East Region Quality Mark Awards 19 local clubs and schools have been recognised for their valuable contribution to grassroots football and at a special awards evening, the clubs were presented with their Scottish FA Quality Mark Awards. The Quality Mark Accreditation Scheme, run by the Scottish FA in partnership with McDonald s and sportscotland, recognises proactive clubs and schools working to increase youth and community participation. There are three Quality Mark categories -, Development, and Community. The following clubs received their awards: Club Pitfour Football Club Riverside Community Sports Club Carnoustie Panmure Football Club Forfar Farmington Football Club Bayside Football Club LKB United Football Club Arbroath Community Sports Club Brechin Youths Football Club Celtic Tayside Football Club Cowdenbeath United Discovery Lads Drumgeith Athletic Football Club Dryburgh Athletic Football Club Ferry Athletic Football Club Kirkcaldy Colts 1998 s Monifieth Ladies Raith Rovers Ladies Football Club St James Football Club Kennoway United Award Community Community Development Development Development Development Clubs and schools receive the award after meeting standards in areas such as coach and player development, management, administration, welfare and planning. So far more than 250 clubs and schools have achieved accreditation over the three categories, and over 4,000 coaches have benefited from coach education and first aid training. "The Quality Mark programme is designed to support new clubs to get established and to give recognition to the clubs who have been well established for a number of years, said Kevin Lee. The spectrum of support that is offered to clubs is well demonstrated by the representation of the awarded clubs today. From the newly established one team clubs to our Community & Development Clubs who have multiple age groups representing children, youths, and adults that have all been developing grassroots football in their local communities for a number of years - well done and thanks to all of the awards winners" McDonald s, Scottish FA s community partner since 2002, are committed to helping young footballers shine by attracting 13,000 new volunteers and 10,000 new coaches by 2014, as well as supporting 600 clubs and 52,000 players through new and existing football networks. Through Quality Mark, McDonald s and the Scottish FA aim to provide support to grassroots clubs and schools across Scotland as they strive to broaden youth and community participation and to enhance player, coach and volunteer development. The Quality Mark Accreditation Scheme is supported by sportscotland, the national agency for sport. sportscotland has one clear focus to develop a world class sporting system for Scotland and works with partners to build success for Scottish sport. 3 Saints Academy Inclusion Through Sports St Johnstone s community coaching team are at the forefront of a groundbreaking new initiative which was formerly launched on Monday 14th November at McDiarmid Park by Chairman Stevie Brown. Believed to be first of its kind in Britain, by working in partnership with Perth and Kinross Council s Housing and Community Care Service, the initiative, entitled Saints Academy-Inclusion Through Sport, offers adults with learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorder or mental ill health the opportunity to participate in a range of different sports on a regular basis. Stevie said: I am delighted that our community coaching team is reaching out to different parts of the local community to offer increased sporting opportunities for people who may not otherwise get the chance to take part in them. I hope this continues to evidence the pivotal role our club plays in this area and I am grateful that the Council recognised this with its support for this project. The programme adds another element to the expansive community programme run by Atholl Henderson and Dave Black. Further information can be viewed at Working with Sports Development Officers and community coaches, participants will get the chance to receive regular coaching in sports such as football, cricket, tennis and rugby at accessible venues across Perth and Kinross. 1.St. Johnstone FC manager Steve Lomas gets involved in the action 3
Peter Houston Back Tesco Bank Football Challenge Children from three local primary schools across Dundee had an amazing morning of football and fun at a Tesco Bank Football Challenge Festival on Tuesday (8th November) on at Douglas Sports Centre as Dundee United manager and Scotland assistant national coach Peter Houston paid a special visit to the 184 participants. The schools are the latest to have taken part in six weeks of coaching sessions as part of the Scottish FA s flagship participation programme and are now coming together for a finale to remember. The Tesco Bank Football Challenge is a four-year community programme run in partnership with the Scottish FA. The project introduces football to Primary 2 and Primary 3 children (six to eight years old) across Scotland to help get them engaged in a healthy and active lifestyle. Now in its second year 600 boys and girls in the area have taken part, this year across eight schools. Overall, more than 36,000 children across Scotland will have been involved in the Tesco Bank Football Challenge by June Neil Lowden, Head Teacher at St Pius Primary School said: The children had a fantastic day. The programme fits in really well to the Curriculum for Excellence, but more than anything else gets the children active at the same time as having a lot of fun. I cannot recommend the programme highly enough. Dundee United manager and Scotland assistant national coach Peter Houston said: It was brilliant to see the children have so much fun at the Tesco Bank Football Challenge. I think it is superb programme and I m really pleased to support it. Dundee football development officer Gavin Tinley added: At a time when participation is a big topic of discussion we are delighted to have the opportunity to get local kids involved in basic football activity through the Tesco Bank Football Challenge, which fits in entirely with the Scottish FA s Scotland United 2020 strategy. The target to double the number of participants in football this year to 135,000 will be fantastically supported by programmes like this. In the first year of the programme 479 schools across Scotland s 32 local authorities participated in the programme, involving 19,061 boys and girls. There were 74 regional festivals and over 1000 teachers and volunteers went through the Scottish FA s in-service programme. The primary schools involved in this year s Tesco Bank Football Challenge across Dundee are: Charleston Primary School, Hillside Primary School, Gowriehill Primary School, Claypotts Primary School, Newfields Primary School, Whitfield Primary School, St Pius Primary School, Charleston Primary School, Hillside Primary School, Gowriehill Primary School, Claypotts Primary School, Newfields Primary School, St Pius Primary School, Whitfield Primary School. 2. 