1 OTTERY ST MARY YOUTH FC Newsletter Autumn 2016 Washbrook Meadows, Butts road, Ottery St Mary In this issue On the field Off the field Social Round-Up FA Charter Standard FA Respect Code As summer now seems a somewhat distant memory and the weather turns dramatically colder it seemed like a good time to look at some of the many events and achievements so far this season. The Under 7s have started their playing careers with a series of mini-tournaments, the first of which was hosted at Ottery. Our older age groups have been in competitive action our Under 15s are currently second in their division, while the Under 14s are sitting 4 th. The newly formed Under 12s are beginning to settle into their new division. Football news On the field At present we have 95 children playing, and enjoying, their football at the club, a reflection of the hard work put in by all our coaches. There have been many highlights so far but just to pick a couple it has been particularly pleasing to see the a new under 12 team in action and also an under 7 team playing competitive football for the first time! Well done to all the coaches and players on a successful start to the season, and a belated welcome to all new players and coaches, hopefully you will be enjoying your football with us for many years to come. As we write the under 11s are enjoying a great run in the cup and are unbeatable in the League. The Under 9s were also enjoying cup success, while the Under 8s were enjoying the challenge of regular weekend games. Following on from very successful sign on evening in July, when lots of subs were collected, football played and parents had the chance to have a drink and relax at the club, a number of other events have taken place. The FA has asked us to host key events, such as a Charter Standard meeting for all clubs in East Devon and a First Aid Workshop. Coaches and parents have also given up their time to plan, organise and run some very successful social events for the children.

2 Rusty Pig sponsors our Under 8s Most recently Simon Harris s under 8 team had a shirt presentation night and meal at their new sponsors The Rusty Pig. The team look fantastic in their new kit and managed to keep the pizza off it. So a big thank you to Simon and Robyn from the Rusty Pig for organising this. Last weekend as the Tar Barrels were taking place a small group of volunteers were organising car parking at the club. Within a few hours of opening every space on the front training pitches was taken raising valuable funds for the football club and also the carnival committee. Thank you to all those who helped out, particularly to Monty and Warren who again gave up their time. FA Charter Standard Launched in 2001, The FA Charter Standard Programme supported by McDonald s is The FA s accreditation scheme for grassroots clubs and leagues. Bye-Bye Danny In October the under 9 s lost one of their coaches as Danny Butterfield took up a coaching position with Southampton FC. Marc and Katie Gethin, with the help of a number of parents, organised a leaving party at the club. The club was packed with families keen to say thank you to Danny and wish the Butterfield s good luck. The party went on for most of the afternoon with a vast spread of lovely food, lots of football and an almost lost for words Danny at the end! Its goal is to raise standards in grassroots football, support the development of clubs and leagues, recognising and rewarding them for their commitment and achievements. With this in mind, The FA Charter Standard accreditation is awarded to clubs and leagues rigorously adjudged to be well-run and sustainable and which prioritise child protection, quality coaching and implementation of the Respect programme. Fundraising / Community Events The comedy night held on the October the 24th at the football club was a massive success! On the night the club was packed and there was a fantastic atmosphere. Three entertaining comedians and a local compere kept the audience entertained for a number of hours. So much so that around 1500 was spent at the bar! Well done to those who organised such a fun and entertaining evening and to Craig for cooking and serving such lovely food. 2 Ottery St Mary Youth FC has been a Charter Standard club for over 5 years. All our coaches are accredited at least at Level 1. All have undertaken DBS checks, and have attended Safeguarding and First Aid Courses. In return we have access to an FA mentor, a few free Nike footballs each season, access to the McDonald s FA Charter Standard Kit Scheme to

3 receive one free Nike team kit each season, and reduced prices at FA courses. Respect The FA is responding to concern from across the game to tackle unacceptable behaviour in football. The FA is taking action in a variety of ways, and one of the main actions is the Respect programme. It is not a short-lived campaign but on ongoing commitment to improve behaviour in football. It won t be solved in the short term as we all have a lot of work to do over the seasons ahead. One of the main aims of Respect is to help recruit and retain enough Referees for the requirements of our game at all levels. We all know that a game without a trained and impartial referee cannot be played properly. In 2008 the number of registered Referees had fallen to an all time low with many referees dropping out, mainly due to the abuse they receive on the pitch and from the sidelines. Respect aims to improve the environment of the game and so improve the experience of everyone involved particularly Referees. Respect needs our club and our players and supporters to play our part. Together, we can make a huge difference - Respect is the collective responsibility of everyone in football to create a fair, safe and enjoyable environment in which the game can take place. What do we want to achieve with Respect? 1. There will be a step change in youth football on what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour from parents, spectators and coaches. 2. We will work with coaches to create an enjoyable learning environment for children s football 3. There will be a base of registered referees in England sufficient for the demands of the game at every level. 4. There will be zero tolerance for assault on referees. 5. There will be an improvement in on-field player discipline, particularly in the area of dissent to referees and in competitions that have an established record of poor discipline. The most important message of the Respect programme is that real and lasting change will come about not through the intervention of the Football Authorities but from everyone in football taking collective responsibility to promote what is good in the game and deal with that which diminishes it. Kitchen Over the summer a lot of effort was put into improving the kitchen facilities within the club. Marc Gethin and Martin took a lead in updating the facilities so that they were of a required standard. Well done and thank you, you have done a great job. Caroline Thornton aided by Millie and Megan have been putting the new kitchen to good use. As well as providing post-match meals for the first team and visitors they have also been opening up at some youth section matches. Parents at Under 7 and 8 matches on the front pitches have been particularly appreciative. They must have made and sold 3

4 hundreds of cups of tea, coffee and bacon butties so far this season, selling out on a number of occasions! Whilst raising valuable funds for the club they have made watching games an even more enjoyable experience for many. This proved to be a very interesting and informative evening and equipped all those present with a greater understanding of how to identify and deal with a variety of injuries. Meet the Coaches This week Under 15s The workshop focussed on the most common types of injuries sprains, cuts, head injuries and asthma, and was very practical in nature. The course was well attended and hopefully Devon FA will use Ottery FC for future courses. For parents, please check out the FA concussion guide on where you can download a booklet or read online. Guess the Ground? Can you identify this football league ground? Craig has been working with the Under 15s since 2009 when they were Under 8s. During which time they have moved from 5-a-side to 11-a-side. Craig holds the Level 2 coaching qualification and is also currently club chairman. Answer at the end of this newsletter. First Aid Course 4

5 Main Club News The Adult Section is currently running two teams the men s first team and a newly formed Ladies eleven. The men are currently playing in Division 4 of the Devon and Exeter League after two successive promotions. They also won the Golesworthy cup last season. The team combines some experienced players with some younger players from recent youth teams. Managed by Dave Fairweather, the team aim to play good, quick passing football and have their eye fixed firmly on developing the team over the next few years. Matches take place at 3.00pm on a Saturday and spectators are always welcome, with the bar open and hot drinks always available. Club House and Bar Just a reminder that as part of your child s subscription you have family membership of the club and are welcome to come down and use the facilities. As well as our Big Screen TV, showing major sporting events, we offer Pool and Darts, as well as a skittle alley. This is their first season together and it is great to see so many wanting to carry on with their football. The team play in Division One of the Devon Women s League. 6 The Committee The club only exists because of the many people who give up their free time to help out. The Committee is our main means of running the club and we are all volunteers. We are always looking out for people to help out and for local businesses to help with sponsorship.
