MARK ROBERTS Head Coach I would like to welcome everyone involved with Raith Rovers to Hampden for the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup. I ve watched Friday s game back and it was a decent first half. We started the game not bad then they came into it. Jordan saved us a couple times pulling off some great saves. After that we were decent, we had some good play in the final third and had some good crosses into the box. Our final ball wasn t good enough however. The Nomads are a decent side and they found a way to win a game of football. The two goals that they scored were quality rather than just bombarding us. I was reasonably happy with our performance. The disappointing thing is we lost, the players hate losing. There is a real opportunity for us if we are at it on Saturday against Raith. If we are aggressive and play the way we can we have a chance. We will be hoping to play more on the ball than we did on Friday night. There will be a real opportunity for us but it will be difficult for us. They are high flying in the league above, it will be tough. Enjoy the game!

KEITH McALLISTER I m spoilt rotten here. I get to rubbish just about anything to do with football every couple of weeks and get away with it; it s great. I find a lot to get agitated about when it comes to modern football, so it s easy for me to switch on the rant button and get on with it. However, this week, what with Queen s on the up and Scotland winning not one, but two (count em!), matches in four days, it would be churlish to slate the game, or even some of the people who thoroughly deserve it. So, this week, I m going to veer right off course and slate rugby. Now, I used to play the game when I was a lad. I played full back and that, dear reader, is a nightmare of a position to play when you re a wee boy. The reason for this is that schoolboy rugby is full of massive guys who have been kept back a year or two and who, at about 12 years old, had impressive sideburns, a bad smoking habit, and whose sole interest in life was the physical punishment of anyone who got in their way. Which takes me back to playing full back. The object of schoolboy rugby is to pass the ball to the massive guy with the monobrow and squeal with delight as the appointed bully tramples all the weedy straplings like me as he powers his way to a try, celebrated in the traditional way after the match by necking it from a bottle of Buckfast (note: other fortified wines are available). So, time after time, these hairy mammoths would hammer their way past aimless flailing arms and head for the only person in his way, the full back (there is only one in rugby), and your team mates would recovery their bottle enough to shout at you to throw yourself at this guy s ankles to stop him in his tracks. Whilst I was, and am, unable to punch my way out of a wet paper bag, throwing myself at fat guys stamping, booted feet was something I could manage. And so, I would regularly have guys twice my weight land on top of me after the tackle. Not my idea of fun then, nor now. But that was rugby as I experienced it. It could be quite brutal, and bullies loved it. Banging people about and being praised for it wonderful, eh? I was therefore interested in an article penned by an international rugby coach who was warming about the number of people, particularly kids, being injured whilst playing the game. That said, there have been initiatives and rule changes to protect both kids and adults from the worst excesses that the game has. With adults, the increase in size and power of modern day players plus the intense competition in the game means that injuries are commonplace. The coach highlighted a couple of areas where brute force is being used against the law but overlooked, with a particular concern being focussed on the gap between the better nations, whose players are getting bigger, and the other nations, who don t have the advantage of money being pumped into them to develop their guys. He mentioned the recent match between England and Japan, where a squillion quid was raised but not a penny went to the amateur Japanese team who received under 14 (fourteen) per day (the England players receive in excess of 15,000), and whose national association received nothing other than travel expenses for their side. A conservative estimate put the total receipts at 7 million. Without the Japanese team, there would have been no income at all, and they received precisely nothing. Such is sport at the top level, and we see the same thing in football as the top European clubs are swimming in money whilst grass roots football is on its knees. In an excellent juxtaposition (and how I have longed to use that word in a QP programme article), the same page carried an article on the England team, with a quote from the England coach that his players should be physically smashing them in reference to the amateur Japan team. Physically smashing them ; this is the coach of the national team.think on that. He added that this had happened in the previous week s match with New Zealand and that it was nice that he had heard one of the All Black player s ribs crack a little bit. I m reading this and thinking that if this is what modern sport has come to, there is something wrong with the world. This was also the game where the crowd were encouraged to drown out the traditional All Black pre-match haka ritual. I love to see this, but it s now acceptable to ruin the spectacle. Football has its faults, but I can t say that I see modern rugby as being the example to us all that it is often hailed to be. Perhaps we can learn some things from rugby, but I have to say that I would be wary of it being too much.

