ACC Co-Player of the Week Junior Eric Gilgenbach was named the ACC s Co-Player of the Week on Feb. 19 after hitting three home runs and driving in nine runs in Notre Dame s series win at No. 9 LSU. Gilgenbach hit a go-ahead three-run homer in the fourth inning on Feb. 18 and later added a grand slam in the ninth, becoming the first Irish player to drive in seven RBI in a single game since Jake Shepski had nine RBI against Virginia Tech in Gilgenbach s three home runs equal his 2017 season total as he appeared in 36 games and batted.333 with eight RBI. Gilgenbach s eight putouts led the team on Opening Day. Field(ing) of Dreams Notre Dame has not committed an error in its first three games of the season. Prior to this season, the Irish have not opened the season with three straight errorless games since at least The Irish did not commit an error in games against St. Edwards, Trinity and Minnesota before committing their first error in game four against St. Mary s (in San Antonio). The Irish and the Billikens have split their last six games (3-3), dating back to Notre Dame faced the Billikens twice in 2017, including once in the Alamo Irish Classic tournament championship, which Saint Louis won 8-3. Series History: Incarnate Word Notre Dame leads the all-time series, 6-2. The Irish have faced Incarnate Word eight times, with all of those contests being played in San Antonio. Just one of those games (a loss) was played at Incarnate Word, while the others were at Nelson Wolff Stadium. Opening Weekend Recap (at No. 9 LSU) The Irish fell 7-6 in a heartbreaking loss on Opening Day, when they lost control of a 6-0 lead after allowing a grand slam and a threerun homer. The Irish and Tigers squared off in front of an LSU baseball record crowd of 12,844 at Alex Box Stadium on Friday. Notre Dame topped the Tigers 10-5 in dominant fashion on Saturday, when freshman Tommy Sheehan made his college debut and threw 5.0 innings. Cole Kmet earned the save in his college debut, tossing 4.0 scoreless innings in relief. Eric Gilgenbach hit his first home run of the season, and five Irish players recorded two hits in the game. The Irish won their second game of the season in Sunday s rubber match, defeating the Tigers Notre Dame was led by Gilgenbach s two homers and seven RBI, including a grand slam in the ninth inning. Starter and righthander Cameron Junker threw 3.1 innings and allowed just one run. 3 Filling in the Rotation Notre Dame entered the 2018 season looking to fill the void of its three weekend starters as well as its closer from last season. Former Irish starters Brad Bass, Michael Hearne and Brandon Bielak and closer Sean Guenther combined to go with a 4.21 ERA (139 ER/297.1 IP). The foursome recorded 267 strikeouts, 8.08 strikeouts/9.0 IP, and 2.47 strikeout/walk ratio (108 walks). Last weekend at LSU, Notre Dame starters LHP Scott Tully, LHP Tommy Sheehan and RHP Cameron Junker combined to go 1-0 with a 6.07 ERA (9 ER/13.1 IP). Milestone Watch Jake Johnson tallied his 100th career hit in game three at LSU. Nick Podkul collected his 100th career hit in game two at LSU.
