4 INTRODUCTION Rafa Nadal has transformed his training base into a high-performance tennis academy where he and his team are preparing young athletes using a unique program based on Rafa s own training system and values. Located in Rafa s home town of Manacor in Mallorca (Spain), the Academy combines tennis and education to ensure that players can follow their tennis career without having to forsake their academic progress. Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar has its own training system based upon the experience acquired by Rafa and his technical team throughout his many years on the ATP circuit, including the personal values that have been key to his many achievements. Led by Toni Nadal, Rafa s coach, the team at the Academy is comprised of a group of coaches and other professionals that have accompanied Rafa during his sporting career. This team, in which he has always trusted, plays an important role at the Academy. PHILOSOPHY Our philosophy is based upon getting the best out of our players by helping them to develop their abilities to the highest level. At the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, we prepare players for the future of tennis, applying innovative training systems combined with the characteristics that are synonymous with Rafa and his will to win. The program integrates working on athleticism, winning spirit, competitive mentality, intensity in training and during matches, concentration, anticipation, tactical knowledge and learning to compete. OBJECTIVES To maximize the potential of every athlete giving them the best opportunity to improve their tennis skills without having to sacrifice their studies. To combine high performance tennis with academic excellence so that those students that wish to continue their academic studies alongside a sporting career have access to the best scholarships at universities in the United States. To educate students through sports, positively impacting them through the transmission of values that will help their personal development. 1

5 CODE OF CONDUCT FOR ALL PLAYERS At the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, one of the main values that we want to teach is that of respect for other people; our colleagues, staff, and sporting rivals. Learning to respect is therefore part of the program. There is a standard of behaviour expected from all players as well as respecting the facilities. There is a disciplinary committee aimed at tackling transgressions. The Academy will evaluate inappropriate behaviour, taking disciplinary action where necessary, to ensure that players learn from their errors. The Disciplinary Committee reserves the right to expel the player if they consider that the behaviour is unacceptable. 2

ANNUAL PROGRAMS Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar offers 2 annual programs: The Annual Performance Program and The Annual High Performance Program. Both programs start on the 3rd September 2017 and run until 20th June The training program is personalized and tailored to the characteristics of each training group using the methodology that Toni and Rafa Nadal s team have created and developed, according to their experience on the ATP Tour. 3

7 The Annual Performance Program: This program is for players born between 1999 and 2005 inclusive. The program includes: 17 hours of tennis training. 6 hours of physical fitness training / kinesiology. One academy year of studies at the American International School of Mallorca. Trimestral report of the development of the player and video analysis. Accommodation at the supervised residency. Breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner. Medical check-up upon arrival. Medical attention, physiotherapy (if needed) and nutritional care. Sports psychological support. Tournament calendar and trip organization (according to age and level). In-competition coaching. Full program of leisure activities at the weekend. Welcome pack Advanced off-court training (technical, tactical, video analysis and mental skills). The Annual High Performance Program: Players born from 2002 and below might be eligible for the Annual High Performance Program. This decision will be based on the player s tennis level and the coaches criteria. The program includes: 24,5 hours of tennis training. 6 hours of physical fitness training / kinesiology. Online studies support. Trimestral report of the development of the player and video analysis. Accommodation at the residency. Breakfast, lunch, snack and dinner. Medical check-up upon arrival. Medical attention, physiotherapy (if needed) and nutritional care. Sports psychological support. Tournament calendar and trip organization (according to age and level). In-competition coaching. Full program of leisure activities at the weekend. Welcome pack. Advanced off-court training (technical, tactical, video analysis and mental skills). 4

