1 NORTHEAST FLORIDA DRESSAGE ASSOCIATION April 2010 USDF Region 3 NFDA is a Group Member Organization and our members are automatically USDF Group Members From the President April 2010 Extended Remarks I spent a morning recently as the dressage judge at the Walking Horse Owners Association (WHOA) show at the Jacksonville Equestrian Center. Dressage is still fairly new among the gaited breeds; the tests are modified so that the horses flat walk or running walk in lieu of trot. Several years ago I showed my Tennessee Walker, Man of Miracles, on the Florida circuit and, when the walking horse club was looking for someone to judge, my name came up. The club didn t mind that I had never judged before; they mainly wanted someone who knew the gaits. We had eight rides, mostly Intro and Training Level with one First Level rider who had trailered in from Tennessee. I have a whole new appreciation for judges now, as I had to remember to keep an eye out for appropriate attire, bits and whips; remember to hold my score until the movement was completed; remember to give a score; keep my place in the test; make comments; etc. I would have never survived without the assistance of my scribe, NFDA member and USEF-licensed judge, Kathy Daly. She coached me though each test and somehow kept the comments and scores straight. I had a blast and hope that my comments were helpful to the riders. Although there was bit of confusion about procedure at times, the riders were excited to try something new and different from the usual rail classes. At our last show, NFDA offered gaited dressage tests and I hope that we do so again. We all share a common bond with our equine friends whether your horse trots or not. 2 NEWS AND CLUB UPDATES MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Name: Kathy Daly Personal: Married to Doug Kirtley and lives in Crawfordville, FL near Tallahassee. They hope to move to Jacksonville within the year. USEF "r" rated dressage judge. Years in NFDA: A founding member, along with Jean Brinkman, Betty Stitch and others. Hometown: born in Brooklyn, NY; later lived in Monticello, NY before moving to Florida. Early horse memory: When I was 9-1/2, I got my first horse: a three-year old standardbred named Irish Lass. She was a trotter and didn t know how to canter so I had to teach her. We went on to win at Junior Jumper competitions. When I moved to Florida in my late teens, I brought Lassie with me and she became a lesson horse. I had her until she died at age 28. Current mount: I have two horses that are half brother and sister: Cordeleon (Leon) and Hurrikhanna (Anna). I typically ride and show other people s horses so it s nice to have my own that are coming along. Dressage influence: Dorita Konyot Humphries. She was thought of as a circus rider but her style was very classical and she was a master at horsemanship. I worked and trained at her farm for three years in my early 20s and continued to lesson with her for 20 years until she passed away. Other non-equestrian pursuits: relaxing on my husband s boat, the Blue Gill, kayaking and swimming. 3 The Violet M. Hopkins Fund A Grand Legacy from a Grand Lady Show/Clinic The Violet M. Hopkins Fund was established at The Dressage Foundation in 1996 to help support educational programs of USDF GMOs. The objective of the Hopkins Fund is to give financial assistance to USDF GMOs to help provide quality and effective instructional Dressage programs to riders at all levels. In 2009, the Violet M. Hopkins grants helped provide educational opportunities for... 9 USDF Regions 13 States 18 GMOs 255 Riders 789 Auditors/Attendees Over $24,000 was awarded in 2009 Funding is available for your 2010 educational clinics & seminars! 4 The Continuing Education for Dressage Instructors offers ten annual grants of $1,000 to USDF GMOs (or chapters) to conduct continuing education programs for Dressage Instructors. Grants will be awarded to the first ten GMOs who apply and whose applications are approved by The Dressage Foundation s Instructor Education Advisory Committee. This grant program is being made possible with funding donated by Maryal Barnett (MI) at left, The future of dressage and the welfare of our horses is dependent on the quality of education that our professionals obtain. Violet Hopkins gave her farm, time and wisdom each Summer to make the Vi Hopkins Seminar for Dressage Instructors possible for those of us hungering for more knowledge. We encourage everyone to participate as a competitor, volunteer and/or spectator. Our Series Champions will be awarded a Great Prize and Champion Ribbons. Additional information regarding Series, Championship and Year End Rules are located on the NFDA website NFLADressage.org under the Membership Section. Some information is listed below. Please note that NFDA Schooling Shows will follow the USA Equestrian Dressage Competition Rules. Certain rules have been exempted - for specific exemptions, please contact the show secretary. Each competitor is responsible for knowing the rules and a complete rulebook is available on line at: Good Luck and thank you for supporting our shows. NFDA SCHOOLING SHOW SERIES ENTRY INFORMATION Dressage classes are $15.00 members/$20.00 nonmembers. Dressage-Seat Equitation is $ NO REFUNDS AFTER CLOSING DATE FOR ANY REASON! ALL ENTRIES MUST BE POSTMARKED BY THE CLOSING DATE. Any entry postmarked after the closing date will be held to see if room permits to add the rides and charged a $25.00 late fee if rides are added. If membership for NFDA accompanies the entry, then entries will be at membership price. Please send a separate check for membership dues. DO NOT include dues with entry fees. Thank you! Stabling Fee - $ Stalls will be available after 12 noon on Friday and include two bags of shavings. (Additional Shavings are available for purchase for $8.00 per bag from the JEC office until 9 pm ) Grounds Fee - $5.00 per horse (no grounds fee if you are buying a stall) Office Fee - $10.00 Mandatory Non-Competing Horse Fee - $15.00 Championship Qualifying Fee - $5.00 per qualifying class. Show grounds open at 12:00 pm on Friday afternoon. The gates will be locked prior to this time. Prize and six ribbons in each class. Champion and Reserve High Point ribbons for Amateur, Open and Junior. Junior and Open riders will be scored and placed separately if there are two or more in a class. Intro tests may be in a small arena. ASTM approved helmets are MANDATORY for Jr. riders and strongly recommended for adults. All dogs MUST be leashed while on show grounds. Concession stand will be on the grounds. No ride times will be assigned unless proof of negative coggins, appropriate show fees, & release have been received by show manager/secretary. Ride times will be available on line at: SERIES RULES: You must be an NFDA member and participate in 2 of the 3 shows. 3 Scores from the same division are needed in order to be eligible. One of these scores MUST be from the Test 4 of your division. Equitation and Freestyle classes only need 2 scores for the series. Please see NFLADressage.org for complete details. CHAMPIONSHIP QUALIFYING RULES: To Qualify you must be an NFDA member and the Rider and Horse combination must have 2 scores 60 or above in the highest test of a given level, ie Intro B, Training 4, First 4, etc. and paid the $5.00 qualifying fee prior to riding the test.
