(DH) - Doubleheader All Times Eastern Standard Time Head Coach Jim Toman Record at Liberty: (Second Year) Career Record: Same After a solid campaign in his fi rst year as Liberty s head coach, Jim Toman is in his second season at the helm of the program. Last season, the Flames fashioned a record in the month of May to fi nish the season with a mark, making Toman the winningest fi rst-year coach in the program s 36-year history. Toman guided the Flames to their third straight Big South Championship title game appearance, claiming the conference s runner-up position in Liberty s May record was the best ever by a Flames team, as Liberty won 30 or more games in a season for the fourth consecutive year for the fi rst time in program history. In addition, the Liberty pitching staff set a new season strikeout record, fanning 508 opposing batters during the year. The Flames strikeout total led the Big South Conference and their 8.2 strikeouts per nine innings ranked 22nd nationally at season s end. Two pitchers from the staff, Ryan Page and David Stokes, went on to be drafted and play in the professional ranks this past summer. Page was taken in the 20th round of the MLB draft by the Toronto Blue Jays, while Stokes was picked in the 28th round by the Detroit Tigers. Liberty batters eclipsed the school s single-season doubles mark, ripping 155 twobase hits. The total ranked the Flames fi fth in the country in the category. Liberty hitters also set a program record for hit by pitch. The Flames fi nished their season with a 14-7 record in conference play. The mark allowed Liberty to claim the No. 2 seed for the Big South Championship, their highest seed for the Big South Baseball Championship since a No. 1 seed in The Flames went on to post four consecutive double-digit victories during six games in the Big South Championship to set a championship record with 55 runs scored. Toman is the sixth head coach in the 34-year history of the Liberty Baseball program. The second-year skipper comes to Liberty after 11 seasons as the senior member of Ray Tanner s coaching staff at South Carolina. Toman worked a total of 18 years alongside Tanner, dating back to the 1990 season at N.C. State. During his time at South Carolina, Toman served as recruiting coordinator and worked with the team s catchers. Known as one of the top recruiters in college baseball, the 19- year college coaching veteran was named the 2002 Baseball America/American Baseball Coaches Association Assistant Coach of the Year. Before joining the Gamecock staff in 1996, Toman served under Tanner for seven years at N.C. State. Toman has recruited 15 top 25 classes, including all 11 of his seasons at South Carolina. From , three of the four Gamecock recruiting classes were ranked fi rst in the nation by Collegiate Baseball. Toman s 2003, 2005 and 2006 classes were named the top recruiting classes by the publication. During his time on the staff in Columbia, S.C., Toman and the Gamecocks made nine NCAA Regional appearances, including eight-straight since 2000, and three consecutive trips to the College World Series ( ). Add in his seven seasons at N.C. State, and Toman has helped lead 15 teams to NCAA Regional appearances. Toman earned four baseball letters at N.C. State, , and was captain of the Wolfpack his junior and senior seasons. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in vocational industrial education in He received a Master of Science degree in sport management from N.C. State in Upon graduation, Toman entered the coaching profession as an assistant at Richmond County High School in Rockingham, N.C., for two years. He moved into the collegiate coaching ranks in 1989 as an assistant at Florida International for one year. At FIU, he was responsible for the weight program, worked with the squad s catchers and coached fi rst base. Toman joined the N.C. State staff before the 1990 season.

Prior to his educational position, Taylor was an athletic trainer at both Liberty and UNC Asheville. Taylor will be remembered for his infl uence on students to pursue their careers and the friendship he provided many in the Lynchburg community. An avid baseball fan, Taylor followed the Flames on a regular basis and loved to talk baseball with whoever he could. Please remember the Taylor s wife and family in your prayers. A moment of silence will be observed in Taylor s memory before Friday s contest. The Coaches Liberty Head Coach Jim Toman is in his second year at the helm of the Flames. The Chanticleers hold a advantage in the all-time series with the Flames, which start in Last season, Liberty and Coastal Carolina met fi ve times, three during the regular season and twice for the Big South Championship. Their most recent meetings were on May 24, 2008 at Memorial Stadium in Danville, Va., in the 2008 Big South Championship. The Flames defeated the Chanticleers, 13-1, to force a second game for the Big South title. Coastal Carolina took the second match-up, 9-2, to take the title. Liberty Against the Big South Charleston Southern Coastal Carolina Gardner-Webb High Point Radford UNC Asheville Presbyterian VMI Winthrop Total Flames Post Most Victories in Big South Play With their 10-9, 11-inning win at Gardner-Webb, this past Sunday, the 2009 Liberty Flames have recorded 16 Big South victories, the most ever by a Liberty baseball team since joining the conference in The victory total surpasses the 15 Big South wins by the 1995 Flames, who fi nished their conference season at Jim Toman s squad still has six Big South Conference games remaining. On the Verge of 30 Wins With one more victory, Liberty will have reached 30 wins for the fi fth consecutive season, and the fi rst two years under head coach