1 Hello and welcome to the next quarterly newsletter to keep you informed with what is the latest happenings in the Men s and Mixed versions of the great game we all love Netball. Men s Nationals September 2013 This year saw even more teams entered with 5 A grade teams, Cook Strait made an appearance in this grade for the first time. B grade saw 9 teams competing for the title this was made up of the two masters teams from Canterbury and Wellington as we are still attempting to grow the numbers in this grade. We had our first invitational team the Australian under 17 s playing in the under 23 s grade, who enjoyed their time in NZ we hope to see you again soon. Also mother nature came to play by disrupting flights and cause the tournament management team a few headaches and grey hairs but we pushed through and after day one were back on track to an action packed tournament. What s happening around the different region s: Regional Contact details on the Netball NZ website Auckland Trials for Mixed Nationals November 24 th contact Eddie Erick: eddieerick@gmail.com. Taupo Queens Birthday weekend tournament contact Lara: lara@mefsc.org.nz For more information go to the Netball NZ website for a list of the currently active affiliated clubs and the contact people for these clubs. I am sure they will welcome your interest, support and participation in what is going on locally. Special Mention - Men s Nationals 2014 This will be the 30 th year of Men s Netball nationals in New Zealand and we are going back to where it all started back to Rotorua. We hope to see some life members there, along with current players and hopefully some new faces too. I know that the players from that region are busy organising it and looking forward to hosting us all in 2014 Trophies Uniform (Life Members trophy) Award went to Cook Strait, congratulations. Sportsmanship Award went to Southland Fairplay Award went to Auckland 19 s Goal Aggerate Award went to North Harbour A
2 Mens Under 23 s Five teams were entered with one being from Australia. Cook Strait were a force to be reckoned with and finished first seeds and also nationals champs after downing Canterbury in the final Mens B This grade saw the return of Southland and their stunning management team Sarah and Angee always a delight and pleasure. As mentioned in the masters section Canterbury Masters went through the round robin undefeated showing everyone that will their bodies might not quite be what they use to be but the skills were still there all be a bit slower and they ended out taking the title and maintaining their unbeaten status. Playing Nelson/Tasman in the finals Masters Over 35 s We only had two teams so they played in the B grade, they represented themselves very well and showed their class on court. Wellington masters just missed out on the playoffs by finishing 5 th after round robin play. Canterbury masters were another story finishing undefeated after round robin and went into the semis as first seeds, more about how they did in the next section. Men s A This saw a number of close results in the round robin play of the tournament between the teams, with Canterbury losing their first game in years to North Harbour. The final would see these two teams contesting it ones again but this time the game went into overtime. This was a game to watch as it showcased just what the game can be with skill, athleticism, heart, determination and teamwork all on display. Canterbury continued their national championship title grip in the end though to win the final Well done to both teams for a riveting final you should all hold your heads up high for the fantastic display that you put on display
3 Often the most thankless job in tournaments, the villains or the heroes depending on their calls and what team you are supporting. Quite often the umpires come off the court sweating almost as much as some of the players. But the New Zealand Men s and Mixed Netball association would like to offer you our sincerest thanks as we are aware that without officials and volunteers there is no tournament. With the support of Netball New Zealand at Men s Nationals we had an umpiring coaching panel, which allowed umpires to progress through the different levels of certification. A special thank you goes out to the umpiring panel Gareth Fowler, Pam Clayton, and Linda Liggins. We hoped you enjoyed the tournament and hope to see you again in Auckland for the Mixed Nationals. Bench / Technical Officials Thank you all for your time and efforts over the tournament your expertise is very much approached. A big thanks goes out to Cathy Edmonds, Sue George, Ella Uritaua, John Neho, Greg Barbet, Julie Shaw, Wendy Colledge, Rangi Wano, and Darne Rawiri. Umpires To our umpires: Gareth Fowler, Maru Delamere, Greg Barbet, Dwayne Paul, Zak Middleton, Jessie Tapatahi, Mary McCarthy, Myron Elkington, Tai Pirato, Clare Seymour, Jennifer Wray, Litia Raibetu, Anthony Karauria, Darne Rawirir, Cory Nichols, Tony Gardner, Raijeli Raibetu, Tere Barton, Greg Barbet, MAree Smith, Ken Metekingi, Sue James, Kelly Taingahue, Micheal Wyllie, Lagi Tuamavavr, Raewyn Vile, Damon Ruki, Kate Smith. David Pala amo who took time out to contribute to our tournament a big thank you goes out to you. To anyone I may have missed off this list my apologies but a big thanks to your contributions as well. If any umpires are interested in representing NZ for the upcoming trans-tasman tour we are looking for four individuals to come over to NSW and participate in the tour as well. Please send your expression of interest asap as we would like you to be umpiring the trials from which the New Zealand representatives will be selected. There is a form to complete available off the Netball NZ website officials application form, please get it back to the NZMMNA secretary as soon as possible.
