2 Bucknell Football Notes 2 HEAD COACH TIM LANDIS Tim Landis is in his seventh year as the Bob Odell Head Coach of Bucknell Football in 2009, and he is in sole possession of fifth place on the program s career games coached list at 73. Landis teams achieved.500 or better records in three of his first six seasons at Bucknell, including a 7-4 campaign in Having already resurrected programs at Davidson and St. Mary s, Landis arrived at Bucknell in December 2002 to take over a football program that was undergoing a trying period. As Landis first spring practice approached, the Bison were still coping with the death of legendary head coach Tom Gadd, and they were still tasting the bitterness of a 2-9 record that ended a school-record run of seven straight winning seasons. But under Landis leadership, pride was quickly restored in the program, and the Bison turned in two very good seasons, first going 6-6 in 2003 then improving to 7-4 in Bucknell placed third in the competitive Patriot League standings both seasons. Landis has coached both an All-American (DL Sean Conover) and a pair of Academic All-Americans (OL Justin Gibson, DB David Frisbey) during his tenure at Bucknell. Upon his hiring, Landis, 45, brought to the Bison football program an impressive cache of head coaching experience. He became Bucknell s 25 th head football coach since the program s inception in Following a seven-year tenure as head coach at Davidson, Landis spent the three seasons prior to coming to Bucknell building a solid program at St. Mary s (Calif.). In both positions, he garnered national accolades for turning modestly successful programs into winners. Head Coach: Tim Landis (Randolph-Macon 86) Overall Record: (17th season) Record at Davidson: (7 seasons) Record at St. Mary s: (3 seasons) Record at Bucknell: (7th season) Offensive Assistants: Brent Thompson (OL), Matt Lintal (WR/SB), Sam Perryman (RB), R.D. If Holy Cross defeats Colgate on Saturday, the winner of the Bucknell-Lehigh matchup will move into a first-place tie in the league standings. Both teams have played low-scoring contests lately, with the Bison tallying two single-digit offensive outputs and not scoring more than 20 points in their last four contests. Bucknell has not scored a point in the first half since the Marist game, a span of nearly 75 minutes. The Bison defense is holding opponents to just over 14 points per game over the last three contests. Similarly, Lehigh, which is ranked 14th nationally in total defense, has yielded just seven points the last two weeks, shutting out Georgetown two weeks ago and losing 7-0 to Yale last Saturday. The Mountain Hawks rank second nationally in pass defense and tackles for loss, and fifth in sacks. Bucknell, which ranks 48th nationally in total defense, has not defeated Lehigh since 1997, a span of 11 games. The Bison will be looking for their first win on Homecoming since The last time Bucknell and Lehigh met on Homecoming was in 1995, and the Mountain Hawks prevailed BUCKNELL VS. LEHIGH SERIES NOTES Lehigh leads Lehigh has won 11 in a row, the longest win streak in series history. Lehigh s average margin of victory during the 11-game winning streak is ( ). Lehigh has scored at least 30 points in eight of the last 11 meetings. The Mountain Hawks have tallied at least 40 points five times during that span. Bucknell has scored at least 20 points once against Lehigh in the last 11 meetings. Bucknell and Lehigh have met every year since Bucknell s last win vs. Lehigh by more than one touchdown (7 points) was 1966 (45-0). LAST TIME VS. LEHIGH Lehigh 31, Bucknell 15 (Nov. 15, Bethlehem, Pa.) Shaun Pasternak broke the Bucknell single-season record with his 11th touchdown reception. He hauled in nine passes for 97 yards, just missing his fifth 100-yard game of the year. C.J. Hopson s 32 pass attempts were the most for a Bison quarterback since Bucknell limited Lehigh to 204 yards, the fewest by an opponent since Marlon Woods recorded Bucknell s first blocked punt since 2005, which also occurred against Lehigh. INSIDE THE PENN BOX SCORE Bucknell failed to score a touchdown for the first time since Sept. 9, 2006 against Lafayette. Ahkiel White picked off his second pass of the season, and the sixth of his career, giving him more than any Bucknell player since Dante Ross accumulated seven interceptions from 2002 to Greg Jones tallied his third double-figure tackle game of the season and led the team in stops for the second time.

