Virginia beat Marshall, James Madison and Montana in a home tournament last week, and was paced by junior outside hitter Tori Janowski, who averaged 5.30 kills per set. True freshman outside hitter Haley Kole provided a nice secondary weapon for Virginia, as she has already accumulated 38 kills (3.80 per set). Virginia will provide a tough challenge for the Rams, as the Cavaliers average an impressive 1.90 service aces per set as a team, in addition to digs per set. Virginia finished 9-22 in 2012 under first-year head coach Dennis Hohenshelt, which was 12th in the ACC. SERIES VS. THE CAVALIERS The Rams and Cavaliers have played just once, a 3-0 CSU victory in last year s season opener at Moby Arena. In that match, Marlee Reynolds had the best match of her career up to that point, with seven kills on.600 hitting. Kelsey Snider led all Rams with nine kills. Leading the Gauchos on offense is senior outside hitter Katey Thompson, who is averaging 3.30 kills per set through one week of action. While Thompson is looked to to finish the play, sophomore setter Hanna Nielson paces the offense with 9.23 assists per set. On defense, the Gauchos are led by a pair of freshmen middle blockers, Phoebe Grunt and Allie Sullberg, who combine to average 1.45 blocks per set. UC Santa Barbara is playing under a new coach in 2013, Nicole Lantagne Welch. The Gauchos when in SERIES VS. THE GAUCHOS The Rams are 1-3 all-time against UC Santa Barbara including 0-3 against the Gauchos on neutral courts, all in the 1980s but Head Coach Tom Hilbert was victorious in his only matchup against UC Santa Barbara, a 3-0 victory at Moby Arena in During that match, CSU was ranked No. 7, while UC Santa Barbara was 13th. SCOUTING PEPPERDINE Pepperdine enters its second consecutive home tournament with a 2-1 record, defeating Delaware and Iona in straight sets before falling in five to Wisconsin last weekend. Sophomore outside hitting Taylor Rachich leads the Waves with 3.50 kills per set on.280 hitting. Pepperdine relies heavily on tough defense, and scores several points off of the ability to keep points alive. The Waves average digs per set, with freshman defensive specialist averaging 4.00 digs per set, which Rachich is second on the team with 3.30 digs per set. At the net, junior middle blocker Samantha Cash leads the team with 0.90 blocks per set. The Waves went in 2012, advancing to the NCAA tournament. SERIES VS. THE WAVES The Rams and Waves have met 11 times in all, with CSU claiming the win five times, including the most recent matchup, in In that match, CSU, which was just 4-3 on the year at that point, swept No. 12 Pepperdine to earn its marquee match of the year. Kelsey Snider finished that match with nine kills, while Deedra Foss registered 35 assists and seven Facebook digs. The Rams, though, have struggled playing in Malibu, Facebook.com/CSUvolleyball falling in straight sets in both matches, with the most recent Facebook.com/CSURams one taking place in 2005 when the Rams were ranked No. #PointRams #CSUvb #CSURams #ncaavb instagram CSUvolleyball CSUathletics youtube ColoradoStateUniv

4 2013 MATCH NOTES 4 MOBY ARENA THE GREATEST VOLLEYBALL VENUE IN AMERICA Head Coach Tom Hilbert doesn t shy away when talking about Moby Arena, the home court for the Colorado State volleyball program, calling it the greatest volleyball venue in America. It is one of the most distinctive and effective home-court playing facilities in the nation. Thanks to its dedicated fans, Moby Arena is home to crowds and winning percentages matched by few programs across the country. HOME COOKING The Rams have had a tremendous amount of success at Moby Arena, winning nearly 90 percent of their matches under Hilbert. Since 1997, Hilbert s first season in Fort Collins, CSU has gone (.891). Looking back even further, to 1995, CSU has won at least 10 home matches each season, including 15 of 16 in Its.938 winning percentage tied for sixth in program history, and the best since The Rams only loss in 2012 was a five-set thriller to No. 2 UCLA, the 2011 national champions. STREAKING AT HOME Between September 1998 and November 2000, CSU won an impressive 44 consecutive home matches, a Moby Arena record. Since then, the Rams have pieced together streaks of 21, 20 and 16, which spanned a calendar year through the beginning of the 2012 season (fifthlongest in program history). Best Home Winning Percentages (18-0) (15-0) (14-0) (14-0) (18-1) (15-1) (15-1) (15-1) (14-1) (11-1) 2011 Most Consecutive Home Wins /18/98-11/18/00 9/27/07-11/16/08 12/1/00-9/5/02 9/11/85-9/13/86 9/10/11-9/912 After three wins during the 2013 season s opening week, CSU has now won 27 of its last 28 home matches, including 11 straight. MOBY WAS ROCKIN On Sept. 15, the Rams welcomed UCLA the No. 2 team in the country to Fort Collins, and came within a few points of the biggest win in Moby Arena history. A total of 5,641 fans witnessed the near-upset, which ranked as the fourth-largest crowd in program history. Just three schools (Hawai I, Nebraska and Wichita State) had larger single-match crowds in In all, three of CSU s top-four single-match attendance figures have occurred in the last