His first, a solo shot in the 12th inning on May 1 against the Isotopes, marked the eighth extra-inning walk-off home run in Aces history. His second, a grand slam on June 1 against the 51s, was the third walk-off grand slam hit in franchise history (Cody Ransom ; Ed Easley ). Gabby Guerrero later helped the Aces split a doubleheader against El Paso with a walk-off two-run homer in the seventh inning of the nightcap, which gave the Aces an improbable... Walk-Off Cycle: In Reno s four-run seventh inning for a 6-4 comeback victory over the Chihuahuas, the Aces hit for the cycle in succession. Mitch Haniger opened the frame with a single and scored on a double by Kyle Jensen to make it 4-3. Clearing the Bases: Reno hit six grand slams in 2016, including two apiece from Todd Glaesmann and Peter O Brien. Aces third baseman Carlos Rivero stabbed a line drive off the bat of Kevin Plawecki and threw around the horn to Ildemaro Vargas and Kyle Jensen to retire Brandon Nimmo and Dilson Herrera, who were both running on the pitch. Reno was the only team to turn a triple play in the PCL in Not One, but Two Inside-the-Park Home Runs: Facing division-leader Tacoma on August 24 at Greater Nevada Field, the Aces accomplished an ultra-rare feat in their eventual 13-7 victory over the Rainiers, when both Kyle Jensen and Sócrates Brito raced around the bases for inside-the-park home runs. Less than a week later, he belted a solo homer in the top of the 12th inning at Cheney Stadium, leading to a 2-1 win. Seven Up: The Aces won seven consecutive games from July 16-22, falling one win shy of matching the franchise record of eight straight wins, previously done twice (July 9-19, 2011; May 4-11, 2012). Multi-Homer Mania: The Aces had 14 individual multi-homer games in 2016 to set a record for the most in a single season in franchise history. Run at Own Risk: Aces catchers combined to throw out 42.3% (55-of-130) would-be base stealers this season, the highest percentage in the PCL. Since joining the league in 2009, the Aces have finished sixth or higher in caught stealing percentage in six of eight seasons. Their highest rate came in 2014 when they posted a 46.9% caught stealing percentage, a number which also led the PCL. All-PCL Squad: For an eighth straight season, the Aces had at least one player selected to the All-PCL Team. Bradley s Beginning: Archie Bradley took the reins on Opening Night and never looked back in seven starts, posting a 5-1 record and 1.99 ERA over 40 2/3 innings, fanning 47 batters along the way. He racked up six quality starts, each of where he allowed two earned runs or less. He bookended his season in an Aces uniform with scoreless outings -- six shutout on April 7 vs. El Paso and eight scoreless on May 21 vs. Omaha. On May 3 at Fresno, he struck out a career-high-tying 11 batters in a 3-2 win over the Grizzlies. Shipley s Homecoming: Braden Shipley returned to Reno with a flourish after three successful seasons from with the Nevada Wolf Pack. Rated as Arizona s No. 1 prospect by MLB.com and Baseball America entering the season, Shipley lived up to the hype with an 8-5 record and 3.70 ERA in 19 starts for the Aces. He set the Aces single-season ERA record, easily breaking Matt Torra s previous low mark of 4.55, set in Shipley led the team with seven starts of 7-plus innings and three earned runs or less. Banda s Brilliance: Anthony Banda joined the Aces from Double-A Mobile on June 23 and went 4-4 with a 3.67 ERA in 13 starts. He was named Arizona s Organizational Pitcher of the Year, with his best outing being a masterpiece on August 13 at Nashville when he struck out 10 batters over six shutout innings. He fanned 36 batters in the month of August, fourth-most in a single month in franchise history. Combined with his 13 starts for the BayBears where he finished 6-2 with a 2.12 ERA, the young southpaw went 10-6 with a 2.88 ERA in 26 starts overall, including 152 strikeouts over 150 innings. Koch s Recipe: Matt Koch s first taste of Triple-A was a sweet one. After a promotion from Mobile on August 1, the 25-year-old went 4-2 with a 3.09 ERA in seven starts. He threw six-plus innings in six outings and was at his best away from home, going 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA in four road starts. He won four consecutive starts from August and finished the month of August with 41 1/3 innings pitched, second-most for a single month in franchise history behind Matt Torra s 41 2/3 innings set in May The Incomparable Ildemaro: Ildemaro Vargas made an immediate impact for the Aces, going 6-for-13 through his first three games after a promotion from Single-A Advanced Visalia on July 17. He went on to record 23 multi-hit games in 49 starts, batting.354 (70-for- 198) with two homers, 13 doubles, 18 RBI, 35 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. His 70 knocks from July 17-end of MiLB regular season (September 5) led all of professional baseball. Bravo, Mr. Haniger: Mitch Haniger hit.341 (89-for-261) with 20 homers, three triples, 20 doubles, 64 RBI, 58 runs and eight stolen bases in 74 games for the Aces. He was named as Arizona s Organizational Player of the Year. #BeLikeMike: Mike Freeman recorded individual games with 5 hits, 4 RBI, 4 runs and 4 walks for the Aces this season, becoming the first Aces player to record those feats during the regular season. In 2014, Mike Jacobs notched individual games with 4 hits, 4 runs, and 4-plus RBI four times (4, 5, 5, 7) during the regular season, before adding a 4-walk performance in the postseason. Freeman ranks among Aces all-time leaders in triples (2nd - 18), games (3rd - 272), hits (3rd - 301), at-bats (3rd - 957), runs (4th - 172), total bases (5th - 403) and doubles (6th - 51). Man of the Month: Three of the five PCL Player of the Month awards were won by Aces players. Peter O Brien took home the April honor after batting.370 (30-for-81) with seven home runs and 21 RBI in 20 games. Two months later, Kyle Jensen claimed the June award after hitting.292 (33-for-113) with 10 homers and 39 RBI. Mitch Haniger followed Jensen s June with a juicy July, batting.402 (45-for-112) with 11 dingers and 35 runs batted in. All the Stars: Four Aces were named to the PCL All-Star Team, including catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, outfielder Kyle Jensen, shortstop Jack Reinheimer and right-handed pitcher Braden Shipley. Gosewisch was recalled by Arizona prior to the Triple-A Midsummer Classic, while Jensen was the lone Aces representative to start. The four All-Star bids matched the 2011 and 2012 Aces teams for most All-Star selections. Tied After Eight, Great: When tied after eight innings, the Aces posted a remarkable 9-1 record, the best in the PCL when given that situation. Free Baseball: Not only did the Aces go 9-1 when tied after eight frames, but they won six of their seven extra-inning games. Their.857 winning percentage in extras was the highest in the PCL, one year removed from going a league-worst 1-8 in extra-inning contests. Reno also led the PCL in 2014 with a.750 clip (6-2) in extras. #PitchersWhoDriveInRuns: A total of 10 pitchers (Anthony Banda, Matt Capps, Josh Collmenter, Kyle Drabek, Edwin Escobar, Edgar Garcia, Zack Godley, Shelby Miller, John Omahen and Braden Shipley) recorded one RBI apiece this season, marking the most pitchers to tally an RBI in a single season in franchise history.
