3 WELCOME TO GLOBAL PREMIER SOCCER Dear GPS player, I would like to welcome you to the GPS family. The essence of the club is to provide a positive, enjoyable and challenging learning environment for all of our players that will push them to reach their full potential. PETER BRADLEY GPS DIRECTOR OF COACHING The Coach Handbook is a new addition to the GPS learning environment. We want our coaches to be students of the game and to start becoming more accountable for their own learning pathway. In order to do this, coaches will need to take on more responsibility for their own development on and off the field. This handbook will provide coaches with more information on what the expectations are from the club with regards to the style of play that we want to see permeate all of our teams, the systems of play and the roles within those systems that players need to be familiar with, and tools to be able to evaluate individual training and game performances. We hope that our coaches will find a lot of their questions answered by referring to their handbook and that it will become a valuable tool in their development journey. 7 STYLE OF PLAY CONFIDENT GPS teams are built up of confident players. This confidence is created with self belief, hard work, repetition and team camaraderie - all created in a positive coaching environment. BUILD FROM THE BACK GPS teams always look to build attacks from the back as opposed to playing kick and run soccer. POSITIVE POSSESSION GPS teams play an indirect style of soccer but have an awareness of the most appropriate penetrating pass. ATTACK-MINDED GPS teams play the game with flair and creativity. PHYSICALITY (EXPLOSIVE) GPS teams excel in the physical element of the game - exhibiting pace and power. GPS teams are hard working, hard in the tackle but always play within the laws of the game. DEFENSIVE PRESSURE GPS teams understand how and when to apply pressure in order to regain possession of the ball. PROACTIVE (SMART) GPS teams are soccer smart. Players are students of the game and are able to make adjustments based on what they see. GPS STYLE OF PLAY VIDEO

8 GPS SYSTEMS OF PLAY In the 11 v 11 game format, GPS teams will operate in the system. In the 8v8 game format, GPS teams will operate in the system. In the 6v6 game format, GPS teams will operate in the system. In the 4v4 game format, GPS teams will operate in the system. 8.

9 PLAYER ROLES - 11v11 All GPS players aged U13 and above will play the 11v11 game format with a system. Attached are the roles and responsibilities for each position with the system. Players will play in at least 1-2 roles in the system. They will specialize in one role from U15 onwards. GOALKEEPER #1 Excellent technical ability with feet. Ability to pass accurately over a range of distances (short / medium / long) using feet when the ball is on the ground. Supreme distribution over a range of distances using different throwing techniques. Has excellent handling ability (dealing with crosses, retaining shots into the body). Has excellent shot stopping ability (high / low diving saves). Dominant in 1v1 situations. TEAM IN POSSESSION Plays with speed and control when in possession of the ball. Always positioned to receive a pass from team mate as part of build up play. Pass decision hit 7, 9, 11 in order to launch a counter attack, switch the point of attack or retain possession with depth. TEAM NOT IN POSSESSION Positioning in relation to the ball, team mates and opposition. Communication with defensive line in relation to position of the ball and opposition. Command of the penalty area. Understands how to protect the goal (near post, far post, attacks from central areas). Is proactive always thinking and assessing. Has a strong will / desire to prevent conceding goals. Is disciplined and responsible. Is a consistent performer. Is a leader. Conducts and organizes the team with effective communication. Reactions. Power jumping / diving / ability to stop the ball. CENTER DEFENDER #4 & 5 Excellent technical ability with feet. Ability to pass accurately over a range of distances (short / medium / long) using feet. Excellent aerial ability. TEAM IN POSSESSION Plays with speed and control when in possession of the ball. Always positioned to receive a pass from team mate as part of build up play. Pass decision: penetrate, change the point of the attack, retain possession with depth. 11 PLAYER ROLES - 11v11 WIDE FORWARD #7 & 11 Supreme ability to dribble / run with the ball at speed. Excellent first touch control. Crossing ability. Aerial cross for far post runners - use the instep to curve away from the goalkeeper placed between goalkeeper and defenders. Driven cross low, flat trajectory aiming for near post or central runners. Central cross aimed at the penalty spot for runners coming across the goal keeper. Pass quality ability to penetrate a defence with a pass. Finishing ability balls in the air or on the ground. TEAM IN POSSESSION Always in a position to receive the ball and go forward with first touch. Cross decision using M.O.D.E. (Moment, Observation, Decision, Execution). Timing of runs to meet crosses (far post run). Exploiting movement of supporting full back (3 or 4). TEAM NOT IN POSSESSION Recovery / positional interchange in transition. Effective communication with team mates. Understands offside coordination of the back line. Ability to apply pressure and prevent an opposition counter. Intelligence to close spaces as a team. Passive and active phases (always thinking and assessing). Disciplined and responsible (hard working in attack and defence). Ability to play with back to goal. Pass quality over short distances (combination play). Ability to finish with a range of techniques (sidefoot, laces, disguise). TEAM IN POSSESSION Movement ability to get in between defenders. Movement ability to drag opponents out of position to create space for others. 12 PLAYER EXPECTATIONS TRAINING EXPECTATIONS Ensure that ALL facilities are treated with respect. Always wear the appropriate training gear. The wearing of jewellery when playing in practice sessions is strictly forbidden. Be punctual at all times. (Aim to be ready 15 minutes before any session). Always help with equipment during practice. You should not need to be asked. Report all injuries immediately to your Head Coach. MATCH CONDUCT Ensure that ALL facilities are treated with respect. Be sure that you game information (location, meeting time, kick-off time). Be proud of your appearance on the field. Make sure your cleats are polished before each game. The wearing of jewellery when playing in games is strictly forbidden. Always show good sportsmanship. Accept any decision given by the referee. Never retaliate, verbally or physically, no matter what the provocation may be. Always get a good night s sleep prior to any games. Always apply correct dress code when traveling. Report all injuries immediately to your Head Coach. GENERAL CODE OF CONDUCT Always conduct yourself with respect. Always respect other people and property you are an ambassador for the club at all times. Maximum effort is a minimum requirement always take pride in your performance at both games and in training. Always wear shin guards for all training and matches. Always warm-up and warm-down before and after training and matches. Learn the rules of the game. Give yourself every chance to succeed prepare correctly for training and matches by maintaining a balanced healthy lifestyle. Be appreciative of your parent s support. Have a good attitude, both on and off the field

