That match will be played at 7:30 p.m. MT on Saturday. With a victory Saturday, CSU would advance to the tournament championship on Sunday at 6 p.m. MT. The winner not only will be crowned as the 2011 Mountain West Tournament champion, but will also receive the league s only automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. CSU has won more championships (4) than any other MW opponent (current or past). The Rams have appeared in six championships. UNLV, which won in 2007, is the only other current MW member to have won the tournament. The Rams have never lost in the quarterfinals. CSU has been the top seed six times, including The No. 1 seed has appeared in the finals in seven of the nine years (not 2002 or 2007). However, the No. 1 seed has won the tournament just once (CSU in 2003). The top two seeds have faced each other in the championship match five times, but never since The No. 8 seed is 3-9 in the MW championship, but has never won a quarterfinals match (all three wins came between 2005 and 2007 when the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds played an opening-round match). Air Force has never won a match in the MW championship will mark the first time since 2007 that the tournament has been played, and the first time ever it has been held in Albuquerque. Local fans can tune in to 90.5 on the FM dial, while others can stream the broadcast online at Eric Dewey and Connor Farrell will be giving fans the play-by-play. What s at stake... A 17th consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament. The team s fifth MW tournament championship. The program s 16th overall conference championship, which would put it alone for most conference championships among any sport at CSU (currently tied at 15 with football). With a win Friday... CSU will advance to the semifinals against either No. 4 Wyoming or No. 5 New Mexico, Saturday at 7:30 p.m. MT. The Rams will have won their 20th match of the season, marking the 17th straight year CSU has accomplished 20 wins in a season. The volleyball program will collect its 750th all-time win. CSU will improve to 36-1 all-time against Air Force, including 36 straight wins since the program s only loss in All-conference team The coaches have voted, and on Thursday evening, the 2011 Mountain West allconference team will be announced. Several Rams are being considered for the eight-player team, including senior Katelyn Steffan, who is also a candidate for the Player of the Year award. The league will also announce its top newcomer, freshman and coach of the year. Megan Plourde, a two-time all-mountain West selection, is the only current Ram to have been honored. Head Coach Tom Hilbert has won seven of the league s 12 Coach of the Year trophies. Last week s recap The Rams, riding a seven-match win streak, suffered a setback last Thursday in Fort Worth, falling to TCU in five sets (21-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-20, 11-15). Four players recorded double-digit kill totals, led by junior Megan Plourde s 17 on.375 hitting. She also had a team-leading eight blocks in the match. Dana Cranston (13 kills), Brieon Paige (13) and Katelyn Steffan (11) were the other offensive threats, while Tori Brummett also tallied eight blocks. Izzy Gaulia set a career high with 28 digs. CSU rebounded on Saturday, earning a hard-fought win in Albuquerque (19-25, 25-14, 25-19, 22-25, 15-11). The Rams dropped the opening set, but took the next two, including Set 3, which featured 14 ties before the Rams claimed the set s final six points. New Mexico forced a fifth set, and although there were five ties in the deciding set, CSU never trailed, taking the set and match. For the second consecutive contest, four players totaled 10 or more kills, including Paige (16 on.412 hitting), Cranston (15), Plourde (14) and Steffan (11). Steffan also recorded 11 digs and eight blocks, marking her fifth double-double of the season, while Plourde set a season high with 11 blocks. In all, CSU recorded a season-best 19.0 total blocks. Back to back to back CSU earned a three-set win over Wyoming on Nov. 4, and less than 24 hours later, TCU fell on the road, giving the Rams their third straight MW regular-season title. Since the conference formed in 1999, CSU has won nine regular-season championships and four tournament titles (the tournament was played between ). It marks the third straight season that the Rams have led the conference wire-to-wire. In all, CSU has won 15 conference championships (including 1985 HCAC and 1998 WAC), tied with the football program for most conference championships among the university. Sweet 17 The Rams enter the MW championship with one goal in mind: winning the tournament and earning their 17th consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament. In 2010, CSU beat Cal State Fullerton in a memorable come-from-behind rally in the opening round before falling to host and No. 3 Stanford the following night. In the 16 years, CSU has gone