FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello everyone As I write this we are in the last week before Christmas and looking back on the year it has been very eventful. Since this time last year we have been to Taupo twice and the two Auckland track six times. We have been involved along with Northern Sports Car and Hibiscus Coast car clubs in the facilitating and running of our Far North Rally and we also put on another great display at this years Speed Show. For me though I would say our finest moment was the Roll of Honour ceremony in which 20 more deserving individuals were inducted. It always amazes me how many Auckland Car Club members have gone on to become great international competitors and have achieved so much, not to mention the many New Zealand titles that they hold. Then you have the dedicated people that have donated their time and efforts over the years, and in many cases continue to do so, with the club and its endeavours either as competitors, volunteers and committee members (sometimes - all of the above) and it is great to see these people are recognised for what they have done. With positive sometimes there are sometimes negatives and this year we were a little disappointed as one very special race meeting never eventuated. This meeting had many hours of planning and preparation only to be postponed due to eventualities that were outside of our control resulting in another organisation taking over our track date. Many of you will know before I even type the words that I am talking of the hugely anticipated Thunder in the Park meeting. This meeting is owned and controlled by the NZIGP and along with Auckland Car Club s assistance was due to make a return earlier in December. But I do have some good news as the Australian Supercars have decided to vacate their existing date in November and have moved to September so we have leapt on their old date to secure it for Thunder in the Park. We have a lot of details to work through before we release too much but we will keep everyone up to date as things progress. We will be continuing with our work around the clubrooms as early as we can in the new year and on the agenda is fencing to at least the two side boundaries along with completing the carpark area with hot-mix at the rear of the new carpark that was completed a couple of years ago. Chris Watson and Tim Hill are keen to continue on basing their operations out of the clubrooms also so we might look at better accommodation for them in the way of an external office in this new carpark area.

Finally, without sounding like a broken record, we are still looking for energetic people to help out at committee level or as volunteers at some of our race events so if you would like to become a bit more involved please don t be shy in coming forward. That s all for now, enjoy your Christmas break and have a great New Years. Brett Davy Well done Scott McLaughlin, 2018 Supercars Champion Source Getty Images

PRODUCTION RACE SERIES ROUND 3 This one was a pretty eventful round for us, it saw us with a 30 plus grid with a wide range of different cars. We had 3 races and our first one hour of the season which was eventful with the Panda boys going home to re-build another engine and Andrew Leech having a slight heating issue that required the assistance of a fire extinguisher and some quick thinking. However we all had a great time and enjoyed the relatively awesome weather and racing. Well done to Dion Clerke who had the fastest lap of the day with a 1:40.5 and congratulations to Phil Hall for winning the one hour endurance race. We all hope you have a great Christmas with your families and friends and we look forward to seeing you in the New Year.

ROTARY RACING ENTHUSIASTS Round 3 Saturday the 18th of November saw the 3rd round of NZRRE's season at the fabulous Bruce McLaren Motorsport Park, in sometimes sunny Taupo. A good selection of cars turned up, with Darryl Palmers lightening quick 13b Turbo series 1 Rx- 7 topping the charts with a 1: Garry Carswell brought his beautifully prepared FD Rx-7 up from Waipukarau and was the quickest in the Naturally Aspirated (NA) Rotary class in Qualy with a tidy 1: Julius Coffey's green Rx-3 machine rounding out the top 3 qualifiers with a respectable 1: Newcomer to the class Hayden Woodhead topped the novice charts and qualified 4th overall with a solid 1: NZRRE combined with Production Race Series (PRS) saw an exciting total of 31 cars out on track. The weather was windy, with a bit of cloud, leading to a coolish track which some described as "a bit slippy". Race 1 was an eight lap grid start based on fastest qualifying times. Darryl Palmer battled with PRS Nissan Skyline driver Dion Clerke who got in front by lap 2, until Darryl got back past on lap 4 and was able to hold Dion off. Running to form, Garry Carswell picked up the class win in NA in a closely fort race. Unfortunately Bryan Dykes 13b Cosmo's diff decided to not play the game and cried enough. Bryan had already had his share of drama when his trusty tow wagon gave up the ghost on the trip down from Auckland, hard luck Bryan! Julius Coffey set a PB of 1: some 5 seconds quicker than his last out at Taupo 10 months earlier. A 6 lap reverse grid handicap Race 2 Saw Darryl's white lightening machine take off again like a flaming rocket, crushing the field with a 1: lap, oh so close to a 1:40! Andrew Leech pushed the Frankenstein Rotary Porsche to claim second in the rotaries, no mean feat with only 12a power and the sublime handling and brakes the German marque is known for. Garry Carswell rounded out the top 3 with the FD Rx-7. Race 3 was a 10 lap handicap, which was red flagged after 2 laps due to a hapless Nissan piston engine grenading itself on front straight leading to an oil down and fire. Perhaps he should have raced a rotary powered vehicle - they never put a leg out of bed at least. It was decided that Race 3 would be incorporated into the first 10 laps of the 1 hour endurance race. With Darryl taking out first with an incredible best lap of 1:39.182!, Julius Coffey 2nd and Hayden Woodhead 3rd. The final race was an all in 1 hour race organised by the Martyn Wells and the Production Race Series crew. In typical endurance race fashion there was plenty of drama, Andrew Leech

