FALL 2017 U9 REC COACHES MEETING U9 REC COACHES MEETING THE ROLE OF THE COACH 1. WHY AM I COACHING? 2. WHAT DO I BELIEVE THE PLAYERS SHOULD GET FROM THEIR EXPERIENCE PLAYING SOCCER? 3. HOW CAN I HELP THEM GET THAT SOCCER EXPERIENCE? FALL 2017 & SPRING
YOU NEED TO ASK YOURSELF: U9 REC COACHES MEETING THE ROLE OF THE COACH HOW SHOULD CHILDREN BE TAUGHT? HOW SHOULD THE GAME OF SOCCER BE TAUGHT? WHAT SHOULD WELL-PLAYED SOCCER LOOK LIKE? HOW DOES ONE DEVELOP THE LOVE OF THE GAME IN CHILDREN? WHAT EXPERIENCE SHOULD YOUR PLAYERS COME AWAY WITH? ALL QUESTIONS ABOVE SHOW THE IMPORTANCE OF FOCUSING ON THE PROCESS, NOT JUST ON THE OUTCOME. COACHES AREN T JUDGED ON THE OUTCOME OF GAMES, BUT ON THE QUALITY OF COACHING PROVIDED AND WHETHER OR NOT YOU CAN KEEP PLAYERS INTERESTED TO CONTINUE TO PLAY SOCCER FROM YEAR TO YEAR. U9 REC COACHES MEETING THE ROLE OF THE COACH Remember why the children are there and why they leave: THEY PLAY TO: HAVE FUN LEARN AND IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS BE WITH FRIENDS EXPERIENCE THE EXCITEMENT OF COMPETITION ENHANCE THEIR PHYSICAL FITNESS DEMONSTRATE THEIR COMPETENCE They leave when they: Are not having fun Fail to learn or improve their skills Are not with their friends Lack the opportunity for improvisation and creativity Lack exercise, meaningful movement and fitness improvements Lack optimal challenges and/or experience consistent failure FALL 2017 & SPRING
U9 REC COACHES MEETING THE ROLE OF THE COACH SOME PRACTICAL SUGGESTIONS: AVOID A "WIN AT ALL COST" ATTITUDE. AVOID OVER TRAINING, LONG, REPETITIVE PRACTICES AND EXCESSIVE TIME AND TRAVEL DEMANDS. REMEMBER TO MAKE SOCCER FUN. AVOID USING PERFECTION AS THE STANDARD FOR JUDGING A PLAYER S PERFORMANCE. DON'T ASSOCIATE A PLAYER'S WORTH OR VALUE AS A PERSON WITH THEIR PERFORMANCE AND ABILITY ON THE SOCCER FIELD (I.E. WINNING OR A GREAT PERFORMANCE MEANS THAT I LIKE YOU MORE). MAKE SURE THAT YOUR NON-VERBAL BEHAVIORS ARE CONSISTENT WITH YOUR WORDS AND THAT YOU ARE CONSISTENT ACROSS SITUATIONS. U9 REC COACHES MEETING THE ROLE OF THE COACH SERVE AS A POSITIVE ROLE MODEL: 1. DEMONSTRATE RESPECT FOR STAFF, TEAM MEMBERS, OPPONENTS, REFEREES, AND PARENTS. 2. SHOW A RESPONSIBILITY TO THE GAME ITSELF. 3. ENCOURAGE HEALTHY HABITS. HELP PLAYERS TO DRINK WATER INSTEAD OF SUGARY BEVERAGES, AND FUEL UP ON HEALTHY FOODS LIKE FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. THESE HEALTHY HABITS WILL BENEFIT THEM LONG AFTER THE SEASON ENDS. *SEE THE COACHING HEALTHY HABITS TRAINING FOR MORE DETAIL ( FALL 2017 & SPRING
U9 REC COACHES MEETING THE ROLE OF THE COACH MOST IMPORTANTLY: UNDERSTAND WHO YOU ARE COACHING 1. CHILDREN ARE NOT DEFINED BY CHRONOLOGICAL AGE ONLY. EACH CHILD MATURES AND DEVELOPS AT HIS/HER OWN PACE. 2. TREAT EACH CHILD AS AN INDIVIDUAL. 3. RECOGNIZE THAT EACH CHILD'S NEEDS ARE DIFFERENT AND THEY PARTICIPATE FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. U9 REC COACHES MEETING THE ROLE OF THE COACH SOCCER ALSO INVOLVES THE ELEMENT OF "CHAOS." OPPONENTS, TEAMMATES AND THE BALL ARE ALL MOVING IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. PLAYERS, PARENTS AND COACHES ARE SHOUTING DIFFERENT INSTRUCTIONS AND INFORMATION. BRINGING "ORDER OUT OF CHAOS" IS AN IMPORTANT SKILL IN LEARNING HOW TO PLAY THE GAME. FALL 2017 & SPRING
