A warm welcome back this afternoon to all of our supporters. We kick-off our season today with Motherwell as our visitors as we enter into the group stages of The Betfred Cup. As usual with pre-season our focus is only to get our squad fit and prepared for the season ahead without picking up any injuries. Unfortunately our young defender, Cameron Foy picked up a serious knee injury which required surgery. As a result he will need to sit out for some time. We wish Cameron a speedy recovery. Gus and his players take in some words of Wisdom from guest of honour at 150th Civic Reception. The squad have worked extremely hard and the fitness levels are high. We have had fantastic motivation and the players have fixated on this opening fixture because it is against SPL opposition and live on BT Sport. Hopefully you enjoy today s encounter and are looking forward to the season ahead. Enjoy the Game! Gus MacPherson Head Coach

Keith McAllister And so, that s us 150 years old. It was great to celebrate it last weekend, with the visit of friends from Germany an added bonus. But we have the next 150 to tackle, starting today. If last season was (for me) a surprisingly positive experience, then I d happily take the same again. Gus brought in some great lads, and I thought that those who had remained from the previous campaign really stepped up. To be in with a shout of the promotion playoffs with a couple of matches to go was exceptional; truly exceptional. However, I must admit to feeling a little embarrassed when I spoke to one of the backroom staff about 8 games to go when we could have been involved in either of the play off battles. He told me that the only talk in the dressing room was the tussle to get in the top four. No one talked about the other end of the table. He said that the attitude was overwhelmingly positive. I felt that I was almost letting the side down with my thoughts that avoiding the play offs at the bottom would be a success. I suppose that this is the difference between supporting a team and representing it. Supporters, especially where the team isn t at the top of the tree, tend to be a bit pessimistic. Hey, we ve all experienced dreadful seasons at QP, but talking to Gus is a perfect antidote to that. The guy is permanently upbeat but I suppose that is absolutely necessary if you are a manager. Success is, of course, relative, but if you are to get the most from your players, you have to have a high bar to aim at. I d be astonished if his target was less than the promotion play offs this year. Broadening that concept of aiming high (but, in this instance failing miserably), we have the customary poor start in Europe for Scottish clubs. As someone who has lived through a succession of Scottish sides doing really well in Europe throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s, it is disheartening (not to say embarrassing) to see our top clubs bow out of European competition without a whimper. Teams that you ve never heard of, from countries that you weren t sure were even countries, put our teams to the sword. The Rangers result ranks up there with the worst ever result of any Scottish team in Europe and will the conquerors of St Johnstone progress much further? Hard to believe, but Dunfermline, Dundee (twice), Kilmarnock and Hibs (twice) have all reached the semi-finals of European competitions, quite apart from the more well-known successes of Dundee United, Aberdeen and the Old Firm. What are the chances of any of them, with the obvious exception of Celtic, even making a decent fist of a European campaign? Probably much the same chance of the national side looking anything other than less-than-ordinary in any of its campaigns. And I don t see this situation changing soon. Celtic are so far ahead of the rest, scooping up any decent money going, that it ll be a long time (and a Fergie appearing to lead one of their domestic opponents) for any team to mount a sustained challenge. Is this a good thing? No but you won t see Celtic complaining. This, unfortunately, is the case in an increasing number of European countries where the big are getting decidedly bigger and the rest scramble for the scraps. But we have to concentrate on ourselves. Personally, I m torn between hoping from a Scotlandcentric view, that Project Brave is a success (although it will affect our club badly) and it improves the domestic game, or it s a momentous failure so that it is scrapped and we can be restored to the higher echelons of the youth set-up. A wee bit of a conundrum for the likes of myself as a supporter of our youth efforts and the international side. Ideally a better solution to what ails us is thought out, giving the likes of ourselves the opportunity to compete with the Old Firm kids, as we have done in previous years. We have churned out youth players of a terrific standard in recent years; it seems crazy to disadvantage us simply because we cannot provide full-time football. Our facilities are amongst the best in the country. Can the country afford to dismiss this? There s an obvious answer to that one. Anyway.let s get on with it.

