Mission Statement Soccer Domain Football Club (SDFC) was established for the specific purpose of developing a competitive youth soccer program whose goals are to develop players and teams that can compete at state, regional, and national levels. The realization of these goals will be accomplished within the proper framework of developing character traits such as self-esteem, confidence, leadership and sportsmanship. Achievement of these objectives will be reached through the mature behavior, high level of training and exemplary conduct of the coaches, parents, and officials of the Club. The SDFC program aspires to create an environment within which: - Players will be given the opportunity to learn the sport of soccer through the development of individual skills, fitness, teamwork, and fair play. - Players will reach their maximum potential as individuals and athletes through coaching, competition, friendships, and commitment - to themselves, their teammates, and the game of soccer. - The sport of soccer will be utilized to teach life's important values including integrity, honesty, dedication, teamwork, and respect for the laws of the games.
Expectations of a Soccer Team Definition of Team: A team is a small number of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, performance goals, and approach for which they are mutually accountable." (Katzenbach and Smith, 1993) In soccer, there are basic characteristics that differentiate a group of players from a soccer team. Common Purpose In teams, there is an understanding that mutual support is important for the accomplishment of team and individual player goals. You do not sacrifice your responsibility for supporting the team for your own individual agendas. Through mutual support great achievements are made with a team. A Sense of Ownership Each player feels a sense of ownership in their respective positions for the goals and achievements of the team. Players, coaches, and parents demonstrate a commitment to the principles and goals of the team. Creativity Each player contributes to the overall success of the team and individual player development through the application of their own individual talents, experience, knowledge and creativity to objectives. Communication Each player on a team should feel trust to communicate feelings, questions, observations and opinions to hold themselves and others responsible for individual and team performance. As with any group conflicts will arise, when you are a part of a team you view conflicts as an opportunity for growth and creativity for new ideas. Conflicts should be resolved quickly in a direct constructive manner. Personal Support Each player on a team should feel supported for individual growth and development. Respect Each player on a team has an assumption of good faith and competence in another person and in one s self. Depth of integrity, trust, complementary moral values, and skill are necessary components. Leadership On a soccer team, players work in a structured environment, they know what boundaries exist and who has final authority. The coach sets agreed high standards of performance and he / she is respected via active, willing participation.
Program Goals SDFC is a soccer development program aimed at competing at the highest level of competition. The program is designed to select the best players available at try-out and provide a training regime that will improve them as players and in turn, improve the team. The focus is still on technical development throughout their time with SDFC. Match Playing Style The team will be encouraged to play an attacking style based upon possession and confident ball movement in all positions. The style will be based around playing out of the back and through midfield and developing the variation in tempo when to play patient, when to play quick. Position Specific A team must be organized defensively, keeping their specific positions in the formation. However, players will look for spaces and movements to support forward when attacking by moving away from their original positions. Players in ALL positions have to be confident in playing both sides of the ball. It s important for the individual players to recognize the importance of their role when the team has possession and when the opposition has possession. Physical The physical components at this age will be based on improving the A, B, C s Ability, Balance, Co-ordination through soccer specific training activities.
U9 Expectations: Players TECHNICAL Players should be able to reach 30 Juggles. Knowledge and increased quality of execution while performing identified SDFC 1v1 moves and turns, building pressure as always. Players should have the technique to play clean 1 touch passes. Players should be able to open hips for composed finishing, as well as identify good shooting areas against a goalkeeper. Players should be able to loft a pass over an opponent s head and display increased proficiency with inside of the foot curled pass/shoot. TACTICAL Ability to volley with laces and inside of foot to redirect for a pass or shot. ATT: Ability to create and play 1-2s, off the shoulder of defenders, overlaps and developing 3 rd man running. Ability to switch the play from wing to wing in 2 passes. PHYSICAL PSYCHOLOGICAL DEF: Continued development in pressure, cover, balance and recovery. Developing ABC s including change of direction and footwork. Players playing with head up/scanning. Team leaders helping to guide players with equipment, practices etc. Players driven to have an impact, playing and training with purpose and wanting to get on the ball. Positive communication with team mates, praise, guidance and game information.
