MARK ROBERTS Head Coach I would like to welcome all at Stirling Albion to Hampden Park this weekend. Last weekend against Edinburgh City we were bullied all over the pitch. We kept giving away set pieces, corners and free kicks in the wider areas. We came out the 2nd half and did a lot better. We had 3 or 4 really good chances and if we had taken 1 it may have been a different game. As I ve said before the team who finishes above Edinburgh City will win the league if it is not them. We have been unlucky and our momentum has been knocked over the past couple of games. We have a good run in front of us and it is up to us to go and kick on. If we have a good December we will be right in the playoff spots and that s where we want to be. It will be tough game against Stirling Albion this weekend. Their new manager has got them playing and scoring a few goals now. We know what is coming on Saturday. We have a real chance. Enjoy the game! MR

KEITH McALLISTER I thoroughly enjoyed the tussles with the Welsh League sides. Both are virtually full time and I thought that we did particularly well in coping with that. The way we came back against TNS was simply superb and we could have been a little closer to Connahs Quay once we had got over the initial shock of their tactics; I ve never seen anything like that in my 50 plus years of watching football. But it worked, so good luck to them. On crowds of , you wonder how both sides can possibly sustain full time football. The answer, of course, is wealthy owners who back the clubs to the point where they waaaaaaay outspend the other sides in their League; sides whose crowds are comparable with our own Division 2. On a good day. This propels them into European competition, and that, kids, is where the real money comes in. The money to be made from competing in Europe is quite startling taken in the context of clubs like TNS. For simply qualifying for either of the two European competitions, clubs earn 260,000 euros. You can more than double that if you get through one round. Given the absolute gash that sometimes qualifies from the smaller nations (Falkirk, for example!) it s not entirely unheard of for the likes of TNS to get through one round and pocket half a million pounds. And that is what allows them to have a full time squad which largely wipes the floor with the opposition in domestic competitions. Their plan is to have a playing budget of 400,000 paid for by Europe, with the running costs of the club coming via their impressive set up in Oswestry. Again, it works. for the bigger budgets of TNS and Connahs Quay, Wales has another two sides in Europe each year, so genuinely tiny clubs are in with a chance of top class football.at least for two games a season. That s clubs with smaller crowds than us, whose grounds often don t match up to European competition standard, entertaining European fitba. That s not bad at all. Interestingly, Celtic s European venture last year was reckoned to have netted them over 27 million, with half of that coming from a terrific TV deal that British clubs have negotiated with UEFA. They received more than Dortmund and Napoli; hard to see why that would be, but this TV deal certainly works in their favour. So, for TNS in Wales, read Celtic in Scotland. It s not hard to see why they are picking up a seemingly unstoppable run of league titles; their cash advantage over all other Scottish clubs is incredible. Killie s present top of the table placing is all the more laudable in the light of this. It would be great if they could keep it up. They, of course, were the last non-old Firm team to lift the title before the change in the league set up from two divisions. And you have to go back to 1965 for that. Can Stevie Clarke do it? I m sure that he has the non-old Firm nation firmly behind him. For Connahs Quay, on even smaller crowds, the money they receive also allows them to have 10 players on full time wages, with the offer open to all the others. The Welsh League might not be able to attract the biggest Welsh sides like Cardiff and Swansea, but the prospect of European football for these small clubs must be fantastic. Even allowing

BY FRANK McCROSSAN ON THIS DAY Glasgow Cup Final Queen s Park 8 Partick Thistle 0 8TH DECEMBER 1888 On this day 130 years ago, Queen s Park and Partick Thistle met in the final of the Glasgow Football Association Challenge Cup at the first Ibrox Park. The Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup had been running since 1877 but that competition included sides from outside Glasgow, such as Dumbarton and Hibernian. The Glasgow Football Association had decided to launch a cup competition specifically for the Association s clubs. This was the second year of the competition. In its first year, Cambuslang had won the trophy. Whereas the Charity Cup was played for towards the end of the season, the Glasgow Cup took place between September and December. In their route to the Glasgow Cup Final, Queen s Park had beaten Glasgow Thistle 9-1, Cambuslang Hibernian 4-0, Northern 6-0 (after a 5-5 draw) and Celtic 2-0. Partick Thistle had been in pretty good form in the season to date and had beaten 3rd Lanark Rifle Volunteers and Clyde in their progress to the final. The Jags supporters were expecting their side to mount a real challenge to Queen s Park but they were to be sadly disappointed. After a lengthy spell of wet weather, matters took a turn for the better on match day and the 6,000 spectators were treated to bright sunshine. Despite all the previous rain, the Ibrox pitch was in fine condition. Both sides started the match brightly but, after Bill Sellar had gone close, Queen s Park took the lead in 15 minutes through Jimmy Hamilton. A minute later, the Spiders went two up when David Allan knocked the ball home following a scramble in front of goal. After a further four minutes or so, Queen s scored for the third time when Willie Berry beat Thistle goalkeeper John McCorkindale from close range. Partick Thistle picked up a bit after this and there was no further scoring in the first half. Play was fairly subdued in the early stages of the second period. Willie Paul raised Thistle s hopes with a fine shot that was well saved by George Gillespie. However, any hopes the Jags had of an unlikely comeback were dashed in 63 minutes when Willie Berry powered the ball past McCorkindale. The Whiteinch men seemed to lose heart at this point and Queen s Park did much as they liked for the remainder of the match. In 68 minutes, Jimmy Hamilton notched a fifth for the Spiders with a shot into the top corner. Bob Fraser then got on the end of a corner kick to make it six and Bill Sellar hit a seventh with Thistle claiming in vain for offside. The eighth and final goal came from a scrimmage in front of goal. It is not known who got the final touch. What had been expected to be a closely-contested final had turned into something of a rout, much to the embarrassment of Partick Thistle and their fans. Queen s Park had 25 shots at goal in the game, which is a good indication of their dominance. The two sides at Ibrox were: - Queen s Park George Gillespie; Bob Smellie and John Harvie; James McAra, Allan Stewart and Tom Robertson; Bob Fraser, Willie Berry, Jimmy Hamilton, David Allan and Bill Sellar. Partick Thistle John McCorkindale; Thomas Campbell and John Hendry; George Ward, William Proudfoot and John Marshall; Bennett, James McBride, Willie Paul, Andrew Johnston and David Hislop. Also on 8 December 1888 Today s opponents Stirling Albion were not formed until However, Albion s predecessors King s Park were in action on this day at Merchiston Park in Falkirk. Their opponents were East Stirlingshire in the Stirlingshire Cup. Shire won 2-1 before a crowd of 3,000. A circular was issued by Mr A S Blair, honorary secretary of the Scottish Rugby Union, expressing concern at the tendency to adopt a rough and ungentlemanly style of play in certain club matches. He wrote that it was not yet deemed necessary to legislate on the issue as he was confident that he had only to bring the matter to the attention of members to ensure their assistance and

