especially because we were behind the whole time until the end. It changed how we played in the fourth set, and added momentum going into it because of those two blocks at the end that got us the win. With all of the momentum from the intense third set carrying over into Set 4, CSU took a commanding lead at 15-8, and cruised to a victory.

The win gives the team its 16thstraight victory at Moby Arena, tied for the fifth-longest streak in school history. At 15-0, CSU is off to its third-best start in program history, and its 15 consecutive wins ranks as the fifth-longest winning streak in its storied history. The Rams are also one of just two undefeated teams in the country. This was a great game, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. Boise State is a difficult team to prepare for; they re very fast. You have to get your hands on a lot of balls, and you have to play defense to beat them. It was a great performance by a lot of people, and I am very pleased. With every win comes a different identity from CSU, which has found various different ways to win matches this year. With wins over Utah State and Boise State this week, CSU proved why it is one of the best defensive teams in the entire country. The Rams held Boise State to just.020 hitting and 26 attack errors, and frustrated many of the Broncos attackers. In particular, CSU neutralized Boise State s top two attackers. Alyssa Gammel, who is the team-leader in kills on the season, was held to just three kills on hitting, while Sarah Horton, who ranks second on the team, registered eight kills on.042 efficiency. It marked the second consecutive match that CSU held its opponent to under.100 hitting percentage. While the defense was suffocating, CSU s offense was clicking on all cylinders Saturday night. The Rams had just eight attack errors as the team registered 41 kills and hit.393. Leading the way for CSU was senior middle blocker Samantha Peters. Peters finished the match with a team-best 10 kills and zero errors on.556 hitting, while also posting a team-high five blocks. Freshman outside hitter Michelle Lawrence was second on the team with eight kills and three blocks, while sophomore right-side hitter Adrianna Culbert and junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider each had six kills and three blocks. CSU dropped the first point in the opening set, but quickly regained the lead by taking eight of the next 10 points as it looked to assert its dominance early on against Boise State. With strong defense, CSU finished the set on a 5-0 run and forced the Broncos into 13 attack errors and hitting. In Set 2, the Rams once again trailed after the opening point, but once again came back to take control of the set. With the match tied at 6-6, CSU took 15 of the next 19 points, including a 7-0 run midway through the stretch, to take a commanding lead. CSU hit an impressive.519 hitting with just two attack errors in the second set. Coming out of the intermission, CSU did not give Boise State a glimpse of hope for coming back in the match. The Rams took three of the first four points and led for the duration of the set as they closed it out, 25-18, to a standing ovation from the fans in attendance. I truly think it s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, Lawrence said. Having 4,000-plus fans there was really, I don t even know how to put it in words... It was really an incredible feeling. Added Hilbert: I know I speak for my team that we appreciate the fan support that we get. You take that environment that we had tonight and go across the country, there might be two other arenas the entire year that are as good as that. The win extended CSU s lead to two games in the conference standings. I m always happy to get through a competitive situation and win, because it helps your team s mindset, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. The win is CSU s 16th straight, the fifth-longest winning streak in program history. Even more impressive, the Rams (16-0, 7-0 MW) have now won 11 consecutive true road matches, which ties a program mark (also in 2003). After winning the first two sets and being within one point of a clean sweep on three occasions UNLV (10-7, 5-2 MW) came back to take the next two and force a fifth set. The Rams trailed late, 12-9, but finished the match on a 6-1 run to win the set, We came back and thought we had it at the end, Hilbert said of his team s comeback in Set 3. We had a couple swings to win it, but we ended up losing it, and then lost the fourth set, too. In Set 5, it was about who made fewer mistakes, and we made one fewer. Leading the match, 2-0, CSU trailed for much of Set 3, including by as many as six and by four at The Rams responded, though, with six straight points to hold a lead, and had three match-point opportunities before the Rebels took the final two points to win the set, Senior Samantha Peters paced the Rams on both sides of the net with career highs in both kills (14) and blocks (11). She hit Marlee Reynolds had a team-most 16 kills, followed by Kelsey Snider s 12 and nine apiece from Adrianna Culbert and Michelle Lawrence. Sophomore Jaime Colaizzi had 22 