1 MEDIA INFORMATION Wilmington Blue Rocks (57-70, 19-38) Carolina League Affiliate of the Kansas City Royals vs. Carolina Mudcats (66-61, 32-26) Carolina League Affiliate of the Atlanta Braves Game No. 128 Road Game No. 66 Five County Stadium Wednesday, August 26, :00 p.m. BLUE ROCKS BREAKDOWN HOME: AWAY: STREAK: L4 LAST 5: 1-4 LAST 10: 4-6 ROAD WOES CONTINUE: The Wilmington Blue Rocks chipped away but could not overcome an early 6-0 deficit as they fell 7-4 to the Carolina Mudcats on Tuesday night at Five County Stadium. Dustin Peterson turned in a three-rbi game for Carolina, while the offensive standout for Wilmington was Alfredo Escalera, who mashed his second homer of the season at Advanced-A. SOUTHERN DISCOMFORT: With a loss on Tuesday, the Blue Rocks struggles against CL South opponents continued. This is not welcomed news for the Rocks as they will finish out their season with 14 games against Southern teams before heading to the playoffs. Wilmington has a sub-.500 record against all four teams in the CL South, with their worst record being 3-9 against the Salem Red Sox. Overall, Wilmington is when facing CL South opponents, compared to their record when facing divisional rivals in the North. The Blue Crew is 2-11 in the month of August versus Southern teams alone. The Rocks close out their 2015 regular season with one more game against Carolina before heading off for a four-game set at Myrtle Beach. The schedule does not get any more forgiving as Wilmington ends the season at home with three games against the first-place Winston-Salem Dash and then four more against the first-half champion Pelicans. SOURCE OF OFFENSE: It has not been an easy stretch for the Wilmington Blue Rocks offense, but one bright spot has been the revival of Cam Gallagher. The Rocks catcher had a very slow start to the month of August, going just 2-for-20 in his first six games this month. Gallagher is coming around, though, as he has now recorded 10 hits in his last eight games. He also has four doubles and four RBIs in that stretch. Gallagher is now batting.238 this season with 14 doubles, five homers, and 23 RBIs. While he has not been as consistent as Gallagher, Wilmington was also helped by a nice day from Escalera who has really struggled so far at Advanced-A. The native of Puerto Rico put up great numbers with Low-A Lexington at the beginning of the season, batting.313 with 24 extra-base hits and 33 RBIs in 64 games. Coming into Tuesday, though, the outfielder was batting just.199 in 47 games with the Blue Crew. He also had just seven extra-base hits in those contests. SLOW STARTERS: For the fourth time in their last five games, a Rocks opponent took a lead in the first. On Monday night, Carolina was not able to score until a Jose Briceno homer in the third inning, breaking a streak of three straight games with scores in the first inning. The Salem Red Sox took leads in the top of the first inning in every contest of their most recent three-game series at Frawley Stadium. Those four first inning leads have accounted for seven total runs. This is not a statistic that bodes well for Wilmington, who is now a horrid in games where the opponent scores first. The other team has now scored first in each of the last five games the Blue Crew has played. TRIPLE THE PLEASURE: On August 4 Wilmington turned its third triple play of the season. Myrtle Beach s Victor Caratini popped out to Humberto Arteaga with runners on first and second, and with both runners being unaware that the ball was caught, the Rocks were able to collect two force outs to get the tri-killing. The first time the Blue Crew turned three this year was on April 19 in a game against Frederick at Frawley Stadium. They also turned three on June 9 at Winston-Salem. The trio of triple plays are a franchise record for most in a single season. Perhaps most amazing is the fact that the team turned four triple plays in a 373-day span. Prior to that stretch, Wilmington had retired three on the same play only twice in the previous 16 seasons. THEY SAID IT OUTFIELDER ALFREDO ESCALERA: (Struggles are) all in my head. I m trying to keep my head level and keep working in the cage. Trust the process. I ve been working with (Abraham Nunez) and Terry (Bradshaw) to try and get a good approach at the plate. That s what I ve been working on, just getting a good approach and trying to get a pitch that I can drive...sometimes you stand there and you get jammed or you get ahead of a pitch and you don t know what you did, (Nunez and Bradshaw) are there to tell you what you did wrong. They tell you what to do to fix it too, so it s definitely good...i saw a pitch that I could drive (on the homerun). He threw me a hanging off-speed (pitch) and I just stayed short to the ball and let the ball carry...it s definitely hard (to stay positive). Nobody likes losing but the next day there s another game and you just try to bounce back. Especially since playoffs are getting close, we re just trying to get hot before the playoffs start so we can have a chance to win it. It s definitely important (to build momentum). Right now we re a little down, but I think when the playoffs get here everybody will have a little spark in them...this is a great group of guys. We stay together, we don t get on anybody. This is a tough game and we re going to have tough losses like we ve been having but the key is to stay together and eventually everything is going to fall into place. Today s Starters WIL: RHP Alec Mills (6-6, 3.19) vs. CAR: LHP Blair Walters (5-7, 2.91) Despite being a 22nd round draft pick by the Royals in 2012, Alec Mills has impressed so far in his minor league career. He is posting a career-era of exactly 3.00 since starting with Rookie-Level Idaho Falls at the end of Mills throws four pitches (fastball, changeup, slider, curve) and features his off-speed stuff prominently. Mills does not throw incredibly hard (low-90s), but he is able to work off his off-speed stuff. He has split time in his career as a starter and a reliever. He spent most of his first two professional seasons coming out of the pen before making the transition to the starting rotation last season with Idaho Falls and Low-A Lexington. Mills dominated Low-A as a starter last season, going 2-1 in seven starts, posting a 1.18 ERA. He gave up just 25 hits in 38 innings. Mills was named a midseason Carolina League All-Star this season and the Carolina League s Pitcher of the Month in June. He lost a 24-inning scoreless streak on July 5 at Potomac. Two starts later he left in the second inning against Frederick, which landed him on the Disbaled List for one day shy of one month. He yielded four runs on seven hits in two frames during his first start back against Potomac on August 15. Blair Walters will get the call tonight for the Carolina Mudcats. Walters hails from Oak Park, California, and played collegiately at Ventura Community College in California. After his time there, the lefty transferred to the University of Hawaii. In two seasons at Hawaii, he went 9-3 with a 5.49 ERA in 50 relief appearances. Walters was originally taken by the Chicago White Sox in the 11th round of the 2011 draft, but has switched affiliations multiple times since. On July 22, 2012, the White Sox traded him and Matt Heidenreich (now with Winston-Salem) to the Astros for pitcher Brett Myers. He spent a year-and-a-half in the Houston organization before the Astros released him on March 18, The Atlanta Braves signed Walters on July 22, 2014, and he has called the Carolina League home ever since. This season, Walters began his campaign with seven relief appearances before moving to the starting rotation full-time. His last time out came on August 21 at Winston-Salem. Briceno saw some improvements at the plate in 2014, as he began hitting the ball to all fields more and worked out some flaws in his setup at the dish. There is a bit of an uppercut to his swing, allowing him to tap into his raw power. On the defensive side of the ball, Briceno is still developing as a receiver. He features an above-average arm, and even threw out 44 percent of would-be basestealers a season ago. Despite these assets, he has work to do, but Briceno s tools give him the chance to develop into a big league regular in time. Another player realtively new to the Braves organization is Dustin Peterson. The San Diego Padres took the Phoenix, Arizona native just 38 picks after the Seattle Mariners chose his older brother D.J. in the first round of the 2013 Draft. He spent his first full professional season at Low-A Fort Wayne, and was included in the package the Braves acquired in December in exchange for Justin Upton was a bit of a struggle for Peterson, but scouts still trust his hitting ability. They believe he knows how to work counts and take advantage of pitches he can drive. Featuring above-average raw power, Peterson is a player who comes with his fair amount of swings-and-misses. He was originally a shortstop in high school and took a brief detour as a third baseman as a professional. The Braves moved him to the outfield after his acquisition and he s made a solid transition. Scouts believe that no matter where he ends up defensively, it ll be up to his bat to carry him through the minors. If the Mudcats make the postseason this year, they can rest easy knowing at least one of their regulars has big-time postseason experience. Jacob Schrader played college ball at the University of Tampa, where he helped his team win the Division II National Championship in Schrader, a native of San Antonio, Florida, was named the NCAA DII Championship Series All-Tournament Team MVP during his squad s title run. He hit an even.300 during his magical 2013 campaign, to go along with 10 home runs and 51 RBIs. A 27th round pick by the Braves in 2013, Schrader has been consistently progressing through the minor league ranks, playing at the Rookie Level during his first year of pro-ball, the Low-A level a season ago, and has now found a home at the Adv.