in the tournament, advancing to the Regional Semifinal five times. Hilbert will also be joined by a different player each week. Receiving votes With its loss to TCU last Thursday, the Rams fell out of the AVCA Coaches Top-25 Poll for the second time this season. CSU was previously ranked No. 23, and peaked at No. 14 in September, after beginning the year in the 15th spot. CSU still received 50 votes in the latest poll, released Monday, good for 27th-best in the nation. Since the poll was introduced by the AVCA in 1982, CSU has appeared in 254 of the 421 polls including 29 of the last 32 since Nov. 2, Only 14 schools in the country have been ranked more often than CSU, led by Nebraska and Stanford, which have appeared in every AVCA poll. Nebraska and Oklahoma, two of CSU s 2011 opponents, also earned votes. The Huskers fell to No. 4 after suffering their third defeat of the season, while the Sooners were also knocked out of the top 25, but still received votes. 750 A win over Air Force on Friday would give the CSU volleyball program its 750th all-time win. The program, which began in 1976, holds a record of (.667), and has won 15 conference championships and has earned 22 NCAA tournament berths. CSU earned its first victory in 1976 against Laramie County Community College, and its 700th just more than two years ago, against San Diego State (Nov. 7, 2009). How sweep it is After suffering a heartbreaking defeat at Wyoming on Oct. 8, the Rams didn t drop a single set for more than a month, sweeping seven consecutive opponents until TCU took the first set in the teams Nov. 10 contest. The seven straight sweeps is tied for third most in program history, and longest under the current scoring structure. CSU also rattled off seven sweeps in a row in 1999, eight in 1986 and a school-record 13 later in the 1999 season. Quick work Thanks to 15 CSU sweeps this season, the Rams have played just 85 sets on the year, fewest in the MW. Air Force has played in 87 sets and San Diego State has competed in 95, but the remaining five teams have all played 100 or more sets, including three teams with 113. CSU s conference opponents are averaging sets this season. 550 With CSU s win over Wyoming on Nov. 4, Head Coach Tom Hilbert earned his 550th career win (including eight seasons at Idaho). Hilbert currently holds a record of (.767) in 23 seasons, and is (.799) in 15 seasons in Fort Collins. Last year he became the winningest coach in any sport at CSU, when he eclipsed 357 wins. His career winning percentage ranks 10th among active coaches, and he has led CSU to 13 conference championships (nine regular-season, four tournament) during his tenure.

5 Home-court advantage For years, Moby Arena has been known as one of the most hostile venues for opposing teams to play in. Not only does the arena produce big crowds, but the team on the court produces big wins at a high rate. In 14-plus seasons under Hilbert, the Rams are (.887) at Moby, including against nationally ranked teams. The Rams, who do not have another home match scheduled for this season, closed regular-season play 11-1 (.917) at home, including winning their final nine. Dating back to 1995, CSU has recorded at least 10 home wins each season. The season winning percentage ranks ninth all-time, and marks the ninth time CSU has lost one match or fewer at Moby Arena, and first time since CSU played just 12 games at Moby Arena this year, its fewest total in nearly two decades. The last time the Rams played so few home matches was in 1983, when just seven of the team s 39 matches were played in Fort Collins. RPI released Coach Hilbert continues to stress the importance of the RPI (Ratings Percentage Index), which is one of the key factors in determining teams for the NCAA tournament. The season s fifth RPI was released on Monday, and despite a loss to TCU, CSU remained at No. 31. The Rams have moved up 11 spots in the past three weeks. Conference foe Wyoming jumped 18 spots over the week to No. 75, while TCU (55) and San Diego State (92) also rank in the top 100. Six non-conference opponents rank in the top 70: Nebraska (4), Oklahoma (30), Middle Tennessee (48), Wichita State (49), New Mexico State (63) and Arkansas (66). Tough road ahead The Rams are known to succeed on the road, but in the month of November, they ll be tested even more. CSU s two road matches last week (at TCU and New Mexico) were against two teams ranked in the top 20 in national attendance averages. The conference tournament will be played in New Mexico s arena, as well, and afterward, the Rams will conclude their regular season with a non-conference match at New Mexico State. The Aggies rank No. 23 in attendance. From there, CSU s season could continue with road matches in the NCAA tournament. Starting fast The Rams have won the first set of a match 18 times this season, and the first two on 17 occasions. The match at Wyoming on Oct. 8 marked the only time this season that CSU has lost after leading 2-0. They are 16-1 