1 Lesson 1 Balance Balance Beam, Arrows, Tape Opening Song Friends Song o Introduce myself o Introduce skill development which is balance, what is it? Balance o Have students still sitting in circle and demonstrate different balancing skills such as Balance on one foot (switch feet) Sitting and balancing on bottom V Seat Tip toes and hands (bottom in air) like a bridge (take one hand away) or (put one foot in the air) Kneeling Kneel on one knee o Have arrows placed in a zig-zag line and have students follow the leader with One foot in front of the other with airplane arms out like they are walking on a tight rope (help for balance, make sure students are standing up straight with head forward) Act like they are flying like a plane on one foot (who can do it the longest) Imitate different animals Flap arms like a bird, walk on tip toes, Jump with both feet, like a kangaroo, Squat, jump like a frog, Hands and feet on the ground, like a bear o Break into groups and have students demonstrate balancing while walking across the balance beam/tape on floor. o What is balance? What did we do today? Can you show the class what you learned? Suggestions for classroom teachers: Students can sit in chair with legs up and arms out for balance (airplane) Tightrope walk, tip toe, march to water fountain or to line up
2 Lesson 2 HOP AND JUMP Polyspots Scarves/ something to grab. Cones Opening Song Friends Song o Introduce myself o Review briefly what we learned last week (balancing skills) o Introduce skill development- Jump and Hop o Hop and Jump (with demonstration) incorporates balance Jump (in place), jump your age then stop Jumping with 2 feet ( forward/backward, side to side) Hop (in place) your age then stop Hopping with 1 foot ( forward/backward, side to side) o Hopping Set up- 3-4 cones, already set up, in a straight line in various spots in gym Instruction- Students hop on one foot, weaving in and out through the cones. They should be encouraged to change feet after each try. Jumping station will follow- students have to squat like a frog to get to the next station. o Jumping Set up- Several poly spots already set up in zig zag formation around gym Instruction- Students jump like a kangaroo with 2 feet from one poly spot to the other, once they get to the last poly spot, student jumps up high with two feet and grabs animal from instructor. o Review how to jump and hop correctly Have students jump or hop to o Line up at the door o Get a drink of water
3 Lesson 3 Obstacle Course Cones, scarves, balance bean, hoops Opening Song Friends Song o Review balance, jumping, hoping while sitting in circle Introduce new song Athletes in the class (new opening song from now on) o Athletes in the class will jump up high o Athletes in the class will balance on one foot o Athletes in the class will throw and catch o Athletes in the class will hop on one foot Athletes in the class with scarf o Athletes in the class will throw and catch o Athletes in the class will throw and catch with the other hand o Athletes in the class will throw and catch with elbow o Athletes in the class will throw and catch on their head o Athletes in the class will throw and catch on their foot o Athletes in the class will throw and catch on their knee o Athletes in the class will throw and let the scarf fall to the floor o Obstacle Course o Have 4 cones set up in zig zag formation and have students jump with two feet around the cone in a circle, then move to the next cone and then the next.. (like a figure 8) o Have students leap like a frog to the balance beam o Walk across balance beam like an airplane o Jump like a kangaroo to the next station o Have 2 hula hoops next to each other have student hop 5 times on one foot, then go to the next hula hoop and hop with the other foot o Have students bear crawl to make a circle again o Athletes in the class will clap their hands o Use the scarves in the kit o Students/Athletes in the class will Throw and catch (Switch hands)
4 Lesson 4 Toss and Catching Scarves, cones, hoops Opening Song Athletes in the class o Touch their toes o Jump up and Down o Balance on one foot o Toss and Catch o Review Toss and Catch with Scarves Toss and catch with 2 hands Review multiple times o Toss and Catching (model for them how to use proper foot forward, step and toss with bean bag) Have students toss and catch with a partner Have students with partner take turns tossing at the hoop on the floor o Next, have a station set up with a cone and a hula hoop connected at the top, have students toss in thru the hoop three times o Athletes in the class will toss and catch o Use the scarves in the kit o Students/Athletes in the class will Toss and Catch (Switch hands)
5 Lesson 5 Overhand Toss Scarves, bean bags Opening Song Athletes in the class o Toss and Catch o Model tic toc formation o Add scarf to toss and catch o Toss thru hoop on cone review Make sure students are using proper underhand toss with strong hand Foot forward o Introduce Overhand Throw with NO scarf Model proper technique of overhand throw Foot forward Overhand throw with strong hand o Overhand Throw to target on wall Throw bean bags with proper foot stepping forward, bean bag in strong hand to the target on the wall o Athletes in the class will overhand throw o Athletes in the class will step and throw Toss to different targets in the classroom
6 Lesson 6 Catching with Two Hands Bean bags, balls, beach balls, hoop Opening Song Athletes in the class o Toss and catch o Step and throw o Catch with 2 hands o Introduce new skill, catching with 2 hands o Review Overhand Throw Throw into hoop with ball o Practice Catching in circle Bean Bags Balls Beach Balls o Toss and catch with adult Students will form a circle, adult in the middle toss and catch with each student in the circle Switch to ball after using bean bags and beach balls Make sure students have eyes on ball, catch with 2 hands and hands extend towards object Take a step back after first turn to make it more difficult o Athletes in the class will toss and catch o Athletes in the class will step and throw o Athletes in the class will catch with 2 hands If the teacher asks a question to the class and a student raises their hand to answer, the teacher could toss different objects from the equipment bag (small rubber balls, medium size balls, bean bags) to student who was called on (have student catch with 2 hands) to answer the question.