U9 Expectations: Coach TECHNICAL Maintain intensity on quality and repetition of the specified SDFC 1v1 moves, turns and stop start moves. Utilize game pictures and small group combination play to continue technical practice for passing & receiving. Build towards goal when appropriate, working on finishing technique and mentality. Develop range and variety of pass, incorporating in combinations related to style of play when appropriate. TACTICAL Increased activity with opposition, building from passive, to overloads increasing success rate before gradually increasing difficulty. ATT: Incorporate style of play characteristics and combinations etc into technical practice and small sided games, giving players a basic picture of how to use techniques and when. Using carefully planned technical practice and game related practices, build pictures with high repetition of 1-2 s, playing off the shoulder, overlaps and 3 rd man running. Short, sharp verbal guidance and key words from sidelines. Allow flow for maximum repetition, prompting tempo & quality amongst other dominant coaching points. PHYSICAL PSYCHOLOGICAL DEF: During full pressure 1v1 s and game activities, encourage defenders to win the ball back as soon as possible. During 2v1s, 2v2s guidance can be give to pressure and balance. This is not a focus but guidance should be given. Technique work and tag games with and without the ball will aid ABC development and change of direction. Footwork activities should be incorporated into session for minutes per week. Challenge players to play with head up. Activities given for players in groups to set up and organize themselves. Players should be allowed time to play and figure out problems themselves rather than being spoon fed all the time. If something breaks down allow them time to work it out. Step in if too much time wasted. Repetitive use of SDFC Buzz Words & EYE CONTACT!
U9 Expectations: Team Game Play WARM UPS Commence 45mins prior to the game. Equipment neatly lined up (behind bench if present). Technical: Skills warm up, finishing with small sided game (create overloads for attacking success). TACTICAL FORMATION ATT: Starting to possess the ball with patience in build up play. Showing knowledge of when to go forward with team combinations. Quick switches of play. TEAM TALK KO/HT DEF: Applying pressure high up the field, develop basic awareness of when to drop through coaching in the game. Upbeat communication, short and to the point. Use tactics board for visuals. Encouraging players to hold their position with patience and communicate to receive the ball. Encourage players to play with their HEAD UP so they can make decisions when to go forward/when to turn. Pass, dribble, cross shoot but do NOT JUST kick. Play with purpose. TEAM SELECTION FULL TIME Enforce not focusing on win but working hard and trying to play the SDFC way. If played with style and effort then wins will come but more importantly we improve as individuals and a team. Not equal playing time goal is to give each player 50% of the game. For factors which may affect this please see code of conduct. Exceptions to the rule are State Cup game and National Competitions. Line Up: Players & coach to shake with opposition, coaches and officials before returning for short debrief.
SDFC Club & Player Relationship We WILL aim to provide: Qualified coaches with experience in professional youth development Approachable staff who are open to players and parents seeking guidance Age/ability appropriate player and team development through structured and organized practices A training environment that allows players to be creative without fear of making mistakes Additional training opportunities Access to some of NJ s finest all weather training facilities and modern training equipment Regular communication and organized approach to the overall functioning of the program Physiological, psychological and nutritional guidance Entry to high level tournaments on a state, regional and national level Coach feedback and evaluations Player/team goal setting and self evaluation to develop the intelligent player Fair and appropriate playing time (at the coach s discretion) Development of the whole individual through the medium of sport The promise to challenge ourselves to constantly improve We will NOT: Allow players to play the positions they want at the expense of the team and their development Compromise the greater good of team or club to satisfy a player/parent. Sacrifice the development of the players/team for win/loss records
What we expect from an SDFC Player: SDFC soccer players will work with their coaches to develop qualities such as sportsmanship, self-esteem, and camaraderie with fellow athletes, and develop a lifelong love for the game of soccer. Commitment to the SDFC code of conduct, training program and game schedule. Any possible absences must be communicated to the coach prior to the event. Professional punctuality: Arrive 15 minutes prior to start of training, 45minutes prior to games (properly equipped upon arrival) A professional attitude at training and games: Respect, 100% effort (always try your best!), concentration, and confidence to ask questions Immaculate appearance when representing SDFC: Clean/polished cleats, correct uniform (training/game day/travel uniform), shirts tucked in, socks pulled up. A kitbag checklist will be provided- cleats, inflated ball, pump, drink etc. Dedication to the game of soccer: watch live games on TV, practice/play soccer at home and with friends in free time Professional preparation: eat the right foods at the right time, appropriate rest and recovery etc. Challenge yourself to improve! The criteria listed are in the best interests of YOU becoming the best player you can possibly be! Failure to exhibit appropriate behavior while representing SDFC will be result in disciplinary action at the coaching staff s discretion.