three years. On Sept. 2, 2011, a MW-record 6,750 fans watched CSU come from behind to knock off No. 5 Nebraska. The conference s previous record was also held by CSU, when the Rams beat the Duke Blue Devils Aug. 26, 2010 in front of 6,333 fans. MOBY MADNESS CSU has ranked high in annual attendance figures year-in and year-out. In fact, the Rams have been ranked in the top-25 for attendance each season since the NCAA began calculating figures in 1986, including the top-10 on seven occasions and No. 1 in Opponent Nebraska Duke BYU UCLA BYU Wyoming BYU BYU Nebraska Stanford Top 10 Home Crowds Attendance 6,750 6,333 6,260 5,641 5,486 5,389 5,317 5,307 5,087 4,329 year result W, 3-2 W, 3-1 L, 0-3 L, 2-3 W, 3-0 W, 3-1 W, 3-1 w, 3-0 W, 3-1 L, 1-3 In 2012, CSU averaged 2,159 fans per contest, which ranked 17th-best in the nation. Just three schools had larger single-match crowds than CSU s mark of 5,641 on Sept. 15 vs. UCLA. Through two matches in 2013, CSU is averaging 2,978 fans per contest. TAKING DOWN THE BEST With large crowds come big wins. At home since 1987, the Rams have defeated nine teams ranked in the top 10, plus dozens of other wins against ranked opponents. During Hilbert s tenure, the Rams have hosted 37 nationally ranked opponents, coming away with victories in 25 of those contests, including seven of the last nine dating back to CSU s most recent win over a ranked foe at Moby Arena was on Sept. 7, 2012, when CSU upset No. 12 Pepperdine in straight sets. MOUNTAIN WEST DOMINATION The Rams have dominated the Mountain West since its inception, at home and on the road. One of the most impressive stats, however, is CSU s home winning streak against current members of the MW, which dates back to Nov. 4, 2005, a span of 45 straight matches. CSU will look to extend that streak in its MW opener vs. Wyoming on Sept. 18 THE BIG STAGE Because of the environment Moby Arena s fans create, CSU has been an NCAA tournament host 11 seasons, most recently in Included in that figure is 2008, when CSU was a Regional Finals host. Being selected to play in front of its home crowd is important to CSU; the Rams are 13-2 in NCAA tournament matches at Moby Arena.

5 2013 MATCH NOTES 5 STARTING HOT Also with the win over the Bears, CSU improved to 3-0 on the season. It marks the fourth straight year that the Rams have begun with at least three consecutive wins. If the Rams can rattle of wins over Virginia and UC Santa Barbara, they will begin the season 5-0 for just the sixth time in program history. The Rams last accomplished that feat in 2010, winning their initial five matches en route to a 25-6 season. In 2001, CSU won its first 20 contests before suffering its first defeat, to No. 15 Utah on Nov. 3. That year, the Rams completed the season 29-4 and ranked No. 10 in the year s final poll. HOW SWEEP IT IS Not only have the Rams won their first three matches, but all three victories to start the 2013 campaign have come via a sweep. CSU has started a season with nine straight set wins just five other times, including in 2011 and Each of those two seasons, CSU has fallen in its next set, but if the Rams can win Set 1 vs. Virginia on Friday, it ll match the second-longest set winning streak to begin a season in program history. ON THE ROAD The Rams will hit the road this weekend for the first time in 2013, and while they began the 2012 season 0-5 from Moby Arena, they bounced back, to win six of their final eight Wins to Start Season Wins year Consecutive Sets Won to Start Season Sets year road or neutral-site competitions. In fact, CSU is currently riding a five-match road winning streak, which it will put to test Saturday at Pepperdine. On a neutral court, however, CSU went 0-3 in 2012, which is interesting considering entering the year the Rams had been victorious in 15 straight neutral-site contests, a streak which dated back to Sept. 5, 2008, and included impressive NCAA tournament victories against two ranked foes. I feel confident with this team because we all play a lot harder this year, and we have better team chemistry, junior setter Deedra Foss said. Going out on the road will really test us and show us where we need to get better, but I feel confident with my team. The team s five-match road winning streak is the longest since CSU also won five consecutive true road matches in TOURNAMENT SUCCESS CSU has been exceptional in regular-season tournaments over the years. In fact, dating back to midway through the 2009 season, CSU has won 24 of its last 29 tournament matches, including first-place finishes in eight of the 10 tourneys. Taking away last year s 0-3 mark in the Shocker Classic, CSU is LAWRENCE LIGHTING IT UP True freshman Michelle Lawrence is quickly becoming a fan favorite. After an eight-kill,.438 hitting performance in her collegiate debut, Lawrence led all players with 16 kills on.519 hitting in a three-set win over Northern Colorado on Tuesday. She also added five blocks, totaling 19.0 points the kills and points totals are season bests for the Rams. To put the numbers in comparison, Lawrence s 16 kills was the most by a CSU true freshman since Tess Rogers tallied 23 vs. San Diego State in On