1 TVSC WINTER SERIES RACE 1 Sunday 21 st April 2013 Words Bill Fenelon Photos Robyn Everingham Safety Boat Bryan Townsend Timekeeping Bill Fenelon & Robyn Everingham Sausage Sizzling Frank Paice Our first race of the club s THIRD Winter Series was of course an awesome event with the largest and most competitive fleet to sail on the river for many years. 29 Boats faced the starter including 6 corsairs 3 NS s 3 Sabres, 2 Lasers, 4 multihulls and 4 Access 303 dinghies, plus our first junior to complete a solo race in a sabot. A packed 1pm Briefing at the tent With so many boats we had 2 starts 10 minutes apart with the slower boats getting away in front of the main fleet. It s always nice to have some time out in front eh Wayne! (Wayne sails the Clubs Topper) Start Number Two Access dinghies also started with the first division and Stewart and Sam McPherson from Northern rivers Sailability put on a great show, demonstrating these boats can be quick, by chasing close behind Wayne for most of the race. Craig Scanlan and Toni Collins also sailed their Access well after a mishap getting too friendly with the start line buoy held them up! Also in this division a treat to see Duncan Gibbs on his beautifully restored Mirror and Lilli Oniper, creating another FIRST for the Club by being the first Junior to race SOLO on the river in a Sabot. Well done Lilli, a pioneer of the juniors program, and hopefully an inspiration for many more juniors to graduate from Jack Evans Boat Harbour. Right Lilli Oniper From the river bank it was a great sight. A moderate southerly wind had them all powered up and made the race exciting to watch. For the first time, I had real difficulty in identifying which boat was which especially all the corsairs! Helping in the Tent was Robyn Everingham, accurately recording the lap times of every boat, an essential task to ensure all you sailing efforts are correctly compiled. This was the first time all 6 Corsairs sailed together - we are becoming one of the state s largest Corsair fleets quite amazing from 1 Corsair in June The fleet s next target should be a National Corsair Championship. The NS fleet was also boosted with Tony Oniper, now sailing with Megan Oniper, putting on a very strong effort, sticking close behind Adam, and actually getting home before Tony Lochead. This class was short two regular boats, Paul Ulhman s and Enzo Carrara s Tasars were not able to attend.

2 We had 6 new boats on the scene this week, we had Greg Schofield in his Weta, flying round the course to take line honours, Lilli Oniper in Club Sabot Jacaranda City, Luke Rich in his new laser, Lex Branch sailed his new Sabre (giving the Weta a rest) so that makes 3 Sabres and qualifies them for the third separate racing class in the club. Northern Rivers Sailability bought two Access 303 s and the Tweed Sailability crew also brought 2 boats in their new trailer and Tim Thomas took one of them out. Right: Northern Rivers Sailability Crew SCRATCH RESULTS These results are Scratch Results Only as, at the time of writing, Adam s handicap results had not reached me out on the Timor Sea. The overall winter series is based on handicap corrected times, and the One Design classes, NS s and Corsairs are racing on scratch results for the winter class championship. (Handicap results have been added to the end of the report.) DIVISION ONE First to finish was Lily Oniper in a Club Sabot. After completing her required one lap, but division winner was Wayne Freeman in the Topper, getting three laps in and being 2 minutes in front of the next boat. Second was Duncan Gibbs in his Mirror (3 laps) then 3 rd was Stuart and Sam Macpherson in an access th place went to Craig Scanlan, sailing with Toni Collins.(Access 303). 5 th place went to Lily Oniper in Club Sabot and 6 th was Local sailor Timothy Thomas also sailing an Access 303. Tim was let down by a late start but his lap times indicate he will win this class if he gets to the start on time! Left Frank Paice + Daisy & Saraya (Corsair) + Craig & Toni (Access) MULTIHULLS 1 st place went to Greg Schofield on his Weta who led from the start, closely followed by Julian Miles on his 14ft surfcat, having one of his best days sailing, obviously enjoying the breezy conditions. Daniel Trotman and son Zac (Hobie 16), also had a good day and passed Roger Garland on the last lap getting home 50 seconds before him. So Roger, with guest sailor Hollie Bailey, finished fourth. Roger would have been faster one up but it s great that he shared the joy of sailing with a visitor. Hollie had lots of fun in her time in the Tweed Valley (the best place in the world!) I m sure sailing was a highlight. Left a crowded start line! Greg Schofield (Weta Tri)

