And what a month in particular, book-ended for me by a trip to the USA for Monterey Car Week and the (sodden) Goodwood Revival. Talking about Monterey makes me sound like a show-off, but nowhere else provides such immersion in car culture. Yes, it s packed with events that star the greatest cars in the world where else except Pebble Beach would you find Gene Winfield s Reactor, plus a special Ferrari class and rarities such as Peter Neumark s Pinin Farina Jaguar XK120 and the Abarth 1000 Record Prototype? But it s the people too. Amazing enough to bump into Octane regulars Derek Belland Jay Leno, but then there were Sir Jackie Stewart (above, showing me furthest right and other journalists around at The Quail), Tom Kristensen, Dario Franchitti. You didn t need special press access, just an entry ticket. If you ever get the chance, go. I hope Octane can inspire you further with our special reporton the Pebble Beach winner and everything else that week, from page 108. I d met Jochen Mass on a trip to Nice with Mercedes-Benz earlier this year, then again at Goodwood Festival, and at Revival too. In Monterey, he was driving an infamous Mercedes on the Pebble Beach Tour d Elegance. You can read more about the Red Pig on pages A week before Revival, the weather was so much better at the Hampton Court Concours of Elegance (names to drop: Marino Franchitti,Brenda Vernor, HRH Prince Michael). It starred a group of Jaguar D-types that made history by finishing first, second and third at Le Mans in Octane s (jammy) deputy editor Mark Dixon co-drove one there for our cover feature, starting on page 62. Octane has evolved greatly in its 14- year history, and it s moving on again, to a more contemporary size and with a new paper finish. Of course, it still packs in as much as it ever did. And after a summer as hectic as this, that really is a good thing. Glen Waddington, acting editor EVAN KLEIN Meeting the late George Barris was like hanging out with Elvis. He was king of his era of low-tech sci-fi movies and TV shows in which cars were the heroes. George and his contemporaries influenced our love for cars.
