4 COMMODORE S CORNER By Pete Luciano SOME THOUGHTS ON SAFETY AND SAILING ON LA BUONA VITA Boat preparations have started, the sailing season is just around the corner, and our Meet the Skippers event is scheduled for April 7th at SIGN OF THE WHALE in Stamford starting at The next two months will be quite active with the 4/19 Program Meeting at the DoubleTree, 4/21 After Work Party at Aji10, 5/3 Meeting at Flotilla 72, 5/17 Program Meeting at the Double Tree, 5/19 Cast Off Party TBA, and then the season s first Sail/Drive event at Captain's Cove in Bridgeport. Each year I share with all of you the established rules of etiquette that we use on La Buona Vita and it s that time again. SAFETY: One hand for the boat and one for you. When at the helm, limit your interaction with others and pay attention. Lives are in your hands. At night stay in the cockpit and wear a life preserver. If you must go forward, someone else must be topside with you and you must tether onto the boat. Make sure you sleep, eat, and drink plenty of water when making a passage. It is not easy to do so in a storm. Drinking alcohol on board is the same as drinking and driving: alcohol hinders your ability to react. If you see something that looks to be a problem tell the skipper. Always wear some kind of footwear. Stubbing your toe can hurt, and boats have a lot of places to stub your toe. CONSIDERATION OF OTHERS: Think of others before you think of yourself, if you go below for something to eat or drink ask others if they want something. Water and power is scarce on a boat. Don't let the water run, and turn off the lights when not in use. Don't stow personal gear in the main salon and pack lightly as space is limited. Cell phones should be used very sparingly or not at all. Clean up after yourself and clean up any mess you come across, a clean ship is a happy one. Don't stand in the companionway or in a place where others need to transit. SHIP RULES: If you touch it, put it back. Don't put it down, put it back, because it has a home. If you break something, tell the skipper. Ask before you touch something you are not familiar with. But do ask and get involved! Trimming sails is fun. Ask if you are not sure how to, and always tell the helmsperson that you are trimming sails. The ship comes first unless personal safety is involved. If you need to open the ice box or refrigerator, make sure you ask the person who packed it where things are. Ask the owner before you open a hatch or port and once opened it s your responsibility to close it. A lot of sea water can come into an open hatch or port. Ask the owner if you need to charge equipment, battery power is limited. Being on a boat can be very relaxing as well as exciting and both are enhanced if all on board work together. Enjoy the season! CAPTAIN PETER A LUCIANO 4

5 Singles Under Sail, Inc PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Tony Reyes Singles Under Sail, Inc PROGRAMS DIRECTOR Mike Smith Dear SUS Members, I know you can't tell with all the snow we had, but Spring is here. Spring means meeting Skippers, lending a hand to prepare the sailboats for the season, but most importantly preparing yourself for the sailing season. Water sports are not without risk, this is the reason we need you take a safe boating course within the first two years of joining SUS. There are many options available for taking the safe boating course (in person, online, 8-hour course, or the 8 Week course), and I implore you to invest in your safety before you head to the water. I will be co-teaching an 8-hour basic boating safety course in May. This course meets the requirements for CT/NY licensing. If you are interested in attending, feel free to me at: president@singlesundersail.org. Additionally, for our new members, we ask that you attend our Member and Dockside Orientation Class (MOC/DOC). During these brief classes, you will learn about our club, some sailboat basics, and meet other new members. After the MOC, you will receive a Member's Orientation Package (MOP) which will help you become more acquainted with our club and our processes. The dates for these classes can be found on our calendar or on the website. In closing, I'm excited that the warmth of the sun is approaching, and I look forward to starting another safe and exciting sailing season. DON T MISS OUT ON OUR MEET THE SKIPPERS DAY ON APRIL 7 FROM 3-6 PM AT THE SIGN OF THE WHALE IN STAMFORD CT. MEMBERS WILL ENJOY A TACO AND SLIDER BAR AND UNLIMITED SOFT DRINKS. SIGN OF THE WHALE IS OFFERING A 3 HOUR BAR SPECIAL (BEER, WINE & SANGRIA) FOR $25, PAYABLE AT THE DOOR. $20 NON MEMBER FEE PAYABLE AT THE DOOR IN- CLUDES FOOD AND SOFT DRINKS. SUS will have six program meetings this year, a reduction from previous years in answer to the question: Why sit in a room listening to a talk when you could be out sailing? Program Meetings will be held on April 19, May 17, June 21, September 20, October 18, and November 15. In place of a Program Meeting in July and August, All Aboard Sailing Events will ensure that all members have a day or twilight sail on July 14 and August 16. Our first speaker, on April 19, will be Captain Travis Mingo, formerly of the US Coast Guard, and now skipper of the Maritime Museum's research vessel "Spirit of the Sound." Captain Mingo talk about international efforts to combat piracy and drug smuggling. His talk promises to be extremely interesting, and there will, of course, be plenty of time afterwards for Q&A. We have several exciting prospects for the remainder of the year: Nathan Froling, Marine Architect - tradeoffs and performance of various vessel designs. Brendan McGee - regarding a group that has contracted to buy the Greens Ledge lighthouse off Rowayton, and convert it into a fully green off-the-grid facility (possibly a B&B). Mark Smith, Hood Sails - development of the first rigid wing sail for C-Class catamarans leading to the rigs now being used in the America s Cup. (The next America s Cup boats will not be multihulls). Ed Cesare, YC Commodore - sponsored campaign in 40-ft two-person ocean racing mono hull, while also collecting water samples and water garbage for their sponsor s ecological mission. He will also tell of his recent participation in the Sydney- Hobart race. Greg Scully, Harbor Master - present harbor issues as well as safety tips and describe the activities of his local dive team Norm Bloom - up to date information on the oyster business in Long Island Sound.
