6 Wellbeing & the Forest Research shows that accessing the outdoors, forests & green spaces has a positive impact on wellbeing. Visitors who access the forest say that four key benefits of accessing the forest for activities are: Physical wellbeing, fun & enjoyment, mental wellbeing as well as a feeling of escape and freedom. Mental wellbeing came out strongly as a theme in qualitative research undertaken. The beauty scenery, wildlife, sensory and seasonal experiences, sense of freedom, getting away from everyday life and the atmosphere of forest sites were key drivers for participants and greatly enhances the experience of being active in nature. Mind, the mental health charity say that outside activities can improve wellbeing and give you a sense of grounding and perspective. Also not to let work be your life. Nurturing outside interests and using skills that your job doesn t utilise will help achieve positive mental health and wellbeing. 6

7 What s on Offer? Mountain Biking The Altura Trail puts the mountain back into biking and has been built for experienced riders with good off road skills and a higher level of fitness and stamina. 13 What s on Offer? Adventure Play & Adventure Club for Children Whinlatter WildPlay trail is a unique play trail for children, with 9 different play zones to explore through the trees. You can practice your engineering skills and draw water from the stream with an Archimedes screw or use the gravel mover to shift gravel around the pit. We also run a fun half term Adventure Club for children aged 7+ with lots of different activities every day. 13

Wildlife Whinlatter is home to a wealth of wildlife that enjoy the shelter provided by its trees, the nearby waters of Bassenthwaite Lake and the open heathland habitats of the Lakeland Fells. The forest is home to Roe Deer, badger & foxes, Crossbills and Siskins whilst the fells are the hunting ground for Buzzards and Merlin. Whinlatter is a Red Squirrel reserve where Red Squirrels are actively being protected and supported. If you walk quietly you may see a red squirrel anywhere in Whinlatter. You can see many different birds using the feeders in front of Siskins Cafe at Whinlatter or during the Osprey season below the lower open air viewpoint at nearby Dodd Wood. The fish of Bassenthwaite lake are the favourite food of Ospreys which nest nearby each year (between April and end of August) and can be seen live from the open air viewpoints on Dodd or via the nest camera at Whinlatter Visitor Centre 14
