1 TENNESSEE RINGER ROUNDUP Tennessee Horseshoe Pitchers Association Newsletter TNHPA WEBSITE JUL/AUG 2015 President Morgan s Message: First of all a BIG Congrats to Lawrence Osborne WT Elder B1 Champion. I hope the rest of the World Tournament pitchers had a good time even though some didn t do as well you all made some new friends. Congratulations to all! (Final results for all pitchers to follow.) Now back to the second in a series of complaints I have been commenting on, Distractions some of these complaints are about rules, some are opinions. (Personally I could write a book about only my opinions) 1. No talking while pitching- if you do talk keep it quiet so as not to disturb a competitor on your court or adjoining courts. Note: outside the pitching area you can talk but still not loud enough to disturb the pitchers. 2. Moving around outside the court fencing- If someone comes up and leans on the court fencing directly behind a court you are pitching on- sorry- nowhere in the rules does it say they have to move if they don t want to. That is one of the reasons there is a fence. You or I can politely ask them to move but they don t have to. (You are supposed to be looking at the stab or your pit not what is going on at the fence. my opinion) 3. time allowed to pitch your shoes- once a pitcher is set they have 30 seconds to deliver both shoes Remember just a little common sense and sportsmanship would go a long way in todays world!- pitching horseshoes included. REMINDER: 2015 TN STATE SINGLES TOURNAMENT is scheduled for September 26 at Crossville. Be sure to get your entries in with payment by September 12 th. 5 Rogersville man wins at World Horseshoe Tournament By Bill Jones ROGERSVILLE A Rogersville man finished first in Elder B-1 Class at the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA) World Horseshoe Tournament in Topeka, Kansas, last week. And Lawrence Osborne, 70, of Jackson Road, Rogersville, finished only a single point shy of making the finals in the Elder Division, according to his daughter, Connie Hodges, of Bulls Gap. She noted that Lawrence won the Elder B-1 Class at the Kansas Expocentre with the best average score (in that class) over 15 horseshoe games pitched during during three days (July 20-22). Horseshoe pitchers taking part in the World Tournament must qualify by entering local tournaments and establishing a ringer percentage, which defines the class in which they compete, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal More than 1,400 horseshoe pitchers from the U.S. and Canada were taking part in the event between July 13 and 25, Hodges said. Competition was held in the Open Men, Open Women, Seniors (60-over), Elders (70-over), Juniors (18- under) and Cadets (12-under) divisions. Prize money was paid in all divisions with a total purse of $11,775 in the Open Men and Open Women divisions, with 16 places paid, and a $4,200 first prize, according to the Topeka Capital-Journal. A welcome letter distributed to participants stated that most class play would entail horseshoe games. Cash prizes were paid to the top 4, 5 or 6 positions depending on class size, with Lawrence taking home $500 in tournament prize money, his daughter said. Connie noted that Lawrence won his class despite having driven with his family about 850 miles from Rogersville to Topeka, Kansas, July My husband, Craig, and I shared the driving so Daddy could get some rest on the way, Connie said. Also taking part in the trip to the World Horseshoe Tournament were Lawrence's wife, Peggy Osborne, and the Hodges daughter, Molly, 14. We had to wait for Molly to finish playing in a softball tournament before we could leave for Topeka, Connie recalled during a July 24 telephone interview. After Lawrence took part in the World Tournament, the family made the return drive to Rogersville, arriving home the morning of Friday, July 24, according to Connie. She noted that Lawrence Osborne's 2015 World Horseshoe Tournament feat came on the heels of his having finished second in his class during the 2014 World Horseshoe Tournament in Buffalo, N.Y. Family members also accompanied Lawrence to the 2014 World Horseshoe Tournament, according to Connie. Connie said her father has been pitching horseshoes competitively for about 10 years with his friends and regularly takes part in horseshoe tournaments that are held in Rutledge, Surgoinsville, White Pine and other Northeast Tennessee locales. He pitches about every Saturday, year around, Connie said of her father.