Frank McCrossan Also on 27 February 1978 It is now almost 40 years since Queen s Park created what was considered the biggest shock in Scottish football since Berwick beat Rangers in The occasion was a Scottish Cup fourth round tie at Fir Park in Motherwell on Monday 27 February Queen s Park s progression to the Scottish Cup quarter-final raised an interesting question. If the Spiders reached the last four, where would their match be played? It was the practice at the time for these ties to be played at Hampden. Dumbarton had also made it through to the quarter-finals with a 1-0 win at Tynecastle and, when asked about the prospect of a semi-final meeting with Queen s Park, Sons manager Davy Wilson said We would not play Queen s Park at Hampden. This would be like staging a semi at Ibrox with Rangers as the contestants. As it was, Mr Wilson need not have worried. His side were beaten by Partick Thistle in the quarter-finals and Queen s Park lost 2-0 to Dundee United at Tannadice. Premier League Motherwell were some people s favourites to win the Scottish Cup that year. Queen s Park, on the other hand, were in the Second Division and fielded a side at Fir Park which had an average age of 19 and included two schoolboys in the line-up. Despite being branded no-hopers, the young Spiders side played the better football and earned a deserved victory. John Toshack, Liverpool s Welsh international striker, returned to Wales as player/ manager of Swansea City, then a fourth division club. Liverpool would have received an 80,000 fee if Toshack had left when Norwich City, Newcastle United and Anderlecht tried to sign him. However, the Reds waived a fee on condition that Swansea did not transfer him to another club and pick up a transfer fee. In the early stages of the match, Willie Pettigrew and Jimmy O Rourke missed good chances for the home side but Queen s Park then took control and opened the scoring in 14 minutes when Alan Mackin headed home a Doug Wilkie corner kick. Queen s then doubled their lead in 30 minutes when Alan Horn turned a Tony Glavin shot past Stuart Rennie in the Motherwell goal. The Steelmen pulled a goal back in 40 minutes through Jimmy O Rourke after great work by Willie Pettigrew. There was almost a second major shock that evening. In the Scottish League Cup semi -final at Hampden, Forfar Athletic were leading Rangers by two goals to one with only seven minutes remaining. However, Derek Parlane came to the Light Blues rescue and, in extra time, the Ibrox men scored a further three times to finish off the courageous Loons. For those who imagine that football crowds were always better in previous times, it is worth noting that the attendance at Hampden for the semi-final was a mere 12,799. This included around a thousand fans from Forfar who had travelled down to Glasgow for the biggest match in their club s history. Queen s Park s Shock Victory 27 February 1978 Motherwell 1 Queen s Park 3 Motherwell had a period of supremacy at the start of the second half and Willie Pettigrew hit the woodwork on no fewer than three occasions. The Spiders weathered the storm, eased themselves back into the game and regained their two-goal advantage in 67 mins through a brilliant goal from Tony Glavin. The 18-year-old inside forward fastened on to a superb through pass from Bernie Donnelly and crashed an unstoppable shot past Rennie. Well seldom threatened after that and, to the amazement of most of the crowd of 5,185, Queen s Park won the game by three goals to one. The teams on that winter evening were: Motherwell Stuart Rennie; Willie Watson and Joe Wark; Peter Millar, Willie McVie and Gregor Stevens; Peter Marinello, Willie Pettigrew, Jim O Rourke, Vic Davidson and Stewart MacLaren. Subs: Colin McAdam and Ian Clinging. Queen s Park David Gillespie; Ian Aitken and Bobby Dickson; Jim Rooney, Alan Mackin and Les Ross; Derek Wood, Tony Glavin, Alan Horn, Bernie Donnelly and Doug Wilkie. Subs: Ray Edgar and Jim McAloon. A modest Joe Gilroy, the Queen s Park coach, said in a post-match interview, I ve always believed in myself. I rebuilt Falkirk, Valur of Iceland, Morton and now Queen s Park. Each week I ve more than 60 players in my charge at Hampden. I insist they have quality and our place in the Cup quarter-finals shows this to be justified. Not surprisingly, Motherwell s vice-chairman Ian Livingston was less happy with matters. He blasted the Well players for a totally unprofessional display. The English international footballer James Beattie was born on this day in Lancaster. The former Blackburn, Southampton, Everton, Sheffield United and Stoke City player was a big name signing for Rangers in 2010 but made few appearances due to injury and poor form. He was allowed to go on loan to Blackpool after only six months or so at Ibrox was, of course, the year Scotland was going to win the World Cup. Also, it was the year of arguably Scotland s most memorable World Cup song Ally s Tartan Army by Andy Cameron, although some may prefer the 1982 classic We have a dream by BA Robertson and the Scotland World Cup squad. Ally s Tartan Army achieved around 360,000 record sales but it appears that not everyone appreciated its artistic merit. An annoyed reader complained in a newspaper that BBC DJs were ignoring the record. Down south, non-league Blyth Spartans met Wrexham in a FA Cup 5th round replay. Blyth had beaten Stoke City away from home in the fourth round and the match created considerable interest in the north-east of England. The game was played at St James Park in Newcastle and attracted a crowd of over 42,000 but they were to leave disappointed as the Welsh side ran out 2-1 winners. However, Orient (now known as Leyton Orient) kept the flag flying for the lower division clubs with a 2-1 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in another 5th round replay.