the court, I don t feel the nervousness that I felt in the first 15 points against Baylor, Lawrence said. I feel more of a calmness, and that has to do with my teammates also because they re all composed and under control, which leads me to be composed and under control as well MOUNTAIN WEST STANDINGS Conference Overall Team (rank) W-L Pct. 6 2013 MATCH NOTES 6 Added Hilbert: Michelle Lawrence had an unbelievably good match for a true freshman out there playing. She was getting sets that I thought were good tempos for her. She also managed her out-ofsystem game very, very well. I thought she did a really good job of picking shots and managing her game. PERFECT IN COLORADO With a win over Northern Colorado on Tuesday, Head Coach Tom Hilbert improved to 40-0 at home against teams from the Centennial State Air Force, Colorado, Denver and Northern Colorado. CSU s last home loss to a team from Colorado came in 1995 against the Colorado Buffaloes. In all, CSU has taken 92 of its 112 (.821) all-time matches against teams from its own state, including a 52-5 record (.912) at home. CSU s next home contest against a Colorado team will come on Nov. 15, vs. Air Force. The Rams also travel to Denver (this upcoming Tuesday, Sept. 10) and Air Force (Sept. 26). THREE S COMPANY After CSU s victory over Northern Colorado on Tuesday, Head Coach Tom Hilbert praised his team for how well they played defensively. While his focus has been on defense and serving, the Rams offense hasn t been too shabby, either. Through three matches, three different Rams are averaging at least 3.00 kills per set, which shows how well setter Deedra Foss is distributing the ball. Three of the MW s top-five hitting performances came from CSU players (Kelsey Snider,.571, first; Marlee Reynolds,.524, fourth; and Michelle Lawrence,.519, fifth). Additionally, Lawrence s 16-kill performance vs. Northern Colorado was tied for the best three-set performance on the season, and Foss 39 assists vs. Baylor is the most in a three-set match. Samantha Peters six blocks vs. Cal Poly ranks second among three-set matches this season. As a team, CSU s three match hitting percentages all rank in the top-10, with its.529 mark vs. Baylor the top spot. ANSWERING THE OUTSIDE QUESTIONS The biggest question entering fall camp and even after it was who would step up on the outside. Hilbert may have found his answer after just one match, with junior Marlee Reynolds playing the O1 spot, and true freshman Michelle Lawrence coming in off the bench to have a marquee debut. Reynolds finished with a team-high 13 kills on.524 hitting, while Lawrence had eight kills on.438 efficiency. Between the two attackers, they committed just three errors on 37 swings. After the match, Hilbert commented, I m really happy about this young lady right here (Reynolds), because she asserted herself physically today and played with a lot of presence on the court. About Lawrence, Hilbert said, She is physical. She is Dana (Cranston) in terms of her ability and stature. She just has to become a better player in terms of experience. Both showed signs of inconsistency the following night, vs. Cal Poly, but they finished strong to put up respectable numbers. FILLING OUT THE STARTING LINEUP Entering Friday s season opener, Hilbert commented that only Jaime Colaizzi, Adrianna Culbert, Deedra Foss and Samantha Peters had locked up starting positions. That left the primary outside hitter, a middle blocker and a defensive specialist spot up for grabs. Those spots were filled by Marlee Reynolds, Kelsey Snider and Michelle Smith, respectively, and each have shown why they earned their spots. The Rams have used the same starting lineup for all three matches this season. Also seeing significant time in the season s opening week has been outside hitter Michelle Lawrence and defensive specialist Kaitlind Bestgen. Sophomore Kaila Thomas played in two sets vs. Cal Poly, while Acacia Andrews and Cassidy Denny each made their collegiate debuts against Baylor. HOME-OPENING SUCCESS With a resounding home-opening win vs. Baylor last Friday, CSU improved to 13-4 under Head Coach Tom Hilbert in home openers, including winners of six of the last seven. It marked the fourth straight year that the season opener regardless of location has come via a sweep. SECOND IN THE MOUNTAIN WEST Despite losing four seniors from last year s Mountain West championship squad, the Rams were still picked to finish second in the MW in CSU earned 90 total points, only behind preseason favorite San Diego State (99). The Aztecs earned nine of the 11 first-place votes, while CSU earned the two others. The full preseason poll can be found on Page 3. It marked the first time since 2009 that CSU was not been the favorite to win the league. Hilbert, though, doesn t believe the expectations will be any less. With our history, we bring out the best in every team, and it may be even more so this year because they re going to see our vulnerabilities, Hilbert said. Our team has to step up and, I think, win our home games and at least half of our road games if we re going to win the conference. That will be challenging. The Rams remain confident