BY FRANK McCROSSAN ON THIS DAY Queen s Park 1 Raith Rovers 1 24TH NOVEMBER 1984 Queen s Park and Raith Rovers were also in opposition on this day 34 years ago. The occasion was a Scottish League Second Division match at Hampden Park. Neither side was having the best of seasons in what was the third tier of Scottish football. Raith Rovers were in sixth position in the league, while Queen s Park were eleventh. Queen s Park had been boosted by a win at Arbroath on the previous Saturday after a run of seven games without a victory. The Spiders had been expected be without flu victims Jim Nicholson and Jimmy Ward for the clash with Rovers but both declared themselves fit. Queen s Park had a lucky escape in the first minute of the match when Keith Wright blazed wide with only Willie Spence to beat. Benny Verrecchia then missed a headed chance before Queen s took the lead in nine minutes with a superbly crafted goal. Jim Nicholson combined beautifully with Jimmy Ward before blasting a thunderous drive past Alan Blair. There was no further scoring in the first half. On the balance of play, Queen s Park should have been further ahead. However, only a superb Spence save from a Ramsay lob had prevented Rovers from drawing level. The Kirkcaldy men did draw level in 70 minutes when Chris Robertson dashed in to head home a Sweeney cross. Queen s Park then suffered a blow in the 81st minute when Frank Loughran was sent off after a second booking. This gave Rovers the edge and only an amazing goal-line clearance by Gary Fraser prevented the visitors from grabbing the winner. The general view was that, despite Queen s Park having created the greater number of chances over the 90 minutes, a draw was a fair result. The two sides on that late November afternoon were: - Queen s Park Willie Spence; Frank Loughran and Paul McLaughlin; Willie Cairns, Kenny Brannigan and Desi Walker; Jimmy Ward, Gary Fraser, Mark Smith, Jim Nicholson and Benny Verrecchia. Raith Rovers Alan Blair; Tom Houston and Paul Sweeney; Brian Ritchie, Colin More and Iain Phillip; Paul Smith, Charlie Elvin, Paul Ramsay, Chris Robertson and Keith Wright. The draw did little to improve either side s standing in the league table. Raith Rovers went on to finish the season in seventh position, three places ahead of Queen s Park. Also on 24 November 1984 Celtic directors had an emergency meeting with SFA secretary Ernie Walker. The aim was to find a quick solution to where Celtic s controversial European Cup Winners Cup tie with Rapid Vienna would be replayed. Celtic appeared to have beaten Rapid on aggregate after a 3-0 victory at Parkhead. However, objects thrown by the crowd were said to have injured an Austrian player and UEFA ordered the match to be replayed. The likeliest venues for the replay were Pittodrie and Old Trafford. Understandably, club officials, civic authorities and the police in both Aberdeen and Manchester were cautious due to the fear of trouble if Celtic lost. The replay eventually took place at Old Trafford on 12 December Rapid won 1-0, despite facing a very hostile atmosphere, and went on to reach the final of the competition, only to lose 3-1 to Everton. It was reported that Clyde were looking for a new home amid speculation that Shawfield s owners, The Greyhound Racing Association, were planning to sell the ground to the ASDA supermarket chain. East Kilbride was the early favourite to be Clyde s new base when their Shawfield lease agreement expired at the end of season 1985/86, but ground-sharing with possibly Queen s Park or Hamilton Academical was also thought to be a possibility. As it was, the Bully Wee ground-shared with Partick Thistle and Hamilton Accies for the best part of eight seasons before moving to their present home in Cumbernauld in Shawfield was not sold and continues to host greyhound racing to this day.