overall. Weekend success If the Rams were superstitious, the day of the week would matter. CSU is 10-1 in Saturday matches. The Rams are also perfect on Sundays (1-0), and undefeated (7-0) in day matches. Fortunately for the Rams, the conference tournament falls on a weekend, and their non-conference match against New Mexico State will be played on a Saturday. Player of the Week On Oct. 31, after leading the Rams to two conference wins, junior Brieon Paige was rewarded with her first career Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week award. Paige, a 6-2 middle blocker from Sacramento, Calif., averaged 2.83 kills per set on.630 hitting in sweeps over San Diego State (Oct. 27) and UNLV (Oct. 29). In the six sets, she recorded 17 kills without making an error. Paige also added eight blocks, two digs and an assist in the pair of matches. The award was CSU s fourth in 12 weeks this season (10 at the time). It is the first time since 2008 that at least four Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week honors have been given to a CSU student-athlete. Megan Plourde was awarded for the week of Sept. 5, while Katelyn Steffan has been honored twice (Oct. 3 and Oct. 17). Steffan s two awards also mark the first time in three seasons that a player has won two awards in the same season. Mekena Barnes did so twice in Plourde at the net Junior middle blocker Megan Plourde has already established herself as one of the best blockers in program history. She finished 2010 ranked No. 2 in the country with an average of 1.62 blocks per set, and set a conference record with 19 total blocks in a NCAA tournament win over Cal State Fullerton last December. Entering the MW tournament, she is ranked No. 2 nationally again, with 1.68 blocks per set, just 0.01 behind the national leader. She has led the Rams in blocking on 18 occasions this season, and her current average would be the highest ever among CSU players (currently Angela Knopf with 1.66 blocks per set in 2000). Last week, in road matches against TCU and New Mexico, Plourde totaled 19 blocks, including a season-high 11 (tied for most in MW this season) at New Mexico, which featured two solo blocks, tying a career high. Notes (cont.) Colorado State Volleyball Steffan it up Senior Katelyn Steffan has led the Rams since the first match of the season, but her game has significantly stepped up since conference play began. In conference play, the team captain averaged 3.71 kills per set on an impressive.285 hitting (first among MW outside hitters). In addition to 0.94 blocks (10th in MW) and 0.22 service aces per set (just outside top 10), the opposite hitter is averaging 4.47 points per set in conference matches, and has two of the league s top three kill performances on the season. With at least two matches remaining, Steffan has already surpassed her best kill and point totals for a season, and has led the Rams in kills 16 times. At her current pace, she is set to finish with the highest kill-per-set average in four years. She also can eclipse more than 900 career kills, depending on how far the Rams advance in the MW tournament later this month, and possibly the NCAA tournament in December. Top of the Mountain In 13 seasons with the MW, CSU has led the charge, winning nine conference championships, including four MW tournament titles in nine seasons (not including 2011, which will be played Nov ). No other current MW team has taken home a regular-season conference title. Utah won or shared three titles during its 12 seasons with the conference, while BYU won or shared a pair of championships. CSU has recorded more blocks than its opponent in 21 of its 24 matches, going 18-3 in those situations. CSU is also 1-0 when tying its opponent in blocks. Nationally, the Rams rank sixth in the country with 3.02 blocks per set. Junior Megan Plourde, who averages 1.68 per set, ranks second in the country. CSU has recorded double-digit block totals 16 times this year, including a seasonhigh 19 at New Mexico last Saturday. 10 X 4 For the first time in nearly two years, four different players recorded double-digit kill totals in a match. Megan Plourde (17), Dana Cranston (13), Brieon Paige (13) and Katelyn Steffan (11) did so at TCU on Nov. 10, doing so for the first time since Danielle Minch (22), Plourde (18), Jacque Davisson (14) and Tessa Nelson (13) accomplished the feat against UNLV on Nov. 21, Even more impressive is the fact that the Rams did it again two days later, when the same four individuals did so at New Mexico. Leading the attack CSU ranks seventh nationally with a.280 attack percentage. In conference play, the Rams are even better, hitting at.295, more than.045 higher than the next-closest competition. Brieon Paige is the conference s best hitter in MW action, hitting at.362. Behind her is Megan Plourde (.302; ninth), and Tori Brummett (.297; 10th). Among outside hitters in the MW, Steffan and Dana Cranston rank first and third respectively in hitting percentage.