they can reach their goal of a fifth straight conference title, however, and history backs them up. Of the eight times CSU has not been the favorite to win the league, the team has ended up being crowned champions five times. In 15 years, CSU has never been picked to finish lower than third, and each season, the Rams have earned at least one first-place vote. Junior Deedra Foss was one of seven players named to the All-MW Preseason Team. The setter was an All-MW selection a year ago after leading the conference in assists per set in conference action. GAINING NATIONAL RECOGNITION CSU has earned the respect of its peers over the years, and that was evident in early August when the Rams received 15 points in the AVCA Division I Coaches 2013 Preseason Poll, despite losing the majority of its production from last year. The 15 points was good for 38th in the nation. Since Hilbert s arrival in Fort Collins in 1997, CSU has been ranked or receiving votes in the preseason poll every season. After two opening-weekend victories, the Rams moved up seven spots, earning 50 total points. Texas A&M (39th) and Pepperdine (40th) also were receiving votes. San Diego State dropped out after receiving six votes in the preseason poll. The Rams have been ranked in the final season s poll 15 times in 31 years (tied for 15th in the NCAA), in addition to being ranked in 235 of the 447 all-time weekly polls (15th). The Rams highest national rank was No. 3, which was held for five weeks in TOP-100 rpi STRONG SCHEDULE Hilbert and the Rams have once again pieced together a challenging schedule, including 15 home matches. In all, four teams played in last year s NCAA tournament, including Northern Colorado (W, 3-0) Pepperdine (Saturday), Texas A&M (Sept. 21) and San Diego State (Oct. 19 and Nov. 27). Of CSU s 19 opponents, 10 ranked in the top-100 RPI last season, including five of the Rams 10 Mountain West opponents, which they will each play twice. 17. Texas A&M 38. Pepperdine 35. The Rams are one of eight teams nationally to be ranked in the top-50 RPI every season since the index was created in SETTING THE WAY All-MW Preseason Team selection Deedra Foss returns to help pace the Rams offense after two stellar seasons already under her belt, and in the early going, she hasn t disappointed, already totaling more than 110 assists. The junior setter from McKenna, Wash., averaged assists per set, while also helping pace the defense with 2.20 digs and 0.86 blocks per set in Posting those numbers, she ranked in the top three on the team in each category, becoming just the fifth player in CSU history to finish a season in the top three in assists, digs and blocks. After being named the Mountain West Newcomer of the Year in 2011, Foss was selected to the All-MW team as a sophomore. She already ranks ninth in school history with 2,368 career assists, and is on pace to move up to sixth all-time by the end of the 2013 campaign. Foss is also just the eighth player in program history to register at least 1,100 assists in back-to-back seasons. Furthermore, she is one of six players to record at least 1,100 assists, 225 digs and 145 points in a single season. If she can accomplish this again, she will join Analisa Saylor as the only two players to do this in three different seasons. In her first two seasons, Foss has averaged at least assists, 2.10 digs and 0.85 blocks per set, putting her in rare company. Ashley Fornstrom is the only other player to accomplish this feat, and if Foss is able to reach these numbers again, it will be a program first. EYEING A FIVE-PEAT Colorado State closed 2012 by winning its final eight regular-season matches, and on the last night of the season, in front of a home crowd, CSU defeated New Mexico to earn a share of the Mountain West regular-season title. CSU earned the automatic bid to the NCAA tournament after winning the tiebreaker over San Diego State, which also finished 13-3 in league play in It marked the fourth consecutive season that CSU has won the MW title. The Rams will look to embark upon uncharted territories in Just one other time ( ) has CSU won at least five consecutive regular-season titles. Entering 2013, just three other schools have won their respective conference title in each of the last four seasons (Albany, 5, America East; Dayton, 4, Atlantic 10; and Hawai i, 18, Big West in 1995 and 2012, WAC from ). ON TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN In 14 seasons with the Mountain West, CSU has led the charge by a large margin, winning 10 regular-season conference championships in addition to five MW tournament titles in nine seasons. CSU has finished first in the regular-season standings each of the past four years, leading wire-to-wire from All-time, the Rams have won more than 85 percent of their MW matches (179-31,.852 COMPOSiTE MW STANDiNGS Team W-L Pct. The figure is more than all other MW teams past and current combined. The Rams are (.854) all-time against MW opponents. They also won two HCAC championships in the 1980s, plus the WAC Mountain Division title in 1998, giving them 18 overall conference championships to their credit, more than any other sport at CSU.

