BOARD OF DIRECTORS 2017 Rick Takatsch Peter Luciano Teresa Nila Joanna Romersa Chip Munk Leisa Bell Tony Reyes Aija Klebers Cherie Flavin Carolanne Carter Lael Burns Janet Steinberg Mike Smith Rick Keen Tommy Zagaroli Check out SUS at President Commodore Vice Commodore Secretary Treasurer Co-Director of Membership Co-Director of Membership Co-Director of Special Events Co-Director of Special Events Director of Public Relations Director of Newsletter Director of Sailing Events Director of Skippers Director of Programs Director of Education A PAGE OUT OF AN OLD BOOK BUT TIMELY The sailing season is here. La Buona Vita is in the water along with many other club boats. Skippers will be looking for crew and crew seeking berths. We should all take the time at the beginning of the season to review some points on safety. 1 Skippers should review with new crew members the checklist found in the MOP, and make available for review the yacht's diagram showing the location of ship's stores as well as vital parts of the yacht. 2. Crew should consider putting important contact information, as well as medical information in a sealed envelope that would be kept on board for the duration of the sailing event. 3. All should focus on having fun and enjoying the sail as well as the company. To that end, over time, I have put together the following list based on personal experience and input from others. Ships rules: If you touch it, put it back If you break it, tell the owner Ask before touching if you are not familiar with it When you are not sure, ASK! Ask the owner or tell the helms person before trimming sails Personal safety comes first, but a close second is the ship. Don't open the refrigerator unless you know where things are stowed. Ask the owner or helms person before opening ports, and if you open one, you are responsible for tending to it and closing it at the end of the sail. Consideration of others: * Think of others before you think of yourself. * Only use water sparingly, take threegallon showers, water on any yacht is in short supply. * No personal gear in the main salon. * Cell phones should be used sparingly, if at all.* Clean up after yourself, a clean ship is a happy one. * Pack lightly and use soft luggage, space is limited. * Ask owner before bringing electronic equipment on board. Safety: * ALWAYS, one hand for the boat and one for you * When at the helm, limit interaction with others, pay attention or give up the helm. All lives are in your hands. * At night, stay in the cockpit. If you must go forward, someone else MUST be in the cockpit and you must hook on *Make sure you sleep, eat and drink plenty of water when on a passage. It's hard to eat and sleep in a storm Again, enjoy the 2017 season and skippers should give some thought to having our yachts safety checked by the USCG Auxiliary or US Power Squadron. REPRINT FROM JUNE 2013

Hello Everyone, Our summer sailing season is in full swing. We ve had some great Sailaways and Parties already, and there s lots more fun to be had by everyone. Come join in on the fun at our Summer Cruise Kick-Off on July 29 th with a Skipper Sponsored BBQ at Pequannock Yacht Club in New Haven. Please contact me if you plan to attend by land or by sea. Please bring a side dish to share and your own alcoholic beverage. If you wish to meet up with the cruise at any of the destinations, here is the schedule: July 31 Fishers Island YC Aug 1 Point Judith, Anchorage in Harbor of Refuge Aug 2 Cuttyhunk Marina Aug 3 & 4 Oak Bluffs, Martha s Vineyard Aug 5 Quicks Hole anchorage near Cuttyhunk Aug 6 Crew change over at Dutch Harbor, Jamestown, RI Aug 9 Orient Point Aug 10 Shelter Island YC Aug 11 Pilots Point, Westbrook Aug 12 Mount Sinai YC In other news The SUS Board reorganization is complete. As of Jan 1, 2018 the Board will have 4 less positions. Thanks to our Vice Commodore, Teresa Nilla, who kept the committee on track, we eliminated 5 positions (Membership Co-Director, Special Events Co-Director, Director of Sailing Events, Director of Education & Director of Skippers) and added one position (Vice President). Simply put, the Co-Directors were combined into just one Director. Sailing Events and Education were combined into Vice Commodore. The Director of Skippers combined into Commodore and the Vice President will be doing the administrative tasks that are currently done by the Vice Commodore. I m sad to report that one of our more popular boats, La Buona Vita, is out of commission until further notice. I m asking all the skippers in the club to make an effort to take our more members for the rest of this sailing season in order to make up for the 30+ members that normally would sail with LBV. I would love to tell you the tales of my sailing adventure to Bermuda but I have run out of room for this article. In short, it was a beautiful trip with only one short storm and I got to see the America s Cup in person. Stay safe and have fun this summer! Rick DIRECTOR OF SAILING EVENTS Janet Steinberg Feeling excitement in the air? It's only a few days before the beginning of the SUS CLUB CRUISE This year promises to be a most exiting event, involving some further flung and less visited destinations Preparations have been underway for some time, skippers and crew planning together. As of printing there are 8 boats participating in the cruise, some for both week, others one week or even part of a week. Sadly this year La Buona Vita will be on the hard for much needed repairs and unable to participate. People meeting people is one of the great rewards of sailing on the cruise - spending time with old friends and opportunities to make new friends. Sharing meals together is one of the ways we get to spend time with friends and eating out in new or favorite restaurants is one way to to this. ANOTHER, just as exciting way is cooking aboard on the boat or sharing pot luck suppers ashore with other crew. Simple food is the way to go, grilling and barbecuing being favorites and one pot meals are the way to go!