From the fourth quarter vs. Marist to the fourth quarter vs. Penn, Bucknell yielded only one touchdown in a span of 113:13. Bucknell committed four turnovers. The two teams combined for seven miscues. Seven different Bison receivers caught a pass, equaling a season high. Bucknell posted a season-low five tackles for loss. The Bison last posted a longer home winning streak in 2000, when they claimed five in a row. Home Winning Streaks (since 1950) WEEK AFTER A BYE Seventh-year Bucknell head coach Tim Landis has proved to be successful at preparing for an opponent coming off a bye week. The Bison are 4-2 under Landis in games immediately following a bye, including 4-1 in the last five years. This is the fifth time in the last six years Bucknell has played a home game after enjoying a week off. HOMECOMING GAMES Saturday marks Homecoming at Bucknell. The Bison are all-time on Homecoming and they have posted a 9-4 record over the last 13 years despite not posting a Homecoming victory since IN PATRIOT LEAGUE? With a win Saturday, Bucknell will improve to 2-0 in Patriot League play. The Bison have not won their first two Patriot League contests since 2003 and have accomplished the feat just four times (1996, 1997, 2001, 2003) since the beginning of the league in PILING UP INTERCEPTIONS Junior DB Ahkiel White intercepted a pass for the second consecutive game against Penn. He now has six interceptions in his career, the most by a Bison player since Dante Ross recorded seven picks from White is the first Bucknell player to have interceptions in back-to-back games since Stephen Collage intercepted passes in consecutive contests against Marist and Penn in TEAM INTERCEPTIONS Rob Gerlach, Bryce Robertson and Ahkiel White each had interceptions against Penn, marking the first road interceptions for the Bison since last November s contest at Lehigh. Bucknell now has 12 interceptions this year, exceeding its total from all of last year and placing it fourth nationally. The last time opponents scored less than the 20.5 points they are averaging this year was 2004 when they averaged 20.1 points. The Bison defense already has more sacks (15) and interceptions (12) than last year, and is only two tackles for loss (40) behind last year s final total of 42. Bucknell Defense Best Under Landis Points per Game: (2004) Sacks: (2004) Interceptions: (2003, 2005) Tackles for Loss: (2004) Total Yards Per Game (allowed) (2004) FIRST-HALF STRUGGLES Bucknell has been shut out in the first half of each of its last two games. The Bison have not scored a first-half point in 74:27. Bucknell has been outscored in the first half this year. NO TOUCHDOWNS Bucknell failed to score a touchdown two weeks ago at Penn. It marked the first time since 2006 the Bison did not register a touchdown. They bounced back from that loss to defeat Cornell 20-5 behind a pair of touchdowns and two field goals. FOUR STRAIGHT UNDER 20 POINTS Bucknell has not exceeded 20 points since its victory over Robert Morris in week two. It is the first time the Bison have failed to score 20 points in four consecutive games since 2006, and just the second time in the last 15 years. RETURN OF PASTERNAK Junior WR Shaun Pasternak played in his second game this season against Penn. The record-setting Pasternak hauled in his first pass of the year (12 yards) and is now 32 yards shy of breaking into the top 10 on Bucknell s career receiving yards list. STARTING QUARTERBACKS Sophomore QB C.J. Hopson and senior QB Marcello Trigg have alternated starts this year. The Bison are 2-1 with Hopson in the starting lineup and 1-2 with Trigg under center. Hopson has guided Bucknell to a 3-2 record in his career when part of the starting unit. PASSING STRUGGLES Last year Bucknell ranked 12th nationally in passing efficiency (148.52). This year that figure has dropped to and the Bison rank 110th out of 118 teams. Bucknell s quarterbacks combined for 20 touchdowns against just seven interceptions in This year, those numbers are reversed and the Bison have thrown for four touchdowns and six interceptions. PASSING ATTEMPTS Last year against Lehigh, C.J. Hopson attempted a then-career high 32 passes in his first career start. He surpassed that figure two weeks ago against Penn when he completed 13 of 34 passes. The 34 attempts were the most for a Bison signal caller since Cole Ciesnolevicz attempted 36 passes in a 2002 contest at Georgetown. NO PASSING TDS Bucknell has not thrown for a touchdown since the Cornell game in mid-september. The Bison have gone three contests without a passing touchdown. Over that same span opponents have registered just one passing touchdown. LOW YARDS FOR OPPONENT Bucknell has held Georgetown and Penn to fewer than 300 yards each of its last two games. It marked the fourth time since the beginning of the 2007 campaign, and the 13th time in the last seven years, a Bison opponent registered less than 300 yards of total offense. Fewest Opponent Yards (since 2003) (Georgetown ) (Lehigh ) (Georgetown ) (Penn ) (Penn ) CONSISTENT STARTERS Bucknell head coach Tim Landis has been fortunate to roll a similar starting lineup out on the field for most games this year. In fact, 17 of the 22 starting positions have been the same for each of the season s first six games. Three of the five positions that have changed have had only two different starters. RED ZONE SUCCESS Bucknell and its last two opponents have combined to score on all seven attempts inside the Red Zone. The Bison are 3-for-3 over that two-game span, while their opponents are 4-for-4.