U9 REC COACHES MEETING THE ROLE OF THE PROFESSIONAL TRAINER THE TRAINER IS RESPONSIBLE FOR RUNNING 1PRACTICE A WEEK ALL TRAINING IS BASED ON AN AGE APPROPRIATE CURRICULUM DEVELOPED BY THE WSA AND THE RED BULLS TRAINING ORGANIZATION TRAINING NEEDS TO BE ECONOMICAL USE THE LIMITED TIME THAT WE HAVE EFFECTIVELY PARENT COACHES ARE ENCOURAGED TO ASSIST THE TRAINERS (NOT RUN THE SESSION) ON SATURDAY. THE ROLE OF THE COACH THE JEKYLL AND HYDE EFFECT PARENTS AND COACHES ALIKE, HAVE A TENDENCY TO CHANGE PERSONALITY ONCE THERE IS SOMETHING AT STAKE, OR THINK THERE IS SOMETHING AT STAKE, AND QUICKLY LOOSE PERSPECTIVE. LOCAL GAMES (INTERCOUNTY GAMES FOR EXAMPLE) ARE TREATED AS IF WE ARE COACHING THE WORLD CUP OR CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL, WITH MILLIONS OF $ AT STAKE. THE PRESSURE AND THE BEHAVIOR OF ADULTS AT MANY UNIMPORTANT GAMES CAN RUIN THE GAME FOR CHILDREN. FALL 2017 & SPRING
1. PLAYERS ARE ALLOWED TO MAKE MISTAKES! 2. PROCESS BASED COACHING WINNING IS A POSITIVE BYPRODUCT OF DEVELOPMENT 3. ONE VOICE ON THE SIDELINE PROVIDE AGE APPROPRIATE FEEDBACK & INFORMATION THAT WILL HELP IMPROVE THE OVERALL STANDARD OF PLAY 4. PLAYING TIME MANAGE PLAYING TIME TO ENSURE EVERY CHILD GET S THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOWCASE HIS/HER ABILITY (CLUB POLICY - EVERYBODY NEEDS TO PLAY AT LEAST HALF A GAME)* 5. PLAY DIFFERENT POSITIONS * 6. LIMIT THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON THE COACHES SIDELINE IT IS A GOOD IDEA TO WORK OUT A SUBBING PATTERN AHEAD OF EACH GAME, HOWEVER, USE YOUR BEST JUDGMENT AND ASSESS WHAT THE GAME NEEDS AS WELL. FOR EXAMPLE: IF YOU ARE WINNING BY SEVERAL GOALS THIS MIGHT BE A GOOD OPPORTUNITY TO PUT 1 OF YOUR WEAKER GOALPLAYERS IN THE NET. COACHING OR CONTROLLING? WHAT/WHO WILL MOST COACHES FOCUS ON IN THIS SITUATION? WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE AND WHY? FALL 2017 & SPRING
COACHING OR CONTROLLING? ALLOW PLAYERS TO MAKE A DECISION ON THE BALL LOOK AT THE TEAM SHAPE FIX IT IS THERE SUPPORT OFF THE BALL? THE PLAYER ON THE BALL CAN HOPEFULLY MAKE A GOOD DECISION COACHING OR CONTROLLING? IMPROVED TEAM SHAPE GIVEN THE GAME SITUATION 1 ST ATTACKER IS PROVIDED WITH SUPPORT OFF THE BALL HOPEFULLY HELPS THE 1 ST ATTACKER MAKE A DECISION ON THE BALL THIS IS COACHING! FALL 2017 & SPRING
UNDERSTANDING THE PRINCIPLES OF PLAY Principles of attack Penetration Shoot, dribble, pass, run with ball Support Angles and distance Width/depth Mobility Create and exploit space Improvisation Flair Principles of defense Pressure Deny, delay, and divide Cover Angles and distance Compactness Horizontal and vertical Balance Control and restraint Patience UNDERSTANDING THE PRINCIPLES OF PLAY Player role Principle 1 st attacker Penetration 2 nd attacker Support 3 rd attacker Width and depth 1 st defender Pressure delay 2 nd defender Cover 3 rd defender Balance FALL 2017 & SPRING