3 MONO HULLS Very tight racing amongst the mono hulls. First Place scratch and first NS was Adam Hurt, sailing with Kerry Warren. 2 nd place and 1 st Single hander was Peter Skinner in Sabre Still Dreamin, only 40 seconds behind Adam at the end. It was a close race between these two, although Adam stayed in front all the way, at times the gap was only 20 seconds. 3 rd Place and 2 nd NS was Tony & Megan Oniper, finishing 3 minutes behind Adam, after being only 30 seconds behind after one lap. Possibly Tony s best result yet, despite him and Megan also probably being slightly nervous watching regular NS crew, daughter Lilli, sailing around solo in a Sabot for the first time. They were suitably impressed. 4th place scratch and 3 rd NS was Summer Series NS Class Champion team, Tony Lochead and Charlotte Pym. Tony and Charlotte had an average start but fought back well. Down by 3 minutes to Tony and Megan on lap one, they clawed back one minute per lap and finished only one minute behind the Onipers. Tony s last lap of 18 minutes was the quickest of all the NS s, maybe due to a desperate battle to get in front of Geoff Colwill s Corsair, which he trailed all race until the final beat to the finish, getting home in front of Geoff by 6 seconds. Next came the Corsairs Team Oniper 5 th place and 1 st Corsair was Geoffrey Colwill, sailing with Nathan MacDonald and one other crew from the Northern Rivers Sailability team, winning the Corsairs convincingly. Good to see Geoff back in the winner s circle after having sinking problems with his boat. 6 th place and 2 nd Corsair was Alison Blatcher, sailing with new member Richard Dossett and Tim Jensen. These guys had a good race and Alison was very happy with her new crew. They lost one minute to Geoff on the first lap and were unable to get it back, but finished only one minute behind at the end and only one minute and 6 seconds behind Tony Lochead s NS. 7 th place and 3 rd Corsair was Commodore, Hugh Milliken sailing with Fingal local Dave in Barry Southagte s Corsair Alouetta. Dave turned out to be a keen crew and they finished 50 seconds behind Alison close on her heels all the way. Not bad considering this was his first race in a Corsair. Barry was busy selling his beautiful Red boat Possum. 8 th Place and 4 th Corsair was Michael Murray, sailing with Simon Hill. This was Michael s first race in his new Corsair a very good performance. Michael has just traded in his old boat, a Vagabond, for the Corsair. We will see some good results from Michael in the future ( Michael is an Ex 18 foot skiff sailor) 9 th place and 2 nd single hander was Summer Series winner Rob Westmorland, having a tough day struggling with his Laser in the windy conditions. Lasers are real Ab busters in stronger winds but Rob has the Ab s to do the job these days!

4 10 th place and 5 th Corsair was Frank Paice, sailing with Daisy Collier & daughter Saraya. 11 th place and 6 th Corsair was John Kennaugh, sailing with Bernie Baguely. 12 th place 3 rd single hander was Lex Branch on his new sabre 13 th place and 4 th single hander was Glenn Slight in a Spiral L-R: Glen Slight (Spiral) L-R: Duncan Gibbs (Mirror), Lex & Luke Rich (Laser) Branch (Sabre), & Wayne (Topper) 14 th and 5 th single hander was Luke rich having his first sail on his new Laser and 15 th and 6 th single hander was Steve Monk, finishing after a prolonged capsize. Other boats out sailing, we had Tom Weiss and, first time sailing with the, club Malcolm Maiden on Tom s 16 ft skiff. Tom s really done a great job on this boat and was looking really fast. This boat will be very hard to beat when conditions are more suitable and they get their heads around it Finally, a big thank you to Tweed Sailability for bringing the boats (Access 303 s) which allowed Tim Thomas to race against the Northern Rivers guys. Thanks to Kevin, Dave, Bob, Warren and Carla from Tweed Sailability. Hopefully we will see more of these guys and more people with disabilities joining us in races. Good work! AND if anyone has time spare on a Wednesday or Monday morning to help out at Sailability contact Kevin on and even better if you know anyone who want to learn to sail but is restricted in any way and cannot sail standard sailing dinghies also give Kevin a call. Pre start capsize practice! Bill got to sail! bringing the Sabot home Lex, Geoffrey, Julian & Bill Tom Weiss & Malcolm Maiden Hillary, Sam & Stewart Frank Paice & Tim Jensen Tim Thomas & Julian Miles (Nice T-Shirt Julian!)
