Tourney time With eight teams in the conference, the MW has brought back the end-of-season tournament for the first time since The three-day tournament will be played Nov , in Albuquerque, N.M. The Rams have won four of the eight prior conference tournament championships, more than any other team, and hold an 18-4 all-time record in the tourney. The winner will receive the conference s automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. Tickets are on sale with the all-session package (seven matches) just $30 ($24 for seniors, $12 for students). About Boise State Thursday s matchup will be the first to take place in Boise for the Rams and Broncos. CSU is 3-0 all-time against Boise State, including last month s 3-0 sweep in Fort Collins. The Broncos sit at overall and 3-4 in MW action entering the week. They will be playing at home for the first time since Oct. 4, a 3-1 loss to Seattle. Overall, Boise State has played just four matches on its home court (1-3). Juniors Liz Harden and Fiona Jones pace the team with 2.54 and 2.46 kills per set, respectively, while senior middle blocker Darlene Nwagbuo is the team s leading blocker with 0.95 blocks per set. As a team, the Broncos sit near the middle of the pack in all statistical categories, with its highest ranking coming in service aces (third; 1.20 per set). Sophomore setter Casey Rose and senior libero Amanda Remy rank second and third in the conference in that category. Brittany Reardon, a redshirt freshman, is the conference leader in attack percentage and 29th nationally hitting at.376. Shay Goulding is in his third season in Boise, where he is About Air Force The Falcons, who boast the nation s youngest team with 93 percent of their roster being freshmen or sophomores, are struggling as of late, dropping 11 consecutive contests, and not winning a single set during that stretch. On the year, Air Force is 3-17 overall and 0-7 in conference action. Air Force ranks second in the conference in service aces (1.28 per set), but last in every other category. Sophomore outside hitter Cami Richan paces the Falcons with 2.89 kills per set (ninth in MW), followed by freshmen Ayesha Hein (2.63) and Victoria Foster (2.27). The Falcons hit.144 as a team and average 1.11 blocks per set, compared to CSU s.282 attack percentage and 2.82 blocks per set. Sophomore Claire Bieber, who averages 1.71 kills per set (fourth on the team), hails from Fort Collins, and was a 2009 graduate of Fossil Ridge High School. Matt McShane, in his second year at the Academy, is Player of the Week For the second time in three weeks, senior outside hitter Katelyn Steffan was named Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week. The Dickinson, N.D., native earned the honor after leading the Rams to a pair of critical conference wins and recording 25 kills in six sets. Steffan also recorded four service aces and hit.396 on the week. Junior middle blocker Megan Plourde, who was selected as the Mountain West Preseason Player of the Year in August, was named the Mountain West Volleyball Player of the Week on Sept. 5, after averaging 1.64 kills, 1.09 blocks, 0.64 digs and 0.09 aces per set, while hitting.295 and accounting for 2.27 points per set on the week. The award was the second of Plourde s career (also Sept. 27, 2010). It s the first time since 2008 that CSU has had three winners in a season. Steffan s two awards also mark the first time in three seasons that a player has won two awards in the same season. Mekena Barnes did so twice in Winning ways Since conference play began on Sept. 22, the Rams have rattled off eight wins in nine tries, including a seasonmost five consecutive between Sept. 22 and Oct. 6. 4 Top of the Mountain In 12 seasons with the MW, CSU has led the charge, winning eight conference championships, including four MW tournament titles in eight seasons. UNLV is the only other current MW team to take home a conference title (tying CSU for first place in 2007). Utah won or shared three titles during its 12 seasons with the conference, while BYU won or shared a pair of championships. 1999: : : 10 Consecutive wins to begin conference play 2002: : : : 14 (undefeated) 2006: : : : : : 4 The Rams opened up conference play with four consecutive wins in conference action, marking the 10th time in 13 years that they have won at least that many matches to begin their conference slate. Starting fast The Rams have won the first set of a match 13 times this season, and the first two on 12 occasions. The match at Wyoming on Oct. 8 marked the first time this season that the Rams have lost after leading 2-0. They are 11-1 overall. Weekend success If the Rams were superstitious, the day of the week would matter. CSU is 7-1 in Saturday matches. The Rams are also perfect on Sundays (1-0) and Thursdays (3-0). Fortunately for the Rams, seven of their final eight regular-season matches fall on a Thursday or Saturday. Best in the West Entering Thursday night s match at Boise State, CSU ranks in the top half of the Mountain West each statistical category except digs (fifth), including first in hitting percentage (.282) and blocks (2.82 per set). It comes as no surprise that the Rams are the conference s best blocking team, and rank 14th nationally, as they have two of the best blockers in the conference in juniors Megan Plourde and Brieon Paige. Plourde, who holds the best single-match block performance when she recorded eight blocks on two occasions, ranks ninth in the nation with 1.49 blocks per set. Paige ranks eighth (sixth in MW matches) with 0.92 blocks per set, while Katelyn Steffan (0.78) is just outside the top 10. Steffan, who has led the Rams in kills 14 times this season, ranks first in both kills (4.12 per set) and points (4.86 per set), and is sixth in service aces with 0.29 per set. Her kill and point averages rank 37th and 24th nationally, respectively. Setter Deedra Foss also is second in assists (first in MW action) and fourth in service aces (0.30 per set). Her assists-per-set average ranks 25th in the nation. Paige and middle blocker Tori Brummett also rank sixth and eighth in attack