support in eradicating and suppressing so great an evil. He said that rough play reduced an otherwise enjoyable and healthy pastime to one of disgust and brutality and posed an inherent danger to life and limb. It was not the general practice in the 1880s to present the trophies to cupwinning sides immediately after the final whistle, as is the case today. Following their Ibrox victory, the Queen s Park players met for tea (dinner) in the Royal Hotel in Sauchiehall Street, where Mr A Kirkwood (3rd LRV), the President of the Glasgow Football Association, handed over the handsome Glasgow Cup to Stewart Lawrie, the President of Queen s Park. The players were then presented with their badges (medals). It was commonplace in Scottish football in Victorian times for teams to submit protests if they felt they had been hard done by. On this day, two Scottish Cup ties were replayed after protests made by the losing sides in the original matches were upheld by the Committee of the Scottish Football Association. The first of the replayed ties saw Celtic and Clyde meet at Celtic Park. Clyde had been victorious at Parkhead two weeks previously, but Celtic had protested that the Bridgeton men had taken too long to change prohibited footwear (bars on boots), meaning that the game finished in darkness. There was to be no repeat of the original result in the replay, with Celtic running out 9-2 winners. Clyde were not helped by having to play half the game with ten men after left back Hart dislocated his shoulder. The second replay involved 3rd Lanark Rifle Volunteers and Abercorn of Paisley. The Volunteers had won the original match 5-4 but Abercorn had made a protest to the referee at the final whistle, again on the basis of there being insufficient light in the closing stages of the game. At the meeting of the SFA Committee, the referee stated that he could not follow the play in the final eight minutes. The replayed match at Cathkin Park ended in a 2-2 draw. Both Clyde and 3rd LRV had played again under protest and they called a special meeting of the SFA to make their case, but their protests were dismissed. As it was, 3rd LRV won their second replay with Abercorn and went on to beat Celtic 2-1 in the Scottish Cup Final.

FOCUS ON STIRLING ALBION PHOTO BY IAN CAIRNS BY SEAN DAVERNPORT The Manager Kevin Rutkiewicz 38 year old Rutkiewicz took over the reigns at Forthbank in October this year following the departure of Dave McKay. Rutkiewicz had previously been assistant manager at Annan Athletic. Prior to moving into the management side of the game he had enjoyed a playing career which spanned twenty years and saw him play for a number of sides the length and breadth of the country. Rutkiewicz started his career as an 18 year old at Aberdeen where he made in excess of 50 first team appearances for the Pittodrie side between 1998 and 2004, before moving to St Johnstone. He spent seven years at McDairmid Park, making over 100 appearances. Following his departure from the Saints, Kevin went on to play for Dunfermline Athletic, Greenock Morton, East Fife, Blantyre Victoria, Irvine MEadwon, Clyde, Annan Athletic and American side Caroline Rail Hawks. 11 SAFETY NOTICE ludere Supporter safety is a key priority for all Clubs, we at Queen s Park FC are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that the match day experience is safe and enjoyable. One of the most dangerous things we have to deal with is pyrotechnic articles such as smoke bombs and flares in the stadium and we'd ask that you assist us to look after you by not bringing such articles with you to matches. These articles can cause severe burns, damage to hearing or breathing difficulties and their use is especially distressing for groups such as small children and those who can't easily move away when pyrotechnics are activated. Experience shows that when a pyrotechnic is activated in a crowd there is often a movement away from the immediate area which can cause panic and disorientation and which creates a risk of slips and trips or crushing for those nearby. Please be in no doubt that these articles are unpleasant and potentially life-threatening to be around - they are also illegal at football matches - and being caught with them will result in exclusion from Queen s Park FC as well as a possible criminal conviction. causa ludendi