8 AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF MALLORCA The American International School of Mallorca (AISM) can be found within the grounds of the Rafa Nadal Sports Centre. AISM is a vibrant co-educational school focused on bringing out the best in each other, with the school s philosophy based on the term Education in the widest possible sense. We create a happy working atmosphere, where each child can feel that he belongs and where every individual is a very important part of the whole. The teachers all look for the positive attributes of each child and encourage these, whilst discovering any weaknesses and helping in every way. It is very important for us that each child is happy in school, thus developing a love of learning, gaining confidence and security within himself/herself, which will continue for the rest of his/her life. We provide a high-quality Middle School and High School international education for boys and girls from across the world aged 12 to 18 years old. All classes are delivered in English by experienced native teachers. The breadth and diversity of our school community make for a happy, warm and supportive learning environment. Players follow a program based on the American curriculum and will leave prepared to lead rewarding lives both on a personal and professional level, with the intellectual, emotional and social qualities needed to make a positive difference to the communities in which they live. Rafa has always been loyal to a set of values that have helped him throughout his career, and which he considers essential for both personal and athletic development. Incorporating these values into the educational program has been a priority since the conception of the school. Our Middle School Program, Grades 7 and 8, sets the foundation for our players to successfully overcome the challenges they will face in High School, which will result in a seamless transition that will further build and develop their confidence. They will have awareness of the community around them and see a supportive environment that encourages each child to learn and grow as a unique individual. Our High School Program, Grades 9 to 12, has been specifically designed to prepare our players for college/university and provides them with the tools required to not only succeed but excel in higher education. They will accumulate the skills, knowledge, and experiences that will ready and motivate them to make a positive impact on their communities and on the world as a whole, as well as preparing them for the next steps beyond High School. AISM has an exhaustive SAT & TOEFL preparation program: The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a globally recognized college admission test that evaluates knowledge and the application of that knowledge in the areas of reading, writing, and math. Most players take the SAT in grades 11 and 12, and colleges and universities accept the SAT as a factor in admission decisions. The SAT is administered at AISM on specific test dates throughout the year as we are a registered SAT center. The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test to measure the English language ability of non-native speakers wishing to enroll in English-speaking universities. The test is accepted by many English-speaking academic and professional institutions. AISM is a registered TOEFL examination center. The Academy has partnered with a leading agency in obtaining scholarships to the best American universities. For those players that do not wish to continue their studies in the US, graduation from the American International School is internationally recognized and is also valid for access to university in other countries. 5

9 Online studies support One option for players who need to continue with their academic studies is online (subject to terms & conditions). This provides them with the flexibility to organize their studies around a timetable that doesn't allow for regular schooling at AISM. AISM's Online Support Programme provides a full-time supervisor to assist players in setting up and organizing their study programs and offer them continued monitoring and support. The Online player community enjoys access to a large, conducive study area with free access to WIFI. AISM's Academic staff are also on hand to help with any specific subject related problems that players encounter in their day-to-day studies. PROGRAM DETAILS Tennis Rafa, Toni Nadal and the technical team at the Academy have created the Academy s unique training system. Due to the latest materials in tennis (racquets, strings, balls ), today's tennis is a faster game and, therefore, we ensure that we produce stronger, faster and more agile players than ever before. Emerging trends clearly show that the game of tennis is becoming progressively faster; points are shorter and the start of play (serve/return) is hugely influential to the subsequent development of the point. This means that players have to be prepared to make decisions in a shorter amount of time. We understand that modern (and future) tennis is played first with the eyes, then with the mind, followed by the legs and finally with the hands. 6

10 During training, we will decide the amount of time to be dedicated to each of these aspects of play (technical, strategic, physical and mental) in order to ensure that our athletes are as competitive as possible. All training is carried out with a clear objective, applying maximum concentration, with no differentiation between training and competitive matches. Teaching Values Rafa s successes are based on the values transmitted by his team throughout his learning experience. These values are the essence of the Academy and are taught to the players in all areas of the program. Our players must be responsible for maintaining order, while demonstrating daily commitment to attitudes of good behaviour, tolerance and coexistence. Positive values such as effort, self-discipline, friendship, overcoming adversity, humility and respect are synonymous with our Academy and are the pillars on which we base the education, training and overall development of our players. All the Academy staff work together towards transmitting the core values to our players in order to aid their personal and sporting development. 7