decided he wanted to test Fire Extinguishers out on his 924, after a rear compartment fire. Luckily through the quick actions of those around him, no significant damage was done and he wisely sat the rest of the race out. Julius Coffey pushed on after the initial 10 laps to bring the trusty green Rx-3 home in 9th overall ending a successful and enjoyable weekend in Taupo for most of the Rotary Racers and everyone looking forward to the next NZRRE event on the 3rd of March at Pukekohe. A great result for Darryl Palmer with the second fastest lap time overall for the day Vs. all competitors and the Collins Automotive (Hamilton) sponsored Series 1 Rx-7 is humming along very well. Hayden Woodhead looked like he had a great first meeting and loved every minute of it. Thanks to all the marshals, admins, Auckland Car Club and Production Race Series crew for all the hard work you put in. The final round results were: Overall NZRRE: 1. Darryl Palmer RX7 2. Julius Coffey RX3 3. Hayden Woodhead RX7 Turbo class: 1. Darryl Palmer RX7 2. Hayden Woodhead RX7 3. Elton Wichman RX7 Naturally Aspirated 1. Julius Coffey RX3 2. Garry Carswell RX7 3. Andrew Leech 924 Novice: 1. Hayden Woodhead Photo credits to Reckless Media

ALL CLASSIC JAPANESE SERIES Round 3 Round three of the series at Taupo had another excellent entry of 24 ACJS cars including two guests for the day in Kristina Dias and Bryce Bindon. Qualifying had major problems with many cars not recording lap times. At first this got heads being scratched as those affected had the same transponder positions as had been used without problem at Hampton Downs and Pukekohe. It was suspected that the problem lay with the transponder receiver loop in the track, but fortunately relocating the transponders in the affected to cars to a better position resolved the issue for the races. The lack of qualifying times caused a bit of chaos on the dummy grid for the first race as there was no grid sheet, so I lined up people based of my experience of their relative lap times. This race resulted in class wins for Bryce Richards (Group 1), John Harvey (Group 2) and Shaun Midgen (Invitation). Unfortunately Tim Hart had a driveline/hub failure and Jason Brown a clutch failure, both of which ended their day. The first handicap race gave class wins to Bryce Richards, James Smith and Mark Collier (Invitation) with Jared Holmes encountering an ignition problem which limited his revs to around He was unable to fix the problem at the track resulting in him trailing round at the rear of the field for the rest of the day. The final handicap race saw class wins again to Bryce Richards and Mark Collier, and John Harvey taking Group 2. Half way through the season sees Clint Harvey leading Group 1, Cobus van der Walt Group 2 and Shaun Midgen Invitation. Photo credits to StreetStyle photography