digs, including several great plays in Set 5 to keep plays alive. The total was one shy of a career high. Four other players had at least 10 digs, including career highs from sophomore Kaitlind Bestgen (16) and freshman Cassidy Denny. As a team, CSU had a season-best 15.5 blocks, and out-hit UNLV, despite hitting just.197. Again it was about balance, Hilbert said. Marlee and Sam were good early, but Michelle wasn t. Michelle was good at the end. Dri was good at the beginning and the end, but not the middle. Sam is a mature player. She knows, first of all, how to not hurt us if she s in a bad situation, and if she s in a good situation she gets kills. The Rams led from start to finish in the opening frame, jumping out to a 4-0 lead and never looking back. CSU used another 4-0 run midway through to push its lead to 13-6, and led by a season-high-tying 14 points at 24-10, before winning, In the second set, UNLV led early, 4-1, but a 4-0 run pushed the momentum to CSU s side, 9-7. The Rebels would get within one, 13-12, but the Rams took five straight and led by at least two for the remainder of the set. After winning late in Set 3, the Rebels continued their momentum from right into Set 4. They took an 8-7 lead and held onto it for the remainder of the set, winning, In the early stages of the fifth set it looked as if the Rebels were on their way to pulling out the surprising victory. Much like its match at New Mexico last month, the team once again responded to adversity. UNLV led late, 12-9, and was within reach of winning the match. That s when CSU responded with a 6-1 run, capped with a Culbert kill, to win the match and remain undefeated. The No. 12 Colorado State Rams knew this weekend would be one of the toughest of the season, facing two of the top teams in the conference. The Rams came away unscathed, though, capping it Saturday with a come-from-behind 3-1 victory at San Diego State (19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-17). CSU dropped the initial set and trailed late in Set 2 before staging a major comeback and shifting the momentum. The Rams went on to win the next two sets to remain undefeated, improving to 17-0 overall and 8-0 in the Mountain West. It was fantastic, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said of Saturday s win. This was a super competitive effort. Our team never lost their cool and battled the entire time. This team responds really well when it s tough. The 17-0 start is tied for the second-best in program history (also 1999), and the Rams 17-match winning streak is tied for fourth-longest. CSU has now won 12 consecutive true road contests, which is a program record, one ahead of the previous mark set in Our team just goes into these matches both being pretty hostile environments and plays with maturity, Hilbert said of the weekend road trip. I really like how this team is on the road. For the most part, we do the right things in adverse situations. Stepping up for an injured Michelle Lawrence, who did not suit up after injuring her ankle in practice on Friday, sophomore Kaila Thomas had a career-high 11 kills, hitting.308 from the left side. Thomas entered the match with just 23 kills in 20 sets on the season. To me, Kaila is our player of the game, Hilbert said. We needed her to step up in Michelle s absence, and she did. She didn t make a lot of mistakes and she kept fighting. We needed kills, and really in end-game situations is when she was getting them. She found different ways to get kills; she was very resourceful. I was real pleased. Also pacing the offense was junior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds and middle blockers Samantha Peters and Kelsey Snider. Reynolds had 18 kills while Peters had 13. Both figures were one shy of career highs. Snider added 11 on.400 hitting. Peters led CSU with nine blocks, followed by Reynolds seven (career high) and Snider s four. As a team, the Rams out-blocked San Diego State (9-9, 4-4 MW), 13 to 11, and out-hit the Aztecs.284 to 195. Jaime Colaizzi had 20 digs, including several diving stabs which prolonged rallies late in sets. The sophomore has posted 20-plus dig performances in consecutive matches. After losing Set 1, CSU trailed by as many as five as late as in the second frame. The Rams, though, responded with a 10-4 run to regain the lead at 23-22, and closed the set two plays later, It was the largest deficit CSU has overcome in a set victory this season. Thomas began the run with three kills, and Reynolds capped it with four kills and a block over the final six points for CSU. The Rams scored eight of nine points to go on top 12-8 in Set 3, and while the Aztecs would get within two on several occasions, CSU played in front for the remainder of the set. The Rams did not trail in Set 4, closing on an 11-3 run to win the match after holding a tie. San Diego State, which went 13-3 in MW play in 2012 to earn a share of the MW title with CSU, was picked by the league s head coaches to win the 2013 conference title. UNLV, which CSU beat on Thursday, is in second place. We played two tough teams on the road in the same weekend, and we won them both, Hilbert said. I m very pleased.