11 Physical Training Tennis has evolved in many different ways. One important aspect is the transformation of physical preparation and the increased importance of training players from a very young age. With ever-changing equipment and increasing physical demands on the players, the challenges of the tennis circuit have never been greater. Education and Sport provide a fundamental base from which young players can face the future successfully. Physical training at Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar is based on two pillars: Coordination Skills and Injury Prevention. Coordination Skills give young players the ability to make the impossible possible, to make the possible seem easy and the easy seem elegant. Balance, reflexes, changes of rhythm and direction, footwork, anticipation and reading the ball are some of the areas linked to these skills. All of these skills will be integrated on-court and in physical training sessions, where we will carry out personalised tasks during real play. Injury Prevention forms a very important part of the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar program. Tennis is an aggressive and asymmetrical sport that can cause imbalances in our muscles and joints. The frequent surface changes can add to this strain and are a constant cause of injuries. Preventative training, which aims to minimise these risks, forms the base from which to work the following aspects: articular mobility exercises, stretching of the muscles that are prone to strains with the aim of alleviating tension; strengthening the stabilising muscles of the different areas of the body, such as the shoulder and the deep muscles of the back. To work on these aspects, the Academy has the latest fitness equipment as well as the most modern technology. Premium Service Physiotherapy Taking into account the demands of our Academy athletes, Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar places at our customers disposal a physiotherapy premium service which includes advanced sport-physio techniques. The objective being to maximize pain relief, prevent injuries and muscle discharge by applying different preventative techniques, both manual and via regenerative equipment. 12 Competition At the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, we understand that competition is a fundamental tool for the development of the athlete as a tennis player and as a person. Each player will have a tournament calendar that is constructed according to their age and tennis level, which may include local, national and international tournaments. The calendar will be established by the player s coach, together with the Head Coach and the tutor of the American International School, so that the player can combine competition with all study commitments. The calendar for each player is revised/constructed every three months. Registration, travel costs and accommodation at tournaments are not included in the price of the programs. The process of entering the players into the tournaments is conducted by each player s coach at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, and followed by logistical planning for the tournament travel. When players travel to tournaments, whether they are local, European or international, they will always travel with a coach (the number of coaches will vary depending on the number of players). After the tournament schedule has been constructed, the operations team will estimate the cost of all the tournaments for each trimester. The costs that are included are flights, accommodation, transport, food (depending on the players age), and the coach s accommodation and food expenses. If it is legally possible for a player to obtain a money card/debit card, we advise that they obtain this card and to use it to pay for their meals while travelling. The cost of each trimester schedule will be sent to the parents to be paid in advance. Throughout the annual year there will be 3 payments to the Academy for tournaments. After each trimester the operations team will revise the actual tournament costs to determine if the player has a credit or debt from each trimester. The Academy will compensate each player for each day they are away by excluding the costs of breakfast and dinner. 9

13 Nutrition Adequate nutrition has a fundamental role in life in general, especially for athletes. Good nutritional practices help to improve performance and prevent injuries. The nutritional program at the Academy is led by Rafa s personal nutritionist and is based on personalised plans according to stages and its implementation is dependent on the coordination of a team of people (coaches, physical trainers, physiotherapists, psychologists and doctors), with the ultimate aim of ensuring that the player learns to ensure that they have all of the necessary nutrients at any given time. The nutritional services offered are: Menu Preparation of healthy, balanced meals with a selection of the best-quality, fresh products from the island of Mallorca. Hydration before, during, and after training and competition, taking into account environmental conditions. Support in recovery, and prevention of injury. The Academy has its own kitchen and a team of nutritionists and cooks experienced in high performance centres. Sports Psychological support At the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, we work with sports psychology from an educational perspective, aiming for the complete development of our players, both on and off the court. The integration and implementation of a training program in psychological skills helps our players develop the good habits and attitude necessary to increase their self-awareness. This, in turn, improves their ability both on the tennis court and in their studies and engenders qualities of commitment and responsibility. 10

