Koehl Classic hosted by Ohio State. The tournament includes three-fourths of last season s NCAA Manhattan Regional, with the Bears, Ohio State and Lipscomb being joined by Oakland University. MSU begins play Friday at 5 p.m. Central against 20th-ranked Ohio State (2-1) in the third meeting between the schools in less than a calendar year. The Bears then play two matches on Saturday, taking on Atlantic Sun Conference favorite Lipscomb (2-1) at 9 a.m. and Oakland (3-1) at 5 p.m. Missouri State is the near unanimous favorite to repeat as Missouri Valley Conference champions in 2017, and the remainder of a rigorous non-conference schedule includes a trip to Pepperdine (Sept. 8-9) before opening the home slate with the annual Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational Sept The Opponents Ohio State is 2-1 on the season and ranked 20th in the most recent AVCA poll after defeating UTRGV and Saint Louis and losing at No. 10 BYU in the season s first weekend. The Buckeyes are led by all-big Ten setter Taylor Hughes, who has been a teammate of MSU s Lily Johnson the last two summers on the US Collegiate National Team. Lipscomb is 2-1 on the year and receiving eight votes in the AVCA Top 25 poll. The Bisons defeated No. 24 Arizona and East Tennessee State and lost to Wichita State during the first weekend of the season. Lipscomb is the preseason favorite to win the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2017, and junior outside hitter Carlyle Nusbaum is the league s preseason player of the year. Oakland completed the first weekend of the season with wins over Eastern Michigan, Stony Brook and Robert Morris, and a five-set loss at Butler. The Golden Grizzlies are picked to finish third in the Horizon League in 2017, and went last season. Series Histories Missouri State owns a 4-3 series lead over Ohio State, and the series was resurrected with two meetings in 2016 after a quarter century break. Missouri State won in Springfield in five sets on Sept. 9 last season, and the Buckeyes earned a 3-0 win in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Saturday s matches will be the first between the Bears and both Lipscomb and Oakland.

She became the MVC s all-time winningest coach in league matches Sept. 30, 2011, when the Bears beat Bradley 3-1 for her 197th conference victory, and won her 400th career match against Miami (Fla.) on Sept. 13, A native of El Cajon, Calif., the MVC Coach of the Year in 2003 and both MVC and AVCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2016 has guided Missouri State to an overall record of (.703) and (.758) mark in the Missouri Valley Conference since The Bears have won MVC regular season championships in 2003 and 2016 under Stokes, making NCAA Tournament appearances in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2015 and MSU s lone postseason victory came at Arkansas in Stokes came to Missouri State from the University of Idaho, where she helped the Vandals to four straight NCAA Tournament berths. In the opener, Lily Johnson swatted 29 kills and the Bears rallied from a 2-1 deficit to win in the fifth set. Saturday, Missouri State lost in four sets to eighth-ranked Kansas in a match that included a pair of two-point set losses for the Bears. Aubrey Cheffey hit.286 with a career-high 17 kills. After a short turnaround, the Bears escaped North Carolina State with another fiveset win. MSU trailed in most statistical categories, but rallied from a 6-3 deficit in the fifth set for the two-point win as Johnson fired five of her 20 kills in the final period in Review The 2016 Bears went 26-9 overall and won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season title with a 16-2 league record. Missouri State went 9-5 during a challenging non-conference schedule that included four top- 15 opponents, with the Bears claiming wins over No. 14 Illinois and 12th-ranked Ohio State. MSU dropped its first two MVC matches in five sets before ripping off 17 wins in a row entering the MVC Tournament final. Lily Johnson led the MVC in kills and earned AVCA All-America honors for the third consecutive season as the MVC Player of the Year, Daniele Messa was the MVC Freshman of the year, and seven total Bears earned conference recognition at some point during the season, as well as Melissa Stokes taking home MVC and AVCA Region Coach of the Year honors. Quick Sets Head coach Melissa Stokes is climbing up the all-time MVC coaching lists in a number of categories. Listed below is the 22nd-year coach s ranking in those categories. Lists are compiled based on statistics at Valley schools only: Third in total victories with 466 First in MVC victories with 272 Seventh in win percentage overall (.676) and third among active MVC coaches Seventh in win percentage in MVC matches only (.717) Missouri State s active 16-match MVC regular-season win streak is the longest in school history. The streak began with a victory at UNI on Sept. 30, Missouri State has won at least 20 matches in 17 of the last 18 seasons while posting winning records both overall and in Missouri Valley Conference play for 18 consecutive years. Missouri State ranks third all-time among Division I schools with 1,224 victories. Missouri State is in five-set matches since the beginning of the 2006 season and has rallied from 0-2 deficits to win seven times since then as well. The Bears are also 16-8 in the fifth set since the beginning of MSU is since the beginning of 2006 when winning set two. Strength of Schedule Missouri State beefed up its non-conference schedule once again this season, with five matches against teams that made the 2016 NCAA Tournament, and eight against top-100 RPI teams from last year. So far, the Bears have played one team ranked in the AVCA top-25, with four more matches scheduled against teams either ranked or receiving votes in the poll. Johnson played with the Collegiate National Team in Europe in 2016 and Thailand in 2017, while Butters and Wright played in Indianapolis and Minneapolis as part of USA Volleyball s High Performance pipeline. All-Americans Several players on the MSU roster can call themselves All-Americans at either the college or high school level. Senior Lily Johnson is a three-time AVCA Honorable Mention All-America selection during her time as a Bear, and she is joined by Sam Brinkmann, Aubrey Cheffey, Ashley Dudenhoeffer, Emelie Orlando, Veronica Snelling and Cambree Villarreal as players who earned the distinction during their prep careers. Six is the Magic Number The number six has been a milestone number the last 18-plus seasons in terms of winning streaks, as the Bears have strung together at least six consecutive wins a total of 22 times since the beginning of the 1999 season. In fact, Missouri State has 74 separate streaks of at least six consecutive matches in its history, and 21 double-figure streaks, with five of those coming during Stokes s tenure. Homecoming Missouri State has been dominant at home since 2000, compiling a record of for an.806 winning percentage at Hammons Student Center. The Bears went 11-2 in 2016 and have won at least 64 percent of their home matches in 17 consecutive seasons. Local Flavor Missouri State boasts two players from Springfield on its 2017 roster (Brianne Dixon and Gerri Idos from Kickapoo High) and a total of seven players from southwest Missouri, including Lauren Boone (Branson), MacKenzie Irwin (Joplin), Laynie Dake (Mount Vernon), Ashley Ophoven (Ozark), and Aubrey Cheffey (Nixa). In all, 11 of MSU s 20 players hail from the Show-Me State.