The 2013 Colorado State women s volleyball team is the team that keeps on winning. With a 3-0 sweep over then-second-place Fresno State Thursday night (25-20, 25-19, 25-23), the No. 12 Rams (18-0, 9-0 MW) remained undefeated on the year to stay in control of the Mountain West with a two-game lead over UNLV. CSU is off to the second-best start in program history, and along with Missouri, is one of just two undefeated team s in the country. The 18 consecutive victories also ranks as the fourth-longest winning streak in CSU s storied history. While the Rams took the first two sets of the match with relative easy, the third set was a hotly contested bout. As it seemed CSU was dead in the water, facing an eight-point deficit late in the set, the Rams brought in senior right-side hitter Cayla Broadwater, who turned the tide of the match. With three blocks in the set, Broadwater helped spur a 9-0 run that propelled CSU to its first lead of the set, The Rams would finish strong, winning the final set, The blocks marked the first points for Broadwater, a transfer from the University of Connecticut and a walk-on for the Rams, in a CSU uniform. I knew I went in for one reason, so I wanted to focus on one thing: that was blocking, which I m good at, Broadwater said. While the Rams didn t have a single player reach double digits in kills, they once again showed their versatility with four different players recording at least seven kills. Sophomore right-side hitter Adrianna Culbert and senior middle blocker Samantha Peters paced the Rams with nine kills apiece, while junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider and junior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds each had seven. Peters continued her strong defensive play from the previous weekend with eight blocks, giving her 28 blocks over the past three matches. Culbert led the way for CSU with 10 digs, while junior setter Deedra Foss had eight digs to go along with her 32 assists on the night. From the opening points, the tone was set for the night. Upon taking its first lead of the match at 3-2 in Set 1, CSU used a 5-1 run to gain some breathing room. The Bulldogs put up a fight late in the set by taking five straight to tie it up at 20-20, but the Rams made sure to never relinquish the lead. CSU responded with a 5-0 run of its own to close out the opening set. Coming out in the second frame, CSU picked up right where it left off at the end of Set 1. The Rams took the first three points and never trailed for the duration of the set. Peters was especially sharp for CSU in the second set, registering four kills on five attacks, and chipping in with three blocks. In the set, the Rams offense started to click, hitting.321 compared to Fresno State s.094 hitting percentage. Set 3 would be a different story, however. The Bulldogs snagged the opening point of the third set and played with a rejuvenated energy. As the two teams battled point for point, Fresno State began to pull away midway through the set. With all of the momentum and leading 19-11, Fresno State forced CSU to call a timeout as it was facing an unfamiliar situation in front of its home crowd. That s when Hilbert elected to make the change to put in Broadwater to help shore up the defense. The move paid dividends for the Rams as Broadwater registered three blocks and moved CSU closer to Fresno State. With each point, the crowd at Moby Arena grew louder and louder, willing the Rams on to victory. With Foss serving tough, and Broadwater and company playing strong defense at the net, CSU went on a 9-0 run to take its first lead at Despite recording just eight kills in the set, the Rams held on to win the clinching set, 25-23, erasing the eight-point deficit. We were very clean, and we passed the ball very well; our side-out percentages reflected it. We re glad to finish the first half of the league undefeated. Playing each other for the first time since San José State joined the Mountain West, the Rams made sure not to give the Spartans a warm welcome to their new conference. From the first point, CSU s offense was clicking on all cylinders. Led by junior setter Deedra Foss 37 assists, the Rams hit.488 ( ) for the match, hitting at least.444 each set. On the other end, apart from a strong second set where the Spartans hit.344, SJSU s offense was neutralized by CSU s defense. As a team, the Spartans hit just.163 and were forced into 16 attack errors. Junior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds had another strong showing on Saturday, posting 15 kills and three blocks on a season-best.583 hitting percentage. It marked the third time in the last four matches that Reynolds has eclipsed the 15-kill mark. Marlee had a fantastic game, Hilbert said. She had a lot of split blocks to look at, but she also made great decisions and hit the ball high and hard. That s what we need to see from her. While Reynolds paced the Rams with 15 kills, sophomore right-side