8 2013 MATCH NOTES 8 INTERNATIONAL FLAIR Just one year after the entire team took a foreign tour to Italy and France, CSU volleyball has continued its trend of playing internationally. Over the summer, Kelsey Snider played on the USA/BIP Global Challenge team, which traveled to China to compete in six international matches. Samantha Peters was also on the roster, but was forced to opt out after a back injury the day before departing from California. In May, Deedra Foss was selected to the USA Volleyball Women s National Team A2 program, and midway through the summer, she competed in Dallas, Texas, earning a silver medal. She was coached by Andy Banachowski, a six-time national champion and the winningest coach in NCAA history. What s more, three 2012 seniors are now playing professionally Dana Cranston (Canadian National Team, professionally in France), Brieon Paige (Romania) and Megan Plourde (Croatia, Switzerland) in addition to 2001 senior Soraya Santos, who began her 12th season of professional volleyball this fall in Spain. TRENDING The Rams saw several trends in 2012, and while the lineup on the court will look significantly different this fall, here are a couple stats to watch for: The Rams knew if they could jump out to an early lead they were in good shape. In fact, CSU was 17-2 when winning the first set, and 16-1 when entering the intermission up 2-0. Under Hilbert, CSU is (.913) when winning the initial set, and (.988) when leading 2-0. CSU outblocked its opponents in 23 of its 29 matches in 2012, going 19-4 in those contests. As a team, the Rams ranked No. 15 nationally with 2.85 blocks per set. The Rams have been ranked in the top-15 in blocking each year since The Rams hit.294 in MW action in 2012, which led the league. The team s.266 overall hitting percentage was good for 17th in the country. While the Rams led the league in hitting, they also ranked high in opponent hitting percentage (.155; second in MW action). In six of the team s final nine MW victories, its opponents hit under.140, including a season-best against Wyoming. AVOIDING THE SWEEP CSU played 28 regular-season matches in In those contests, the Rams swept their opponents 15 times, but were never swept. It marked the second time (also 1999) that the Rams have gone through the entire regular season without being swept. After three sweeps to begin the 2013 season, CSU has now gone 52 regular-season contests without being swept, second-longest in program history. The quartet left as some of the most accomplished athletes in program history, becoming four of just seven athletes in Colorado State athletics history to win four consecutive conference championships. The group included: Dana Cranston - AVCA All-American, MW Player of the Year, Capital One Academic All-American Izzy Gaulia - fourth in CSU history with 1,164 career digs Brieon Paige - AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, All-MW, first in MW matches with.391 hitting percentage Megan Plourde - AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, four-time All-MW, second in CSU history for career blocks Additionally, CSU lost Anastassia Koutchouk, who played sparingly as a server in Koutchouk opted to move back to her native country of France HIGHLIGHTS Losing just two starters from the 2011 team which advanced to the NCAA Regional Quarterfinals, CSU brought back an experienced and senior-laden team for its 2012 campaign. The four seniors helped lead the Rams to 21 wins the program s 18thconsecutive 20-win season and a fourth straight Mountain West championship. The Rams then advanced to their 18th straight NCAA tournament, getting key production from freshmen returners Jaime Colaizzi and Adrianna Culbert. Other season notables: The Rams earned two tournament championships (Rocky Mountain Invite and Rams Volleyball Classic), CSU s fifth and sixth consecutive home tournament titles. CSU swept No. 12 Pepperdine on Sept. 7 at Moby Arena. The program s fourth-largest crowd (5,641) was on hand to witness CSU battle against No. 2 UCLA, the defending national champions. CSU played one of the most challenging schedules in the country, with eight of its non-conference opponents advancing to the NCAA tournament, in addition to MW foe San Diego State. CSU s final RPI was No. 35. The Rams began the season ranked No. 25 nationally, and moved up to No. 24 after the opening week. On Nov. 13, Head Coach Tom Hilbert won his 400th career match at CSU, expanding on his program record. MOUNTAIN WEST NETWORK For several years, fans of Rams volleyball have been able to follow along near and far through an All-Access subscription. Even better this year, through the brand-new Mountain West Network, fans will now be able to watch the Rams worldwide for free. Every home match will be streamed through the Network, in addition to all conference road matches. Streaming links can be found on the volleyball schedule page on www. CSURams.com. For home matches, the streams will include multiple camera angles, instant replay, an audio feed to the radio commentary and more. HILBERT S HAPPY HOUR For an even deeper look inside CSU volleyball, fans are encouraged to attend Hilbert s Happy Hour, a weekly show in the upstairs room of C.B. & Potts (1415 W. Elizabeth), from 5-6 each Tuesday. The hour-long get-together allows the veteran coach to review the week prior, preview the week ahead, answer questions and give a brief chalk talk where he explains a certain aspect of the sport of volleyball to his fans. Each week, Hilbert also brings a player guest with him. Food and drink specials are also available. Hilbert s group will not meet this upcoming Tuesday, Sept. 10 because the Rams have a match at Denver. It will resume on Sept. 17, and run throughout the remainder of the season. UP NEXT CSU will play back-to-back matches, facing Jesse Mahoney s Denver Pioneers on Tuesday (Sept. 10) in Denver, followed by a home contest vs. Missouri State on Wednesday (Sept. 11). While the Rams hold a 15-2 mark against the Pioneers, Denver beat CSU the last time the two teams met in Hamilton Gymnasium. The Bears rank No. 5 in NCAA history for total wins.

