Everyday Arias or Sorano and Orchestra by Carrie Leigh age A Dissertation resented in artial ulillment o the Requirements or the Degree Doctor o Musical Arts Aroved Aril 2011 by the Graduate Suervisory Committee: Rodney Rogers, Chair enamin Levy ames DeMars Robert Oldani ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY May 2011

ASTRACT Everyday Arias or sorano and orchestra as comosed largely in Arizona and comleted in ebruary 2011 The text as taken rom a small collection o the comoser s on oetry reerencing her memories o lie in rural Mississii Everyday Arias endeavors to elevate these rosaic exeriences and settings to art, exressing the everyday as beautiul and orthy o artistic treatment The rimary comositional model or this ork as Samuel arber s Knoxville: Summer o 1915, but other inluences included Charles Ives, Aaron Coland, enamin ritten, and Dominick Argento arber s and Argento s musical treatment o rose style seemed articularly aroriate to the goals o Everyday Arias Ives and Coland used hymn tunes both to evoke certain associations o orshi and as sources o interesting material The vocal riting o all ive comosers as inluential, but the orchestration techniques or inds are largely a roduct o studying Ives and Argento, hile many string gestures are more obviously tied to ritten and more historically Debussy The rimary motive that eaves through the ork eatures an ascending maor second olloed by a descending erect ourth, in a long-short-long rhythmic attern As a melodic ragment, the motive is oten inverted to a descending-ascending attern, or distorted slightly by exanding the second interval to a erect ith, or used in retrograde The motive as derived rom the irst measure o the melody Tolady (180) by Thomas Hastings, better knon as the hymn Rock o Ages In the irst movement, the motive is used most requently in sequences The second movement treats the motive as a melodic element and as a unit in ostinati The inal movement humorously transorms it into a syncoated gesture to evoke ragtime i
o Mississii DEDICATION I ish to dedicate this ork to my hard-orking, aith-illed grandarents and to the eole ii
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I ould like to thank Dr Rodney Rogers and Dr ames DeMars, ho shared their combined ealth o exerience in orchestration and tis or beating comoser s block I also ish to thank Dr enamin Levy, hose direction ith my analysis roects inallibly heled me ind ne resources as a comoser, and Dr Robert Oldani, ho immediately understood and areciated the nostalgic, humorous, and gentle intents o the oetry o Everyday Arias iii
ROGRAM NOTES Rock ranch as the irst movement ritten or Everyday Arias Rock ranch atist Church is a small church on the outskirts o the ton o Union, Mississii (itsel on the outermost skirts o Meridian, some 0 miles aay) This is the small country church here my maternal grandarents orshied, and it is the setting or some o my earliest memories The oetry and music is meant to evoke scenes rom the small, arm community, and I made deliberate use o tunes I remember rom that time Motives derived rom the hymn Rock o Ages eave throughout, but one may also hear sniets rom Let Us reak read Together (oten a communion hymn) and The Old Rugged Cross (oten a uneral hymn) at aroriate moments in relation to the text Though Rock ranch as conceived as one movement ithin Everyday Arias, it may be erormed as a standalone ork Daylilies, resented as the irst movement o this ork, culls its itch material rom the same motive that orms Rock ranch, but resents the ste olloed by a ourth or ith as a igure rom hich to build overlaing sequences and ostinati that maintain a ast-aced drive throughout the song The visual image o a orn house o a dirt road, surrounded by daylilies, is the memory o my grandarents arm outside Union The constant motion in this song relects to things: the movement o ind that ould cause loers to dance or ine dust to blo in rom the road, and the sense o leeting time The inal movement, Old and Ne, resents the ste-lea motive as a ragtime igure The ragtime in this song, hoever, is a bit ungainly and halting, ho I imagine an elderly, teetotalling Southern atist church lady ith bad knees might dance i suddenly ossessed by such a devilish urge The brassy syncoated anare rom mm 1-8 serves a ritornello unction, returning in mm 8-8 and again in an interruted orm in mm iv
TEXTS by Carrie Leigh age I Daylilies Summer s reedom is tinged ith the color orange A dirt road A metal roo A ro o daylilies That surrising delicacy: ree along the roadside, Almost a eed, but genteel enough to lant in a ro alongside the eather-beaten house and be a small leasure rom May to October Hainess rested, aiting on a stretch o unaved road and a house embraced in the color orange II Rock ranch Rock ranch as a claboard church, old and hite One summer, some enterrising reacher soed corn and squash and atermelons behind it and rayed or a harvest o souls Miss Myrtle sang her raises rom the ront e She made oyul noise unto the Lord, though the Lord and everyone kne it as nothing to rite home about Others marked their seats ith hand-crocheted cushions I the cushions ere emty, e kne ho to ray or, and i the cushions ere gone, e kne hat amily ould need a casserole and roer symathy Salvation rang seeter than any bell could have The communion trays assed quietly over roadman hymnals and children s heads, sticky ith grae uice doctrine We anned our aces on the cement stoo Everyone sread across the grass, sloly migrating to duty, sensible cars rolling onto the dusty road v