The Visitors By Sean Davenport Motherwell Football Club HEAD TO HEAD Played: 111 Queen s Park: 23 Draw: 17 Motherwell: 71 We welcome Stephen Robinson and his Motherwell side to Hampden for this afternoon s Betfred Cup First Round tie. With four pre-season friendlies under their belt since the start of the month, the Steel Men will be looking to avoid any upset in their first competitive match of the season at the National Stadium. From their four friendly games, they have recorded two wins, both 2-0, against Stirling Albion and Livingston, and two defeats, losing 3-2 to Gateshead last Saturday and 1-0 to Barrow on Tuesday night. The Steel Men will be looking to better last season s efforts in this competition which saw them qualify for the second round having finished second in their group behind Rangers, only to crash out at the hands of Celtic after suffering a 5-0 defeat at Celtic Park. The Manager Stephen Robinson Before going into management, Robinson forged a successful playing career for himself which spanned 17 years and saw him make in excess of 450 appearances for clubs in England. His playing career began as a youth with Tottenham Hotspur where he also managed two first team appearances in the season, also being loaned out to Leyton Orient. He departed White Hart Lane for Bournemouth in 1994 and went in to make 241 appearances and score 52 goals for the south coast side. Short spells at Preston North End and Bristol City followed before a move to Luton Town in Robinson spent six years there and made 185 appearances. During his time as a player he gained international recognition at U16, U18, U21 and Northern Ireland B level. He also went on to feature on seven occasions for the national side. Robinson joined the Motherwell coaching staff as Assistant Manager to Ian Barraclough in February 2015 whilst also assisting the Northern Ireland international side. He was appointment manager of Oldham Athletic in July 2016 before departing there in January He returned to Motherwell the following month, this time to assist then manager Mark McGhee. Less than two weeks later he took over as interim manager before being appointed as manager on a permanent basis in March. Since taking over he has took charge of the side on 12 occasions, winning four, drawing two and losing six, giving him a win percentage of 33.3% CLUB HONOURS (courtesy of Scottish League Champions (1) 1931/32 (Finished on 66 points, five ahead of runners-up Rangers) Scottish Cup Winners (2) 1952 (Beat Dundee 4-0) 1991 (Beat Dundee United 4-3 AET) Scottish League Cup Winners (1) 1950 (Beat Hibernian 3-0) Scottish First Division Champions (2) 1981/82 (Finished on 61 points, ten ahead of runners-up Kilmarnock) 1984/85 (Finished on 50 points, two ahead of runners-up Clydebank) Scottish Second Division Champions (2) 1953/54 (Finished on 45 points, three ahead of runners-up Kilmarnock) 1984/85 (Finished on 64 points, nine ahead of runners-up Ayr United) CLUB RECORDS (courtesy of Most appearances: 626 (Bob Ferrier ) Most league goals: 284 (Hughie Ferguson ) Most league goals in a season: 52 (Willie McFadyen 1931/32) Most European goals: 7 (Jamie Murphy ) Highest scoring home win: 12-1 (v Dundee United 1954) Highest scoring away win: 1-8 (v Thistle 1894) Highest scoring home defeat: 0-7 (v Celtic 1982) Highest scoring away defeat: 8-0 (v Aberdeen 1979) Highest scoring home draw: 6-6 (v Dumbarton 1954, v Hibernian 2010) Highest scoring away draw: 3-3 (v St Mirren 2009) Highest home aggregate: 8-5 (v Queen of the South 1938) Highest away aggregate: 8-3 (v Partick Thistle 1971) Highest scoring European win: 8-1 (v Flamurtari 2009) Highest scoring European defeat: 3-0 (v Steaua Bucharest 2009) Longest winning sequence: 12 (1968) Longest drawing sequence: 5 (1975 and 1988) Longest losing sequence: 9 (1979) Longest run of clean sheets: 7 (1996) Longest run of failing to score: 8 ( ) Longest run of without a win: 19 (1988) Longest run of without a draw: 34 ( ) Longest run of without a loss: 30 (1933) Longest run of without a clean sheet: 35 ( ) Longest run of without failing to score: 56 ( ) Record home attendance: 35,632 (v Rangers 1952)

