17 Sample lesson plan Lesson Plan Topic: Dribbling for Penetration Age group: U10 Organization Diagram Coaching Points Free Dribble: players dribble freely throughout the grid (20 x 25 yds). Players work on moves. Select a few players to add passive pressure by jogging at the dribblers. Head up; bent knees; ball close to body; change speed; change direction 1v1 competition: set up many 1v1 fields (10 x 15 yds.), side by side. Assign 6 players to each field; 3 players at each goal. 2 play while 4 rest for 30 second bouts. 3v3 to four goals: Each team of 3 defends 2 goals and attacks the other 2 goals. Field wider than longer (25 x 30 yds.) 2 points are awarded when a player dribbles thru their opponent s goals. 1 point is awarded for a pass thru a goal. 6v6 scrimmage: play a 6v6 match. Field size: 70 x 50 yds. Body feint or dribbling movement to throw the defender one way; perform the feint early enough to beat the opponent; change of direction; change of speed; explode past the defender Reinforce the points listed in the activities listed above. Use teammates as decoys fake the pass to teammates and dribble by opponents. Reinforce the points listed in the activities above. Correct team attacking shape to provide options to dribble for penetration.

19 Coaching Coach Considerations use the Coach s Toolkit Allow the conditions of the game to coach the theme Coach at natural stoppages Coach in the flow of the game Coach individual players as game continues Coach using the freeze method freeze, correct, rehearse, restart

20 Coaching DO s Be a positive coach highlight the good stuff! Use guided discovery to help your players solve problems; guided discovery is the art of asking good questions that require more than a yes or no answer. Demand excellence from the players.

21 Coaching DO s Connect your coaching points to visual and verbal cues in the activity; this helps to paint good, soccer pictures for your players. Do justice to the most important coaching principle OBSERVATION! Watch your players play so that when you have a question to ask or some info to share, it will be valuable. (you will be able to rewind the video)

22 Coaching DO s Make the session challenging and competitive incentives, restrictions, award points (keep score), offside, etc. Do your best to interact with every player, in a positive way, each training session. Adhere to and enforce coach, parent and player protocols.

23 Coaching Don ts Don t punish players for mistakes or poor performance. Don t be nega0ve or sarcas0c in your body language or words. Don t use generic coaching terms during the training ac0vi0es. Don t commentate throughout the session.

24 Se_ng Up the Environment Set up a neat and organized (safe) training environment Set up the session from scrimmage (stage 4) to warm- up (stage 1), if possible. This will allow a smooth transi0on from stage to stage, elimina0ng set- up 0me following each stage.

25 Final thoughts Find ways to make the training environment competitive and challenging. Be a positive coach (role model) highlight the GOOD! Demand technical precision! Hold players accountable for their decisions on the field. Keep the session flowing.