Contact Sailing Events (Janet Steinberg) by crewsails@gmail.com or call/text cell phone Remember, Twilight Sails, and Daysails and attending membership meetings are the best way to meet skippers and other members making for happy and compatible crew choices. SUS TWILIGHT SAILS Twilight Sails offer a opportunity for members to sail during the week, after work, from 6pm to around 9pm. (Twilight, yes?) These sails provide a wonderful way to unwind after a hard day, meet new members, get some lay back instruction and well, enjoy a beautiful sunset. TWILIGHT PROCESS The Twilight Sail schedule including boats, skippers and dates may change without notice at the discretion of the skipper. All sails are weather permitting. Be sure to bring sailing gloves, proper deck shoes, foul weather gear etc. HOW TO SIGN UP Contact the skipper! Don t be shy! The Twilight Sail schedule indicates how the skipper would like to be contacted - by or phone. Advance notice of, say, 24 hours is suggested. Members may also enter their request on the member area on the website, at crewsails@gmail.com., or contact the. Sailing Events Director, Janet, ( ) who will be able to assist. SOME GUIDELINES Keep in mind that you are the guest of the skipper. The skipper has full authority to accept or decline guest(s) on his or her boat. Try to get to the boat on time. The general meeting time is hours (6:00PM). Boats normally leave the dock before hours (6:30PM). If you are stranded in traffic, call the skipper (assuming you have a cell phone). Participation is on a first sign-up, first served basis. Although we will try to accommodate everyone, capacity on boats is limited, and we don t overload boats. We cannot guarantee participation with sign-up. Once back at the dock, we usually have a short sundowner happy hour. Bring something to share and your own beverage. And don t overstay...for most folks, there is work tomorrow. Enjoy your Twilight Sail!

SINGLES UNDER SAIL Program Meeting Thursday, August 17th 2017, 7:30 p.m. Doubletree Inn, 789 Connecticut Ave, Norwalk, CT $10.00 door charge headline: storms, winds, mud & sand! Storms wind mud & sand! During Irene and Sandy, Connecticut s beaches played a critical role in limiting storm wave damages to homes, roads and other infrastructure along the coast. In communities where beaches were narrow to non-existent at high tide, e.g., places like Fairfield Beach, Milford and East Haven, destruction was at a maximum. Beaches are excellent energy absorbers and can buffer coastal development against the energy of storm waves. Under normal conditions, sand that is eroded from beaches during winter storms is restored to the beach during fair weather conditions because the characteristics of the waves change. However, along the Connecticut shore, fair weather waves with enough energy to return eroded sand to the beaches are filtered out by the presence of Long Island. As a result of storms, Connecticut s beaches erode systematically leaving shoreline structures at increasing risk. At a time when we face rising sea level and potentially more frequent and more intense storms, Connecticut s coast is highly vulnerable to the next big one. Come hear Dr. James Tait speak about his interests in storms, wind, mud & sand. Dr. Tait received a Ph. D. is Earth Sciences, with a specialty in coastal oceanography, from the University of California at Santa Cruz. His current research focuses on the coastal impacts of large storms such as Irene and Sandy. He is co-founder and cocoordinator of the Werth Center for Coastal and Marine Studies at SCSU. He has worked with coastal communities to develop resilience in the face of rising sea level and storm intensification. One of his most cherished accomplishments is being included in the surfing movie Beyond Monster Mavericks.

SINGLES UNDER SAIL Thursday, August 17 th 2017 Doubletree INN, 789 Connecticut Ave, Norwalk, CT $5.00 SUS Member $10.00 Guest door charge if stay for presentation...announcing Storm Tactics from 6:00 to 7:45 P.M. as a prelude to our 8:00 presentation.. What can be more terrifying than a storm as sea? Storm Tactics by Lin and Larry Pardey is a 84 minute tutorial. It demonstrates a time-proved technique in storm conditions for sailboats in the configuration normally sailed by Singles Under Sail. This Cape Horn tested technique delivers the skills you need to weather storms with confidence. Larry Pardey coaches sailors on storm tactics -as the seas build and the rigging starts howling. Filmed in locations around the world: Norway, twice across the Atlantic, south to Argentina, into the Pacific, around Cape Horn (against the prevailing winds) then on a circuit of the North Pacific. It is an extreme survival tutorial for sailors. Mario Vittone, a U.S. Coast Guard rescue swimmer for 14 years, in an unsolicited testimony, wrote: I have been on several rescues that would have been completely unnecessary if the sailboat captains aboard would have practiced the skills taught by Lin and Larry Pardey. Not knowing how to heaveto in bad weather is as inexcusable as not knowing red, right, return! Storm Tactics discusses survival in extreme conditions. By using sail power with a sea anchor, "heaving-to" can be useful as a method to keep the crew well rested, to effect repairs and to steady a vessel. This movie covers the insights gained from: adding rudder protection stops; avoiding chafe; using storm staysails; choosing storm gear; deploying para-anchors; avoiding the worst areas of cyclonic storms and many more techniques. With proper planning, you may never need to do this. Sailors of olden times - without engines, charts or weather forecasting abilities, developed this survival technique to explore the oceans of the world. The concept is to cause a slick or a forward surface barrier to distort the turbulent pattern of the approaching sea state. It uses the hull & keel to block turbulence. Modern sailors can benefit by knowing this classic method. It can be used to bring sailing vessels through amazingly strong winds (60-90 knots) and heavy seas. This is renowned as the only storm tactic to absorb the power of breaking seas. After this technique - lying ahull is the only remaining choice. As a bonus (based on internet reliability).. watch - terrifying u-tube segments of ships at sea-in storms!