hitter Adriana Culbert, junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider and senior middle blocker Samantha Peters all provided great balance and registered eight kills apiece. Sophomore outside hitter Kaila Thomas, who was still filling in for the injured Michelle Lawrence, added six kills. Impressively, every CSU attacker hit at least.308, while six different players hit above.400 for the match. While the Rams only had 5.5 blocks for the match, the Spartans were pushed to take aggressive swings due to CSU s offense that often times forced San José State to play out of system. In the back row, sophomore libero Jaime Colaizzi registered 10 digs while freshman defensive specialist Cassidy Denny had nine and Culbert chipped in with eight. CSU got off to as great of a start as it could have hoped for in the opening set. With Denny serving, the Rams quickly rattled off five consecutive points and forced a quick timeout. CSU took nine of the first 10 points in the set, and got more strong serving from Colaizzi. Colaizzi had back-to-back aces midway through the set, and finished with a career-high three service aces, all of which came in the first set. Behind the strong serving and efficient attacking, CSU never trailed en route to a win. The Spartans took their first lead early on in Set 2. The lead didn t last long as the Rams regained the lead at 8-7 and never relinquished it. While SJSU stayed within three or four points for most of the set, CSU pulled away late, taking the final three points to win, Reynolds and Culbert were both especially effective in the second set, each notching five kills on just six swings. Coming out of the intermission with a 2-0 lead, CSU left little doubt as to where this match was headed. Leading 7-6, the Rams went on an 11-1 run to take a commanding lead in the match-clinching set, which they would win I look forward to conquering those tough matches, Colaizzi said of the upcoming road trip. I think our record is great, but it doesn t mean anything yet; we have a long way to go and a lot to still do. I think we have some tough road matches coming up, so that s where my focus is right now.

It also marks the 19th straight season that the Rams (20-0, 11-0 MW) have won at least 20 matches, the fifth-longest active streak in the country. We played extremely well tonight, and it was a good win for us, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. The team is preparing well, and they re figuring out how to play well consistently. I m super impressed with this group. The Rams hit.440 on the night, the second consecutive match above.400 and fourth time this season. What was more impressive, however, was that CSU committed a season-low five attack errors, including just one unforced error. To do that on the road is remarkable, Hilbert said. If we hit like we did tonight we can compete with any team in the country. Junior Marlee Reynolds led all hitters with nine kills, also adding a team-high-tying four blocks all of which came in the first set. Four others had at least four kills, including middle blockers Samantha Peters and Kelsey Snider, who combined for 16 kills on.625 hitting. Everyone played really well tonight, but especially Marlee, Hilbert said. She had some pressure shots and got some great kills. If tonight is any indication as to how we re going to play the second half of conference I m really pleased. CSU held an 11-9 early in the match and forced Boise State (10-12, 4-8 MW) to burn both of its timeouts during a 7-3 run to take an lead. The Rams would remain in front by at least four for the remainder of the set, outhitting Boise State,.333 to.103. The Broncos hit much better in Set 2 (.310), but so did the Rams, recording 17 kills on 27 swings for.593 efficiency. We played consistently well throughout the course of the match, Hilbert said. When they played well in the second set we played better. Following ties from 1-1 to 4-4, CSU used a 15-6 run to gain major separation, leading by as many as nine. The Rams have experienced it all this season, except for a loss. By winning the final three sets against Utah State on Saturday, CSU did what no other team in the proud history of CSU volleyball has ever accomplished: begin a season To me, what s more magical is that we won this five-set match the way we did, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. Twenty-one wins is great, but we re here because we re playing consistently well every night, and that s what we ve got to continue doing. Tonight was another challenge that we overcame, and I m proud of our players. At first, it looked as if history would not happen, as CSU dropped the first two sets.. It marked the first regular-season match since Nov. 10, 2011 a span of 50 matches that CSU has fallen behind 0-2 in. The Rams out-hit and outblocked Utah State in Set 2, but as Hilbert said, couldn t make a dent in Utah State. CSU would chip away getting within two in the first set