UNDERSTANDING THE PRINCIPLES OF PLAY AGE APPROPRIATE PRIORITIES Priorities at U8 The dawn of technique: Me and my ball 1. Develop creativity and confidence on the ball 1 st attacker 2. When to dribble and when to pass 1st and 2nd attacker Promote problem solving / decision making 3. Continue to develop the basic motors kills 4. Understand the difference between offense/defense Although the emphasis is heavily on the develop of the basic technique needed to become a better player, all players need to be exposed to game like situations which include decisions. Otherwise they will struggle to retain everything they have learned. UNDERSTANDING THE PRINCIPLES OF PLAY AGE APPROPRIATE PRIORITIES Priorities at U9 The dawn of tactics. Me, my ball and my partner" 1. Team shape width, length and depth 1 st attacker(penetration), 2 nd attacker (support) and 3 rd attacker (depth) 2. Decisions on the ball 1 st attacker Linked to the team shape/support off the ball 3. Support of the ball 2 nd attacker (support angles and distance) 4. 1v1 defending 1 st defender (pressure/delay) 5. Introduce players to the role of the goalplayer Both as the 1 st attacker and the last defender FALL 2017 & SPRING
PRE GAME PREPARATION 1. WORK OUT A WARM UP ROUTINE FOR YOUR TEAM. AVOID LINES/STANDING AROUND (IDEAS FOR AND IMPORTANCE OF WARM UP WILL BE OUTLINED USING ANOTHER SLIDE). 2. ADDRESS 2 3 TOPICS YOU WANT YOUR PLAYERS TO FOCUS ON FOR EXAMPLE: TEAM SHAPE BIG IN POSSESSION OF THE BALL CAN YOU MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE TO RECEIVE A PASS FROM A TEAMMATE? CONTROL THE BALL AND EITHER DRIBBLE OR PASS THE BALL (NO KICKING OR BOOTING AWAY OF THE BALL). 3. REMIND PLAYERS OF THE POSITIONS THEY WILL BE PLAYING 4. DIVIDE RESPONSBILITIES AMOUNG ALL COACHES PRE GAME PREPARATION WARM UP U9 PRE GAME WARM UP (ALL CONTENT DISCUSSED IS AVAILABLE IN THE COACHES CORNER ON THE WSA WEBSITE). PHASE 1 DRIBBLING ALL PLAYERS WITH A BALL. INCREASE PRESSURE BY ADDING DEFENDERS. PHASE 2 PASSING AND RECEIVING WITH A PARTNER. EXERCISES CAN BE MADE MORE COMPLEX BY ADDING DEFENDERS (COACHES CAN SERVE AS DEFENDERS). PHASE 3 PLAY SOME SMALL SIDED GAMES (2V2 / 3V3 / 4V4). NOTE 1: NO STATIC STRETCHING BEFORE A GAME NOTE 2: NO NEED FOR LINES IN FRONT OF THE GOAL FALL 2017 & SPRING
PRE GAME PREPARATION WARM UP SPORTS SCIENCE TODAY IS CLEAR THAT PLAYERS SHOULD NOT PERFORM SUSTAINED, STATIC STRECTHES DURING PRE GAME WARM UP. THESE CAN BE DAMAGING TO COLD MUSCLES AND DETRIMENTAL TO THE POWER AND QUICKNESS FOR SPORTS PERFORMANCE. DYNAMIC STRETCHING (DYNAMIC MOBILITY) VS STATIC STRETCHING Dynamic stretching before activity prepares the muscles, joints and neuromuscular connections. Static stretching after activity reestablishes hard-working muscles to resting lengths, an important part of recovery. Dynamic stretching Lengthening of the muscles as the body moves through the normal range of motion around a joint or joints. Static stretching lengthening of the muscles in static, stilled or holding position. U9 SOCCER RULES/REGULATIONS 1. NO HEADING ALLOWED 2. NO PUNTING 3. BUILD OUT LINE 4. OFFSIDE FALL 2017 & SPRING