percentages, while defensive specialist Izzy Gaulia is third (second in MW action) with 4.50 digs per set. In conference matches, Plourde ranks in the top 10 in both hitting percentage (.305; ninth) and points (3.19 per set; 10th). As a team, CSU has the seventh-best hitting percentage in the nation (.282). Steffan it up Senior Katelyn Steffan has led the Rams since the first match of the season, but her game has significantly stepped up since conference play began. In seven conference matches, the team captain is averaging a conference-most 4.72 kills per set on an incredible.369 hitting (third in MW). In addition to a conference-leading 0.36 service aces and 0.76 blocks per set, the opposite hitter is averaging 5.52 points per set and has two of the league s top three kill performances on the season. With at least nine games remaining, Steffan has already surpassed her best kill and point totals for a season, and has led the Rams in kills 14 times. Block party The Rams take pride in their ability to out-block their opponents, and in 2011, it s no different. CSU has recorded more blocks than its opponent in 14 of its 17 matches, going 12-2 in those situations. CSU is also 1-0 when tying with its opponent in blocks. Nationally, the Rams rank 14th in the country with 2.82 blocks per set. Junior Megan Plourde, who averages 1.49 per set, ranks ninth in the country, and finished 2010 ranked second. The Rams have recorded double-digit block totals 10 times this season. Defending the attack The Rams lead the MW with a.312 hitting percentage in conference matches (.282 overall; seventh nationally), but also rank first in opponent hitting percentage in conference matches, allowing their conference opponents to hit just.159 on them. Overall, CSU opponents have hit below.100 four times, and have hit above.250 just once. Notes (cont.) Colorado State Volleyball Out of the polls The Rams fell out of the AVCA Top 25 Coach s Poll last week for the first time since Nov. 2, The Rams were ranked for 26 weeks prior to falling out. In the latest poll, CSU received 56 votes, which was the 27th most. RPI released Coach Hilbert continues to stress the importance of the RPI (Ratings Percentage Index), which is one of the key factors in determining teams for the NCAA tournament. The season s first RPI was released on Monday, with CSU at No. 40. Conference foes TCU (52), Wyoming (90) and New Mexico (96) also were ranked in the top 100. Also in the top 75 were five non-conference opponents: Nebraska (2), Oklahoma (25) and Wichita State (47), Middle Tennessee (49) and Arkansas (75). Can you dig it? The Rams recorded 96 digs in their Oct. 8 match at Wyoming, sixth-most ever. Dana Cranston (25) and Izzy Gaulia (23) and Carlie Foust (20) each recorded 20-plus digs, the first time in nearly five years (Katelin Batten and Katherine Whitney on Nov. 17, 2006 vs. BYU) that at least two players have recorded at least 20 digs in a match. Five players (Cranston, Gaulia, Foust, Foss (13) and Steffan (11)) recorded double-digit kill totals, also doing so for the first time in five years (Oct. 14, 2006 vs. SDSU). Sixty Setter Deedra Foss recorded 60 assists in CSU s five-set win over UNLV on Sept. 29, marking the first time in nearly two years that a Ram has recorded that many assists. She followed that performance up on Saturday with 66 at Wyoming on Oct. 8, the most by a MW member this season. Moby was rockin Moby Arena has always been known as a hostile environment, ranking among the best in national attendance averages each season. On Sept. 2, however, a record 6,750 fans watched CSU upset then-no. 5 Nebraska. The previous record was also held by CSU, when the Rams beat the Duke Blue Devils, Aug. 26, 2010, in front of 6,333 fans. On the season thus far CSU is averaging 2,096 fans per game, good for 16th in the nation. CSU s record crowd against Nebraska is the eighth-highest figure around the nation this season. Among the top 15 single-match figures in 2011, the CSU- Nebraska match at Moby Arena is one of only four matches that did not take place at Hawaii. The Rams finished the 2010 season ranked 13th nationally in attendance with 2,180 fans per match. With big crowds comes big success. Hilbert is (.885) in 14-plus seasons in Fort Collins, including against nationally ranked teams. Success in Colorado The Rams match against Air Force on Sept. 22 was their final of three consecutive against teams from the state of Colorado. In its storied history, CSU s volleyball program has had its way against the other Division I programs in the state, winning 86 of its 106 matches. Against Northern Colorado, who CSU beat on Sept. 10, the Rams are CSU is 14-2 against Denver, and 35-1 against Air Force in addition to holding a mark against Colorado, who did not schedule CSU this season. Adding more hardware With its championship in the Rams Volleyball Classic on Sept. 10, CSU took home its second piece of hardware of the season also sweeping through the Arkansas Invitational, Aug in Fayetteville, Ark. The Rams have had their way in regular-season tournaments, especially on their home court, holding a record of when hosting regular-season tournaments since The 700 club Head Coach Tom Hilbert s win over Albany on Sept. 3 was his 700th match as a Ram, over 300 more than his predecessor, Rich Feller. Hilbert began his 15th season in Fort Collins this year, and during that time, has left his mark on the CSU volleyball program, winning 371 matches (371-94,.798). In 2009, the Rams leader won his 500th career contest, and last season, became the winningest coach in any sport in CSU history. His career winning percentage of.767 ( ) ranks 10th among active coaches, and he has led CSU to 12 conference championships (eight regular-season, four tournament) during his tenure. Back-to-back ranked teams Hilbert knew the first two weeks of the season would be a challenge, facing two ranked teams and four opponents who were in the 2010 NCAA tournament. During the span, the Rams came away with five wins, a pleasant surprise for a team who lost four starters from 2010, and had several returners change positions.