5 Bucknell Football Notes 5 GAME CAPTAINS Once again in 2009, instead of naming captains prior to the season, the Bison will select captains on a game-bygame basis. The Bison have already faced Penn (No. 2 defense) and Marist (No. 16 defense). Lehigh is ranked 14th nationally in total defense. NARROW MARGINS OF VICTORIES Bucknell has won eight games over the last two seasons and most have been close. The last eight Bison wins have come by a combined 31 points, an average of less than four points per game. The eight-point margin of victory over Georgetown earlier this month marked Bucknell s largest win since a 14-point triumph in the 2007 season finale at Fordham. RECENT SUCCESS IN CLOSE GAMES Bucknell has had success in close games in recent years. In fact, the Bison have posted a 9-4 record in games decided by seven points or less since Games Decided by Seven Points or Less : 15 (5-10 record) : 13 (9-4 record) OFFENSIVE LINE CONSISTENCY Bucknell has had the same five players start on the offensive line in each of the season s first six games. Four members (Anthony Carter, Ian Dal Bello, Nick McLeod, James Phelan) of the current Bison line have been part of the starting unit every game (17) since the beginning of last year. The five members of the Bucknell offensive line have started a combined 80 times in their careers. YELLOW FLAGS Bucknell was the least-penalized team in the nation in 2007 and 2008 and that seems to be continuing this year. The Bison rank second nationally in fewest penalties per game (3.83) and fifth nationally in fewest penalty yards per game (37.5). Bucknell has committed fewer penalties than its opponents in each of its last 11 outings. Over that span the Bison have been penalized 33 times for 310 yards, while their opponents have piled up 600 penalty yards on 69 penalties. Fewest Penalties per game Fewest Penalty Yards per game 1. Villanova Villanova Bucknell Penn Penn Davidson South Dakota State Liberty Davidson Bucknell BIG PLAYS HURT BISON Bucknell s defense has been prone to give up the big play this year, but has been solid otherwise. Opponents have scored 14 touchdowns this season, and eight of those have come on plays of at least 30 yards. FEW BIG PLAYS FOR BISON While opponents have registered eight touchdowns of at least 30 yards, and 13 total plays that have gone for at least 30 yards, Bucknell s offense has posted just two plays of at least 30 yards this season, and both came in the season opener at Duquesne. Marlon Woods caught a 41-yard touchdown pass from Marcello Trigg and C.J. Hopson recorded a career-best 52-yard rush against the Dukes, marking the only times the Bison have gone longer than 30 yards on a play. Plays of at Least 30 Yards Bucknell - 2 Opponents - 13 KIZEKAI AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS Bucknell senior RB A.J. Kizekai ranks among the active NCAA FCS leaders in a number of career categories. Kizekai s Rank Among Active FCS Players Yards Per Play: 1st (11.22) Kickoff Return Yards: 2nd (2,547) Yards Per Game: 7th (147.1) All-Purpose Yards: 5th (5,150) Kickoff Returns: 5th (100) Kickoff Return Yards Per Game: 7th (72.8) MOVING UP PATRIOT LEAGUE LISTS A.J. Kizekai has 784 all-purpose yards through six games this season. He ranks 31st in the nation in all-purpose yards per game and recently moved into second place on Bucknell s career list with 5,150. That figure places him eighth in Patriot League history and ranks him fifth among active FCS players. PASSING DEFICIT Bucknell has been outgained by its opponents 1,952-1,407 this year. Much of that difference is in the passing categories as the Bison have passed for 710 yards compared to 1,302 for their opponents.

The Bison are 9-6 all-time on Oct. 24. PUNTS FOR BELL Sophomore P Andrew Bell has punted at least four times in each game this year. He has 38 punts overall and is on pace to challenge for the most punts in a season for a Bison. John Toman registered a record 72 punts in 1991 and if Bell continues to average his 6.3 punts per game he will finish the year with 69. Bell, who did not see game action as a freshman, is averaging 37.6 yards per punt, a figure that would rank fourth on Bucknell s career list. PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS Bucknell had three different players earn preseason All-America accolades during the offseason. WR Shaun Pasternak earned third-team honors from The Sports Network and honorable mention plaudits from College Sporting News. The junior was joined on the College Sporting News honorable mention list by RB A.J. Kizekai, while DB Ahkiel White was an honorable mention selection by Consensus Draft Services. ALL-PATRIOT LEAGUE Three Bison earned All-Patriot League honors last year and two of them return. A.J. Kizekai was a First Team All-Patriot League selection as a return specialist, marking the second consecutive year he was recognized. He was also a second-team selection as a running back. Shaun Pasternak joined Kizekai and since-graduated Phil Azarik on the second team All-Patriot League Selections First Team A.J. Kizekai - return specialist Second Team Phil Azarik - punter/a.j. Kizekai - running back/shaun Pasternak - wide receiver UP NEXT Bucknell will begin a three-game road trip next Saturday at Lafayette. The Bison have lost five in a row away from Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and have not played three in a row on the road since Bucknell has lost seven in a row to the Leopards, including three in a row in Easton, Pa.