and one in Set 2 but couldn t overcome the deficit. His halftime message was simple. I told them that this is another chapter to our season, and that we can t control how they play, we can just control how we play. I told them, Let s go out and try and be good and do it with composure. We re in unfamiliar territory being down 0-2, but we re still the same team. And that s when the tide began to turn. The Rams limited the Aggies to.000 hitting in Set 3, recording seven blocks in the third set alone. CSU did not trail in the set, using a 10-3 run to take control after a tie at 4-4. The Rams led for a good portion of Set 4, as well, holding a lead late. However, Utah State took five of the next six points to set up Match Point. Utah State s Hannah Gleason s gave CSU life, though, as her serve went into the net. But on the next play, CSU s Deedra Foss did the same, setting up another do-or-die situation for the Rams. CSU buckled down, taking the next three points the final two coming on the swing of junior Kelsey Snider to win Set 4, 27-25, and even the match. At that point, the Rams had all of the momentum, and it carried over into the deciding set. CSU took the lead for good at 5-4, when junior Marlee Reynolds recorded her 15th of her team-high 16 kills. The Rams would then take the next three points, giving the visitors an 8-4 lead as the teams switched sides. That was the closest Utah State would get, as CSU closed out the set and comeback, hitting.571 (8-0-14). I sit back sometimes in awe of this group of players, and the things they continue to do in these tough situations, Hilbert said. I don t think this is me as a coach. I think this particular group has character, and just have it. They have a magical way of competing and doing well in end-games. That s just these kids; they re great. I told them at the end of the game that it was kind of a magical night. The win was the first time CSU has overcome a two-set deficit since Nov. 2, 2011 against No. 5 Nebraska, and the first time the Rams have done it in a true road match since Nov. 10, 2000 at San Diego State. In addition to establishing a new program record for wins to start a season, the 21-match winning streak is the second-longest overall. Additionally, CSU extended its program-best true road winning streak to 14 matches, and improved to 12-0 in Mountain West play for the second time since the league s inception in That s a record that these players deserve all the credit for, Hilbert said. They re just good competitors. They have a lot of grit and determination. You can say what you want about our schedule or whatever, but we haven t lost in 21 matches, and we ve been in some pretty precarious situations, and that s pretty neat.

With the win, Colorado State (22-0, 13-0 MW) also extended its program-best true road match winning streak to 15 matches, dating back to Oct. 27, The Rams also improved to 33-2 all-time against Wyoming (14-13, 4-9 MW) under Head Coach Tom Hilbert. Although Tuesday was a road contest, the Rams felt right at home, playing in front of approximately 150 to 200 CSU fans who made the trip to cheer on their team. This was fun, Hilbert said. It s an electric environment, and we had a lot of fans here, which is awesome. Freshman outside hitter Michelle Lawrence had a night to remember, leading the Rams to victory over their rival to the north. While earning the second start of her career, Lawrence rose to the occasion, pacing CSU with a career-high 19 kills on.297 hitting. The 19 kills were the most by a CSU true freshman since Tess Rogers registered 23 kills in a match against San Diego State in Michelle was great, Hilbert said. She s a very, very smart hitter for being 18 years old, and she was the most steady force for us. As has been the case all season, the Rams exhibited an incredibly balanced offense with four different players reaching double figures in kills. Senior middle blocker Samantha Peters (13), junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider (13) and sophomore right-side hitter Adrianna Culbert (10) each joined Lawrence in double digits, as the Rams hit.312 as a team. Deedra Foss had a double-double with 50 assists and 11 digs, while Jaime Colaizzi had a match-best 16 digs. The impressive hitting was on full display in the first set as CSU registered 17 kills and just three errors while posting a.378 hitting percentage. The efficient numbers were not enough for CSU, though, as Wyoming s offense matched everything that the Rams were doing. Although CSU brought it to as close as one point several times, Wyoming did just enough down the stretch to hold on to the close back-and-forth set, CSU responded to the early adversity in Set 2 with a 4-0 run to tie it up at 7-7, and then used a 9-1 run to take a commanding 16-9 lead in the set. While CSU s offense continued to flourish with 13 kills and zero errors on.524 hitting in the set, Wyoming s sputtered, as the Cowgirls were limited to.062 