ROLL OF HONOUR & MEMBERS REUNION 2018 Part 2 INTRODUCING THE FINAL TEN AUCKLAND CAR CLUB ROLL OF HONOUR INDUCTEES OF 2018 Jim Waygood is one of the legendary but unsung heroes of both motorsport and this Club. His job as head of the Auckland Weather Office was testament to his administration and organising abilities which he put to good use in the early days of Grands Prix at Ardmore and Pukekohe. His involvement goes back to the Muriwai beach races and progressed until Chairman of Motorsport Management Limited and as the Club s representative on the Grand Prix Association Board of control for many years. During the 1950s, Jim also spent several years as Vice- President of the Club and was renowned for his knowledge of financial affairs of the organisations he worked with. Rodger Anderson is a name synonymous with New Zealand saloon car racing history as an surprise overall winner of the 1967/68 New Zealand Saloon Car Championship at the wheel of a 999cc Mini Cooper S together with a class win the following season driving the same car but with a 1298cc power unit. Roger then progressed to the new format cc Touring Car Championship importing a rapid BMW 2002 Ti with which he had considerable success after which he contested several production car series driving Chrysler Valiant Pacers and E49 Chargers. George Smith is synonymous with the words racing driver and car constructor having utilised his Kiwi ingenuity to the fullest. Throughout the 1930s, 40s and 50s, he constructed some of New Zealand motorsport s legendary racing cars including the names, Roosevelt Special, Edelbrock Special and Gee Cee Ess. His successes included the 1951 New Zealand Grand Prix at Ohakea and six National beach Racing Championships. George is a former President of the Club and was also the regular race starter at Pukekohe for several years after he retired from driving. Colin Waite is a notable figure on the motor sport scene both as a competitor and administrator for six decades. Having been a successful competitor in trials and early special stage rallies, as a codriver with Laurie Evans, he was instrumental in the establishment of the Woodhill Forest rallies and a long time Clerk of Course at Grand Prix and long distance production car meetings at Pukekohe. More recently, Colin was deeply involved in the restoration of and driving a Cooper 500 and Stangelini in historic racing.

Arthur Dexter was one of the early motor racing and trialling stars who were instrumental in the establishment of this Club. He featured regularly in beach sprints and races, hillclimbs, speedway and reliability trials winning several titles including the 1932 Prosperity Grand Prix in Auckland. Venues he competed at and was involved in the establishment of included Hennings Speedway, Geddes Basin, Seagrove Aerodrome, Western Springs and Gloucester Park. Arthur was also a two-term President of the Club. Phil Schubert epitomises everything club motor racing represents. Having been involved firstly with racing at Bay Park Raceway he joined this Club in the 1980s and became a regular competitor in the renowned Falcon XA nick named Big Red. Over the following years he won the Rod Coppins Memorial Cup, the Bay Park Sports Sedan Series and the Auckland Car Club Modified Saloon Series Trophy over 16 times. Jamie Aislabie is another motor racing legend who was renowned for his ability to design and built his own racing cars. Originally from Auckland then residing in Rotorua, he contested racing events around the North Island during the 1960s until designing his own SID sports cars in which he contested and won nine New Zealand Sports car Championships. Jim Murdoch established himself as a top racing mechanic and engineer including lengthy periods in Formula 1 with Team Lotus and McLaren Racing. On his return to home, he took to driving and twice contested the New Zealand Formula Ford Championship with considerable success driving an imported Titan. He then returned to the United Kingdom and campaigned the British Formula Atlantic Series after which he returned to New Zealand and recommenced his Formula Ford career in a locally designed Begg JM1 which he built himself. This led to Jim moving up to Formula A at the wheel of the now legendary Begg 018 in which he achieved considerable success including a runner up position in the New Zealand Grand Prix.

Mark Sheehan (more informally known as Jandals ) has been one of the country s top engineers and a constructor of both racing and rally cars for over four decades. During this period he worked for some of our top drivers and teams including international drivers who all held him in high regard. He has also involved himself in administration duties on the Executive Committee of the Club and as our Chief Scrutineer for many years. Mark has also granted the sport use of his many engineering skills as long term Motorsport new Zealand Technical Officer. John Windelburn has been involved in both the motor industry and motorsport for several decades. He began racing an Austin A35 at Ardmore in the early 1950s and progressed to the ex-jim Palmer Lotus 11 in which he enjoyed some success. After moving to Auckland and setting up North Shore Transmissions he began campaigning a B4 Roadster and with his mate George Bunce also contested long distance production races including many races in the well known Z28 Camaro and eventually a potent V8 sports sedan during the 1980s. John also held volunteers in high regard and donated the John Windleburn Trophy for outstanding volunteer contribution to the Club.

Morrie Chandler (ONZM) dedicated his life to motorsport in New Zealand while also managing a large successful electrical contracting business. Having contested rallies and trials throughout the 1950s, 60s and 70s, it was special stage rallying in which he was to prove himself to be a successful competitor and legendary administrator.