Playing Time Playing time is often the barometer the players and parents use to define how well their child is doing on the team. Through the 3v3 play and progression to 8v8 the aim is for all players to play for at least 50% of each game. Playing time is at the discretion of the coach, based upon the educational flow of the game. It will NOT be relevant to the score line!
Schedule for 2015/16 All events listed below are subject to change based on the needs of the teams. Summer 2015 Combined Team/Age Group Training Sessions (July/August) Optional pay to play tournaments Optional pay to play camps Fall 2015 EDP Futures 5v5 Festival play MAPS or Northern Counties League 8v8 Training 2 x per week Winter 2015/16 Training 1 x per week indoors Optional pay to play tournaments Spring 2016 EDP Futures 5v5 Festival play MAPS or Northern Counties League 8v8 Training 2 x per week *Any additional activities will incur an additional fee to cover coaching fees, tournament entry and administration. 5v5 Less players and smaller fields means players will experience more time on the ball and more decision making experiences. Therefore increasing development of technique and game intelligence. The EDP futures league also takes away the competition element where clubs are focused on player development and NOT results. 8v8 The team will play in the 8v8 league for 2 reasons. 1) More opportunity to play and 2) early exposure to the format they will play in the following years. The fact that this is a league is irrelevant. Coming top or bottom of a youth soccer league has no bearing on development and potential. We ask parents to understand this and allow players to experience the relaxed, development-focused environment we seek. We cannot promise that every team we face will share the same mindset, so please keep our own standards high for the sake of the young players on the field.
Parent/Fan Support Conduct during games Parents/fans understand that once the game begins, their role is to support the athletes and the coaches. Parents/fans are not to interfere or undermine, in any way, the play of the game. Parents are expected to follow S.A.G.E. (set a good example) sportsmanship guidelines at all times. Parents who "sideline" coach and/or act in an un-sportsmanlike manner, risk having their child "benched" by the coaching staff until the problem is corrected. Further action may be taken if necessary Parents are expected to refrain from remonstrating with the referee s. We are 100% confident that the game officials WILL make mistakes. By complaining about decisions we are only detracting attention away from the game and the player, and may even lead to the referee favoring the opposition. Positive parents have the ability to see past short term blips and focus on long term development. Ask questions on the way to the match ask what they are going to work on during the match. Don t tell them what they need to work on that is the coaches job. Be patient and persistent. Players will learn from mistakes provided they are given the correct environment. When player do not achieve success or meet their goals on the first try, it is important that you are patient and encourage them to keep working hard and try again. Parent Volunteer participation SDFC aim to keep player/parent costs at a minimum, while still aiming to provide the maximum experience for its players. With this in mind, a parent of each player is required to volunteer within their team s organization, management, and structure. There are many roles that parents volunteers have to take on in order for their child s team to be successful. Please be aware that every parent will be asked to volunteer at some point. Every parent is expected to help with the set-up and break-down of fields/goals at the beginning and end of each game if needed. Parents may, at some point, be required to coordinate and participate in fundraising activities for the benefit of the team. Fundraising Players, parents and coaches are all encouraged to support the team in their fundraising activities. In order to support the financial needs of an elite youth soccer team, throughout 2015/16 and beyond, SDFC will search to raise money through: Fundraising activities (sales, car washes etc.). Corporate sponsorship Any other ideas would be greatly received.