13 COACH AS AN INSTRUCTOR - PLAYER EVALUATION Evaluation and assessment is an important part of every player s long-term development. Every GPS player will receive continual feedback throughout the soccer year. However, GPS players will also undergo 3 formal assessments during the year - this will highlight areas where a player is succeeding but also areas of their game that they need to address in order to improve. The GPS Player Evaluation schedule will be as follows: - U9, U10 - & U11 End of Fall season verbal evaluation. Player and parents are to be in attendance at the evaluation meeting. End of Spring season written evaluation. Player and parents are to be in attendance at the evaluation meeting. U12, U13 & U14 End of Fall season verbal evaluation. Player and parents are to be in attendance at the evaluation meeting. End of winter verbal evaluation given to player. End of Spring season written evaluation. Player and parents are to be in attendance at the evaluation meeting. U15, U16 End of winter verbal evaluation. End of Spring season written evaluation. Parent attendance is optional at U16. U17 & U18 End of winter verbal evaluation with player. End of Spring season written & verbal evaluation with player

17 SELF-EVALUATION: GOAL SETTING It is vital that you continually set yourself goals to achieve - there will always be an area of your game that can be improved. The goal setting tool will help you to set a structured personal development plan. 18 PLAYER PERFORMANCE WARM UP UP PROTOCOL Warm up is an intergal part of gameday or practice preparation. It is a period of time for players to bring their bodies and minds to the required state in order to enable peak performance. All GPS warm ups will be structured as follows: - PHASE 1. Increasing heart rate Jogging Sprints Lateral shuffling Backwards movements PHASE 2. Dynamic stretching Leg muscles Upper body and core PHASE 3. Ball Work/Tactical & Technical Work (6v6/8v8/11v11) Unopposed Opposed Team units PHASE 4. High intensity exercise prior to kick off Warm up will be led by team captains however, it is imperative that all players within the team know the team warm up routine and the benefits of every exercise that is performed

19 PLAYER PERFORMANCE INJURY REPORTING Below the recommended protocol for dealing with injuries for all MCU / SM Phoenix Players. Often with certain injuries, time is a major factor in determining when the athlete can return to sport. Our collective goal is to create a safe conduit from time of injury to medical evaluation through completion of rehab process and return to field. In 2014, we will again be working with OA Centers for Orthopedics (OA) - OA has been the official Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy Provider for Maine Premier Soccer since OA Physicians are fellowship trained, board certified, and a nationally recognized orthopedic practice. - OA facilities are conveniently based in Portland, Saco, Windham and Brunswick - OA incorporates physical assessment & management of the injured athlete for a safe & efficient return to soccer. - OA has extensive experience with all levels of athletes from pediatrics through professionals. - OA Boasts Northern New England s first and only fully integrated orthopedics, sports medicine, physical rehabilitation and athletic training facilities. Apart from the high quality of care and service provided by these groups, MPS players will have priority access to appointments that would otherwise take significantly longer. Steps to Benefit from the MPS / OA Partnership when Injured: - OA offers same day orthopedic care through their First Care program. - Call and Identify yourself as a member of MPS and that you would like to see one of the sports medicine physicians - Advise OA where you live as they have locations in Saco, Portland, Windham and Brunswick. - OA will then send you to the appropriate appointment specialist who will set up an appointment for the athlete. Identify yourself as a member of Maine Premier Soccer, the Staff at the facility will then assess whether the injury needs to be first seen by a Doctor or can receive therapy immediately. Care will then be recommended based on your location as OA has a number of orthopedic sites. Finally please your coach along with Craig Fannan (cfannan@globalpremiersoccer.com) the details of your injured player, so that we record the number of players benefiting from this partnership. For those with insurance, please contact your individual company with any questions regarding varying physical therapy benefits** 19.