1. NO HEADING ALLOWED U9 SOCCER RULES/REGULATIONS DELIBERATE HEADING IS NOT ALLOWED IN U10 & U12 GAMES IF A PLAYER DELIBERATELY HEADS THE BALL IN A GAME, AN INDIRECT FREE KICK SHOULD BE AWARDED TO THE OPPOSING TEAM FROM THE SPOT OF THE OFFENSE. IF THE DELIBERATE HEADER OCCURS WITHIN THE GOAL AREA, THE INDIRECT FREE KICK SHOULD BE TAKEN ON THE GOAL AREA LINE PARALLEL TO THE GOAL LINE AT THE NEAREST POINT TO WHERE THE INFRINGEMENT OCCURRED. All part of the recognize to recover program initiated by US Soccer in the Fall of NO PUNTING 3. BUILD OUT LINE U9 SOCCER RULES/REGULATIONS 7 v 7 Build-Out Line: The purpose of the Build Out Line (BOL) is to promote playing the ball out of the back in a less pressured setting. It also denotes where offside offences can be called. MAKING OF THE BUILD OUT LINE The BOL is equidistant from the penalty area line and the halfway line. It can be painted on the field or marked with flags or cones. GOAL KICKS Defenders/Opponents may not pass the BOL until the ball has left the penalty area. The ball is in play when it leaves the penalty area. Repeat the goal kick for an infraction. FALL 2017 & SPRING
2. NO PUNTING 3. BUILD OUT LINE U9 SOCCER RULES/REGULATIONS BALL IN GOALKEEPERS HANDS AFTER A SAVE 1. Opponents must retreat behind the BOL before they can pressure the ball/attacking team. 2. The opponent must remain passive and cannot pressure the ball if they have not retreated beyond the BOL. 3. If an opponent pressures the ball before retreating beyond the BOL, an IFK is awarded to the attacking team at the point of the infraction. Players that are not involved in the play are considered passive and need not be penalized. 4. Goalkeepers must throw, roll or play with their feet to put the ball into play. GAME DAY COACHING UNDERSTANDING THE BUILD OUT LINE FALL 2017 & SPRING
4. OFFSIDE U9 SOCCER RULES/REGULATIONS Players cannot be penalized for an offside offense between the halfway line and the BOL. Players can be penalized for an offside offense between the BOL and the goal line GAME DAY COACHING BOL - OFFSIDE FALL 2017 & SPRING
SYSTEM OF PLAY 7V7 U9 & U10 GAME DAY COACHING SYSTEM OF PLAY 7V7 (FROM TO ) FALL 2017 & SPRING
GAME DAY COACHING SYSTEM OF PLAY 7V7 (FROM TO ) SYSTEM OF PLAY 7V7 SOCCER / FALL 2017 & SPRING
SYSTEM OF PLAY 7V7 SOCCER : PROVIDES WIDTH IN THE ATTACK - 4 PLAYERS ARE ABLE TO COMMIT TO THE ATTACK. MIDFIELDERS HELP OUT IN OFFENSE AND DEFENSE #1: DEVELOP A GOALPLAYER OR SWEEPER KEEPER. HE/SHE PLAYS AHEAD OF THE LINE. #4 - #5: DEFENDERS DEVELOP THE ABILITY TO DEFEND 1V1 (NOT JUST 1 STRONG CB) #4 - #5: FOCUS ON THE FIRST 2 PRINCIPLES OF DEFENSE (PRESSURE/COVER) SYSTEM OF PLAY 7V7 SOCCER #6: DEVELOP A PLAYMAKER. SOMEONE WHO CAN CONTROL THE PACE/RHYTHM OF THE GAME (PROVIDES SUPPORT UNDERNEATH THE FRONT 3) DEVELOP WINGBACKS/FULLBACKS: PLAYERS LEARN TO PLAY BOTH OUTSIDE WING AND OUTSIDE BACK #9: A PLAYER CAPABLE OF PLAYING WITH BOTH HIS/HER BACK AND HER FACE TOWARDS THE OPPONENTS GOAL FALL 2017 & SPRING
SYSTEM OF PLAY 7V7 SOCCER LARGE DEMAND ON THE MIDFIELDERS MIDFIELDERS DO NEED TO BE DISCIPLINED WHEN TRACKING BACK #9 CAN BECOME ISOLATED IF NOT SUPPORTED WELL U9 REC COACHES MEETING UNDERSTANDING PLAYER DEVELOPMENT Success should be measured by demonstrated and documented improvement of each individual (not results). The role of a youth trainer is to improve the skills and habits of each and every footballer in his or her charge. Ironically, if they improve each player, team results improve.
