These tables have summarised the information gathered from studying scanning strategies of signallers and level crossing operators. The fourth column is the scanning strategy which was observed during site visits and from the video footage. The forth column has summarised signallers descriptions of their scanning strategies and the last columns lists the difficulties they have with obtaining a clear picture and detecting traffic on the crossing. Sandhills IECC Level Crossing Name CCTV Image Scanning Strategy Scanning Strategy Participants declared strategy Difficulties in obtaining a clear picture Ainsdale Hatched horizontal movements between the two barriers, main fixations on the four corners, looking at the barriers as they come down. Before pressing crossing clear, I check the four corners, but also don t take my eyes off the crossing. Have received instructions for viewing four corners. Stop line tangent to the edge of screen Good image under normal weather conditions Glare off the LX surface after rain problematic Birkdale Same as above, long fixations on top of the screen, mainly monitoring the top entry barrier Same as above Shadows of the two buildings at the top of the screen obstruct the view; could affect up to 2/3 rd of the screen on sunny days The fence on the bottom right corner has cluttered the
view Aughton Road Mainly horizontal movements between the two barriers, long fixations on the top right corner of the screen, a rectangular scan path which shows he checks the four corners. Same as above Stop line on the left side is tangent to the edge of the screen; a wider view could help. Depending of the time of the day, glare on the screen because of sunshine varies, but can affect up to half of the screen. Duke Street Horizontal movements between the two barriers, checks the barriers as they come down and checks the four corners once the barriers are down. Same as above Stop line on the right hand side tangent to the edge of screen,
Portland Street Same as before with long fixations on the corners, particularly the top right corner which could be due to the fences on this part of the screen. Same as above Stop line on the right hand side tangent to the edge of screen, The image sometimes is not wavy and not very clear. Cambridge PSB The photo shows the NX panel and the three level crossings studied.
Level Crossing Name CCTV Image Scanning Strategy Scanning Strategy Participants declared strategy Difficulties in obtaining a clear picture Grahams Hatched horizontal movements between the two barriers, covering the whole of the LX. Normally spends more time on the top right corner which could be due to difficulties in detecting people. I concentrate on the envelop and check the entry barriers to ensure that nothing is trapped. Focus on the barriers irrespective of the traffic. The main area of importance is the crossing envelop. White stop line very close to the edge of the screen on the left side. Picture quality deteriorates at night and it seems washed out. Shelfords Very rapid hatched movements between the two barriers, constantly jumping from one barrier to the other. Also looks at the panel occasionally and hence the vertical movements. Same as above. Problems with the picture at night.
Swaston Same as above. His strategy is constant movements across the crossing envelop with brief pauses on the corners. Same as above Difficulty in predicting road user behaviour because of limited view of the level crossing approach on either side of the crossing. Barrier booms block the view. In particular on the right hand side of the crossing. Doncaster PSB Two LX operators in Doncaster participated in this trial. As the pictures show, they each had a different strategy for scanning the level crossing. Participant 1 seems to spend a lot of time looking at the signalling panel on the bottom of the workstation; hence the vertical movements. Whereas, the second participants spent more time scanning the level crossing with hatched horizontal movements between the two barriers. Level Crossing Name CCTV Image Scanning Strategy Scanning Strategy Participants declared strategy Difficulties in obtaining a clear picture
Scans the area between the two barriers, looks down at the LX control panel and signalling interface, hence the vertical scan paths. P1 - bring up the picture, lower button, corner to corner, like an 8 Daw Lane Hatched horizontal movements between the two barriers with pauses on the approaches. P2 - generally, after pressing the picture button, check the centre of the picture and as the barriers are coming down ensure that you don't trap people and kids. Once the barrier is down check the whole crossing again and then press crossing clear. Mainly flicking from one side to the other. Problem with sunshine particularly very early in the morning which affects the right hand side of the screen.
Arksey Mainly checking the area between the two barriers while keeping an eye on train traffic on the panel. P1 same as above The top part of the screen not very visible, because is far away and it can be particular to notice traffic on fogy days. Movements between the two barriers and the barriers themselves as they come down, with pauses on the barriers. Focuses on the pedestrian route along the side of the crossing. P2 Same as above White stop line on the bottom very close to the edge of the screen
Moat Hills Mainly focuses on the approaches. Covers all four corners of the crossing and constantly checks the position of the train on the panel. P1 Same as above No major issues reported by any of the participants Hatched horizontal movements between the two barriers, covering the area of the envelop, mainly focusing on the right hand side of the screen where there is a pedestrian route. P2 Same as above
Bentley Checks between the two barriers and monitors the traffic on the road. Presses the crossing clear button as soon as the barriers are down. P1 Same as above The white stop line on left hand side of the screen is very close to the edge of the screen. Hatched horizontal movements between the two barriers. A final check before he clears the crossing. P2 Same as above Dock Hills Checks the crossing envelop by looking at the centre of the level crossing and the corners. P1 Same as above No major issues reported.
Same as before. P2 Same as above
