3 MISSION STATEMENT AND PHILOSOPHY The PVHS Marching Band program challenges students in the areas of musicianship and personal growth. Student musicianship is encouraged and challenged through continued development of technical skills and aesthetic values that will lead to a lifetime of music performance and appreciation. Personal growth is encouraged and fostered through the development of the personal and interpersonal skills necessary to a unified, successful team. Attention is given to citizenship, morale, spirit and loyalty. WHO WE ARE The Marching Band came into existence in 2007 with the enthusiastic backing of Principal Chris Bowles and the generous financial support of the PVHS Booster Club. In that inaugural year the Marching Band totaled 20 members. In more recent years, annual membership has been members. Marching Band consists of the wind section (flutes, clarinets, saxes, high brass {trumpets, horns}, low brass {trombones, sousaphones, baritones}), drum line {battery, pit} and color guard. Drum line is comprised of two main bodies: Battery and Pit. Battery encompasses the marching drum line (snares, bass drums, tenors, and cymbals). Pit includes the mallet instruments as well as the auxiliary instruments (marimbas, xylophones, timpani, tambourine, etc.) Unlike the marching battery, the pit is mostly stationary, usually positioned at the front of the ensemble or performance venue. Students in Color Guard perform to music using dance, flags and rifles. The choreography of the dance, flags, and rifles adds pageantry to the field show. Color Guard members also attend away football games and competitions as one unit. In the fall, the entire Red Tide Regiment performs half-time shows at home football games and supports our team by performing cheers and stands tunes at both home and away games. We support the school by performing at pep rallies, Back to School Night and 8 th Grade Open House (February). Starting in the Fall of 2011, the Red Tide Regiment began competing at field show competitions around southern California on Saturdays in October and November. In early December, we participate in the annual Peninsula Holiday Parade. In the spring, the wind section becomes the PVHS Wind Ensemble and participates in Wind Ensemble competitions (March-April) and performs at the PVHS Music Department Spring Concert in May. The Drum Line participates in the SCPA competition circuit. The Color Guard participates in WGASC Winter Guard competitions. Membership is by audition with the directors in March of each year and is open to all qualified students enrolled in the school. Membership requires total dedication and maximum effort in all aspects of marching, playing, and performance. Participants receive either PE ( PE Band on your class schedule) or Fine Arts ( Concert Band on your class schedule) credit. Students and parents must bear in mind that although students receive PE credit, Marching Band is not simply a PE class. It is much more than that as outlined above. Please feel free to contact your counselor for credit allocation advice.

5 COMMITMENT & RESPONSIBILITIES Total Commitment to Attendance As a member of PVHS Marching Band, you are making a commitment to participate in all rehearsals and performances. A season schedule will be published at the beginning of each season. You are expected to plan your personal schedule around these rehearsal and performance schedules. All members are committed to attending Summer Band Camp in August. Drum Majors are committed to attending Drum Major Camp. Drum Major Camp is highly recommended for section leaders. Excuses for any absences must be submitted to the director in writing, , and/or by phone call from a parent. All absences must be cleared at least one week prior to the performance. The director will determine whether the absence is excused or unexcused. Absences reported after a scheduled rehearsal or performance will be considered unexcused. You must remember that performing groups are teams, and the absence of even one member has a detrimental effect on the whole group. Punctuality You are responsible for being on time and to submit necessary documents and forms by deadlines. Remember that to be early is to be on time. Any time later than early is late, and late is totally unacceptable. If you are not in your proper place with your band equipment and music fully assembled, YOU ARE LATE. Commitment to Improvement You owe yourself the benefit of proper equipment and proper lessons. Avail yourself of private lessons if possible or ask for help from your bandmates and/or Ms. Parkinson. You have the responsibility for learning and contributing your talent to the group. Practice with focus! Respect For Others You have the obligation and responsibility to respect the rights of others. Listen to and heed your leadership. Excessive talking, disruptive playing of instruments, and using cell phones during class are insults to your directors and bandmates. Both in and out of uniform treat others as you wish to be treated. Respect for Venues Keep all venues clean and tidy. Clean up after yourself and be willing to help others do the same. Put all equipment, chairs and stands back in their proper places. Pick up all trash (especially at home facilities), whether or not it belongs to you

12 PARENTS By allowing your child to join the PVHS Red Tide Regiment, you have made a commitment to supporting music education at its finest! The hard work, self discipline and many diverse experiences encountered will provide a lifetime of great memories for both your child and you. Over this coming year you will most likely have many questions about the Marching Band. While this handbook will hopefully answer many of your questions, we know there will be some we missed. We encourage you to contact the directors or parent coordinators when any questions arise. We appreciate as much parental support as possible. Support at Events As parents, we encourage our students to do their best both academically as well as in their extra-curricular activities. Therefore, as parents, it is important to be aware that attendance for band members at rehearsals and performances is critical. Help the students by supporting them in the commitment to excellence. Work with them when they are getting ready for competitions. Snack and Water Donations During the Marching Band Season, all families will be asked to donate water and/or snacks for home and away games. A schedule, which will designate which date(s) each family will be asked to donate water or snacks will be sent out via by the Fall Season Parent Volunteer Coordinator. Volunteer Opportunities A band of our size can only operate with the help of dedicated parents and other volunteers. Each parent volunteer is a part of the whole picture and each brings his/her individual talents, which helps to make the whole picture a success. We will need several parent volunteers: At home games Home games start at 2:30 or 3:00. We will need at least two parent volunteers for each home game. Marching Band has its own section in the football stands. A parent arrives early to cordon off this section. A parent arrives early to cover the bleacher stands in this section. At away games Parents ride the bus and chaperone as needed at the games. Help with snacks and waters At competitions Parents ride the bus and chaperone as needed. Help move equipment on and off the field. Help with snacks and waters