5 Cashback investment helping women s football grow The Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Kenny MacAskill MSP, recently visited Brechin High School to witness first-hand the essential role that Cashback for Communities plays in advancing women s and girls football in Scotland. The Cabinet Secretary joined the women's national coach, Anna Signeul, and Sheila Begbie, head of girls' and women's football, as 70 S1 and S2 pupils were put through their paces in front of the six new Scottish FA Girls'/ Women's Football Development Officers. The creation of these six new posts was made possible thanks to support from Cashback for Communities. These officers will be responsible for increasing the number of registered players in the game by 1500 players per year and help to develop girls and women s football in Scotland. Previous investment through CashBack has supported the Scottish FA to work with the Elite women s clubs (Premier League) to increase the amount of training from twice per week to four or five times per week and, in some cases, 10 times per week. Commenting, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said, Women s football is going from strength to strength in Scotland. The recent successes and achievements in the game have been outstanding. With ever increasing numbers of girls taking up football, the appointment of six new club development officers will attract more registered players to the game, giving them the opportunity to participate in our favourite sport for longer. 3. Kenny MacAskill, Anna Signuel and the 6 new club development officers. This has been made possible thanks to Scottish Government Cashback for Communities funding, a programme that makes crime pay by seizing crooks cash and investing it in the young people of Scotland through an ever growing series of sports and cultural diversionary and personal development activities. Sheila Begbie, Head of Girls'/Women's Football, added: More and more girls are playing football in Scotland however the majority are not playing within the formal football structure as whilst there are 27,000 girls playing football, there are only 2500 registered players playing within clubs. These six new development officers will be charged with increasing the number of registered players in the game by 1500 players per annum. They will also work to support the development of the structure and infrastructure of the existing clubs to ensure we support the integration of some of these new players and to establish new clubs where existing clubs are at capacity or there are no clubs in the local area. Our new officer is no stranger to the region with the funding allowing Sam Milne to continue her role support girls and women s football across the region. Please contact Sam with any queries. 5
Futsal Activity Twenty five 4v4 coaches from Dundee enjoyed their first taste of Futsal at a coaching in service on Saturday 29th October. The coaches were put through their paces by Stephen Chatila from Perth Youth Futsal and Perth Saltires. Building on the back of the Saltires hosting the preliminary round of the UEFA Futsal Cup the coaches learned the basic ethos and rules of Futsal coupled with getting a practical feel of the game. The event coincided with Dundee City Council 4v4 programme moving indoors over the winter months. The programme has seen around 150 boys play 4v4 football every Saturday morning. Futsal aims to develop footballers by using a small pitch with a smaller ball with a reduced bounce which results in Futsal players enjoying lots of touches of the ball, the need to develop excellent ball control and the need for players to be creative - all attributes we hope to develop in young footballers. Unlike traditional 5 a sides Futsal is played to court lines thus reducing the tactic of smashing the ball against the wall to get out of a tight space meaning that playing Futsal is a great method of developing passing, support, player movement and creative play. Futsal 5 players on court - rolling subs Played to lines - kick ins All players allowed in box No ball height restriction Futsal Ball (30% reduced bounce) Players creatively find methods out of tight corners Or Traditional 5 a sides 5 players on court - limited subs no lines - use walls for rebounds. Ball always in play Only GK allowed in box Ball must stay below head height Size 5 ball Player blast ball of the wall to get out of tight situations Futsal is the only form of 5 a side football which is recognised by FIFA and UEFA and as such is a growing game - championed by the fact that the majority of the Spanish and Brazilian football squads are developed via the vehicle of Futsal. Football Development Officer for Dundee, Gavin Tinley has created two 4v4 Futsal centres to allow for 4v4 football to continue over the winter months. This has seen around 100 children play futsal each week across the city. Further info is available from Gavin on: gavin.tinley@leisureandculturedundee.com 6
Many of you would have already received information on the Focus on Youth campaign which aims to capture data on the number of footballers and volunteers playing 4 and 7 a side football. The Scottish FA are committed to giving all children of all ages and abilities the opportunity to flourish in our national game. The future World Cup stars of tomorrow need to be nurtured today. Through our many initiatives, we are determined to ensure the continued growth of grassroots football which, in turn, will help create a path from youth participation to elite international performance and create new heroes in the men's and women's games. In order to achieve this, we need your help. The Scottish FA are currently conducting the game s biggest-ever football census to discover how many of us play the game, who they are, where they are and who supports them in their development. Completing this census will enable us to update the number of active participants, help us understand current trends in our game and better allocate resources relating to children s football. Whilst collecting the associated coach and volunteer information will also allow the Scottish FA to better support and develop the volunteers and coaches who underpin our national game on a daily basis. Therefore if you have received a form please complete and return it ASAP, also if you haven t received the form and should have please let us know. Prize draws will be held as the campaign unfolds giving all who return the information the chance to win a prize to help them continue their work in football. More information can be viewed at 7
Planning Permission Granted for 2 East Region Clubs 2 East Region clubs have been celebrating successful planning applications to develop their own football facilities. Letham Community Sports Club and Dundee East Community Sports Club were both successful with plans to develop 3G surfaces at their home grounds. Letham s plans include the construction of a full size 3G pitch at 7 Acres in Perth whilst Dundee East were successful with their plans for a 3g 60x40 training area adjacent to Whitton Park and the Douglas Sports Centre. Both clubs have been allocated funds from Cashback to support their projects and the granting of planning permission is one step closer for them both to achieve their dreams. The next step for both is to press ahead with the tendering process with construction hopefully starting early in the New Year. Well done to all involved and a huge thank you must go to the support both clubs have received from their local authorities, Cashback and sportscotland. 8