Jim Toman. Last season, the Flames posted a mark to record four-straight seasons of 30 wins are more. It was the fi rst time in the 36-year history of the program, Liberty has accomplished the four-year feat. Before last season, the Liberty baseball program had won 30 games in season, three consecutive years. The Flames won 30 or more contests three consecutive seasons from The Last Time Out After Liberty had tied the contest in top of the inning, the No. 11 Virginia Cavaliers scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth, en route to a 5-2 win over the Flames, Tuesday night at Davenport Field. This year, Flames batters have been hit by a pitch seven times in a game twice to set a new school standard. Temple pitchers hit seven Liberty hitters on March 7 and High Point hurlers plunked seven Flames on March 22. Last season, the Flames set a new school record by being hit by a pitch 82 times. The mark eclipsed the previous standard of 75 in the 2001 season. Fine Fielding Jim Toman s squad ranked seventh in the nation in fi elding percentage with a.978 percentage in the latest NCAA Division I statistical report, for games through April 26. In addition, the Flames currernt percentage of.977 tops the Big South Conference. Liberty has committed 37 errors in 1643 chances this season. The Flames fi elding percentage is 26 points higher than at the same juncture of the year, last season. Through 42 games, Liberty had made 67 errors, 30 more than this year, in 1712 chances for a.951 fi elding percentage in The Flames ended the year with a.963 percentage. The best team fi elding percentage over a season in school history was set by the 2005 Flames. That season, Liberty posted a.971 fi elding percentage and also committed the fewest errors in school history with 62. Two Flames Tough to K Entering the weekend, Liberty outfi elders Curren Redal and Doug Bream have shown themselves to be two of the toughest hitters in the nation to strike out. Through games played on April 26, Redal has struck out once every 20.6 at bats, ranking him 12th among NCAA Division I batters in the country. Meanwhile, fellow Flame Doug Bream ranks 13th on the same list, striking out once every 20.4 at bats. Flames Win 16th Big South Contest Liberty catcher Errol Hollinger hit a game-tying grand slam and fi rst baseman Trey Wimmer blasted the game-winning home run, as the Flames rallied from a 9-3 deficit for a 10-9, 11-inning win over the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in Big South Conference baseball action, last Sunday at Masters Field. With the win, the Flames moved to 16-4 in conference play. Liberty s 16 league victories are the most ever by a Liberty baseball team since joining the Big South in The victory total surpasses the 15 Big South wins by the 1995 Flames. With the win, Liberty takes the three-game series, two games to one. After Liberty erased a 9-3 Gardner-Webb lead to knot the contest at 9-9, Wimmer led off the 11th inning by blasting the fi rst pitch of the inning over the left fi eld wall. The home run, the first baseman s sixth of the season, gave Liberty a 10-9 advantage. Reliever Andrew Wilson then closed out the Bulldogs in bottom of the inning, stranding the tying run on second base to run his record to 5-2. The right-hander threw four innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits, while striking out fi ve and walking one. The Flames knotted the contest in the eighth inning. The fi rst three hitters in the inning, second baseman P.J. Jimenez, shortstop Matt Williams and center fi elder Curran Redal, each singled to begin the frame, loading the bases with no one out. Two batters later, Hollinger drilled a 1-0 pitch over the left fi eld wall, tying the contest at 9-9. The grand slam was the catcher s eighth round tripper of the year. The Flames Redal had four hits to lead all players in the contest. Doug Bream added three hits. Hollinger had fi ve RBIs for Liberty. Tyler Bream s Walk-off HR Pushes Flames Past Hokies With two men aboard and trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the ninth inning, third baseman Tyler Bream connected for a two-out, three run walk-off home run, propelling the Flames past the Virginia Tech Hokies, 4-3, April 22 at Worthington Stadium. After 13 consecutive batters had been retired, the Flames got the fi rst two hitters of the ninth inning on base. Shortstop Matt Williams drew a walk to open the inning and center fielder Curran Redal dropped a single into center fi eld. After the next two Liberty batters were retired, Bream worked a 3-2 count against reliever Ben Rowen, before belting his eighth home run of the year over the right fi eld wall for the 4-3 victory. Designated hitter Cody Brown also hit a home run for the Flames. Liberty s four hurlers on the afternoon gave up three runs on four hits, striking out fi ve and walking one. Jimenez drove in four runs with a home run and a single, helping the Liberty Flames defeat the Winthrop Eagles, 10-5, in game two of their Big South doubleheader at Worthington Stadium, April 18, sweeping both the doubleheader and the three-game series. With the sweep, the Flames moved into fi rst place in the conference standings. Liberty second baseman Jimenez connected for his second home run of the year, with two men aboard, during a four-run second inning. He later plated another run with an infield single with the bases loaded in the seventh frame. During one stretch in the game, Flames pitchers Mark Swanson and Cody Brown retired combined to retire 14 batters in a row from the second inning through the seventh inning. Liberty Takes Series From VMI The Liberty Flames broke a 1-1 tie in the seventh inning with two runs, and then held