9 2013 MATCH NOTES 9 to the middle for the upcoming season, showed hints of greatness last year (15 kills vs. No. 2 UCLA), but was inconsistent, averaging 1.76 kills and 2.05 point per set on the season. Over the summer, she traveled to China to compete in the BIP/USA Global Challenge. NEW FACES A trio of three freshmen, ranked by as an honorable mention, will join the Rams lineup this fall. Additionally, CSU adds transfer Cayla Broadwater. Jaliyah Bolden A three-year letterwinner at Sachse High School, Bolden helped lead her team to an Elite Eight appearance in the Texas state tournament; is expected to redshirt. Cayla Broadwater - three-year letterwinner at Connecticut, starting 22 matches over three seasons and averaging 1.49 kills and 0.55 blocks per set. Transferred to CSU and competed on the Rams track team in the high jump in Cassidy Denny A three-year letterwinner at El Camino Fundamental High School, Denny earned All-Capital Athletic League honors all three years and was named team MVP during as a senior. Michelle Lawrence Was a three-year letterwinner at Northgate High School, where she was a three-time first-team All-Diablo Valley Athletic League selection. She was named league MVP as a junior and senior; is expected to see time on the left side. SEASON PrEViEW Though Tom Hilbert and the Colorado State women s volleyball team are going through one of the most formidable roster transitions in recent memory, the veteran head coach doesn t expect much to change both from internal expectations and from those externally. While the Rams were picked to finish second to San Diego State in the annual Mountain West preseason poll a league they ve dominated since its inception, winning 10 regular-season titles in 14 years and more than 85 percent of their all-time matches Hilbert expects the bull s eye to remain on the Rams backs. Because of our history and tradition, every time we play someone we will still get their A game every time, he said. They ll probably be salivating even more, knowing they might have a chance to beat us. The Rams have won four consecutive MW titles, and last year went 21-8 en route to the program s 18th consecutive NCAA tournament appearance, a streak that ranks seventh nationally. However, the team graduated four senior starters which made up the bulk of the offense, defense and leadership. Because of this, some new faces will be forced to step up, led by junior Deedra Foss and senior Samantha Peters, as well as sophomores Jaime Colaizzi and Adrianna Culbert. Foss has the pedigree, earning MW Newcomer of the Year honors in 2011 before becoming an All-MW member a year ago and an All-MW Preseason Team selection this fall. She already ranks ninth in CSU history for career assists, and over the summer earned a silver medal with the USA Volleyball A2 program, coached by the winningest coach in NCAA women s volleyball history, Andy Banachowski. The others, on the other hand, are more of an unknown commodity. Deedra is great, Hilbert said prior to fall camp. She s been great these past two years, but getting to see her play with the A2 program in Dallas, I realized how much of a leader she can be. Jaime is also very good. I see absolutely no issues with her sliding into the libero spot, and allowing that to be a strength of ours. FiLLiNG THE HOLES While Hilbert feels good about the setter and libero positions, there remains plenty of unanswered questions. We have to find out who s going to play on the right, who s going to play on the left, he said. There s been a ton of competition in camp, which always makes better players, but in order for us to be successful this season, we need a couple impact players to emerge. After a strong fall camp, Hilbert says Culbert will start at some place on the court because of her versatility, preferably on the right side. Marlee Reynolds, Kaila Thomas and freshman Michelle Lawrence have been battling on the left side, with each showing strengths. Reynolds emerged late as the favorite, but prior to the first match, Hilbert wasn t ready to annoint her the team s starting outside hitter. CSU will look to a trio of players in Peters, Snider and redshirt freshman Acacia Andrews to play in the middle, filling the void of graduating seniors Brieon Paige and Megan Plourde both are now playing professionally in Europe one of the most recognizable middle-blocking combinations in the nation. Peters made a strong statement during spring camp, stepping up as a team leader and one of the top players on the squad, unofficially hitting better than.400 in three spring tournaments. She was hampered by an ongoing back injury last season, playing in just 13 matches, but Hilbert has confidence that she will make big things out of her senior season. Additionally, Snider, who moved from the outside returning TO THE COUrT While somewhat inexperienced, CSU has a talented group of returning players in 2013, including three starters from last year s 21-win team. Additionally, CSU will return several players who played significant roles in the rotation a year ago. Kaitlind Bestgen Appeared in 13 matches, used primarily as a server. She recorded four aces, including back-to-back aces against New Mexico on Nov. 23. Jaime Colaizzi Started every match she appeared in as a true freshman, ranking fifth on the team with 1.99 digs per set and tallying nine service aces. Adrianna Culbert As a true freshman, appeared in 91 of the Rams 104 sets, starting 25 matches. She finished the year with 2.41 digs per set, ranking third all-time among freshmen in CSU history. Deedra Foss Named to the All-Mountain West team after finishing first in MW matches with assists per set. She currently ranks ninth all-time in CSU history for career assists. Samantha Peters Averaged 0.64 digs and 0.56 points per set in 13 matches, missing significant time with a recurring back injury. She recorded four kills on eight attacks against FIU (Sept. 8). Marlee reynolds Saw action in 20 matches, averaging 0.46 kills and 0.69 points per set. In the season opener against Virginia (Aug. 24), she led all Rams with seven kills on.600 hitting. Michelle Smith Appeared in 43 sets, including two starts. She averaged 1.00 digs per set, including 11 vs. Oklahoma (Sept. 2). Kelsey Snider Saw action in 80 sets for the Rams, averaging 1.76 kills and 2.05 points per set, including a career-most 15 vs. No. 2 UCLA (Sept. 15). She will move from outside hitter to middle blocker this fall. Kaila Thomas Appeared in 54 sets for the Rams, registering 1.46 kills and 1.69 points per set. During a four-match winning streak (Oct. 27-Nov. 10), she averaged 8.0 kills on.275 hitting.