14 The effort required to achieve success or to accomplish goals that might seem unattainable demands discipline, loyalty, honesty and consistency in the pursuit of the goal itself. To achieve any objective, in addition to perseverance and strength, it is also important to have personal order, as this helps the player to prioritize and to organize. Improvements in communication and emotional intelligence gained through the pursuit of an established goal require strength and the ability to overcome obstacles and encourage patience, resistance, and consistency in everyday life. At the Academy, we work on decision-making in training and matches; tolerance to frustration and overcoming adversity; the different techniques of relaxation and activation, for self-control and management on court; the development of cognitive skills, for building trust; and risk management. The integration of all of the technical, tactical, physical and mental aspects of training within a common goal, offers a program for the complete development of our players at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar. 11

15 Accommodation Players stay on-site at the Academy campus which offers large and modern bedrooms, featuring en suite bathrooms with showers, desks, wardrobes, Wi-Fi connection, central heating and air conditioning. Boarding is supervised by guardians in addition to a 24/7 security service. The accommodation is divided into separate areas. The experienced staff of the Academy carefully carry out roommate allocation, taking into consideration aspects such as age and gender. Services included in accommodation Full accommodation in a shared bedroom (double rooms). Laundry service (For boarding players only). Meals. (breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner, prepared at the Academy s own kitchen) Access to Games Room. (with TV, Wi-Fi, Play Station/Wii, DVDs and other recreational games) Wi-Fi Internet access. Weekends at Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar Free time activities are adapted to the sporting calendar and academic achievement of the children. Activities are held once or twice a week (Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning) and directed by a team of educators and monitors. Weekend activities vary according to the sports calendar taking into account the wishes and requirements of the players. Our goal is to strike an ideal balance between cultural excursions that promote the values used in training at the academy and strengthen relationships between colleagues, and leisure activities of a more recreational, entertaining nature. 12

16 Medical Insurance The Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar has Health Insurance cover with one of Spain s leading insurance companies, which is included in all programs. This policy covers the athlete for both illness and injury and includes top medical specialists. As we all know, injuries form part of the normal day-to-day life of a player, especially when undertaking an intensive training program. Therefore, when an injury occurs to one of our players, the Academy has an action plan in place in order to assess the situation. We then design a personalized rehabilitation plan if the player is unable to take part in the normal tennis training sessions. The rehabilitation plan is tailored to the individual needs of the player, taking into account the injury as well as the medical, physiotherapy and physical training feedback. The ultimate goal is to minimize the effects of the injury and work hard, in controlled and supervised sessions, to get the player back on court as soon as possible. Although the ultimate aim of the whole the team is to get the injured player back on court as soon as possible, it is also our responsibility to make sure the player is fit to do so and, therefore, minimize future setbacks. Here at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, we strive to provide the player with the best service, both on and off the court, and always put the player s needs first. Players petty cash management The players at the Academy can take advantage of an Academy Bank Account, with which the administrative staff of the Academy will manage the funds of the players according to instructions from the parents or tutors. In this way, the player learns about effective and adequate resource management with the aim that they will be responsible and will eventually be able to administer their finances independently. The parents can send a certain amount to the bank account we provide and, once the player requests to withdraw money, they will have to sign a receipt so that there is a record of all transactions. 13

17 Laundry At Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, respect for others begins with respect for oneself. For this reason, we expect correct hygiene and dress from our players. The Academy has its own laundry service. Players boarding at the Academy are provided with laundry bags and can deposit their dirty laundry which will be picked up by the laundry service and delivered back to the player in a period of 72 hours. All clothes must be labelled with the name of the player. Transport An airport shuttle service is included for the players staying at the Academy for arrival/departure and for the holiday periods (Christmas and Easter), provided that we receive notification at least 48 hours in advance. All necessary flight information (date, arrival time, flight number, Airline Company, and number of people travelling) will need to be provided in order to arrange the transport accordingly. Additional transfers to other destinations or for private purposes are not included. For those players that have contracted a UM service, the Academy will provide a person at the Palma de Mallorca airport to accompany them at all times until they are delivered to the airline. The person accompanying the child will remain at the airport until the airplane takes off. We must be notified of a UM service requirement at least 72 hours in advance. If you are using a UM service, it is mandatory to reconfirm it with us prior to the flight departure in case an operational change occurs. The Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar do not have assistance personnel in other cities. 14