on for a 4-3 victory over the VMI Keydets, 4-3, April 5 in Big South Conference action at Gray/Minor Stadium. With the win, the Flames took the three-game series, two games to one. In the bottom of the sixth inning, VMI loaded the bases with no one out. However, after being summoned from the bullpen, Liberty reliever Andrew Wilson induced three consecutive ground balls, which resulted in force outs at home plate, preventing the Keydets from scoring. After getting out of the bases loaded jam in the previous inning, the Flames broke the deadlock on the scoreboard with two runs. Wilson picked up the win to run his record to 4-1 on the year. The nine-game streak ties the 2009 Flames with the 2008, 2006, 1995 and 1985 clubs for the most consecutive wins in a season during the program s Division I era. The 1976 Liberty team holds the school record for the longest win streak in the history of the program with a 12-game streak. Mashing in March After going 3-3 to begin the season, the Flames went 16-3 in the month of March, keyed by their hitting. Over its 19 games during the month, Liberty hit.356 as a team, and scored 10.2 runs per game. The hitting outburst raised the Flames batting average for the season 88 points, to.326. During the stretch, Liberty enjoyed a power burst too. The Flames hit 31 home runs and boasted a.563 slugging percentage over the March s 19 games. Flames Sweep Blue Hose In First-Ever Series Liberty hit five home runs, propelling the Flames to a 14-7 victory over Presbyterian, and a sweep of its three-game series with the Blue Hose, March 29 at Worthington Stadium. The series was the fi rst-ever between the Flames and Big South newcomer Blue Hose. Third baseman Tyler Bream hit his fi rst collegiate grand slam in the third inning, while outfielders Curran Redal and Doug Bream connected for back-to-back home runs in the fifth. Catcher Errol Hollinger and Trey Wimmer also hit four-baggers for the Flames. Redal s round tripper was his fourth of the season, while Doug Bream s was his fi fth of the year. It is the second time this season, the Flames have hit back-to-back home runs in a contest. The Flames collected 23 hits in the contest, the most by Jim Toman s team this season. The hit total eclipses the 18 hits Toman s squad had on three other occasions earlier this year. Hollinger, a native of Upland, Calif., is a four-year starter at the position for the Flames. He entered the season named on the 2009 Brooks Wallace Player of the Year Watch list. The senior enters Friday s contest tied for the team lead in home runs with eight. Hollinger is hitting.319 with 30 RBIs and 28 runs scored in 43 starts. He has also added 11 doubles. Last season, the Liberty catcher fi nished among the Big South leaders in runs scored (6th 60), hits (7th 82), RBIs (tied 8th 47), doubles (tied 5th 19) and total bases (tied 7th 127). On the defensive side, he led the conference in runners caught stealing with 26 and fewest passed balls with four. Redal Tabbed Big South Player of the Week Liberty junior outfi elder Curran Redal was selected as the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Baseball Player of the Week for games played March Redal helped Liberty post a 3-1 record during the week, with a.500 batting average (5-10),.684 on-base percentage and a.900 slugging percentage. The junior scored fi ve runs, knocked in seven runs, doubled, homered, walked six times and was 3-3 in stolen bases. Redal enters the week on a 10-game hit streak, hitting.500 over the stretch. The center fielder slugged a home run and walked twice in Liberty s 6-3 victory over Duke, March 10, and had two hits and two RBIs in the Flames win over William & Mary, March 11. Tyler Bream s Record Helps Complete Sweep Third baseman Tyler Bream tied the Liberty record for RBIs in a game with nine, as the Flames defeated the High Point Panthers, 19-5, March 22 at Coy Willard Stadium to complete a sweep of its three-game Big South series. With a run-scoring single in seventh inning, Bream tied the Liberty record for RBIs in a game with nine. The freshman third baseman s nine RBIs tied the school mark set by former Flame standout Pat Sipe, who recorded nine RBIs in a 13-2 win over Richmond on April 19, 1986, at Worthington Stadium. Bream went 3-for-4 with four runs scored to go along with his nine RBIs for the Flames. Catcher Errol Hollinger went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Left-hander Steven Evans went the distance, recording his fi rst complete game of the season, as the Liberty Flames defeated the High Point Panthers, 7-3, Saturday night in the middle game of the series. After the first inning, Evans cruised throughout the remainder of the contest, keeping the Panther batters in check to run his record to 3-0. The sophomore allowed three runs on nine hits. He struck out three and walked one. He became the fi rst Flames pitcher to pitch a complete game this season. Bream paced Liberty at the plate with three hits and three RBIs. Second baseman Kizuku Scott also had three hits for the Flames, scoring three times in the victory. Friday night in the opening game of a three-game Big South series, Justin Richardson doubled home the go ahead run in the top of the ninth and reliever Andrew Wilson made it stand in the bottom of the frame, as the Liberty Flames defeated the High Point Panthers, 9-8. With the game tied 8-8 in the top of the ninth, Liberty took the lead for good on a twobase hit by Richardson. With two out and fi rst baseman Trey Wimmer on second base, Richardson rocketed a double to the left center fi eld gap to give the Flames a 9-8 lead. Earlier in the contest, Richardson had tied the game with a pinch-hit, RBI double in the seventh inning.
