6 Why Respect? Concern from the top of the game and from the grass roots Abuse towards referees, a lack of referees in the grass roots game and poor sideline behaviour particularly in youth football Two high profile incidents in the Premier League in March 2008 Parents/Coaches and Players told us Enough is enough A tipping point had been reached in public tolerance

7 When the beautiful game turns ugly. Polegate youth game ends in violence The 15-year-old player was then set upon and thrown to the floor by a 24- year-old Southwick linesman. He threw Reed to the ground before another Southwick player, who had earlier been sent off was said to have run back on to the field and kicked the Polegate player in the head. The junior football final wrecked by parents brawling in the stand Police had to be called to a junior football match after a 'Wild West-style' brawl involving dozens of parents broke out.the fighting began after a woman threw beer over another parent, and spread from the touchline to the stand. A 15-year-old player was handcuffed and led away for questioning by officers after the referee took both teams off the pitch. As the boy's mother came over to protect her child, a punch was thrown at her before she was spat in the face.

10 Respect Update Respect Leagues There are 670 Leagues that have signed up for Respect and 203 of these are currently considered by the CFA to be fully implementing the Respect measures. The focus of CFA s work is to work with all Leagues so that they are fully operational. The FA Chief Executive has written to all Respect leagues and those yet to sign up requesting their commitment Production of Certificates for supportive Leagues