6 Defending the attack The Rams lead the MW in hitting percentage, but also rank first in opponent hitting percentage, allowing their conference opponents to hit just.129 on them. In the second half of conference play (seven matches), TCU had the most success against CSU, hitting.211. Boise State and UNLV both hit under.100, while Air Force and Wyoming recorded more errors than kills, hitting in negative digits (-.043 and -.024). Overall, CSU opponents have hit below.100 eight times, and have hit above.250 just once. Best in the West Entering this week, CSU ranks in the top half of the Mountain West in each statistical category except digs (seventh), including first in hitting percentage (.280), opponent hitting percentage (.145) and blocks (3.02 per set), and second in service aces (1.31 per set). It comes as no surprise that the Rams are the conference s best blocking team, and rank sixth nationally, as they have three of the best blockers in the conference in juniors Megan Plourde and Brieon Paige, and senior Katelyn Steffan. Plourde, who holds the conference s best blocking performance when she recorded 11 blocks at New Mexico on Nov. 12, ranks second in the nation with 1.68 blocks per set. Paige ranks ninth in the MW with 0.90 blocks per set, while Steffan is 10th with Steffan, who has led the Rams in kills 16 times this season, ranks second in both kills (3.70 per set) and points (4.43 per set), and is just outside the top 10 in service aces, with 0.23 per set. Her kill and point averages rank 86th and 60th nationally, respectively. Setter Deedra Foss is second in assists and fourth in service aces. Her assists-perset average ranks 56th in the nation. Dana Cranston (0.44 per set; first), Deedra Foss (0.29; fourth) and Izzy Gaulia (0.23; seventh) are in the conference top 10, while Katelyn Steffan (0.23) has appeared on the list throughout the season. Five times Junior Dana Cranston recorded five service aces in CSU s 3-0 win over San Diego State on Oct. 27, marking the first time a CSU player has done so since Jacque Davisson recorded seven against Air Force on Nov. 1, Eleven times As a team, the Rams recorded 11 aces in their win over Wyoming on Nov. 4. It was tied for the second-highest ace total since set lengths were dropped from 30 points to 25 points in 2008, and the most aces by the team in more than three years (11 vs. Air Force on Nov. 1, 2008). Notes (cont.) Colorado State Volleyball Can you dig it? The Rams recorded 96 digs in their Oct. 8 match at Wyoming, sixth-most ever. Dana Cranston (25), Izzy Gaulia (23) and Carlie Foust (20) each recorded 20-plus digs, the first time in nearly five years (Katelin Batten and Katherine Whitney on Nov. 17, 2006 vs. BYU) that at least two players have recorded at least 20 digs in a match. Five players (Cranston, Gaulia, Foust, Foss (13) and Steffan (11)) recorded double-digit dig totals, also doing so for the first time in five years (Oct. 14, 2006 vs. SDSU). On Nov. 4 against Wyoming, the Rams recorded 44 digs in the three-set win, while limiting the Cowgirls to just 19 digs. Sixty Setter Deedra Foss recorded 60 assists in CSU s five-set win over UNLV on Sept. 29, marking the first time in nearly two years that a Ram has recorded that many assists. She followed that performance up with 66 at Wyoming on Oct. 8, the most by a MW member this season. Moby was rockin Moby Arena has always been known as a hostile environment, ranking among the best in national attendance averages each season. On Sept. 2, however, a Mountain West-record 6,750 fans watched CSU upset then-no. 5 Nebraska. The previous record was also held by CSU, when the Rams beat the Duke Blue Devils, Aug. 26, 2010, in front of 6,333 fans. On the season CSU averaged 2,151 fans per game, good for 17th in the nation. CSU s record crowd against Nebraska is the 11-highest figure around the nation this season. Among the top 15 single-match figures in 2011, the CSU-Nebraska match at Moby Arena is one of only four matches that did not take place at Hawaii. The Rams finished the 2010 season ranked 13th nationally in attendance with 2,180 fans per match. Success in Colorado CSU will match up