Average attendances in the Premier League in the season to date were Celtic 24,287; Rangers 22,628; Aberdeen 16,587; Dundee United 10,476; Hearts 10,383; Dundee 8,708; Hibernian 7,850; St Mirren 6,007; Morton 4,577; and Dumbarton 4,112. Probably for the only time in the history of Scottish football, the signing of a schoolboy on a S form by a Scottish League club was front page news. The boy was 14-year-old John Spencer of St Ninian s RC High School in Giffnock and the club was Rangers FC. The history-making signing, in the days before Mo Johnston, met with a mixed reception from Rangers fans. On hearing the news, a supporters club in one Lanarkshire town cancelled its buses to Rangers game in Greenock. On the other hand, the Light Blues manager Jock Wallace said I don t care if he is a Catholic, Muslim or anything else. The boy is a good player and wants to play for Rangers that s all that matters. Young Spencer celebrated his signing by scoring four goals for his school against St Margaret s High School of Airdrie. Football hooliganism was a major problem in England in (Scotland was not immune.) Police in London received a tip-off that around 50 armed youths were on a train heading for the Tottenham v Chelsea match at White Hart Lane. The police pounced on the train and found 42 weapons, including knives and knuckle-dusters, hidden under seats and scattered along the track. Snooker was at the height of its popularity in The game attracted massive TV audiences and the leading players were household names. The Coral UK Championship was under way in Preston and featured celebrity performers like Jimmy White, Denis Taylor, Eddie Charlton, Willie Thorne, Cliff Thorburn and Tony Knowles. Steve Davis went on to beat Alex Hurricane Higgins in the final of the competition. The outcome of the tournament was overshadowed, however, by the news that Canadian star Big Bill Werbeniuk had decided to give up his daily intake of 30 pints of lager.

FOCUS ON RAITH ROVERS FC BY SEAN DAVERNPORT JOHN MCGLYNN FIRST TEAM MANAGER (Courtesy of John McGlynn was appointed as Manager of the Football Club for a second time on 25th September 2018, on a contract until the end of season A native of Musselburgh, John is Rovers 34th permanent manager appointed since WW2, and started his playing career in midfield with Bolton Wanderers youth system before playing for Berwick Rangers, Musselburgh Athletic and Whitehill Welfare. Whilst at Whitehill he became involved in the coaching side of the game. John s management career started while he was in his 30s; firstly at Easthouses Lily and then Musselburgh Athletic before he was brought into the Hearts coaching setup by Jim Jeffries in In his 10 years at Tynecastle had 2 spells as Interim Manager, replacing John Robertson and George Burley in John s managerial stock rose in his 6 years at Stark s Park from 2006 to 2012, where he turned the club s fortunes around with a mixture of hard graft and determination masterminding several memorable campaigns. His first challenge was to restore pride and SFL First Division football to Stark s Park after relegation which he achieved in his second full season in Kirkcaldy as the Rovers were crowned SFL Second Division Champions in Photo: Raith Rovers F.C. The highlights of John s time at the Rovers in the SFL First Division are well documented, with Rovers supporters still recalling with great fondness the Scottish Cup run to the semi-final defeat to eventual winners Dundee United in season , which featured a memorable victory against the odds away from home at Pittodrie and then a thrilling quarter final victory over Dundee at Dens Park. The following season under John s leadership Rovers mounted a serious challenge for the First Division League title and promotion to the SPL; and despite losing out to Fife derby rivals Dunfermline Athletic in the final weeks of the season, won the PFA Scotland Manager of the Year award. John also managed Hearts and Livingston after leaving Stark s Park before taking on the role position of First Team Scout at Celtic in January 2015, working under Ronnie Deila and then Brendan Rodgers, until taking the reins at Stark s Park early on in season PHOTO IAN CAIRNS

SAFETY NOTICE Supporter safety is a key priority for all Clubs, we at Queen s Park FC are committed to doing everything we can to ensure that the match day experience is safe and enjoyable. One of the most dangerous things we have to deal with is pyrotechnic articles such as smoke bombs and flares in the stadium and we'd ask that you assist us to look after you by not bringing such articles with you to matches. These articles can cause severe burns, damage to hearing or breathing difficulties and their use is especially distressing for groups such as small children and those who can't easily move away when pyrotechnics are activated. Experience shows that when a pyrotechnic is activated in a crowd there is often a movement away from the immediate area which can cause panic and disorientation and which creates a risk of slips and trips or crushing for those nearby. Please be in no doubt that these articles are unpleasant and potentially life-threatening to be around - they are also illegal at football matches - and being caught with them will result in exclusion from Queen s Park FC as well as a possible criminal conviction. ludere causa ludendi