-A level in Carlos Salazar was originally committed to pitch collegiately at Fresno State, but a $625,000 signing bonus from the Braves lured the hard-throwing righty to the professional ranks right out of high school in the 2013 draft. The California native is in his third professional season after limited time in 2013 and a season to forget in at the Low-A level a season ago, Salazar pitched to a 1-6 record and a ERA in 10 starts before getting demoted to Rookie-Level Danville. It was there that he was moved to the bullpen, and Salazar thrived in the role, notching a 2-1 record and an ERA of He spent most of 2015 back with Low-A Rome, but got the call to the Carolina League in mid-july. Salazar features a fastball that sits at mph and can touch 97. His changeup and curveball have potential to be plus-pitches, but they still need refining.

What A June: Mills was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Month in June going 3-0 in five starts with a miniscule 0.99 ERA. He allowed just 25 hits in 36.1 innings and struck out 28 on his way to the honor. The right-hander started June in style with an eight inning, one-run performance in a win over the Carolina Mudcats on the road. At the time it was Mills longest outing of the season. After allowing three runs in five innings against Frederick in his next outing, he went on a run where he did not allow opposing teams to score for 24 consecutive frames, a season-high for any Rocks pitcher. Arguably his best outing of the year came against the Keys on June 18, just one day before Wilmington would clinch a first-half CL North crown. Mills worked 8.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out seven in a game the Blue Crew would win 2-0 to bring their magic number, at the time, down to just one game. Mills On All-Star Experience: (Pitching in the Carolina/California League All-Star game) was a blast. Just to be honored to go out there and participate in that game is awesome, but to be able to pitch in it and have a little bit of success was another thing, so it was awesome. (But) it was exhausting. After the three days were over, we got back, and as soon as I hit the bed I fell asleep. But it s just one of those things where it s worth it. When you get announced on the field, I had chills. It s nice being honored. Windy City Warriors: Despite growing up in Tennessee, Mills grew up a Chicago Cubs fan because his parents are originally from Chicago. Despite their difference in style, Mills said he idolized Kerry Wood and Mark Prior growing up. While he may not throw as hard as the former young phenoms for the Cubs, Mills breaking stuff certainly rivals that of the former Chicago greats. Avoiding The Injury Bug: Just as Mills was about to complete his first full professional season in 2013 with Low-A Lexington, he came down with an arm injury that would eventually lead to arm surgery and a ton of rehab. He spent the first part of his season in the Lexington bullpen before being slotted into the rotation, but after just three starts he started feeling the arm pain that would sideline him until the start of Mills started his road to recovery back at Rookie-Level Idaho Falls, where he went 2-2 in seven appearances (six starts) before getting the call back to Low-A Lexington. Mills said his rehab was more of a mental grind than a physical one, as he had to learn how to pitch to hitters, rather than rely solely on his stuff. The latest injury setback was a finger issue on his pitching hand. It cost him just under one month. Mills On Having Four Plus-Pitches: For me, I think (I m most proud of) the ability to throw all of (my pitches) for a strike at any point in the count. I think as a pitcher, to have that in your back pocket, you re going to throw a lot of hitters off-balance and be able to work deep into games. I didn t really start throwing a slider until I got into college. The changeup kind of really clicked this year after surgery. Having the mindset that I m probably going to need to become a better pitcher after surgery, you work on off-speed and work on being able to throw them for strikes, so those two kind of blossomed out of nowhere.