10 2013 MATCH NOTES 10 THIS IS CSU VOLLEYBALL NCAA TOURNAMENT HISTORY The Colorado State volleyball program began in 1976, and since has been synonymous with winning and success, averaging nearly 21 wins per season and posting an all-time record of (.671 winning percentage). In what many have been calling a rebuilding year for Colorado State s volleyball program, the Rams kicked off the 2013 campaign in emphatic fashion, sweeping the Baylor Bears 25-12, 25-11, Friday night at Moby Arena. The first match of the year with a team as inexperienced as this one is, you couldn t have asked for a better overall performance, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. We stayed playing at a very high level throughout all three sets, and that is a mark of a very good team. The Bears had no match for the Rams outside hitting as Colorado State racked up 53 kills in the match on.529 hitting. The hitting percentage was the fifth-best in program history, and the highest since hitting.534 vs. BYU on Oct. 6, The Rams also committed just seven attack errors, the fewest in four seasons. Junior outside hitter Marlee Reynolds, who has stepped into the left-side outside hitter role left vacated by Dana Cranston, led the way for the Rams with 13 kills on.524 hitting. The 13 kills nearly doubled Reynolds previous career best (7), which was set in last year s opener, vs. Virginia (Aug. 24). I m really happy with Marlee because she asserted herself physically today, Hilbert said. If she has this kind of attitude every match she s going to do the right things. Also in double figures for the Rams was sophomore outside hitter Adrianna Culbert who finished the match with 11 kills, and junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider who notched 10 kills. Junior setter Deedra Foss helped pave the way for her attackers with 39 assists, in addition to a team-high 10 digs. Sophomore Jaime Colaizzi finished with nine digs, while Kaitlind Bestgen and Culbert each had six. The Rams also got a key contribution from freshman outside hitter Michelle Lawrence who posted eight kills on.438 hitting in her first collegiate match and earned the praises of her coach. She is physical, Hilbert said of his freshman outside hitter. She is Dana (Cranston) in terms of her ability and stature. She just has to become a better player in terms of experience. CSU utilized a strong serving game as well as really tough defense in the match to help the team gain separation from Baylor in each set. We served very well, and I knew that would be a weapon for us, Hilbert said. We were serving tough and that is a very important weapon, and it s going to be one for us for the whole year. For the match, Baylor recorded just 23 kills and had 17 attack errors as the Rams limited the Bears attack to.071 hitting. The right-back defenders today were better than I ve seen in many, many years, Hilbert said. I m happy about it, and I want to challenge these guys to play that well every time they go out on the court. The Colorado State Rams continued its excellence at home, taking down the Cal Poly Mustangs in three sets (25-19, 25-22, 25-16) on Saturday night at Moby Arena. I m very pleased with where this team is right now, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. We are better defensively than we ve been in a while, and we are a great serving team. We re getting to be really solid on the outside at times. Junior middle blocker Kelsey Snider helped pave the way for the Rams with 13 kills on.571 hitting. The match marked the second consecutive match that the new middle blocker hit above.500 with double-digit kills. Deedra (Foss) and I are starting to connect really well and I m starting to see more things, which is awesome, Snider said. The way I m built and the way I see things works better for me as a middle than they did on the outside. While Snider put the pressure on the Mustangs from the middle, sophomore outside hitter Adrianna Culbert provided a nice secondary punch for the Rams with 11 kills and six digs on.474 hitting. Freshman outside hitter Michelle Lawrence was third on the team with six kills. Foss helped anchor the Rams offense and defense, but fell just short of her second double-double of the year with 34 assists and nine digs. Michelle Smith and Jaime Colaizzi each had eight digs in the match for CSU, which limited Cal Poly to.178 hitting. This was the second match this year that CSU s opponent has hit below.200. The Rams also dictated play at the net, out-blocking the Mustangs, Senior middle blocker Samantha Peters led the way for CSU with six blocks, while Culbert and Snider each had three. CSU jumped out to early control of the match behind Culbert s strong play in the first set, but found itself in a tight match in the second frame with either team unable to get separation. The two teams played in see-saw fashion, exchanging leads and ties until finally the Rams were able to break through late and end the set on a 4-0 run to win, The crucial set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes. I thought we competed well at the end, Hilbert said of Set 2. Those are the moments that we have to do well in; this was a good effort. The third set featured just four ties and zero lead changes as the Rams used an 8-2 run midway through the set to take control and close out the match.