5 Notes (cont.) After facing then-no. 17 Oklahoma and then-no. 5 Nebraska, CSU went head-tohead against ranked teams in consecutive matches for the first time since playing No. 20 BYU and No. 9 Utah in November Get out the brooms With the Rams 3-0 start to the season, it marked the third time in the past four seasons that CSU has begun a season 3-0. However, it was the first time since 1997, Hilbert s first in Fort Collins, that the Rams swept their first three matches. Starting fresh After losing four starters from the 2010 roster, including four starters, the Rams entered 2011 with plenty of youth and inexperience. In fact, CSU has the secondmost freshmen on its roster in the Mountain West. The Rams brought in four true freshmen and four redshirt freshmen. Air Force is the only team in the conference with more freshmen on its roster, with 10. Media guide For all history, facts and information about CSU volleyball, please view the 2011 media guide, which can be found online on CSU s athletic Web site, com. Up next The Rams return home for one of the final times in 2011 to host two more big matches. The week kicks off with a Thursday night match against San Diego State (Oct. 27, 7 p.m.), currently alone in second place behind CSU in the MW standings, followed by a Saturday afternoon match (Oct. 29, 1 p.m.) against the Rebels of UNLV, who CSU beat in five sets last month in Las Vegas. After the first few weeks of play, six of newcomers had made their collegiate debuts, including opposite hitter Kelsey Snider and Deedra Foss recording starts. On the road For the first time in four years, the Rams opened the season on the road. In 2007, CSU competed in the Asics Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii, but the past three years, opened up at Moby. First again On Aug. 16, the MW announced the preseason rankings, and again, the Rams were at the top of the list, as CSU was tabbed to win its third consecutive conference title. CSU received five of the eight first-place votes (New Mexico earned the other three) from a panel made up of the eight MW head volleyball coaches. Preseason recognition Junior middle blocker Megan Plourde gained the nation s attention with a recordsetting performance in the first round of the NCAA tournament last season (CSUrecord 19 blocks and 30.5 points; both figures were the best in the MW in 2010). She entered 2011 as the MW Preseason Player of the Year. It marked the fourth straight year that a CSU player has earned the honor. National recognition Despite losing plenty of depth and talent from last year s roster, the Rams, who ranked No. 17 in the final 2010 AVCA Coaches poll, moved up two spots to No. 15 in the preseason poll. It marked the fourth straight year that CSU opened up the season ranked, and the No. 15 ranking marked the highest received by CSU in the preseason poll since being ranked No. 11 to open Representing her native land While most of the student-athletes on CSU s roster and around the country spent their summer conditioning, taking classes or working a part-time job, Rams opposite hitter Dana Cranston was in her homeland, Canada, competing with the Canadian national team. After playing with Canada s B team in 2010, Cranston, a junior, tried out and earned a roster spot on the top team, which will eventually compete to earn a berth in the 2012 Olympics. Together on and off the court With as much time as the players spend together on the court, it should come as no surprise that they are so similar off the court. According to the preseason questionnaire that each player filled out, the music genre of choice among the team is country, with nine of 15 players marking a country artist among their favorites. Rihanna and Beyoncé were runner-ups. Additionally, 10 players on the team selected mint chocolate chip (five) or chocolate chip cookie dough (nine) as their favorite ice cream flavor, and Izzy Gaulia was the overwhelming favorite for funniest teammate.