against Air Force on Friday riding a 35-match win streak over the Falcons. In its storied history, CSU s volleyball program has had its way against the other Division I programs in the state, winning 86 of its 106 matches. Against Northern Colorado, who CSU beat on Sept. 10, the Rams are CSU is 14-2 against Denver, and 35-1 against Air Force in addition to holding a mark against Colorado, who did not schedule CSU this season. Adding more hardware With its championship in the Rams Volleyball Classic on Sept. 10, CSU took home its second piece of hardware of the season also sweeping through the Arkansas Invitational, Aug in Fayetteville, Ark. The Rams have excelled in regular-season tournaments, especially on their home court, holding a record of when hosting regular-season tournaments since Get out the brooms With the Rams 3-0 start to the season, it marked the third time in the past four seasons that CSU has begun a season 3-0. However, it was the first time since 1997, Hilbert s first in Fort Collins, that the Rams swept their first three matches. Starting fresh After losing five players from the 2010 roster, including four starters, the Rams entered 2011 with plenty of youth and inexperience. In fact, CSU has the secondmost freshmen on its roster in the Mountain West. The Rams brought in four true freshmen and four redshirt freshmen. Air Force is the only team in the conference with more freshmen on its roster, with 10. After the first few weeks of play, six newcomers had made their collegiate debuts, including opposite hitter Kelsey Snider and Deedra Foss recording starts. First again On Aug. 16, the MW announced the preseason rankings, and again, the Rams were at the top of the list, as CSU was tabbed to win its third consecutive conference title. CSU received five of the eight first-place votes (New Mexico earned the other three) from a panel made up of the eight MW head volleyball coaches. Preseason recognition Junior middle blocker Megan Plourde gained the nation s attention with a recordsetting performance in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season (CSUrecord 19 blocks and 30.5 points; both figures were the best in the MW in 2010). She entered 2011 as the MW Preseason Player of the Year. It marked the fourth straight year that a CSU player has earned the honor. National recognition Despite losing plenty of depth and talent from last year s roster, the Rams, who ranked No. 17 in the final 2010 AVCA Coaches Top-25 Poll, moved up two spots, to No. 15 in the preseason poll. It marked the fourth straight year that CSU opened the

7 season ranked, and the No. 15 ranking marked the highest received by CSU in the preseason poll since being ranked No. 11 to open Representing her native land While most of the student-athletes on CSU s roster and around the country spent their summer conditioning, taking classes or working a part-time job, Rams opposite hitter Dana Cranston was in her homeland, Canada, competing with the Canadian national team. After playing with Canada s B team in 2010, Cranston, a junior, tried out and earned a roster spot on the top team, which will compete to earn a berth in the 2012 Olympics. Together on and off the court With as much time as the players spend together on the court, it should come as no surprise that they are so similar off the court. According to the preseason questionnaire that each player filled out, the music genre of choice among the team is country, with nine of 15 players marking a country artist among their favorites. Rihanna and Beyoncé were runner-ups. Additionally, 14 players on the team selected mint chocolate chip (five) or chocolate chip cookie dough (nine) as their favorite ice cream flavor, and Izzy Gaulia was the overwhelming favorite for funniest teammate. Looking ahead Upon conclusion of the MW championship on Sunday, the Rams will wrap up their regular-season schedule with a road match against New Mexico State, in Las Cruces, N.M. The match will be played at 12 p.m. MT on Nov. 26. CSU holds an record all-time against the Aggies, but New Mexico State stole a victory over the Rams in the final match of the 2009 regular season.