The Colorado State Rams swept intra-state rival Northern Colorado in convincing fashion Tuesday night in front of a crowd of 2,116 at Moby Arena (25-23, 25-12, 25-13). The win marks the fourth consecutive year that the Rams have begun a season 3-0, and improves the team s home winning streak to 11 matches. This was an interesting match, Head Coach Tom Hilbert said. I don t think anybody out here is a superstar and goes out there thinking that this is going to be our go-to player, like Dana (Cranston) was last year. We just wait and see what happens and certain people emerge under that role in a particular match. Tonight it was Michelle. True freshman Michelle Lawrence had the best game of her young career, leading CSU with 16 kills on.519 hitting, while also registering a career-high five blocks in the match. The kill figure was the most by a Rams true freshman since Tess Rogers in On the court, I don t feel the nervousness that I felt in the first 15 points against Baylor, Lawrence said. I feel more of a calmness, and that has to do with my teammates also because they re all composed and under control, which leads me to be composed and under control as well. Sophomore outside hitter Adrianna Culbert was the only other Ram to record double-digit kills in the match. With 10 kills and 10 digs, Culbert posted her first career double-double. After beginning the match shaky (two kills and four errors on her first eight swings), Culbert responded with eight kills and no errors on her final 10 attempts. Junior setter Deedra Foss notched her second double-double of the season with 37 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore libero recorded a season-high 12 digs to help anchor the CSU defense, which held its opponent to under.100 hitting for the second time already this year. In the first set, the Rams faced its largest deficit of the year, trailing the Bears, CSU responded to the early adversity, using a 7-1 run to take a 13-7 lead. From there, the Rams did just enough to hang on and take the set, 25-23, after being tied as late as The second set went much easier for CSU, as the Rams held UNC to hitting en route to a victory. After posting a poor hitting percentage in the first set, Culbert found her groove in the second set, leading the Rams with six kills on just seven attacks in the set. 17 2013 MATCH NOTES 17 The Colorado State women s volleyball program has become synonymous with consistent winning under the guidance and tutelage of Head Coach Tom Hilbert, who is in his 17th season with the Rams and his 25th overall as a collegiate head coach. With eight Mountain West Coach of the Year awards to his credit in the league s 14-year existence, it is clear why Hilbert s program has risen to the top of the MW and has become a stalwart on the national stage as a perennial top-25 team. Under Hilbert, who was inducted into the CSU Athletics Hall of Fame as the Hall of Honor recipient in 2006, the Rams have developed into one of the top programs in the nation, qualifying for the NCAA tournament all 16 seasons. Overall, CSU has played in 18 straight tournaments, which ranks seventh nationally among active streaks entering the 2013 season. The stretch also includes five Sweet 16 appearances and 13 first-round wins. Hilbert ranks 10th among active Division I head coaches (15th all-time) in winning percentage (.767), and 19th in total wins (580). Of those ranked in the top 20, Hilbert has coached the fewest total matches. He owns a career record of Just seven active coaches have recorded more than 500 victories while holding a winning percentage above.750, with Hilbert being one of them. On Nov. 4, 2010, he became the winningest coach in any sport in CSU history, earning a victory over UNLV, his 353rd in Fort Collins. The win surpassed former men s basketball coach Jim Williams mark of 352 victories. A year prior, Hilbert eclipsed the 500-win mark for his career. At the time, he was one of just two active coaches with more HiLBErT AT A GLANCE than 500 victories and fewer than 22 years of head coaching experience. The 15 total titles is more than all other MW teams past and present combined. CSU is in MW action under Hilbert, never finishing lower than third. What s more, in 1998, CSU s final season in the WAC, the Rams won the Mountain Division. Of those who have played four seasons at CSU under Hilbert, every single one has won at least two conference titles, with all but three winning three or more. While at CSU, Hilbert has coached nine players who have earned AVCA All-America selections, and four to Volleyball Magazine nods. Twenty-one additional players under Hilbert have been named All-America honorable mentions by either the AVCA or Volleyball Magazine. Hilbert s players have also earned nine MW Player-of-the- Year trophies in the league s 14-year history, and a total of 64 all-conference selections. In 2011, when senior Katelyn Steffan and junior Megan Plourde were both named to the AVCA All-America third team, it marked the third time in program history that multiple players were selected in the same season. During 2011, Hilbert was also named the AVCA West Region Coach of the Year, his third regional honor and first since taking over the Rams in He was recognized at the NCAA Final Four in San Antonio, Texas. Additionally, in 24 years as a head coach, he has earned 13 conference coach-of-the-year awards. Hilbert has led his teams to 20 or more wins every season since 1992, a span of 21 straight seasons, including the final five at Idaho and first 16 at Colorado State. The 1999 Rams set the school s singleseason record for winning percentage after going 30-3 (.909). He has also turned CSU s home court, Moby Arena, into one of the most hostile in the nation, compiling a (.891) all-time home record. The Rams are at Moby against ranked opponents, most recently defeating No. 12 Pepperdine (2012) and No. 5 Nebraska (2011). Hilbert has 40 overall wins against ranked teams, including No. 1 UCLA in With big wins come big crowds. The CSU faithful continuously rank in the top 15 nationally for annual attendance figures, even breaking into the top 10 on several occasions. In 2011, a MW record 6,750 fans witnessed the Rams come from behind to defeat No. 5 Nebraska. Just two schools had larger single-match crowds in Between Sept. 18, 1998 and Nov. 18, 2000, CSU rattled off 44 consecutive home wins, a Moby Arena record. The Rams haven t lost a home match against a current member of the MW since Nov. 4, 2005, a span of 45 straight contests entering the 2013 season. CSU has been ranked in the AVCA top-25 poll more frequently than all but 14 Division I teams, with many of those rankings coming under Hilbert. In fact, Hilbert led CSU to its highest-ever ranking, No. 3 in October On two occasions (2000, 2001), CSU has finished the year ranked in the top 10, and between Sept. 1, 1999 and Sept. 23, 2002, CSU was ranked 51 consecutive weeks.