Scotland Gubbed as John Greig Honoured Whilst looking through some books of match reports recently, I came across a game I d forgotten about. On Sunday 16th April 1978 a Scotland Select lined up against Rangers at Ibrox for the testimonial match of Rangers and Scotland legend John Greig. The game was fairly high profile.rangers would go on to complete the treble that season, and Scotland would soon be off to Argentina for that summer s World Cup(I wonder how that panned out!). A crowd estimated at 65,000 turned up for this club v country clash. Which must have earned MR Greig a decent pay day. The teams lined up Rangers McCloy, Jardine,Greig,Forsyth, Jackson,MacDonald,McClean,Russell,Johnstone,Smith, Cooper Scotland Select Blyth(Coventry),Brownlie(Hibs),Whittaker (partick),rioch(derby),mcqueen(man Utd),Masson(derby),Wallace (Coventry),Gemmill(Nottingham Forest),Jordan (Man Utd), Hartford (Man City),Robertson(Nottingham Forest). So, a bit of a gubbing for the national team. Perhaps they could have done with some Rangers players in their team. Jardine and Johnstone and Forsyth would certainly have been in contention for selection at that time.indeed 9 of the rangers team that day were full Scotland caps. Only Brian Whittaker of the select never received a full cap. Yours in the Beautiful Game Dave MacPuzzle Scottish Football Museum Fascinating Fact. In the same book of press clippings came an interesting snippet concerning the 1978 world Cup In Argentina. Apparently the President of Peru had banned Preruvian fans from travelling to the tournament, as peru was holding a General Election at the time, and voting was compulsory. I bet Scotland fans wished prime Minister Jim Callaghan had gone to the pols at the same time! This was not a first choice Scotland Eleven, but it was of decent strength. Though perhaps Rangers benefited from their players being used to playing together, as they racked up a 5-0 win. Derek Johnstone scored the first goal with a header that went in off a Post. The second goal was greeted with a huge roar of approval.the score, john Greig,Who swept the ball home after good play from Russell and Jardine. Bobby Russell got Rangers next 2 goals. Greig then completed the scoring. At half Time John was presented with a clock by his team mates, and he addressed the crowd over the PA. Queen s Supporters take in the Football Museum as part of 150th Heritage Trail

Supporters Notes And it s back to business after the 150th celebrations. I d like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped out over the weekend and made it such a success, and also thank all those who supported our events. It was great to be able to just leave people to get on with things, knowing that they d do a good job. They have my undying gratitude. I d name them.but I d forget someone. Hopefully, I ll get round you all and thank you personally. However, I d like to thank the Club personnel Christine Wright, Rachael Clark, George Watson, Gardner Spiers, all the coaching staff that got involved, Iain Cairns, President Alan Hutchison and the indefatigable bar, bistro and cleaning staff. We hope to repeat the Heritage Trail sometime in the near future and we will have the various brochures used available to view online soon. We have quite a number of new 150th items at the souvenir shop scarves, shot glasses, hip flasks, mugs, pictorial coasters, badges, t-shirts, polo shirts and, of course, the home and away kits. The away kits (that s the glorious hooped ones) have had embroidered onto them. If you have bought one without the embroidery and would like this done, we ll be collecting them in and we ll have the embroidery done free of charge. Return your tops with your name, home address and address to the souvenir shop. We have revamped the online souvenir shop and the result has been quite an uplift in sales. I have to thank Logan Taylor for doing a power of work on this; way over and beyond what I could reasonably have expected. A real labour of love, and very much appreciated. We may even be able to accept bus bookings in the near future. Away buses We will be running buses to the Greenock Morton, Berwick Rangers and Motherwell Colts cup games as well as all away league games bar Albion Rovers.