18 Visa and residence card VISA AND ENTRY PERMITS IN SPAIN FOR NON-EU CITIZENS Note: Please be aware that Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar provides support for all non-eu players in order to regularize each player s legal situation in Spain. In every case, it is the player and family s final responsibility to make sure all processes have been completed and all paperwork has been processed. INITIAL VISA REQUEST When the payment of the deposit has been confirmed by the Admissions Department, a letter of invitation and a proof of enrollment is sent to the parents of each player for the parents to begin the process of Visa Request in the Spanish Embassy of the country of origin. For the Annual Program, the Academy recommends that the parents check that the visa requested is a long-term visa or student visa valid for the Schengen countries and that permits unlimited entrance into Spain while traveling for tournaments. The Rafa Nadal Academy Insurance Policy can be provided to fulfil an initial visa request. SPANISH STUDENT ID CARD REQUEST (TIE) After the visa approval and within three months of the arrival in Spain, the Operations Department will request an appointment for fingerprints at Palma s Foreign Office in order to obtain the Spanish Student ID Card. This ID Card allows the residency in Spain during the studies without needing a visa. The issuing of the card takes 40 natural days. DEPARTURE AUTHORIZATIONS - RETURN AUTHORIZATIONS - NON-EUROPEAN STUDENTS During the period while students are waiting for their physical ID and in order to permit travelling abroad, authorizations of departure (return authorizations) will need to be processed by the student and family every time they leave Spain. This authorization allows to return to Spain, within 90 days, without needing a visa. RENEWAL OF PERMISSION - NON-EUROPEAN STUDENTS For those students that already have their Spanish ID and renew their stay at the Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar, a renewal process will need to be completed, once we received the confirmation of enrollment from the Admissions Department. RESIDENCE PERMIT IN SPAIN FOR EU CITIZENS All citizens belonging to a member state of the European Union, Norway, Iceland or Switzerland who are planning on residing in Spain for longer than three months are obliged to request a NIE (National Identification Number) and inscription in the Central Register of Foreign Nationals. 15

19 ADMISSIONS PROCESS, PAYMENT AND CANCELLATION POLICY Admissions process The Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar is a high-performance academy. In order to register for our programs, players must demonstrate the required level of tennis and behaviour. Enrolment in any of the Academy s programs indicates the acceptance of the Academy s code of conduct. The Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar will advise about the acceptance of the player by sending a confirmation letter together with the contract which should be completed and returned to the Academy together with the payment. Enrolment will only be confirmed and guaranteed once the Academy receives the signed contract with the payment. Rafa Nadal Academy by Movistar reserves the right of acceptance. In case of bad behaviour, on and / or off the court, the Academy might ask the player to leave the Academy and, in such cases, the Academy will not refund any paid fees. Payment 10% deposit to secure place. Payment of 40% of the total before 31st July (one month before the start of the course). Payment of the remaining 50% before 31st December. A discount of 3% of the total cost will be made in the case that the full course fee is paid before 31st July (one month before the start of the course). Please contact Admissions Department to get more information about payment options. Cancellation policy If the player decides to cancel his/her registration before full payment, he/she must inform us of this decision in writing. The player will not be entitled to any refund of the amount paid to secure the place (10% deposit). If the cancellation is at least a month before to the start of the program and the program has been fully paid, the Academy will refund 50% of the paid amount. If cancellation is after a month prior to the program start date, or after the program has started, there will be no refund of the amount paid (i.e. the participant will not be entitled to any refunds once the Program has started). 16