hitting and forced into nine attack errors. The Rams recorded four blocks in the set and were led by Peters, who registered three herself, as the team closed on a 22-6 run to win the set and go into the intermission tied 1-1. In the crucial third set, the Rams found themselves again in a see-saw battle with both teams trading points and unable to create separation. With the set tied at 16-16, CSU began to make its move. Head Coach Tom Hilbert earned his 600th career victory on Saturday night as his No. 10 Colorado State Rams (23-0, 14-0) remained undefeated with a sweep over Nevada (25-18, 25-18, 25-19) in front of 4,418 fans at Moby Arena. With the win, Hilbert becomes just the 10th coach in NCAA history with 600 career wins and a career winning percentage above.770. I have 600 wins because I ve been consistently good over the past 25 years, but I ve been a coach all that time and I ve gotten to do a really cool job, Hilbert said. That s what 600, to me, means. I m not winning any of these games, but I am shepherding this program through a pretty good time, and I m happy about that. In a season full of highlights and record-breaking performances, the Rams added to it on Saturday. With 23 straight victories, CSU tied the school record for most consecutive victories, which was also set in Dating back to Oct. 25, 2012, the Rams have now won 31 consecutive regular-season matches, which is the longest active streak in the nation. Additionally, CSU continues to be dominant in front of its home crowd. The Rams own a 19-match winning streak at home, which is the third-longest in program history and tied for the third-longest active streak in the nation. In Saturday s win, sophomore right-side hitter Adrianna Culbert and junior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds paced the Rams with 11 kills apiece, while junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider and freshman outside hitter Michelle Lawrence each added eight. As a team, CSU racked up 49 kills on.323 hitting compared to 33 kills for Nevada (2-24, 0-14 MW) on.174 efficiency. At the center of CSU s potent offensive attack was junior setter Deedra Foss. Foss, who entered the match ranked eighth nationally averaging assists per set, upped her total with an impressive 44 assists (14.67 per set) in just three sets. We have one of the best setters in the United States, Hilbert said of Foss. She gets her hands on a lot of stuff, she saves plays, she makes good decisions and she has a good feel for the flow of the game and who s hot. Foss performance was on full display in the early stages of the match as the junior helped lead the Rams to a opening-set victory over the Wolf Pack. The set featured 10 ties and five lead changes, as for much of the set neither team could separate themselves by more than two points. As has often been the case this season, the Rams found themselves in a tight set near the end before closing the set out in impressive fashion. Tied at 17-17, CSU closed on an 8-1 run to take the first set and seize the momentum in the match. We came out slow in the first set, but we definitely ended the first set really playing our game, freshman middle blocker Acacia Andrews said. Andrews earned her second start of her career on Saturday, totaling seven kills and a team-high four blocks. The Rams took that momentum from the end of the first set and carried it with them right into Set 2, where Foss elevated her game to another level. Taking nine of the first 12 points, CSU opened up a comfortable lead over the Wolf Pack in a set in which the Rams never trailed. As a team, the Rams hit.406 and were led by Culbert s six kills and zero errors on just nine attacks, while Foss had a career-best 19 assists as she helped guide CSU to a win and a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission. Looking to finish the match in the third set, CSU found itself in a tightly contested battle at the beginning. The two teams traded points in the early stages of Set 3, which featured six ties and two lead changes. 30 2013 MATCH NOTES 30 The Colorado State women s volleyball program has become synonymous with consistent winning under the guidance and tutelage of Head Coach Tom Hilbert, who is in his 17th season with the Rams and his 25th overall as a collegiate head coach. With eight Mountain West Coach of the Year awards to his credit in the league s 14-year history, it is clear why Hilbert s program has risen to the top of the league and has become a stalwart on the national stage as a perennial top-25 team. Under Hilbert, who was inducted into the CSU Athletics Hall of Fame as the Hall of Honor recipient in 2006, the Rams have developed into one of the top programs in the nation, qualifying for the NCAA tournament all 16 seasons. Overall, CSU has played in 18 straight tournaments, which ranks seventh nationally among active streaks. The stretch also includes five Sweet 16 appearances and 13 first-round victories.
